"if you're watching a 100 different videos comparing these two, just get yourself an xm3". So guilty! But might just do that. It's gonna be my first pair of ANC headphones and they are a lot cheaper. Amazing review man. Good work!
Haha - thank you! And if you go for the XM3s, you won’t be disappointed 👍
@@MarkEllisReviews been seeing some comments about hissing noises of some sort that developed overtime in both models while using ANC. You had any sort of this issue?
Also, sorry to bug you a bit. But I hear they removed the 'surround vpt' feature from the xm4. Since you used the xm3 for so long, was it a big deal or a really cool feature in your opinion?

I watched this again because I also bumped into your XM4 long term review... so I have you to thank for :)
Your reviews are very helpful! Its all about your experience, not specs. Will get 1000XM3. Thanks!
Thank you! I might have to borrow that as a tag line 😄 Let me know what you think of the XM3s - I have a feeling you’ll love them.
great review and hones! cheers from san francisco!
Thank you! Means a lot 😊
Hey Mark. Great, in-depth review. Thanks for talking about the material. Would you say the silver model will dirty easily? How has the color held up since you got them? Thanks.
I just ordered the xm4s. I get the Tuesday very excited. Good review by the way! Keep up the hard work. 👍
Thank you! You’ll love them 👍
So how was it
Very informative video and just what I was looking for.
I presume that these can be used with a Bluetooth enabled TV ??
Many thanks 👍👍
I missed most of your review because I was thinking, wow, what a handsome guy with his charming accent! I like it when you said you don't have hair 😂. Great video, mate.
Great video. Thanks a lot
Thanks Aly and thank you for subscribing!
I like what you did there my friend. Unbox those beautiful headphones in front of a beautiful Technics 1200. Instant like to your video!!!
Also here in the states there is a “Midnight Blue” version available at select outlets.
Thank you! And glad you spotted that little ‘Easter egg’ 😉
Love the vid thanks for the great time
Thank you for watching! Are you going for a pair?
Great vid keep up the good work👍
Excellent video
Very nice video, hope you do great in the future.
I have a doubt though, are the ear cushions on the new xm4's user-replaceable, I heard they were not, can you please confirm that by checking the manual or by making a video on is it possible to remove the cushions. The xm4's cost a lot and if the cushions are non-replaceable then it is a deal-breaker because usually, the cushions wear out in about 7-9 months. I hope you update us on that.
Very nice video and liked your style very much.
Thanks for the kind feedback - means a lot! I can’t find any reference to replaceable cushions I’m afraid. And I don’t fancy ripping them off in a video 😂😉 But from my experience, the XM3s are stellar in that regard. My pair have been worn to death and they’re still in perfect condition.
@@MarkEllisReviews Thanks for replying, I understand it is dumb to rip off the cushions and later realizing that they were non-replaceable.
I have already mailed Sony for clarification in this regard. XM3's had user-replaceable cushions so even if they did not last long or were accidentally torn off by a sharp object we had an option not to let go of the $350 headphones to waste by just replacing the cushions. But if XM4's do not have the user-replaceable cushions then I don't think I will be buying those because a simple accident will render them useless.
Would you please try to contact sony and update us on that because I feel I am not going to get any reply from them, it has already been 4 days.
I hope your channel grows very large so that you are not afraid to rip apart new pair of headphones :p
Great honest review, keep up the good work! 👍🏼

Hi Mark and thanks for the great review. Curious about your experience with the XM4. In a quiet environment, with NC activated, are your headphones completely noise free or you can hear a hiss? Just got my pair and I'm really impressed with the sound quality and even the NC, but it bugs me that the NC has this very low hiss like a distant waterfall.
Thank you, Alex. That's pretty normal ;)
That’s how NC works
ANC is basically creating a white(all frequencies )noise which attenuates sounds coming from outside.
That “distant waterfall “ sound u refer to is exactly the right sound it should create.
A natural example is the a roof fan, as it turn there is a slight sound, which naturally creates anc inside ur room. If u observe it will be harder to hear people talking across rooms when the fan is on
@@youtubeisnotajob4103 Great explanation - thanks!
Thanks for the review. Got the XM3 for 200$.
Good choice!
Review to the point sir .going to buy xm3👍🏻
Thank you! And you will not be disappointed - trust me.
Nice review are the 4’s any louder than the 3’s cheers
Thanks, Richard. I’d say they’re the same, really. I’ve never had a problem with volume on the 3s, but the 4s definitely have a more confident, refined sound. Nice evolution.
