How I create a large Intuitive Abstract Painting - From Start to Finish

  • In this video I created a large floral intuitive abstract.
    What I do first is I mixed colours with my gesso before applying. For this painting I used ;
    White gesso
    Black
    Titanium White
    Quinacridone Crimson
    And Pyrole Red
As you know I don’t paint from a reference or a picture, instead I make marks with charcoal stick.
    What I love the most is choosing the colours for the painting, in this case here what I used in different form from fluid to heavy body;
    Paynes Grey
    Cobalt Teal
    Orange
    Cadmium Yellow
    Phthalo Turquoise
    Phthalo Green Shade
    Pink
    Luminous Green
    Black
    White
    Green Gold
I hope you will enjoy this video and if you need more information, leave me a comment.
    Thank you for watching

I recently discovered your wonderful painting videos and have not been able to take my eyes off of your demos.😮 I am 85 and have painted in various mediums and styles since I was 20. I consider myself a professional artist (painting, exhibiting, teaching etc) but "retired" 5 years' ago and now paint mostly for myself. I am eager to try something new, love abstracts, and am excited to use your brave and colourful techniques in my own studio. I live in Ottawa Ont. I am very grateful that you share your incredible talent with others. Thank you.

      Dear Arlene,
Thank you so much for your incredibly kind and heartwarming message! It truly means the world to me to hear from a seasoned artist like yourself. I am deeply honored that you've found inspiration in my painting videos and are eager to incorporate some of the techniques into your own artistic journey.
Your wealth of experience and passion for art is truly inspiring, and it's wonderful to hear that you're excited to try something new, especially in the realm of abstracts. I'm thrilled to be a part of your creative exploration.
It's messages like yours that remind me why I love sharing my art and techniques with others. Knowing that I can inspire fellow artists like yourself brings me immense joy and fulfillment.
It's also lovely to hear that you used to live in Chelsea, Quebec, not far from Ottawa! What a small world. I hope you have fond memories of your time there.
Thank you again for your kind words and for being a part of this incredible artistic community. I wish you all the best in your creative endeavors, and I can't wait to see the beautiful artwork that you create in your Ottawa studio.
      Warm regards,
      Marie Manon, Calgary Alberta xo

I found this quote in a book once and for me it applies to this piece:
"One piece of art, arresting and powerful, would fully engage the senses in any given space and without the need for more." I would never tire of gazing at it :)

You are like me as I always use gesso. I love to paint with gesso. I like abstract and I do abstract mainly because I find realism too hard and I don't have patience. Least abstract gives us types confidence to paint.

Did you know when you laid the charcoal it would represent flowers? I understand the nature of intuitive painting, and it looks like each stroke suggests the next or the next colour. What a cool way to paint. Lovely result.

Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to watch my painting process. I'm glad you appreciate the intuitive nature of my work. When I laid down the charcoal lines, I didn't necessarily know that they were going to represent flowers. Instead, they were just part of my process of discovering what the painting was going to be. Each stroke and color suggest the next step, and it's always exciting to see where the painting will take me. I'm happy with the end result, and I'm glad you enjoyed it too. Thanks again for your support!"

I do have one question. I am a fiber textile artist and learned so much just from watching you paint. When you do the charcoal sketch at the beginning, what are you thinking? Is it a sense of a final product or your hand just moves to create a flow?
Just gorgeous. I will be exploring your channel more.

Brushes and paint somehow become magic wands and pixie dust in your hands! If I could paint abstract even half as accurately and fearlessly as you do, my life would be complete! For now I'm just a baby (well, an old one), and you're the only artist I can find on CZcams that paints in a similar way as I do. Watching this wonderful painting develop was a real treat, thank you. I do have one question - what is the board with an opening in it for when you are signing?

Hello, I am new to your channel and find your abstract painting process fascinating; so glad I found your work. I often use watercolor paper and/or canvas to paint. However, I notice you use very large piece of paper; would you share what type you use? Do you eventually have your pieces professionally framed? Wish I had the space to paint this large.

Dear Sami, thank you for your question, I wipe my brushes when I feel they need it on a roll of sponge paper. I also love when two colours are touching each other and they blend just a bit on each sides. It’s one of my techniques 😊

@@samirobbins5071 I paint with Golden open paint. And some Liquitex colors that Golden doesn't make that I like. I thought she might be using Golden because she lists Green Gold, which is a Golden color, but Luminous Green is not. I think the Luminous Green is probably the Holbein brand. I haven't tried that. But I love Golden Open. And I need it in the semi-arid desert where I live. It can get so dry that acrylics sometimes dry almost immediately when they touch the canvas. I always mist my canvas before applying paint. So, too quickly.

Chère Marie, I am assuming you are French because of your family name… Had you already painted the canvas with grey acrylic or a mixture of white and black gesso? Did you have an idea in your mind when you started this gorgeous painting? Opps, i just read your opening explanation which I should have done before I wrote my comment. I was fascinated to learn that you mix your paint with gesso. Can you explain why please? By the way, if you are the person who is writing the responses to people’s comments, I expect your spoken English must be pretty good xx
