- 243 Winchester Remington High Performance Rifle 80 grain pointed soft point ammo ballistics gel test fired from a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Compact with 20 inch barrel.

Leather gear: www.masonleather.com
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional. - Zábava

I think people underestimate the 243, it's a very good whitetail and even bigger game.
Delusional
@JonRangel87 you?
@@JonRangel87 you never hunted with a 243 then, that is for sure.
@@jeffbetts4254 don’t need or want one. I have superior cartridges at my disposal
@@JonRangel87 I do too.
Green screen blooper! The 80 grain .243 Winchester and 6mm Remington was the old standard weight for the varmint loads way back when. Yes, 100 grain bullets are probably more consistently reliable on deer even if they do run pretty slow out of those stubby barrels.
People forget how good this little fella is.
...ya box is see through bud!!!
Ghost Ammo
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather Don't tell the ATF!!
Predator looking
Lol! That's interesting.🤔🤣
That’s the new InvisiLoks. Deer never see them coming.
I had a Remington 700 in243 with a 26" barrel
That box was way cool until it morphed back into an ordinary Remington box.
🤣💯
Very impressive.
Thanks for your review video. I often use the federal version of this 80 (federal blue box). I've noticed on some shoulder shots on pigs and goats it doesn't go through.
Glad to be of service!
Good video yet again, but I'm commenting to tell you that the ballistic gel blocks being hit with the water is pretty cool in my book!
Haha I agree
This would make for a great pig, small deer rifle. The handiness of your featherweight compact would make an awesome all round rifle for this caliber. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to be of service! I love this rifle, it’s one of my favorites, great for small east Texas deer.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather I bet!
90 grain hot cor if you want the extra velocity vs a 100 grain and it won't come apart like this did
I have the NE lite youth it has a 20” , I’ll buy them if available but I’ll stick with the 100 sp for deer but it looks good for other critter😁.
💯
I know guys that have used it for deer hunting. It sucks but it works. You’re better off with 90/95 grain ballistic tips or core locts.
You’re incompetent. It’s a perfect varmint and deer gun. Light recoil, super flat shooting, cheap and widely available ammo. Delete your comment buddy.
I'd love to see you test the federal premium 85gr TSX. I wanna reload it in 243 but I'd love to see some results. Also 300blk fiocchi 125gr SST and 110 or 120gr barnes tac-tx.
Agree
Have you ever tested any of those HSM boxes of ammo. ? They make some rather hot loads.
That standard deviation is scary
Not too uncommon unfortunately with factory stuff
Core Lokt is specifically intended for large game. 243 is specifically not
How much for your butt stock shell holder with the bear and 45-70 on it
👍
Hey what caliber should I get out of 30/30,30.06,7mm08,450bushmaster,308 I want something for close/Medium range with recoil equal to 20gauge
350 legend
308
I live where there's Black bears,Deer,& Hogs
It’s called cartridge

I don't see why Remington would use a longer barrel for their test. Most rifle barrels for hunting should be 20" or less you'd think. (at least the rifles I see at the gun shops are) So it's likely that the speed is just off. Remington really needs to get with it. I'd be interested in know the group size as well as penetration but I'll probably never hunt with that rifle because I live in Ohio (Straight walled cartridge state). It was shotgun only when I got my Deer (been a while) and people think 12 gauge slugs are over kill but they haven't shot a Deer with them yet so.. but the 243 would be an excellent cartridge for Deer and if that's all I had I would hunt Elk with it or Black Bear with a heavy bullet. People use the 6.5 Creedmoor for Moose, so is it wrong to use a 243 for Elk? Nice video, ballistic gelatin tests do help shed some light on what to expect! Normally I would go bigger than I need. (more power guy but getting older) Have a good one!
They use a longer barrel in their testing so they can publish a higher velocity on the box.
@@BrockOBauma or they use 24 inches because its been the standard for nearly 100 years
😊
Maybe you should go with blue screen instead of green screen. 🤣🤣
I would dare say most 243s & 308s have 20 inch barrels. 24 inch test barrels don't seem realistic.
I agree
22” is the norm.
Too bad you don't make an AR in 243.
That I know of.
Dpms did at one time
@@gregz4249 I thought so but I know it's been awhile I just wasn't sure. Thank You.
Everyone still makes 243 Win ARs. Remington, DPMS, Bear Creek, Armalite, Wilson Combat, Rock River, Troy, etc..
243 win AR barrels have been around for quite awhile. But since you have to use an AR-10 receiver you may as well just step up to 6.5CM or 308Win. An AR in 30-30 win, now THAT would be interesting. If nothing else, just to have a semi-auto 30-30
sure they do but you may aswell just get it in 308 at that point
Might not be a bad load for pronghorn.
This will be year 4 of me applying for Texas pronghorn
Everyone knows that's not a real box of ammo
It’s ghost ammo 👻 🤣
