Take it the Sea to Summit pad worked well. I usually lay my outer clothes under my winter mattress for some extra "R value" and more floor space. My -20 F. ll Bean down ba is a true -20 F. bag and allI need are my base layer and a warmpolyester balaclava.
A "not for water"bottle (pee bottle) is essential in winter IF you're careful!
*Do you place your boot liners in the foot of yer sleeping bag overnight?

It wasn't quite warm enough for -25C I don't think. Probably good to -15 or maybe -20 though!

Awesome video! I think it would've been nice if you showed how you setup your tent. You gained a subscriber from Sweden! I lived in similar conditions when i received my subarctic training from the swedish army ranger regiment (Dedicated winter unit), but some things were different equipment wise. And i agree in the end where you said you got to get up and get going, there were many moments where i had to force myself to do things to continue, if youre not going to sleep, you better keep moving haha. All in all awesome video!

Going to try them with cross country ski binding mounted and boots this year. How did the bag do and what temps did you hit? Can you talk about it and the features you mentioned? You probably already know this, but I find if you have coffee (even if itâs cold) before getting out of your sleeping bag, it makes things much easier due to your heart beat increasing

Lovin' those skis!! The only problem I might see with them is the possibility of snow getting compressed and icing under the bindings if it is of a certain consistency. It would be interesting to see how well the skins work when pulling a pulk sled but I am loving the idea of moving to these instead of snowshoes in some instances. Nice video Justin! Gorgeous country!
I'm pretty sure they're rebranded OAC KAR 147s which themselves are a slight variation on Altai Hoks. Not only are they identical but both the OAC KAR and these BD skis are made in Finland. The Hoks will accommodate a 3pin cross country ski binding if desired so these may as well. Even if there was the occasional cleaning needed though I think the universal bindings are worth it from a comfort standpoint. You could wear trail runners in over boots and just go for hours.

Thanks! I'll probably keep trips at about 8min a day, so 15-10min for a 2 day trip. Longer trips = longer videos! My GDT thru-hike video is 6 hours long! haha
Have you ever thought about DIY-ing a pulk setup so you're not carrying so much on your back? I'm so dang intrigued by the idea of being able to throw everything in a sled and not having to worry so much about the weight of winter stuff!
I am only carrying 30-35lbs on my back, so not too bad. A pulk, for me, isn't worth it at those weights. Pulks are tough in the mountains because of the hilly and uneven terrain. Much better for lakes and flat areas!
It's crazy how well the body aclimatizes over the winter in canada. Good job on staying alive haha.
Hi Justin, if you don't mind me asking: I've recently decided to commit to building a youtube channel. I've experienced an encouraging start, but it's still early days. My question for you is - what are your thoughts on having a very specific and focus for a channel, vs having a more broad channel focus? For example, I see you have a second channel with a solely gear focus. The reason I ask is that I have several interests I like making videos about (outdoors, and food for example). So I'm faced with a decision to specialize or diversify a little. I know the pros say to remain laser focused, but I also feel that there is potential market if we diversify a little.

I committed on your backcountry ski video from last year and excited to see the appearance of the BD Glidelites. Looking forward to your first impressions. Particularly as a newish skier how âstableâ they are on the down and how âgrippy â on the up! Santa needs to know!
Not stable on the down at all! haha. They were quite squirrelly as soon as I hit 20km/h. I was hoping the metal edges would help more with that. Much less squirrelly in powder though. They were surprisingly sticky on the up! I was going up some pretty steep hard pack and they were doing pretty well. I was pleasantly surprised by their grip and glide. Makes sense as they are a mohair/nylon mix and you usually get a good balance with that.
Eek! It's way too early for temps like that! Down here in southern Ontario we don't get that cold until January. You can have it đ

Nice video, it is interesting that you are using MSR Isopro canisters in that deep cold. I found that if it is less than 30F the performance drops out. Do you keep it in your jacket and sleeping bag? We switch to Whisper Lite with white gas in winter.
With a preheating tube, you can use iso down to really cold temps. You're right though, with most stoves, the performance drops a lot below freezing and is pretty much non-existent below -6C/20F.
With the Whisperlite Universal it has a beefy generator/pre-heat tube so the canisters can be inverted and it actually increases the heat output by nearly 20%. If you buy canisters that contain a partial propane mix you can use them well into the negative digits as propane will stay a vapor until around -40. With the canister inverted the propane vapor will migrate to the top where it will burn last and continue to provide feed pressure for the liquid butane/isobutane. The problem is really fuel usage and cost, which white gas is much better for, but they do work in the cold. Alternately for upright only stoves you can put the canister in water and it will keep working as well since the water is warmer than the liquid/vapor temp barrier. I find this water bath really works best with stoves regulated to run on low(er) pressure like the MSR Reactor.

Sometimes Itâs hard to imagine the opposite, -25F!! Thatâs just mad! Anywho, Does a Bic lighter work in those extreme cold conditions? I have a Jetboil Stash that I love to use for coffee & whatever I mite need it for. I find it very handy. Just curious? Love Uâr channel sir!! Cheers!

