Winter camping in the mountains can have some unique challenges while travelling. Once you get to camp, there are a lot of things you need to do that are unique to winter. This video goes over my winter camping camp routine, tent setup, and cooking.

This is the most value-giving and underrated outdoors/hiking/backpacking channel on CZcams. Thanks for all the great content Justin.
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Totally agree! I used to guide groups winter camping and sooo wished I could have showed these awesome videos to the participants beforehands. Good job Justin! I had the 3 person version of the Nemo, best bomber winter tent ever.
Can't agree more! Recently I was rewatching his contents haha.😀
Love that anchor tip! Never seen that before.
Same for me !
That was by far one of the greatest winter backpacking tips video I’ve ever seen. That was awesome. Dude...U’r trick w/ the string & the dead mans anchor, unhook it & pull the string right out...nothing shy of brilliance my good sir. That was big pimp’n rite there!!
Superb to see you with another video! Lot of love and respect from a solo mountain hiker from Chitral Pakistan!
2 years and 58.3k views later… evergreen wisdom here, @JustinOutdoors. While I’m not new to winter camping, I’m still learning. Highly nutrient dense content, sir. Thank you.
This is my favorite video in your winter camping playlist. So many good tips and tricks and I love how you explain your camp routine. I am training and practicing to do my first winter overnight backpack and your videos are so helpful!
Thanks for this one. I did my first winter camping trip this month, and when I got to camp I was just overwhelmed by the cold. Picked a bad campsite, couldn’t get a good tent pitch, and just ended up going to bed. Your video and my own lessons learned has me ready to try again. I think my main lesson is to have a good campsite in mind to hike to. Winter is not a good time to be searching for decent sites at least when you are new to winter camping.
Depending on how snowy the woods are where you are hiking, winter backpacking is kinda like hammock camping during the 3 seasons whereby you can camp anywhere you and your snowshoes or skis can stomp down a level spot in the snow for a tent. Dig a little footwell by the front door and cook just outside the tent door(CAREFULLY). Make sure to put the stove on some of wide flotation or you’ll lose your Mac cheese in the snow! Or, heaven forbid, coffee😬! A lot of folks, like myself, like to keep it simple and small during winter camping. No diggin big snow kitchens or fires. Make dinner, eat, go for a night hike to warm the body and enjoy the stars then get your ass in that 20 below bag! Watch some netglix or read a book! See ya in the morning!
Relatively, an extremely good presentation style you have in these videos. I appreciate how you spell things out so clearly, mentioning details most others might not consider which benefit the learners like myself.
Man, keep on rocking Justin! Another winter hurluberlu here, from Quebec. Just wanted to let you know that your attitude is so contagious and encouraging that is truly amazing. Your content is quite rare and genuine in these brand-obsession and showing-off times. Highly enjoyable even for those of us with a bit of experience. Our country is not a country, our country is the winter, as we say here. Merci beaucoup, man!
Totally agree from a Washingtonian here just getting into backpacking this year and enjoying both WA and BC. Most other channels are a bunch of car campers pretending to be ultralight backpackers. Justin lives and loves it, and it shows. Thanks for making really authentic content! I’ve learned a lot from you.
Your videos are very well done, Im surprised you don't have more subscribers but im sure you will get there with this level of quality! Thanks for all the hard work you do!
Always good videos. Your deadman guyout line tip is brilliant! Not only is it effective, but it reduces pack weight/bulk which is a key necessity for winter backpacking. Thanks for sharing.
Expected just a few winter video's, but you've made a great collection by now! Informative and nice to watch as always 😎👍
Agree, best winter video series going. He should offer a DVD with all of them on it...
Thanks for all the good advice Justin. You cover details really well. Great education and information. So grateful that we have you as a resource.
Your videos are so well thought out and so informative, especially for a beginner camper. I'm learning so much from your Winter camping videos and looking forward to buying all my gear and getting out there eventually. Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge! :)
Justin, your tips are brilliant - thank you for teaching me more about snow camping!!!