I got the m3 for 150 Black Friday deal considering I only have AirPods and want to use them for my switch and films then I can’t vouch the extra £100! Great review thank you 😬
Hi Mark, great review, out of interest a few months on did you keep the XM4s? and which are you using the most. I'm a bit stuck between the bargain price of the XM3 and the XM4...and for some reason still can't make a call. But since you've got both I'm intrigued now which you're using more if price was less of an issue. Cheers, G
ps: although i wouldn't use them for accurate editing, I would like a flatter more neutral sound as I use Sony MDR 7506 for monitoring voice audio when I edit. I wouldn't be replacing the MDRs but it's just handy to know if the XM4s would be better on this basis. And have you found the crown pressure much different over time between the two? Thanks in advance
.
Hi Georgie - thanks so much for the lovely comment. I've kept the XM4s and use them as my main headphones now. But honestly, the difference between the two is marginal unless you hear both, and even then it's tough to justify the cost of the XM4 over the XM3 if you can find a good price for the latter. Either will suit you perfectly, but I'd save a bit of money and pick up a pair of XM3s - you won't be disappointed. I've had no issue with crown pressure on either pair.
@@MarkEllisReviews Thanks Mark, super helpful. I've actually now had both arrive, out of interest do you have a low frequency noice on the XM4s in noise canceling? Mine seem to have it but the XM3s don't. Seems a bit odd, but no worries if yours don't do it. I guess I wouldn't if like you I now couldn't compare.
No problem! And, no, I've not noticed a low frequency during noise cancelling on the XM4s... might be a defective pair, possibly? Let me know which you decide to keep!
@@MarkEllisReviews Thanks very much, and will do ;)
Just ordered a pair receiving tomorrow excellent review. Xm3 will be put away but not forgotten .
Thanks Jeremy! You will not regret it.
How has your experience been
Xm4 is the ultimate headphone . Although the xm3 if you have pair stick with them for now are still up there . I bought the grey which look cool
Jeannie Ellis A good idea to wait , what a bargain. I do like EBay for that good deal
@@jeremythornton2464 how are the now
For whoever having clicking sound issue just reset them to factory settings
I used to use the short cable to charge the headphones on top off my desktop PC, but they had no fast charge. Since the XM4s have fast charge I will be charging them via the wall brick for sure.
Aha - so that short little cable does have a purpose!
i just order one for $200 and waiting for it to arrive, so excited ;))
you sound like Chris from coldplay.. and its amazing :D
Well, I’ll take that (bit of a Coldplay fan).
13:55 I like that feature, and I do it either way (hand over earcup was like my childhood habit when I was using the old wired cable over a HiFi set), but: Once I'm done, it still takes too long for ANC and music to resume, even at the 'shortest' setting of 15s (3 times worse than I thought).
In fairness, I’ve not tested it enough. I can see why it’d be useful, but if it takes that long for ANC to reengage, that’s pretty annoying 👎
@@MarkEllisReviews I read the review about it, and I've only tested it once on a ferry because I wasn't sure if I had to buy tickets separately or if I can just use my Hop Card (Octopus card, I'm in NZ). That was when I knew it takes a while. I just manually turn the music back on from then onwards.
Hi Mark. I am interested how the grey/silver color resists in time, especially where these are touching the skin. Thanks
I'll keep an eye, but all good so far.
Hi Mark! I reckon you would be doing a full review of these. If not then I would want to ask you how is the quality of bass on the XM4 versus the previous generation? I have been obsessing over the XM3s for six months. I have ordered three units from Amazon and returned them because I found the bass too boomy and muddy on them. I would love to know your opinion on the bass and the quality of it on the XM4s. Is it still boomy and bleeds into the mids? I may get the XM3 again since they’ve got cheaper now but I fear that I’ll get buyer’s remorse again.
Hey, Nipun! Thanks for watching and messaging. I LOVE the bass on the XM3s and XM4s. For me, it’s the right balance between deep, punchy and not too overbearing. I haven’t really experienced the boominess you have. However, while the XM4s are incredibly similar, bass-wise, they are a bit tighter I think. Overall, the sound is just more refined and confident. It’s an improvement someone like yourself would enjoy I think. If you can stretch, I’d go for them, given your experience with the XM3s. Let me know how you get on.
Mark Ellis Reviews Wow! Thanks for the prompt reply! I’d be indulging in vanity if I claim myself to be an audiophile! I’m not! But I’ve always loved the bass on Sony headphones. I’m coming from the Sony MDR-XB950BT the bass champs, and having used the Bose QC35-II and hating how shrill they get in the upper treble range, I naturally gravitated towards the XM3s. I am waiting for the XM4 to launch here in India. They haven’t yet. They’re expected sometime in September. The XM3 are available at a discount of approximately $140 (after converting from the Indian Rupee) from their full retail price. Thanks again! I really appreciate your down to earth, unpretentious approach to headphone reviews.
