2009 Yamaha FZ6 Ride and Review

  • Riding and reviewing my 2009 Yamaha FZ6-S2. I've owned the bike for 3 full riding seasons now and put nearly 48,000 km on it so far. I love the versatility and ability to hit multiple types of riding. Stock suspension needs work and the fueling is quite choppy when your on and off the throttle high in the rev range.
    Most of my mods are for comfort and touring; hyperlites and HVMP bar ends are the main name brand farkles, everything else is an ebay special or crafted by me in some way.

    I had a cobalt blue 2009 Yamaha FZ6.I put on a tall dark smoked Puig racing screen.I had Pazzo clutch and brake levers.And the rest of the bike was stock.I bought it brand new in August 2010.I was my favorite motorcycle.I went everywhere on it.Though my Father got ill and passed away Oct. of 2013.I had to sell my bike to make financial ends meet.It only had 5,200 plus miles on it.I miss that bike alot as I have OCD and going to the beach calmed me down.I'm saving up to buy another motorcycle.It's been a little over 3 years without my FZ6.I miss riding and my riding friends.

    i own a 2007. its a great city and very good highway bike. it will keep up with any 600cc on the road up to 120-130mph, even if from a bit behind in some cases. but top speed is essentially 140mph. some here on youtube show it topping out faster, but who knows? i do disagree with the "buzzy" assessment at high rpm which the rider here states. i find the bike's engine very smooth and not much buzzy at all. the bike itself always feels virtually vibration free. i love mine. like this owner i will own this bike pretty much forever

    Imagine how much more you would like your bike if your backroads had a decent road surface! Geeze, that's horrible! I have owned my 2006 FZ6S since new. 27,000 miles on the clock now, would be much higher but I had a touring cruiser as well for 5 years of this time. Kept the FZ6 because it's the best little bike ever.

    Nice video, I own a Black 2008 FZ6, my 1st fuel injected bike, bought for $3300 in Sept 2014 with 5200 miles on it, in the 1st year I put 9,000 miles on it. I like the upright riding style, easy on my back, it's got more than enough power for me, I'm 44.
    It does everything I need it to do & I am always smiling when out riding. I plan on keeping it for the long haul, with proper upkeep & maintenance I don't expect any serious issues. I run Bridgestone S20 Evo tires and they stick like glue in the twisty's, I don't ride in the rain, I ride mostly for fun & commute on nice days only.

      +twk0500 sounds like you got a great deal! It's definitely a bike in it for the long haul, I do regular maintenance on the tires, chain, oil, brake fluid, and coolant, however other than that its largely untouched. I ended this season with over 68,000 km on it (~43,000 miles) and it shows no sign of giving up anytime soon.

      +Evans-RideReviewReport what are the common problems with these bikes? do they have the second gear issue and what generation r6 motor is this?

    • @evans-ridereviewreport7285
      @evans-ridereviewreport7285  Před 8 lety +1

      Common problems I've heard of on the forum I'm on include the kill switch malfunctioning and cam chain tensioner failing. But mine has had zero issues, I just checked and adjusted my valves (~65,000 km) and my cam chain tensioner was perfectly fine. They are really a bullet proof engine and tranny, and regular maintenance and inspections keep everything else in check. I'm not entirely sure what generation of R6 engine it shares, its got a different cam and fueling profile, so it makes ~98 hp as compared to the R6's ~115 hp

    @Scott64a Před 6 lety +3

    I loved my 2008 FZ6.
    Fast, lots of torque and sitting more upright was easier on my back than a traditional street bike. It is the best of both worlds, really. You get an R1 engine, and bigger sprocket and don't have to lay on the tank to ride it.
    If you need to tuck in for a turn, you can, and if you just want to relax and ride you can do that, too.
    The only thing I wish I had done differently was get an FZ1!!!
    You quickly outgrow the power of the FZ6 if you're used to pushing yourself on bikes, and the 1000cc engine has much more to spare.

    • @JLUDE01
      @JLUDE01 Před 5 lety +9

      If you outgrow the power of the FZ6 engine on public roads then you must just be drag racing because nearly 100 hp in a 430lb bike is more power than you can use riding curvy roads without full race suspension. The benefit of pushing a 600 is with less torque than a liter bike you are less likely to loose the rear end under power.

    500 mile a day, you're a hero on one of these! I find my fz6 too physically small (I'm 6'1") and too buzzy, 85mph is 7,000rpm. Gonna need a gel seat and bigger front sprock. BTW, I've bought one since I asked my 1st question and disagree on mpg . Mine does around 54 UK mpg.

  • @joedanero5360

    5w maxima fork oil then 10w. If that doesn't solve your dip then try aftermarket springs. I switched to 5w Maxima oil and that was enough to equalize the rates. Fork oil should be replaced after time and/or use. It isn't good forever.
    FZ-07 clutch slave lever has an extra half inch of length and bolts right on. This is a cheap and easy mod to increase the friction zone. It won't be as nice as what Kawasaki grants, but it's a slight and noticeable improvement over stock.
    You're bike getting sketchy over 130mph could be a number of things. I'd check the steering bearings first. The lower bearing is infamous for rotting out because of the lower cover retaining moisture. While you're there the steering bearing compression, clamped fork lengths, and rear wheel alignment are other things to look at. Also check you're rear swing arm bushings. I had them go bad on another bike which was giving me funky feedback at speed and it took me forever to figure out. When they're bad you can align the rear wheel as many times as your heart desires, but things will always be sketch at speed as the alignment will change with every little bump in the road and the front will track accordingly. A nice thing about these bikes is that they have a center stand and they're still lighter than the FZ6R 🤣

    I watched your review with great interest. For some unknown reason this bike interests me a lot, and I am more a Dual Sport / Adventure bike kind of guy. ( and large touring scooters, lol ) One of these has come up for sale close to me and I was seeing what all I could find out about them. My main interest is if the suspension was as stiff ( harsh ) as was on the 2015 Ninja 650 I rode, or if it had a more compliant softer ride better for long hours of touring. Great vid, btw. I enjoyed it. Very thorough.

