      You have to remember, the people that own these cars LOVE to talk about how much an oil change is. "You gotta pay to play" is the motto here.

    I was at Ferarri World in Abu Dhabi a couple of weeks ago. They had a selection of 1/12th (i think) scale models for aprox £2k a peice. They are made by 3D scanning all the OEM cars and molds then using CAD to shrink them down then reproduce. They're then inspected by actual Ferarri scrutinisers (is that a word?) before going on sale.
    I can confirm they do look better than your average scale model

    My great-grand père had a massive Matchbox car collection he spent his entire life building dominating two rooms of his New Hampshire home. I was hoping to inherit some of it when he passed, but it was unfortunately passed on to other family members who promptly sold them in an estate sale. I have no doubt there were probably some valuable pieces in that collection. I also kick myself for not treating the ones he gave me when I was a little kid better, but I didn't understand their significance as a child and just kind of threw them in with my other toys where they eventually got ruined or sold in garage sales.

      @user-bt8xr5si9y Před 10 měsíci +7

      Well production errors for any kind of toy usually makes them worth more, that isn't exclusive to die-casts and to be fair the wrong color does make it a much rarer car than the hundreds of thousands that are exactly the same except they don't have that color.

    • @f104gStarfighter52
      @f104gStarfighter52 Před 10 měsíci +3

      @@DarkSession6208 It all has to do with supply and demand, misprints, paint errors, etc are usually caught before they leave the factory so very, very few actually make out to buyers. This results in the price going up as people who collect [insert item] want to have this rare item that few others have. Although i agree the prices do get very ridiculous

    • @user-bt8xr5si9y
      @user-bt8xr5si9y Před 10 měsíci

      @@DarkSession6208 No you see this is different for actual cars.
      You want your car to be as advertised because that is likely why you bought it. If your actual car has a manufacturing error in it you'd want that to get fixed, this is why stuff like recalls exist.
      However toys are just that, toys and a toy car having a color that is very rare does make it much more valueable to collectors of such toy cars because it is much rarer.
      That is why I said this extends to most toys but it doesn't extend to things you actually have to use on a daily basis like an actual car.
      Personally I would not pay thousands of dollars or even hundreds for a toy car just because it has a different color but some people do and I do get why.

    My family actually has probably about 50-60 model cars. Most of them from the 50s-80s. My grandfather bought and collected these, had them on a piedestal in the living room. Forbid anyone to ever touch them. Once he died my mum inherited them, and they are still in a piedestal, or most of them are. They are now toys to some of our nieces. But I am sure my mother does not let them play with the most expensive ones. But these cars look insanely detailed.

    I have to disagree with Donut on the pricing of those Ferrari models. Coming from the model railroad community, I've seen similarly sized models with a near or equal level of detail going for around $1,500 - $3,000, depending on the gauge, series, manufacturer, and model type. Lionel for example is notable for their Vision Line series, where everything from cab interiors, extra lighting, steam/pressure valves, emptying coal loads, steaming whistles, swinging bells, oscillating lights, and scale couplers are modeled. You can get even more detailed with larger models and there's some enthusiasts who have scale model steam locomotives that run off of actual steam with real working physical controls. You only start to see figures around $10,000 - $20,000 when you get to the models large enough that you can actually ride them. This just seems like another case of Ferrari being Ferrari and overpricing everything.

    I build model cars as well. Kits are going for $30+ now but then when we add photo etch parts, paint, clear coats, 3d parts and other things. It tallies up to $125 or more and if you want a specific person to paint the car it will go for $250. But the answer Why would anyone would pay that much, here's a quote my old Boss told me, "Cuz I can Afford it and you can't" No truer word than that. 😂😢

    Most of those rarities are worth only to specific brand collectors, people who have collections of only 1 brand (mostly Hot Wheels or Matchbox). They're not meant so much for car enthusiasts.
    Nowadays there are other brands in the marker that deliver high quality models for not too much money, such as MINI GT, Tarmac Works, Kyosho, POP Race, and many, many more, these are aimed towards car enthusiasts who don't care too much about rarities, brands, or nostalgia.

      Diecast cars collecting is a thing since the late 20th-century. Hot Wheels and Matchbox aren't the only 1:64 diecast manufacturers out there. Here are some more examples:
      Mini GT (Hong Kong)
      Tarmac Works (Hong Kong)
      Ignition Model (Japan)
      InnoModels (China/Hong Kong)
      LCD Models (China)
      Micro Turbo (China)
      For these brands, their cars don't classify as toys, but collector models.

    I have a feeling that the reason people would be willing to spend so much on these Model Cars is the same reason Watch Collectors spend so much. They are almost guaranteed to hold if not increase in value. So it’s essentially like investing in gold to that you can also display.

    • @cenciende9401
      @cenciende9401 Před 10 měsíci

      Except that would only make sense if they were then sold at a later date, which collectors are not want to do because it defeats the purpose of having a collection, so it's irrelevant.

  • @Cheeky_Goose
    @Cheeky_Goose Před 10 měsíci +3

    I think the answer to "Why?" is the same as the trading card and collectors video game market. A lot of these collectors marketplaces (most, I'd argue) artificially drive up the prices so that when a rich sucker eventually gets their hands on it, the sellers can cash out. It's usually a pretty complex system run by just a few people at the top, but there's also a lot of real collectors mixed in there.

    • @sethmatteson8326
      @sethmatteson8326 Před 10 měsíci

      Honestly though it's not artificially driving up the prices like how you describe it when what's really powering the inflation is a rat race. I know how the collecting community is because I've been in it for some time... and theyre like a bunch of rabid, wild animals when something new and popular comes out. People have gotta have it before the other guy so they can become king of the hill and prove their dick is 1/10 an inch longer than the other dude's. The point: it's not just a few dudes at the top driving up the prices. People want what's rarest, what's newest, what's popular, and what holds market value well like RLC cars, Redlines, Super Treasure Hunts, etc., and there is a big market avalible for people who can get the rare stuff for cheap and resell it at a price point majority of collectors are willing to pay. Highrollers are the ones who usually get into the 1000s terrirtory. The people who make good money from it are the ones who can get the rare stuff in bulk and sell auction style or BIN prices. On top of that, people don't just collect to hoard they collect to resell, and I think that the prevalence of resellers is what makes the market pretty toxic. Everybody wants to resell, so you have people who make a system of it by getting multiples of things cheap and then marking up for higher than they paid. Honestly, it's just a ridiculous pursuit. What strikes me so much about it is how collectors will spend to their own detriment just to feel accepted and have status in a community.

    • @cenciende9401
      @cenciende9401 Před 10 měsíci

      All value increasing beyond inflation is technically artificial. But it is easy to see the pathetic scalpers etc in my collecting hobby too, listing items 25-50% or more above market purely out of greed and an attempt to massively drive up values for no reason. Complete lowlife losers.

    • @flurpoid
      @flurpoid Před 10 měsíci

      High pricing (even when it's irrational) also creates a sense of desirability to some people. Some people's sole prerogative in collecting is owning something "valuable" and sought after. Scalpers know these types of people are extremely easy to take advantage of, that's why prices are so inflated for mass produced models.