The Ether Light XT Extreme isn't really made for -25C! So I wasn't toasty. haha. Warm enough, kind of. I didn't have to use the quilt as the Polar Ranger is a furnace!

How do you like the AMG 75? Do you find it large or small for 75L? What about over-filling it? I'm almost a bit surprised how much you had strapped to the outside of the pack - what on earth is INSIDE! :)
I love the AMG as a winter pack. I find it fits right on the money. The adjustable torso makes it easy to lock in the fit. The inside of the 75L is a bit smaller than I'd expect. I feel like it's closer to 55-60L when compared to my other packs. It forces me to be choosey on what I bring but I almost wish I had the 105L version.

Great Video, See the snow has come already for you.Well in Labrador, we are very late this year! Month behind and not cold at all!! I have camp out in -25c, I found my breath landed back on my face, i was socked lol had to have a towl to dry off, just find it all takes longer to get going about two hrs for breakfast.I have a pair of OAC WAP 127 had for a few years i enjoy them. Q: if I remember correctly- You used to use the Garmin Tempe for temperature reading, when and why did you change that system? Did you find the garmin tempe to not be as accurate or are you just trying something new?
The bluetooth device does a better job exporting the data. If I just wanted a quick glance at temps, the tempe is awesome, but for detailed recording (like for gear review testing), the bluetooth is great.
So that is in Banff? In grande prairie there isnât any snow but it did snow like a month ago a little bit but melted the next day

I didn't feel cold at all overnight. If anything, I got too warm. I had to take off the synthetic quilt and open up the arm vents to dump heat and avoid sweating. I could feel a bit of cold through the sleeping pad. There was quite a bit of condensation. Not a ton in the main body though because I used the condensation curtain that comes with the Tenshi. It's a curtain that separates your head area from the rest of the tent, trapping condensation there.

Hey Justin - I am very curious about your hybrid skis. I am an avid with snowshoes and winter camping but very interested in your experiences and recommendations. I've done a bit of research and seems they are generally for fairly level terrain. What are the pros/cons? Would you consider doing a short video? Do you throw your snoeshoes on your pack as backup?

Great questions! Most people can use their summer packs for winter no problem. I wouldn't worry too much about getting a dedicated winter pack. For me, I like this pack because it has a dedicated pocket for avalanche gear, belt loops for attaching mountaineering kit, and a few other features that work for me when doing trips a bit more complicated than this one.
One key aspect is you are generally carrying more weight in the Winter so you want a pack that is able too carry that weight comfortably. If you notice his summer pack is frameless and thus over 25 pounds or so will start to get pretty uncomfortable. If you are carrying over 30 pounds that is when you want to start thinking about a framed pack with load lifters and a solid belt to transfer the weight from you shoulders and back too your hips. Also something that is waterproof is nice even if you use a liner as some fabric's will absorb the snow moisture and make it heavier.

I have been looking for a good sleeping pad and have heard an air mattress should not be used because your body is trying to warm up all that cold air and you will stay cold. I also heard and saw on your video that you used a blow up sleeping pad. Just trying to figure this stuff out.
Blow up sleeping pads use some cool reflective and/or fiber technologies to provide insulation. Nothing wrong with using them in cold temps!
Any thoughts on alternatives to the Tenshi since it's not made anymore? I looked at the MSR Access 2 but I'm somewhat concerned it won't be strong enough for certain snowy conditions. There's also the other mountaineering tents that Nemo makes. I'm mostly hiking in the NE US.
I've been searching far and wide for something and haven't really found a great option. I'll probably end up using a $100 tipi tent off amazon as my main tent this winter!

The Polar Ranger is sweet in that is has the center zip but also two arm holes/vents. Between those three zippers, I find I can regulate temperature very well!
Hi Justin, I see you changed stove, couldn't the PocketRocket Deluxe not have worked out in these conditions? I have the BRS300 and have used in in -7C just fine, but not higher elevations, would you recommend the pocket rocket or the firemaple for more colder conditions/higher elevations in addition to my 3 reason brs300?
I find the PRD doesn't work super well below -10C at elevation. Isobutane turns to liquid at -11.7C at sea level. The PRD works well to around that boiling point I find but you need a stove with a preheating tube in order to use isobutane below that boiling point.

$700 for a sleeping bag, lord help me. I would never take it outside. I paid half that and act like a bum on a bologna sandwich when anything comes close to it. Btw I heard they dropped that Nemo due to exposed poles locking up in the frigid temps, making it really bad to get them broke down again.
Makes me go ummmm about my Black Diamond poles and trying a wipe of wax on the inside ferrell.

-10C is the warmest I'd use it! The center zip and arm vents do a great job venting. I've used it as warm as -3C but I was half out of it. It was plenty warm down to -25C for me. I had to move the quilt off me because I was getting too warm.
Hey Justin, Im torn between the Thermarest and Sea 2 Summit cold weather pads that you showed. Im leaning toward the Thermarest for packability and weight reasons but im worried its very loud. Any input on this? Love your channel btw, very helpful and inspiring