No hassle - thanks for the lovely feedback. I think you’ll like the XM4s...
Mark I’ve seen reviews that the XM4 is thinner and harsher in the mid and high notes vs the XM3. Is that your conclusion?
i think the "cupping the headphone" gesture is good for trains and airplanes to hear the announcements. It can become annoying when they announce the stops. With Reg headphones you end up needing to take them on and off a bunch and pause what you are doing. this feature allows the music to play softly in the background and not completely stop. Also, when doing the gesture, no one knows what you're doing since your are not talking with them, just listening to the announcements, so i don't think its weird at all. if anything this an awesome feature for ppl who travel a lot.
You make some awesome points there 👍
@@MarkEllisReviews really enjoy the channel. thx so much for the great content!:)
I like how he's comparing the cable to a kye, when there are his hands for comparison.
I have the xm3 and love them but they don't connect easily to more than 1 device so I'm using them with my iPad..Thinking about getting the xm4 for my iPhone..
I actually ordered a pair of XM4's off ebay for £170 but ended up cancelling and ordering a pair of XM3's for £130. I found it difficult to justify a pair of headphones for nearly £200 but felt less guilty about getting the XM3's, especially since there's so little difference. They're arriving soon - so excited!
You should’ve gone with the XM4’s….i just bought a pair for $250 this past Monday.
So basically,,the XM3S are just a better deal ... I noticed the same thing with Beats 2 and Beats 3.. All they did was adjust the EQ it seems lol
Is that an Ikea Markus I see? If so, well chosen!
It is indeed!
Which one is more comfortable according to your testing ? Does it heat up the ear ? Also what about Bluetooth latency ?
I think the XM4s are slightly more comfortable. But it’s negligible because the XM3s are very comfortable. Never had either pair heat up my ears either. As for Bluetooth latency, I only use them for music and therefore can’t speak to it really - apologies!
I’m going to buy the XM4 and I don’t have the XM3. I can’t decide what colour to get though 😬. Of course the black is nice and standard but the silver colour is nice too. What would you recommend? Maybe do a video comparison 🤷🏽♂️
Thanks for watching, Avinash. I actually really like both colours, but would probably say the black overall, as they're just nice and stealthy. Depends if you like your headphones to be a little more noticeable. If so, the silver do the job nicely - I like that colour too.
Mark Ellis Reviews Yeah I usually would go for the black as you can’t go wrong with them but the silver pair are nice and different.
I'm wanting to go for the black of the xm3s, simply for the copper/ rose gold ish accent in contrast to the black. For me it's just beautiful and makes them look that bit more impressive and expensive. Thank you for the review as well, gonna get the xm3s as my first anc heapdhones and I'm so excited. Currently on Amazon the xm4s are about £250 and the xm3s about £199 so tis tempting but will probably save that extra £50 as for me an extra £50 will only be for some auto pause and in my opinion not really worth it
Hi! I don’t know what to buy? I want xm4, but i like much better bass in XM3... What is your choice, if both have the same price, and both had only one difference - sound?
I'd always go for the XM4s. I prefer their slightly more refined sound and the convenience features (auto off, auto pause, etc), are genuinely useful.
I heard that in xm4, Sony dropped aptx, aptx hd from xm3. Xm4 is having Sony LDAC codec. Does it really make difference when we connect to iPhone where we don't have ladac
10:19 Are you sure you used the same codec? They dropped APTX support in XM4 so you're most likely using AAC on them.
I bought XM4 recently and realized they don't support APTX so I ordered XM3 today. I need both XM4 (AAC) for Apple stuff and XM3 (APTX) for other sources. Unfortunately, don't have any LDAC sources to use XM's full potential.
I'm afraid I'm not audiophile enough to answer that - but yes, it may have been a different codec. To me, though, there was a noticeable difference in audio quality on the XM4s playing the same track from the same device. That said, the XM3s are still an amazing pair of headphones - instant classic. You'll love them.
I had both of these actually XD, soundwise to the untrained ear there is no difference at all, but the new features of the xm4 are definitly worth it! Thus i sold my xm3 rather quickly
Is the mic good on both?
@@cinnaniniroll No both mics perform equally terrible, actually sold my xm4 now and bought a new set of bose qc45. Best decision ever. WAAAAAY more comfortable , better controls, better nc and wayy better product support
@@dricebaker6594 ohh
I am currently using XM2 and wondering if I should upgrade to XM3 or XM4 based on ANC? Or should I keep my XM2 and just change my worn earpads and wait until the price on XM4 is lower?
