Honestly the old CLS is to my eyes a handsome car and there aren't many cars like it that are meant for exactly a singular purpose - a shuttle for you and your 3 friends for bombing a highway to nowhere in particular, to do nothing in particular.

This is a long comment, but it's for people who are looking into getting one because I own one so i'll share my thoughts. It seems like opinions on the design is a hit or miss, but remember all of the big names in car journalism thought it looked great. You may find one or two magazine articals but majorty of the ones I saw liked it. The car is an elgant 4 door sedan, despite Mercedes calling it a coupe, and it is a jack of all trades. One of these cars with the AMG kit is a stunning thing to look at going down the road. I sold 5 cars in my collection and bought this one instead to down size so I can have a car that does everything instead. I can drive it to work everyday and it would be reliable. I can go on a date night with it and my partner wouldn't scoff at it as being another one of my toys. I can take it on road trips and the seats would massage me and keep me heated and cooled. The car is so smooth specially on fresh engine mounts. I can take it to car meets with my friends and it would garner great respect amongst people who know what it is. You could park it anywhere and no one is gonna hurt it. I think the biggest point of debate here is the handling. Back in the top gear days when they road tested it, it was only a little bit slower then the E60 M5 around the track. 0.7 seconds to be exact. Now Mercedes cars not being handling cars is a common trope but that doesn't actually translate to them being slow on the track. There's two factors to this, the first is that they have more body roll with light steering compared to an M, and the second is that you're insullated from all sensations of the road to where people don't know they're actually going into a corner a little too fast compared to what they'd normally do in other cars. You will go 100 in this car and not feel it. It takes getting use to, but once you do the car will handle very nicely. My friend took his s55 to autocross and he placed high on the board. He beat out all the mid range sports cars, and lost to newer crovettes and porsches in a fully loaded executive saloon on his second time going to an autocross (first time with an S55). Yes a miata is maybe more fun at lower speeds but ur going about 20miles an hour and getting gapped by everything. Really it's a trade off. You can buy an M5 but good luck with the reliability or you can buy a CLS instead. Now as for MPG, it's a 500hp car. You're gonna get like 15-18 average if you're lucky. If you want more MPG for the horse power you're gonna spend more then 10k over the price of this one so how much gas are u really gonna use? Boot space is great so ur only missing out on the bench seat in the back vs an e55 but that's not really an issue for me but maybe for you. Either way. Get a Pre purchase inspection and you won't regret it.

The coupe-sedan is a very sought after design for the germans but I think none have really ever captured it like the CLS, the shape is almost like a perfection of the japanese hatch-sedan mould like the Mazda 626, Toyota Avensis and some 90s Corollas. Certainly cars like the CLA do not hit the mark nearly like it.

It’s a sort of paradox that comes with all lovely big V8 supercharged barges of trying to run one and paying for your own fuel, tax etc.

  • @defconluke

I bought a 2007 CLS63 just over 3 years ago and you've pretty much nailed the car in this review. I was originally looking for a W211 E63 but found a well looked after CLS and a deal was done.
Mine has also been quite reliable, only needing a new battery because I didn't want to trust the OEM, 15 year old one during a very cold winter and an airmatic pump (£300, 3 bolts and about 10 minutes to replace).
Suspension is on the stiffer side (Sport 2 is all but unusable in the UK) and definitely suited to faster and more open roads than the sort of back roads that you would search out in a hot hatch but as a daily driver they are supremely comfortable and putting your foot down will always put a smile on your face before you realise that you should probably ease off a bit.
The rear seats can be tight for people 6ft+ and I wish they folded because it would be a lot more practical but it also means anything kept in the boot area is very secure.
Definitely held its value over the past few years but I can't imagine there being a queue of people lining up to buy if/when the time to sell comes but for now; it's not going anywhere.

I am the 3rd owner of a low mile, 2005 E55 with a 77mm VRP pulley, RaceIQ tune, MK Ultra Stage 1 TCU and other assorted supporting upgrades and I do all of my own work. I replaced the Airmatic suspension with BC Racing adjustable coil overs to address the Achilles heel of this era Merc and it’s the very well sorted for a car that is almost 2 decades old. I have a set of long tube headers, looped fuel rail and some cooling mods just sitting on a shelf waiting for the mood to strike me to tear into it. I hit an HOV lane marker this week and cracked the bumper pretty badly and lost the lower mesh grill so I may do an E63 conversion while I have the bumper off to do the intercooler. I remember being a teenager in the mid to late 00's and seeing this going by and being in awe. My parents who are both doctors and do a lot of miles always drove mercedes, but they always went for standard mercedes models instead of anything flashy or remotely good looking. Once my dad was having his car serviced and they gave him one of these (obviously not an AMG model) for a couple of days, and I kept begging him to get one.