    • @evans-ridereviewreport7285
      @evans-ridereviewreport7285  Před 8 lety

      Thanks! I would say the suspension is on the soft side, the rear can be adjusted only for preload, and the front is stuck as it is, a common mod is for people to either switch to R6 forks or to up the oil weight. I actually just bought a 2015 F800GSA so the FZ6 is up for sale, I wanted to do more offroading and distance touring but I would keep the FZ6 for sporty day trips if I could afford to insure them both.

    Mine is the 2009 version with ABS, bought it new in 2014. Pretty good motorcycle, only drawback is being ugly when you put top case.When you it the fuel reserve the odometer also says how many kilometers you made on reserve, and you can get it to show the air intake temperature.

      +bklynzman Ask when the valves were last adjusted, thats a pretty big job (I just did it) and costs a lot at a shop. You should be able to tell if its been well taken care of based on its general cleanliness, condition of the chain, look for saw toothing on the sprockets etc. They are pretty bullet proof so unless someones really done a lot of hard launches and rode hard then put away wet you should be okay. Shoot me an email if you've got any other questions! evanb@kos.net

    Nice bike dude I own a 2008 and do agree with all u say ´bout "her". Regarding the front suspension subject, I+ve sorted its easy dumping with SUSPENSION OIL DENSITY (Took a mechanic advice), ur probably using a 10W. Try a 15W or 1/2 20W 1/2 10W or even a full 20W.
    With a nice Air Filter (like BMC or K&N), iridium sparks and proper High Octane (98) FUEL it will improve a bit the overall performance.
    About the the front wheel wobbleing, try a handlebar stabilizer(Steering damper) those easy 2 set non hydrolic where u can set the "stiffness".
    Many good and fun kms ahead 4 u, best regards from Portugal.

    • @hymertramp6063
      @hymertramp6063 Před rokem

      About the front wheel wobble, by now I hope that has been fixed, but the information may be useful to others.
      I have the impression that your front tire is mounted backwards; usually the treads of the tire should start from the middle of the tread and spread out with the rolling of the tire, seen from underneath, it makes a < if the advance is to the right. so seen from above, it's the other way around, it makes a > or an arrow towards the front.
      Often, on the sidewall of the tire, an arrow indicates the mounting direction to confirm.
      Look at 16:03 and 16:20, for water evacuation, the treads should be in the same direction, the rear is good, the front is backwards.
      Your tire fitter must have been drunk.
      Hi from France

      I have a video riding a FZ-07, I find its a budget bike for sure in terms of equipment used and options, fun and maneuverable to ride around but lacks the power I have on the FZ6. The lack of fairing and windsheild also makes speeds greater than 180 km/h tough to maintain (not that that should really be an issue...) and it gets a lot colder on the FZ-07 when riding into the winter months. It a great starter bike though with a relatively low seat height, skinny feel and lower weight

    I have recently bought one of these, an S2, and I am finding the handlebar vibration a bit of a pain, especially on longer rides.
    How much of a difference did the HVMP bar end make?
    I live in the UK and importing them would be expensive, so I only want to do it if they are worth while. Cant find anyone in the UK that makes heavier ones, only light ones.Also just to check fitment compatibility, were your originals single piece threaded weights that screwed straight into the bar?

    • @evans-ridereviewreport7285
      @evans-ridereviewreport7285  Před 8 lety

      +MrDaveH4 They were single piece threaded, I had a weld break on the thread inserts and lost one bar end on the highway, HVMP sent me a new pair of the expanding ones that you normally see, great company and great service. I honestly cant remember what it felt like before I had them, I ride all day with no pain though, grip puppies would also help, and if its not just vibration pain then switching to the FZ1 bar has a better wrist angle. On another note, addressing the vibrations would include a throttle body sync, and checking the spark plug caps (search the FZ6 forum for info on this)

    • @MrDaveH4
      @MrDaveH4 Před 8 lety

      +Evans-RideReviewReport Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated!!The bar position is not an issue for me as this is the first bike I have owned without clip-on's. Odd thing is for that very reason I nearly never bought it, but so glad I did now. The only negative thing I can say about it is there is next to zero under seat storage, especially in compared to the absolute cavern under the seat of my SV650S K2.

      @evans-ridereviewreport7285  Před 5 lety +1

      The fuel mileage won't be as good as your CB500, but my average I think on the FZ6 was 5.3 L/100 km ( 44 MPG), obviously went down when I was riding fast, but certainly better than any other vehicle I own. My current bike, a 800GSA gets an average of 47 MPG. Suspension was fine for my purposes, I test rode a CB500R and didn't notice any difference beyond less power.