I’m not familiar with the XM2 at all. But here’s the question: do they give you what you want, sound quality and comfort-wise?
@@MarkEllisReviews good question! XM2 gives me great sound quality but they feel a little bit tight on the top of my head and I suspect that the ANC is better in XM3.
I think if you have doubts about the XM2 ANC and there are comfort issues - get the XM3s while they’re a bargain 😉
@cydrus: I switched from XM2 to XM4 about two weeks ago. If ANC is your only concern, well in my opinion, while you'll definitely notice a difference, it's not huge so you should wait if the XM4 gets a little cheaper. Comfortwise it's a big difference pro XM4, but this always depends on your head's shape I guess.
I almost switched to XM3 back in 2018 because it got rid of that annoying hissing sound of the XM2 when it had ANC on, but no music was playing. XM3 also had supposedly better bass without adjusting the EQ - engaging EQ on XM2 denies you LDAC. When I learned that the in-call qualities of XM3 are still modest, I changed my mind. After I heard a couple of times that XM4 improved on that and got convinced by some samples, I pre-ordered the XM4. I'm happy I did that! Engaging EQ on XM4 still lets you use LDAC, no hissing sound (since XM3) and I can confirm the in-call quality as really good. I'm in meetings for several hours every day and always had to mute myself with the XM2, but no more with the XM4, even not if a dog barks in my neighbourhood, which almost seemed to cause my colleagues physical pain earlier. I had to switch off "Speak to Chat" though as it interfered with calls, at least connected to my office laptop by DELL (Latitude E5570). Connecting the XM4 to my laptop and my Android at the same time is comfortable and works, but switches off LDAC so you'll have to live with a lower quality codec if you want that feature.
I have a quad dac on phone so my xm3 were wired a lot can't seem to find reviews of xm4 in wired mode
Should I pick the xm4 over the xm3 when it comes to comfort and build quality? I’m not sure helpp
Thanks for getting involved! There really is very little difference between the two in terms of build quality and comfort - the price difference certainly doesn’t justify the XM4s in that respect. If you just want a really, really good pair of wireless noise cancelling headphones, get the XM3s.
Great work. You really shud hv a larger following
Thanks so much! I'm only into my second year, so big things on the way :)
@@MarkEllisReviews Mark I hope you don’t mind. I dropped you an email regards to the Sony XM3 and the MacBook Air M1. Am looking to buy them on Monday. I got the silver and I had major creaking. I had to return them today at Best Buy. While I was in the store, I tried the display version and same creaking with the silver. Then, I grabbed the black and placed them on my head and NO CREAKING! So, I left store with the black ones. I wonder if your silver version creaked. All you have to do is press on the left earcup and you should be able to tell right away. I also had some sort of static/pressure in the right earcup with the silver ones and so far none with the blacks. I wonder if the problems I mentioned with the silver are universal?
Very odd. No creaking here! Sounds like you may just have been unlucky. In my experience, the build quality with the Sonys is top notch. Same can’t quite be said for the AirPods Pro (check out my latest vid!).
Mark Ellis Reviews Figures. Just my luck. I’m just glad I was able to take the black ones home as I really like the headphones!
Which airline do you fly which has bluetooth?
I had both xm3 and xm4. Sold my xm3s after realizing that it sounded muddy compared to the XM4. Never even look back since then and i was really surprise it has been a year listening to a muddy sound headphone and actually loving the sound quality . Even my ATH m50xBT studio headphone sounded better than the xm3 in terms of clarity but the XM4 has the best of both worlds.
An is really bad in xm4, don't you think? Sound is better in xm4 but my main interest is isolation from the environment
I just ordered xm4. I hope conference calls / phone calls are good.
Awesome. Enjoy!
@@MarkEllisReviews I meant xm4 (black). I am only worried about microphone performance during office calls. I do have jabra that I use now but theses are so much nicer and want to use these for conference calls. Maybe they will be good. Only time will tell.
@@mard192837 Aha! Don't worry about call quality - I reckon you'll be fine.
I recently lost my WH-1000XM3😢Today I bought a new WH-1000XM3. Yes, I know. XM5 isn't worth it in my opinion. They are much more expensive and much less compact. For me that's important as I travel often. Why not XM4. Not much difference compared to XM3. Battery and sound is ever so slightly less good and I don't have a need for multi point bluetooth. A nice touch is the sensor which automatically stops playing your music if you take the headphones of. A pity that XM3 don't have it. Also, the mic on MX4 is worse than XM3. I really hope that Sony will revert back to their old design with their XM6 and later... If XM5 would've been the same design, I would've bought it for sure
Awesome review Mark, I like your personality. The XM3 are really good in all aspects, and the XM4 are like the Pro -version. Honestly I just love this Headphones, they are better than Bose or Beats Studio combine together. Thanks for your review. Can't wait for my XM4 to arrive cheers.