That snow anchor trick is genius man. Thank you for the info.
Thanks for another great video! Winter camping is when the most things can go the most wrong, so covering the basics like this is essential to new and veteran backpackers alike. Well done.
Dude! Wonderful hiking shots on the way in! I’ve never seen someone wake up so chipper after a night sleeping in a tent. That’s awesome. Great video!
dude!!! I love the way you get your snow anchor out!!!!! nice!
Winter is the most underrated season for hiking, for sure. Thanks for a couple of new tips that in our mental files 👍🏼
Great job on this video and on top of snowshoes you did double hiking duty for those shots. Respect!!!
Thank you for managing to pack so many expert tips into each video. You will have undoubtedly saved many folks from having to learn things the hard way! You're doing a great job with these videos. Please keep 'em coming! :-)
Winter camping looks & feels intimidating, your videos are helping me to prepare for trying it. Thank you!
Good advice, especially on winter hydration. In cold weather it feels like hydration is not as necessary as summer but it is every bit as necessary. BTW, I prefer to use back country skis and skins but I do have a pair of MSR Lightning Ascent 'shoes that are good on steep, wooded terrain. At night I remove my 3 mm thick closed cell divers' socks and tehwet thin poly liners. The wet, stinky liners go in a ZipLoc freezer bag, as my feet dry I don new liners and heavy wool "sleep socks". 3 mm socks turned inside-out go in the foot of my mummy bag along with my SCARPA or SOREL boot liners. Warm liners in the AM are a MUST.
You’re amazing, you make all this seem so easy and you narrate beautifully.
Thank you for sharing, this vid is really informative and encouraging.
Love winter hiking myself and its always nice to tune in and check out your videos! Great stuff man :)
This is such a great video for winter camping tips! Thanks for the great content and information.
Oh my gosh!! Your trick for the guy out line is amazing! Last time I was having to hack through ice because it was sunny during the day and melted and froze around my guy line! Haha thanks for the great tip. Great share today!
Thanks Justin, you showed some great tips that were new to me, very much appreciated.
Going on my first real winter solo overnight trip tomorrow. I've been watching your vids for a few months now and couldn't wait to get more snow here to try it out. Love the vids! From the other side of Canada (NB) :)
Winter camping sounds so adventurous! 🔥 Any tips for keeping warm and cozy during those chilly nights?
Another fantastic and super helpful video. Thanks so much for taking us along and for sharing so much info!
Love the scenery
Enjoyed this video. Thanks for making it!
Excellent video! I will be applying some of these techniques on my next winter trip!
going winter camping this weekend. thank u so much for this video man. liked and subscribed
Great deadman’s idea! I’ll try it out this weekend!
Whats with the yellow water .. lol I was told to stay away from yellow snow!! Another great trip thanks for all that you do
I had some electrolytes in there, ahaha
Another awesome video, Justin. So many great tips!
Great info for winter camping!
Justin, I have been following you for a couple of months now and I love your winter content. We don't get much snow here in Connecticut. I have to head to the White Mountains to get good snow. I like the helpful advice you provide in your videos.
Great video. Best winter content and advice on CZcams. 👍🏻👍🏻
Wow. Stunning environment. Thanks from my office cubicle for your dedication lol
Loved this video. Lots of good advice
Love the intro! So uplifting. Good call on the tree bombs PSA also
Another great video. Awesome information and enjoyable delivery! Well done, thank you for the great content!
Best video I've seen in a while. Thank you...
Very well done. That kind of trip is not as easy as you make it look. Glad you stayed safe.
Wow! Gorgeous landscape! I’m jealous... Here, south of Montréal there’s almost no snow. I’d have to drive a hundred kilometres to find a mountain that’s not privately owned. Thank you for making us part of your trip!😃
That was a brilliant video. Very informative and interesting. I've only really winter camped once and I got caught out a little with unexpected hail and snow. I wish I had seen this video beforehand, I was freezing and making so many mistakes... Great job!