Greetings from Ireland jayemm. I have a 06 cls55amg from Dario Franchittis family. Have had it 4 yrs now and have to say your review is absolutely true in good and bad points. The only issue I have is that the HP rating for USA at 469 and 476 Europe is I believe incorrect. Mercedes brought AMG inhouse at the time of the 113k. They didn't want to loose sales of the S55amg so deliberately put lower HP number to press for E55/CLS55. They all came from Afalterbach with 493hp.
    Excellent review sir!

the first time i saw a cls i was probably 6 or 7 years old and it blew my mind, it looked evil and futuristic and ive never forgotten it. Re the interior. This was them making a return to form of old after criticism of the shoddy late 90s early 00s dross they had been churning out. In fact the whole car was a bit of an excercise in engineering. Their range back then was far more streamlined 3 box saloons, estates, a big ol suv or 2 and the original cleverly packaged a class (second gen). Simpler times. I was working in Essex mainly arounf 2008 and on the road for a living these and the Eos were my favourites to see. That one I’d like to see reviewed with the 2.0 gti engine.

I've been daily driving my 08 CLS 320cdi in a nice "AMG daytona blue" with the later 7speed gearbox for the past 5 years now and I couldn't be happier with the car, I've done just over 40k miles in the car now and it's been pretty reliable (apart from the same over zealous parking sensors!) it's a metal sprung model rather than airmatic so I've swapped them out for Bilstein units. the car is remapped too and I can get 45/55 mpg on a motorway and it's quick enough for a daily.

I have one of these, a CLS55 in silver and black interior, remapped and decatted, dynoed at 545 bhp and 647lb/ft torque. It is sublimely comfortable, air suspension is not hard as Jay says, it's very absorbant and compliant, and generally, the car has been quite reliable. But as Jay says, when you hit the peddle, oh yes, you will smile. The midrange grunt is bezerk. Wanna go from 30 to 140 in 3rd?? No problem. With that engine and gearbox, this car is effortless. Extremely long legged. A supremely, comfortable cruiser one minute, a raging bull the next. Just love this car!!!

@@ElliasFrederic Oh it's good man. drive train and gearbox are really solid. Mines been great and it's now been 3 years. If you get an unmodified one then you really get to experience reliability ofcourse. You must look for one that has been maintained well however as they are expensive to own cars. The car itself can sometimes be an issue in the form of window regulators, alternators, batteries (front and back). I've had to replace these. The previous owner replaced the front two air struts which can be expensive so do look out for that. The brake also uses a hydraulic system which has a limited step counter so that is something be mindful of however mine has not had this issue. Bang for buck honestly you are not getting better. The car looks gorgeous, the engine is crack, it has instant torque and 2nd gear blasts you. With a secondary decat and X pipe it sounds like a roaring lion it's amazing. It's a refined place to be and handles well for its size, it does not feel as old as it should be but please do look out for a good one. Even if it's higher mileage, paperwork and maintenance is key. The gearbox oil should have been changed every 35k. I'd say have some money aside for immediate maintenance just to be sure. This is with any old car you buy and do drive one before you buy one if you can. On a rolling with a few mods they'll hang with the latest of fast performance sedans.

Suspension lives in Sport 2, Comfort is very useful for going over speed humps though. Ironically, because I don't do a lot of miles it's been the cheapest car I've ever had to run, in that time nothing has gone wrong, it only needs servicing every two years, insurance is cheaper than the boggo 350 diesel version and it's just old enough to get the 'cheap' road tax, would be double if it was a couple of weeks newer. On top of that it's now worth what I paid for it. Just popping to the shops is still enough of an event to make me smile every time and the consumption is irrelevant if not doing big miles.

The cls55 is a Fantastic looking car. Very reliable. Zero issues in the 4 years I’ve owned one and the 8 years the previous owner (friend) has had one. A window regulator failed, which I replaced myself.
The sound , feel and sheer animal of an engine is music to my ears.
I ended up tuning it mine, installing an x pipe , smaller pulley and upgraded the Bosch cooling pump. It’s that much more of an absolute monster. The transmission takes the power easily , and shifts pretty well in stock form. Upgraded tcu tune makes the shifting that much crisper (just had that done).
The ride is comfortable in comfort , and quite a bit stiffer (still comfortable) in sport mode. This is with 20” wheels, low profile tires and Toronto roads(trash).