how is the comfort with xm3 compare to the bose QC 35? are the cushions on the xm3 good?
Hey, Carmine - thanks for commenting. I haven’t used the QC35s for a while, but the XM3 and XM4 cushions are superb - you barely know you’re wearing them.

Were you able to test call quality?
I’m afraid not. I’ve never used the XM3s for voice calls, and don’t intend to use the XM4s for them either. I personally don’t think over the ear headphones like these are best suited to voice calls - I always switch to my AirPods for that task. Other reviews do talk highly of the XM4s capabilities in this area, though.
i’m watching this on xm4
Hi any lag on either when connected to a tv via Bluetooth please?
While playing games you will notice minor (very minimal) lag, playing CZcams, movies its no lag
Are Bose 700 more expensive in UK vs XM 4?
They're a little bit cheaper than the XM4s at the moment, although pricing is all over the shop currently with lingering Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals!
Kinda important: XM4 uses Bluetooth 5, while XM3 uses 4.2, and the issue here is that Bluetooth 4.2 are not forward-compatible with Bluetooth 5, but Bluetooth 5 are backwards-compatible with 4.2. So, getting XM3 is kinda introducing the risk of one day buying a Bluetooth 5 device and realizing your headphones can't connect to it anymore.
Bluetooth 5 headphones can connect to Bluetooth 4.2 and all other versions of bluetooth. You simply don't get the added benefits such as lower power usage and bigger range.
Now they come in a limited edition white
Look nice, too.
I have the silver XM3s and they’re great except for the constant creaking. Makes them feel like a cheaply made product. Very disappointing.
I haven't really experienced this. There's a bit of a creak occasionally, but only if I attempt to make them creak...
You are an iPhone user aren’t you? Can you enable multipoint pairing in the Sony app? I can’t on mine. I met two other persons on reddit that have the same problem like me.
I have them on 2.0.6. so it should work. I cannot enable it though on iPhone. The switch in the app keeps switching off if I try to turn it on. Is that the same for you on your iPhone?
I then asked an Android user if he could install the app and pair to my headphones. He did and in his app he could enable that feature.

Hey. I do indeed have an iPhone. I’ve just switched it on... and it works. If you haven’t already, I’d try a re-install. Frustrating though, eh? Report back!
Mark Ellis Reviews thanks for testing! I tried everything I think. I factory resetted the headphones and reinstalled the app several times. I also used an iPad and configured to English. It all did not help. I am out of ideas.
You are proof that it is not an iOS problem per se.
The other guys on Reddit with the problem are German as well. So strange and annoying.
Try contacting Sony - might be a known issue. If it’s any consolation, though, the feature is a bit clunky...
@@MarkEllisReviews Yes, thanks. I have already contacted their support via their contact form. I am still waiting for a proper response.
A co worker with an android phone let me install the Sony App on his phone and pair to my headphones. There it was possible to enable the feature. It worked somehow on my phone and Mac then. But you are right, it was very clunky and unreliable (compared to my expectations:-)). I then tried to disable the switch/Feature on my iPhone then. Funny enough, now this was not possible anymore. The button always jumps back to "on".
So I factory resetted the headset again. Then I turned my phone to English, Region UK. I downloaded the app again. And tried again to enable the feature - it keeps NOT working.
I really wonder if I got an bad headphone.
If I could give a tip for the future do a noise cancelling test yourself instead of telling people to go view another youtubers test. Otherwise there was no point in watching you if we can watch the whole review somewhere else if that make sense. Good review otherwise.
Appreciate the feedback, Ben, and thanks for watching. I’ll keep that in mind, but the narrative throughout this review is that the difference between both sets is very negligible unless you A/B test (which just isn’t a real world use case). I’m a big believer in reviewers complementing each other - I think it’s near impossible to do a full review 😃 Thank you though - means a lot that you’ve reached out.

What is the call quality compared to the m3s, I had the m3s and the call quality was very bad actually :))
I’m afraid I didn’t test the call quality on these. I’m not sure why, but I’ve just never seen over the ear headphones like these as decent calling headsets. Which might be shortsighted - I appreciate! I think the general consensus, however, is that they’re an improvement in that area though 😉
@@MarkEllisReviews Thank you so much for the fast reply Sir.
Was looking at Bose 700 and xm4
I guess I will go fir the xm4 since I gifted the xm3 to mu gf (reason to get the xm4)
