What's the worst car you can buy with an MOT for £500? Is it this MG ZR?

- I set out to buy a 2nd place booby prize for the forthcoming Geoff Buys Cars Halloween Special, and totally failed at buying a really awful car.
This 2003 MG ZR has it's quirks, but it ain't half bad, especially if you win it for £10 on October 30th!

I had a Mk 1 ZR and a Mk 2 ZS and loved both of them the ZR was so good to drive and the ZS with an induction kit fitted to the V6 sounded so good and very distinctive. I wish that the ZS didn't drink petrol at the rate of 5 miles to the Litre so ultimately I had to let it go.
Great video, always interesting messing about with retro cars , love it, I had one of these in le mans green but it was the 1.8VVC , was rapid
They're good fun, it's a good chassis!
Oh you missed a vauxhall corsa b in London m plate moted may low mileage gls 1.4 for 500 last week as well Vauxhall pink as well lol
Just watched that collection video and it drives well apparently…
@@Lot76CARS aye cheap car as well London to middle of Scotland fair trek lol
Nice one Geoff, not a bad example. Plenty of life yet 😬
It isn't all doom and gloom with the starting issues, had the same on my ZS. The spade connector that plugs into the starter solenoid can become corroded and loose. Needs taking off, cleaning and refitting tightly. Can all be accessed from above the car. Probably a tip for the next owner at this point! Worked for me.
Can't be dealing with driveway roulette 🤣
Ah thanks for this, I thought it would be something really simple
Got a mk1 ford focus st170 recently that needed a bit of welding for its mot. 93k, handles great, quicker than I thought and loves having the nuts revved off it. So much better than these old mg rovers, which were poor even when new.
I agree, but this is the state of the market at the moment, you can't buy good cars for cheap anymore!
I bought one of these, ‘04 plate, about 6 or 7 years ago for £350, drove it practically everyday since, over 100k miles, and it’s still going strong. Never broken down once, sailed through every MOT, it has hardly costed a penny in maintenance. The rust is a constant battle I will admit, but other than that, it’s a wonderful little car that’s hugely underrated and unbelievably economical. I absolutely adore it, and genuinely hope it’ll keep running forever. I’ll be heartbroken when it eventually stops, but no signs at all of that happening yet - see if i can get another 100k miles out of her!
hey! Just wondering how is the insurance on one of these because I'am really thinking about buying on.
@@Blob_1 Insurance is comparatively cheap. Obviously depends on a lot of factors other than the car though
@@crintondux Thats Well good to know, thanks alot man!
Nice cars almost bought one last year but they suffers with Headgasket problems so did the zs
I implore anyone to buy a ticket. The chance to get that magical phone call whilst live on Facebook and be offered a piece of faded motoring glory, the likes of which will never be made again surely can't be missed?. I won a Citroen XM. Isn't that everyone's secret dream car??
Great review!
I'm currently on the look out for a cheap, older, work commute runner if our place end WFH altogether (currently allowed 2-3 days a week), as don't wnat to put the miles on my main car. Hoping to find something with MOT around the £500 mark, cheap to run, tax and insure. #KeepAnOldcarOnTheRoad
I'm proud to say I had one and loved it!!!
Almost free motoring if you weigh it in at MOT time... personally I'd be on ebay looking for a couple of wings for 60 quid, that car has £1k written all over it as long as the underneath isn't dead.
You're so right
Geoff, I really want to win this car - please 🤣😝 ZRs and ZSs have been in the family, and soft spot is an understatement.
Ha ha, get yourself involved and that's all there is to it! It ain't a bad little thing.
@@GeoffBuysCars I have, bought two tickets last night for me and the Mrs.
@@larvey Ah then I wish you luck, they're only small draws and always a lot of fun, plus this is a two car draw which makes it all the more interesting!
Worst. Surely an mg is one of the best things you could get for 500. 500 doesn't buy much these days. I've seen absolute lemons for £2000 these days that would have been 500 cars not to long ago.
i know it's shocking what the car market has done, utter shite on wheels, yours for £1595, ha ha
After years of shitbox ownership, I recently sold my 62 plate 535d for 12k and went hunting for a 500quid shitbox as I only drive a car 2 or 3 times a month... did I get a shock. People are wanting 2 grand for rusty 180k golfs now!
I thought I did well scoring a 10 plate astra sri 1.7 cdti with 190k for £900
The chip shortage made a new car shortage that made the used car market go mental. My car has gained a grand in value since I bought it in 2 years ago.
I got a 1998 Corsa with 42k miles on it for £450 3 years ago. Fitted a new EGR valve (£25 on ebay) And a MAF sensor (£15 ebay)
It's now on 96k miles and still going strong.
The key thing there is 3 years ago, that's how the market has changed. Have a look and see what you can find for £450 with an MOT today 🙂
@@GeoffBuysCars that's a fair point, I think the lower end car market pricepoint has double if not tripled in some cases
Shame it's not a holy grail MG Atomix special edition 🤣
Always wanted one wish I was that lucky

£400 for a half decent shed? Or four tanks of diesel for a family saloon car. I’ll probably have to spend more than half that just on road tax this year.
I paid £300 for mine but it was seriously rusty. See “Project Stinky” on my channel. Great car. Great channel.
Ive sold better cars for 300 quid with a few months mot left of them lol
recently? ha ha i'll buy em
@@GeoffBuysCars yea about an hour ago sold my old vauxhall omega estate 2.2 auto with 172k miles on it fully working with mot till december, needs welding where the sills meet the rear arches and new tyres for mot, leaks oil from valve cover, ran and drove like a 100k car i drove it for 4 years.
@@GeoffBuysCars to be fair i wouldnt say better but just as good
@@UncalBertExcretes dam i'd have bought that haha
