Have you wondered how you can produce looser, more expressive work in sketchbooks? I have a lot of techniques that I follow to help with this. In this video I share now I create a collage background in a concertina sketchbook as a start point for subsequent working over with other mixed media.
My subject for this is the ramshackle buildings that are the focus of a new body of work for me. Keep following my channel to learn more.

The books already gorgeous, Liz . It will be treasure when it's done.
Thanks Anna I think the messiness makes it quite appealing with these approaches!
I am literally collaging a background on my 1st concertina and I jump on here for background viewing and your video was first in the recommended list! Perfect timing! 😊
Hi Jane how brilliant is that. I’m so glad I’m being found ! Let me know if you have any questions about it. Thanks so much for watching. The concertina is from SeaWhite of Brighton which I find really good value. I often use the smaller pocket one too.
they are great... ironically I have promoted and sold the seawhite sketchbooks for ages but never worked in one myself 😂 today is the day! the perks of having stock to hand 😊
@@AldridgeCrafts perfect!!
Love it! Always wanted to do a concertina book but have never known how to start! Thank you! Thank you! For putting on u Tube. Every time I've approached doing an online workshop the costs have been prohibitive and out of my reach. Really happy that this Is something accessible to those on a tight budget, especially with the current high cost of living.😊
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yes the cost of living is a challenge for many of us.
There are lots of different approaches to using a concertina. This is just one of the approaches I use. The collage background startpoint inspires a looser and less representational image.
This is really great Liz. I love the variety of pieces you use for collage. The mark making is great too. You’ll have such fun drawing your ramshackles into your sketchbook.
Hi Miranda thanks so much for your comments. I think variety can help although I guess that’s a balance with it not being too much of a muddle! It will be interesting to see how it turns out!
I look forward going back to visiting my Springfield park in the autumn so your constertina projects are devine for me.
Hi Leila that’s great- fingers crossed for some lovely autumn weather for you to do that.
I loved this, thanks Liz for sharing your process, I have a lot of old barns and farm houses around here that I'd like to try this method with. I absolutely LOVE your work!!
Great !- enjoy your explorations and thank you very much .
Fascinating! I’m new to concertina books and can’t wait to get started. Thanks.
You are welcome
Love watching your process Liz, can’t wait to see what you do with the book once you start drawing/painting in it. 😀 x
Thanks Maria ! I’ve also created the background for a smaller pocket one that I will work over too. x
These pages are so inspiring.
Thanks Rebecca - always turns out best when I don’t think too much!
It’s looking super already ❤ …. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much Dorothy. In the next stages it will hopefully come into its own! It’s a bit generic at the moment!
I saw the picture of the concertina book on your video and subscribed. I look forward to watching your channel and previous videos. Rachelle, Australia 😊
Hi Rachelle welcome to my channel and thanks for subscribing!
Fascinating Liz! In the couple of concertinas I've done I've always started with ink/paint before adding collage. You've inspired me to reverse that. Thank you!
You are welcome Karen. I treat it pretty much as a background so when I work over it could change dramatically. I’ve just created another one using a pocket concertina ( will show the process on a reel/short) so now I have 2 to work over. Hopefully I will sell at least one of them!
Really look forward to seeing how you develop this. I love making a collage background but often struggle to develop it.
Thanks Mary!- we will see how it turns out!
Great place to start! So random.🙂
Hi Melinda yes to a point it is although you’d be surprised how that makes for a better outcome!
This is so interesting. I’ve done a few concertina books and love seeing people’s different approaches. Look forward to seeing the follow up to this.
Thanks Carolyn I’m glad you found it useful.
I love your finished product. I can’t wait to to which mediums you use next to work on each page.
Thanks Sarah - it’s usually a mixture but we will see!
great video, thanks Liz
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I started a concertina that I made myself. Starting with ink and water. The next layer wil be collaging. I never do that, but seeing your randomly sticking on I will give it a try.Thank you for this video.
You are welcome Dieneke. This is just the background hence the randomness. It will be one more considered later .
Lovely x
Thanks Susan- will see how they turn out!
beautiful video. I am just getting into collaging and this is a great video. thank you for sharing. I do have a question about the white gesso you are using. It seems like it is not straight white gesso, did you tint it with a little bit of yellow paint? Thanks for any other info.
Hi thanks for your comments. I am so glad that the video was useful. No the gesso is just white gesso, no yellow paint. Its use here is first to simplify a little because it’s quite busy. It also means that the inks interact with the gesso surface to add interest. I hope that helps.
Thanks! You only put matte medium on the back and not on the front to seal it? Is that to help you still add more on top, like pen or markmaking?
Was this concertina made from one large piece of watercolour paper? It looks bigger? So far the collage was very interesting to follow.
Hi Caryl thanks for commenting; no it is an A5 SeaWhite of Brighton concertina sketchbook. They are very good value and are cartridge paper but doubled up.
@@LizAckerley Thats interesting will definitely search and take a look see. Love your work.
@@carylpark7192 thanks Caryl I use these SeaWhite concertinas a lot ( mostly the pocket size that is smaller than the one here)- I use it on both my online courses : lizackerley.podia.com/making-your-mark and lizackerley.podia.com/your-sketchbook-journey
