2003 MG ZR 1.4 Review - Hot Hatch or Boy Race Banger? - Buy it, Try it, Sell it with Geoff Buys Cars

  • I buy cars for fun, to do video reviews and document the journey. Recently I bought a 2003 MG ZR 1.4, ragged it around for a week and sold it. This is my verdict.
Oh, there's some outtakes at the end too. No speeding was done in the making of this video, no head gaskets were harmed in the making of this video and no cherry bakewell crumbs were dropped in the drivers seat during the making of this video.
Filmed and edited by me, unscripted, usually in one take. Which is why you don't see footage of me driving along, it's quite hard to film on my own!
Should I publish more of the footage on this car?
Do you want to see the full 'public reading' of the MG brochures and leaflets?
Does anyone really read these descriptions?
How many different watches did you spot?
Do you like my new jumper?
Should I buy a new hat?

These are the top car in the Curborough sprint championship in the standard up to 1400cc class. Three main reasons for this: 1. They handle extremely well (the ride is pretty awful though). 2. The 17” wheels which most come on are 205mm wide and you can get decent tyres in the size. 3. Very few n/a 1.4 litre cars are as powerful. Very underrated cars and I’m not even an MG fanboy.

I had a MK2 MG ZR (ignition blue). It was the first brand new car I ever bought back in late-2004 (54-plate). Ran it for about 7 years (c.80,000 miles), and never had any head gasket issues (had some other gremlins), and I loved it. Could thrash the engine on it, and the handling was sublime. Absolute go-kart. Only downside was MG Rover went bankrupt about 6 months after purchase and I was left with no warranty. As it got older the parts also started to dry up.

Absolutely agree, the MK1 versions are so much better. Across the range of Zeds. Great impartial review, far too many trash the brand. The engineers at MG Rover worked wonders with these. 👍

I have a MG ZR mk1 which has rusted out and I recently found a Rover 200 1.8 vi VVC with 25k genuine miles, 1 owner in pristine condition for 800 euro. I'm going to convert it into a ZR. Rover/MG won't appreciate much however they are cool motors

For my first car but I got the mg zr instead, because the mg zr was more attractive to me even though it’s a 17 years old car there just fun cars, and with a new head gasket better quality made now couldn’t ask for more 👌😎
