    Just a heads up that I was mistaken about my reference to a Grizzly Bear death. A man was mauled by a female protecting her cubs, but the man played dead and survived. I just want to make sure I'm not fanning the flames of grizzly bear fear as it is quite rare for people to be killed by grizzly bears these days! The incident is also a good reminder that it's important to educate yourself on bear behavior and know how to react appropriately. Here's the article if you're curious: calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/hiker-injured-by-grizzly-protecting-her-cubs-in-kananaskis

      Yep. That was they guy near Bragg Creek. He inadvertently got between cubs and the sow. Mama bear bit him on the arm and left. Buddy didn't even have time to get his bear spray. Bear spray or firearm wouldn't have mattered as it was that fast. He was lucky.
      Anyway, it shouldn't be too much for fear, just awareness. I've been hiking K-Country since 2008. Saw some grizz at a distance and a large black bear closer. No attacks.

    One thing I would recommend is hiking poles. I don't typically use them but in the winter with a heavier pack and poor footing I think they are useful. I also think some type of reflective ground cloth is a good idea. It will reflect "minimal" heat as well as keep all your gear dry.

    • @JustinOutdoors

    As for the subject we need to hear about: winter pooping

    • @wbrussell19
      @wbrussell19 Před 3 lety +4

      As a 30-year winter backpacker with plenty of pooping experience, I'll tell you what I do. It's actually pretty simple. When I get into camp I stomp out my bathroom area wearing snowshoes. You want the area and trail to it to be well sintered of hardened snow. You won't be wearing snowshoes when you walk/run down this trail. Select your deposit spot and stomp it deeper than where you will be squatting. Stomp another hole nearby. Place some sticks and small tree branches over this second hole. This is where you will pile the used toilet paper. When you are done your business burn the toilet paper (please). Kick some snow over the offending mass and remember it's location (important for next time). Leave the toilet paper pyre in place and use it again next time.

    This video was incredibly good. Great content. Love your teaching style and how you do things. I thought for sure you'd have a hot tent setup, but this was great. You're just a bit north of me and I remember that October snow here in Spokane too. I would love to see you do a pack shake down of what all you took. Looks like I have some overlapping items but would need a few more things to make it work in -20 C temps. BTW, -40 is the crossover where C = F. Thank you again!

    Great winter trip... I live in Ontario, CA... Love winter backpacking. Keep the videos coming... I'd like to see what's in your pack, and what clothing choices you make. Just subscribed. Thank you for sharing, take care.

    What a beautiful area. I like to know more about contingency planning. So, it got a bit cold for your fab sleeping bag and you got through the night. Did you have an extra emergency thermal blanket or a second wooly blanket you could have used?

    I am going to be winter camping, hopefully. I've dabbled in cold weather backpacking a little bit. I am trying to learn as much as I can. It's hard to have a light pack, I've figured that out already.

    Question:
    How are you navigating without a beaten path?
    Aren’t your feet freezing?
    I ask cause I want to attempt snow hiking/camping

      I use a few options for navigation, my primary tool is a Garmin Fenix watch that I upload a map of the route on to, I can then follow that route with a quick look at my wrist. Secondary, I use the Gaia GPS app on my phone with the maps and routes downloaded for offline use. Third, I print off a paper topo map of the area I am going to!
      My feet run pretty warm while hiking and the bigger difficulty is managing sweat! I put the bread bags on my feet to keep sweat from getting into my boots, which helps keep me from needing to dry the boots and keeps my feet warmer! The bread bags act as a vapor barrier. I'll probably be doing a full video on vapor barriers!
