    In this video I share how I add collage to my mixed media paintings and discuss the reasons why I use collage in this way. I explain its value in creating abstract paintings. If you are interested in collage or want to know how it can help in abstract work, then this video is for you.
    I also share aspects of my Ramschackles work: what it is and something of the history of these places. I hope to have some of the works ready for ‪@bordersartfair7065‬ from 15-17th March 2024. If you'd like to find out more/get tickets and hear more about my painting approaches then please do sign up for my monthly newsletter. You can do that here:

    Absolutley think our process is sometimes just as strong a metaphor as the subject or images we choose. These look full of lovely potential 😊

      Hi Rachael, thanks for your comments. Yes I think you are right, I certainly think that process is all important (for my work anyway and I think a lot of us are similar in that regard). Time will tell how these evolve!

    again a very beauty video Liz. What touched me the most is your story of why you used the collaging.

      Hi Tim thanks so much for your kind comments. I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. I think it’s the stories that keep us going with the work and the attempts at creating a feel for the places that keeps me moving forward. I’m so glad you like the work.

    Great concept for the Ramshackle series. You are inspiring me to think along similar lines with regard to some places in the USA.

      @@LizAckerley I agree. I also am enthralled by old buildings in a ramshackle state. I like old brick buildings as well. I look forward to more on this series.

      Hi Melinda thank you for commenting. I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. Yes the art is driven by my intentions for the work and experiences and feelings for the subject. At this stage I don’t know how it will evolve exactly!

    Do you ever wet your collage papers before gluing them? Also can you talk about picking a focal point for piece? When do you consider composition in your process? Thank you and I loved the work shown. Would love to see the process as it completes the work.

    • @LizAckerley
      @LizAckerley  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Susan no I never wet my papers before hand. Not sure why I’d want to do that. What’s important to me is that the papers don’t disintegrate with the moisture so I ensure I coat in gloss medium and drying before using paint over. Composition is considered ongoing from around the middle stages of the work. Once a composition is fixed the expressive play is more limited and so I try not to get too thinky too early- otherwise it gets too rigid and stifled. I don’t aim for a single focal point in my work- I aim for the viewer to explore the whole picture plain through contrast of the elements. I hope that helps.

    I really enjoyed hearing about your process. I use a lot of collage in my hobby sketchbooks. As a professional artist what do you find is the best medium to stick things down please Liz? I just use a glue stick or some PVA but the glue stick doesn’t always adhere if the surface has any kind of sheen on it as you know, and the PVA dries shiny.

    • @LizAckerley
      @LizAckerley  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi Jane, thanks for your comments. I think it depends on how it fits with your process. However, from what you are describing I suggest using either Matt Mode Podge or matt acrylic medium. What you saw me use in this video is gloss acrylic medium. I use gloss in my paintings because I am using it both to stick down papers and to seal in layers and bring out the colour. Then at the end I use a varnish or wax to create a matt finish. This will all be discussed in my forthcoming course: Your collage compositions too. I hope that helps.
