  • By request I've made a 'how to make a an easy concertina sketchbook zine' video for you guys this week. A few watchers asked me to share how I make these little concertina zines from watching my last sketchbook tour video-so here you are. I take you through step by step the tools you need, dimensions and the size of paper you need to create one. Once you get the hang of it they're really quite simple to make and adjust to the size you want. In the next video I'll demonstrate how I fill one- stay tuned!

    Lovely video Mel thanks for sharing. I had a go at this last year inspired by you and filled it with sketches of Porthleven from my recent holiday. It was great fun. Looking forward to the next one 🙂

      Thankyou!! Yes- and once you get the hang of it the possibilities are really versatile in terms of size and shape. Excited to hear how you get on!

    Hi Mel, thanks so much for the video, I love the cover idea. I have made several small ones from A4 cartridge paper and then stick covered cardboard on each end piece for the covers. Also an idea I had which works very well and helps me from being so judgmental of my art, I paint the A4 paper however I want, do mark making etc, usually I don’t like the whole piece, so I then cut it into a concertina, but differently to yours, lots of videos on YT, you need to glue two of the pages, but you end up with a nice jumbled mix of the original painting and suddenly I love most pages, then I can do further work on the mini pages. I’m not sure if any of this makes sense

    • @MelanieChadwick
      @MelanieChadwick  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes!! That's a great way to create, have done it a few times and always end up with surprise combos and unusual marks- such a fun way to loosen up too.

    I am so happy to have watched this. Thank you! I’ve never seen anyone make a book cover for a concertina. I wasn’t totally clear, without having tried it myself yet, how one width of the paper-I’m assuming it’s the sam width as one half of the concertina-would cover outside and in of the front and back concertina fold/page, plus have a spine and be a perfect fit. I will have to try it out, but is the cover sheet including the spine the same size as the sheet with which you made four concertina pages???

    • @MelanieChadwick
      @MelanieChadwick  Před rokem

      Thank you! It's a really fun concertina to make, actually a lot simpler than you imagine. The cover is basically the same size as one of the panels, I think I said I made it slightly wider in this video but actually, it's fine to just use one of the panels to make the cover. I can make it all from one sheet of A2 paper with a spare panel or I could join that to make it even longer!

    Soo hapy you made this video!, I have just begun to make my own zines after being inspired by Natasha Newton as it's something she and I have both talked about doing. I am definitly going to follow this and try making my own concertina zine and cover. I will use paper from Seawhite as I love their postcards (tahnks to you reccommendation) to make my zines.The size of this realy appeals to me. I have been making 8 page zines fom cutting and folding an A4 piece of paper,but wondered how to make a concertina one. I know the artist Karen Stamper uses concertina sketchbokoks too and I have wondered how to make one,so your timing of this brilliant video is perfect!!! Iloved the previous video where you showed us your completed concertina sketchbooks and I hoped you would show us how you made them and you have!,I think making a cover/jacket is a lovely little finishing touch too.Thank you for sharing this,I'm really inspired!!(matt)
    P.s I have told Natasha abot this video too because it's something she is looking into creating as well. I loved the opening shot of one of your concertina sketchbooks with all those tins in the background.
    I have just discovered by chance you can make a concertina zinesketchbook foma single piece of A4 paper by folding,cutting and glueing but am soo going to try the way you show in this video.

      @MelanieChadwick  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Matt, when you get into the world of zine making you'll find so many different ways to create one. I have created them from one piece of paper and know Karen Stamper's work too. I like how with this one you can create a really long one just by adding more panels or change it up by altering the dimensions, it's really versatile. Let me know how you get on!

      @@MelanieChadwick I have been making zines already,but am going to try a concertina one this week,I am following you on Pintrest bu the way and you find me on there by searching for "A Virtual Canvas" you will see the zines I have already posted on there which I'm selling as well as I created a board to showcase them.Did you know Seawhite sell concertina sketchbooks,in one of her recent art haul videos Natatasha Newton shows one one these a small one that also comes in a slip case. Can't wait to see you follow up video on how you paint in your concertina sketchbooks. I think it would be nice to make a cover for these out of say marbled paper if it were being given as
      a gift.

    • @MelanieChadwick

      Thanks Matt and yes- I bought one of seawhites concertina sketchbooks a few years back- and filled it with landscapes. I'll take a look on Pinterest too. I can imagine a marbled cover would make the zine a special gift.