Great tips. I had forgotten about letting the packed snow sit for 30 minutes to harden.
For inverted canister stoves, you usually start them upright until the preheat tube gets hot, then invert the canister (similar to priming a white gas stove). It’s usually helpful to use a wind screen / heat reflector too.
You are super helpful! I smashed that like button so quick lol
So much great information. Love the dead man carabiner hack... thanks for sharing it🤙
Always fun to watch!
Thanks for the really informative video. Can’t wait to get more snow down here in Montana!
Very awesome vídeo. Beautiful place, love the snow! Hugs from Brazil
amazing channel. thank you so much
Awesome video, learned a lot! ty
Awesome video Justin, fascinating detail
Awesome tutorial 🤙🏻 🥾 🏔
I enjoy your videos and tips. I love to go backpacking and I try to go every weekend or every other weekend at least. I would love to go camping in the snow but unfortunately we don't get much snow here in central North Carolina. I will have to plan a backpacking trip up north so I can enjoy the snow! Stay safe and I look forward to your videos!
I just ordered a jacket and a few pairs of gloves from Decathlon thanks for the great tips
Beautiful scenery and day Justin
For my winter trips, (-15, -30C) I used Coleman gasoline in a Svea 123, and a Coleman 440C Multifuel.
Both worked fine; as the gasoline has more BTUs than canister fuel. Both lit in the cold no problem!
Nice work, thanks for the tips 👍👍
Thanks for the water boiling tip 👍
Cool Tips
Justin you are throwing out some great video's! I don't know what your day job is, but you might be retiring early. Keep it up!
I love the sunglasses 😎
Your a rock star Justin
Super informative, thanks for explaining how to pack down the snow and the importance of letting it harden for 30 minutes. I had no idea 👍
Another amazing video Justin! You have the perfect balance of trip vlog/education style. I love watching all of the "mundane" things that go on around camp/along the hike. You always seem to answer so many questions I have, and ones that I didn't even know I had! One question I still have for you though, how do you efficiently dry your hiking clothes in winter? I shudder at the thought of having to put on damp/frozen clothes in the morning. Keep up the great work!
Hey Alex! The key for me is mostly use polyester clothing. With polyester only absorbing 0.4% of it's weight in water, it is at-worst a little damp. If I wear it a bit while doing my camp chores, most sweat evaporates off. I then will air the hiking clothes out a bit and then then fully dry. When I put them on in the morning, they are a bit cold, but heat up quickly since they aren't frozen.
@@JustinOutdoors Thanks Justin! I agree with polyester clothing, it's moisture management is second to none. I'll definitely use that idea of drying out your clothes by wearing them while setting up camp.
Thanks Justin..!
Im watching. 💚🌍
Nice tip with the string and the deadman anchor! I'll have to try that one. Another one I saw, but you didn't mention was the Reflectix sleeve you put your meal in while it rehydrates to stay warm. One thing I always carry and make up is a thermos of boiled water. You can have a hot chocolate drink on the trail or you can fill a cup half fill of hot water and add snow to cool it down, but give you more to drink. Awesome video! Cheers
Oh man! This was an action packed trip and I actually cut out half the tips and tricks I filmed. They'll have to show up in another video! Thanks for the thermos tip! I will sometimes bring ones as well.
Good video!!!
As someone who never has to deal with snow, no matter what month I go out, this was so interesting!
Justin, I apologise if I don't comment that much, as I typically watch these on a smart TV with a bigger screen, which is crap for writing comments. But I do enjoy these and I've purchased a few of your recommendations and not been disappointed! Thanks! Dave J
No worries DJ! I usually watch CZcams the same way, so comment not as often as I'd like!
@@JustinOutdoors 👍
jampacked of info thanks Justin
Best thing Ive done for my winter cooking has been to make a stand out of a license plate for my msr whisperlite. Seeing as how you cant buy the uco mightlite base anymore. Old license plate. Couple machine screws with nylon all round and shock cord made a perfect one.
I did that trail earlier on this winter, I think that last section from arnica lake to the campground catches alot of people out, its a brutal snowshoe if you have to break trail, good on you for doing it with an overnight pack, it was hard enough with just a light day pack!
It gets much less traffic than I thought! Luckily I always leave myself buffers in the winter
Great job out there Justin! Thanks for sharing. I’m guessing the parks are still operational out there.
That they are!
Hey Justin! You literally said: 'Good morning. I'm gonna wake up.' 😂😂 This video was awesome! Thanks for taking us all through your step by step camping routine! I almost felt like I was out there camping too 😎
I was only half awake :P
@@JustinOutdoors that was a great video!
Love snow camping and what a beautiful area you live in! BTW, if you bury you water bottles in the snow they will not freeze....
We’re gonna go ouuut in the woods
I asked you about the nalgene bag on a previous video. I trusted you and I'm soooooo glad I did!!! It worked amazingly well, hot water heater all night long and drinking water to boot!!!
Cold oatmeal in the morning during winter? No no no , not for me I need it hot to get started 😉 . Thanks for sharing , nice serie on winter camping !
On these Winter trips, I heated my water in the Reliable bottle, and put it in the sleeping bag.
That way I had a warm bag, and in the morning, water for my coffee.
The biggest reason for water in the snow melt pot is to not 'scorch' the snow on the bottom, giving the water a smoky taste. Such high heat essentially burns the ice crystals before it can melt. Fairly unpleasant flavor. Plenty of water in the pot solves that, creating a buffer from the heat to the snow/ice. 👌🏼👍🏼
definitely Sasquatch country!!! Yes keep your ears tuned in to noises as they are there and are extra large and furry

Beautiful trip! Have you ever considered hosting a guided trip? It would be super cool to get out and learn and experience all this in person! I have the gear but with COVID lockdowns in Ontario I haven’t been able to head out for winter camping this year! Whenever all this calms down I think it would be really cool 😎
Not at this point, haha. There are a lot of liability aspects with guiding and I'd probably want to get my guiding certs before doing so. Would definitely be cool to be able to teach in person though as I love to teach and share knowledge!
Awesome video with a lot of tips and tricks. Beautiful camp site. I have one important tip, burry your water in the snow. It stays insulated and won't freeze. I think you mixed up your drinking water with your pee bottle... 😆 🤣 😂
Great video 👍👍
Thank you for sharing. Take care Justin.
Thanks for all the great info Justin! Makes it seem doable. What’s the reason why you wouldn’t bring the Nalgene in your bag with you?
Beautiful up there!! My goodness!! I work full time for a tree company thru the winter and then come home and do caregiving for my adult daughter with a mental illness with my wife. Im hoping she can stabilize and i can do trips like this again. Thank you so so much for your hardwork with filming!! Take care ftom Massachusetts
😎 cool
Also HAHAHA there is so much snow on that table!!! It's taller then you hahaha
👍👍
Justin, we all love the AMG75 pack. I bought one based on your videos. How about doing a video showing how you pack it and what goes where, specifically for a winter trip...just a thought...Keep up the great work... Joe..
A full review of the AMG will definitely be happening! I'm still figuring out some of it's nuances and limits. Have 45lbs packed in right now for a trip, so we'll see how it does with that!
@@JustinOutdoors Awesome, can't wait. If you ever find yourself in Vermont, i go winter camping in the mountains every weekend...
Wow, I wish I had watch this before my overnight, snowshoeing trip I just did! Question: why do you carry an emergency bivvy when you have your tent with you? I usually carry one only on day hikes…
Watch for snags and Widowmaker. First thing I do is look up.
