    It’s a great platform. If they ever find a way to make it available to the masses, it would be ideal. I can’t remember if you equated 12TB to title count, but I reckon one could rotate titles in and out to keep the catalog fresh. Thanks for the video. You present the information well.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před rokem

      The cost of storage is one of the biggest pains of the K system. They charge much more for storage than any individual drive costs. Kaleidescape encodes and packages the movies in their own format specific for their hardware. That’s internal information, so we don’t know how exactly they package it or what the file type is.

      @@TechthusiasmIf they could lower that price and the price of the system the movie prices are not horrible. But really I don’t think overall people would be able to tell if a movie was playing on K v. Apple TV I just don’t think they can do that much difference. I like the K platform much butter then Apple but the price just makes is unreadable. I just buy the DVDs and burn the disks use Plex. That way. They can never take it away from you. .

    A great idea for downloading would be SMS notification of what movies have finished downloading a movie or a select list of movies and let's you know so each movie downloaded is finished.
    Another feature to build into the networking section would be P2P torrent downloading.. not able to download torrent files but if other users have the movie, you can allocate upto Xxxx amount of users to assist with downloading, similar to torrent to speed up downloads.

    Great video Jaremy! Not being able to see you WHOLE purchase library is a fatal flaw to me. How much space would just having the cover actual take? Someone like you or me that owns thousands of movies would want to see all of them. When you are looking for a movie to watch just showing me what is currently downloaded isn’t really helping me. They are basically forcing me to remember my whole 1800+ collection unless I heard you wrong.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před 2 lety +1

      You can access your entire library online or in the store where you can choose to download. The library view on device is currently designed to just show available downloads.
      I think that choice reflects a now failed idea that you would have enough storage to always hold all your movies, and you add more storage as you buy more movies. If the storage was reasonably priced then I might do that. But I don’t and I think a lot of folks in the platform don’t as well today.

    • @pgreen0001
      @pgreen0001 Před 2 lety

      @@Techthusiasm I agree. But a simple software update would add at the most a few hundred megabits if that of your entire library and then if not on the actual player a download button. That would bring more power to the wall. I would want to see ALL the movies I had purchased regardless if they are downloaded or not. And they could always add a filter to only show you downloaded content if that’s your preference. For example I might want to watch Master and Commander Far Side of the World if it popped up as owned even though it’s not currently downloaded but owned.

    Jaremy, I'd love to see a review of remotes, forgive me if I've missed it if you have already covered it. Specifically I'm interested in the Kaleidescape remote. After using the Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 remote, it is my high bar as I love the remote but still hate the stability of the Shield itself. The Shield remote excels at backlight, simple use and feel, and is RF. For how much one spends on the Kaleidescape, they should be embarrassed by using such a dated remote, even if it is one of the best remotes of its time. When I look at the remote it reminds me of my MythTV, and XBMC days, but would give me the feeling of spending $1000 for a $2 hammer.
    Would love to hear your input and thoughts on this.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před rokem

      K doesn't even include a remote in the box any more. The prior remote is still available as a direct add-on purchase, but it's not really very good. There's an assumption on their part (for right or wrong) that customer won't use a packaged remote. They assume the devices are in a rack or room somewhere out of sight and out of mind. They have a really nice mobile app with great device control and integrate really well with advanced systems, like Control4. I should be talking a lot K on a live stream coming up (probably 12/21), FYI.

      @@Techthusiasm Thats great feedback, thanks a ton. That is my setup (a rack in another separate room), and I run everything via a custom remote, currently Home Assistant on an iPad. As long as they have a good open APIs to integrate solutions with, and aren't a closed system to expensive integrtions like Control4, Crestron, my concerns and questions about the remote are moot.
      Thanks again for the great feedback!

      Considerable system for sure and, yeah, we share some gear. Nice! This a hard one. Maybe I'll make a video on it. You surely have a cost level and quality level of system that can justify the additional cost of a K. And if you want the highest fidelity content, you either go physical or K. Physical is cheaper, but not as convenient or elegant. K is big $$$ of course but so nice to use.
      I have been heavily debating, especially of late, my expenditures for K and my hefty gaming PC vs. the alternative of just accepting iTunes/Apple TV and consoles. My cost and system complexity would go down considerably to do this. I already have big content and gaming libraries on those other platforms. I'm really drawn to this. Console gaming should only get better and Apple quality should only get better. There's already rumors today of another Apple TV model coming this year.
      If cost is really no object, then hey why not, toss a K in there along side the Apple TV and pick and choose what movies in your theater you want maximum quality for and enjoy. If not though, nothing wrong IMO to just sticking to that Apple TV and calling it a day. You already have your library there. I'm really affected by paradox of choice though and want to eliminate choices and replicate things from my life.

      @@Techthusiasm I was trying to find an answer to this, but the KScape people at CEDIA were kind of cagey. That leads me to believe that at some point in time, files will randomly start looking for license keys and with no server access to get them, they will stop playing over a period of time (the average life of a key before renewal is an unknown at this time). There is heavy DRM after all and it is a closed system. The studios wouldn't continue giving them business if there wasn't some sort of end of life kill code.

There seems to be this elitist attitude towards this since apparently this is only for rich people. But that is a very ignorant perspective since the true cinephile will invest some money into systems like these if they make sense. And sorry to say, this doesn't make any sense. Other than convenience there are no real benefits over using physical media. I don't want a 12TB drive which eventually will fail. A 4K UHD Blu-ray disc or a normal Blu-ray disc will last longer than this hard drive. The fact that the films are tied to the system and can't be transferred is ridiculous. A NAS KODI or PLEX solution at least has the option for the hard drives to be replaced when they become faulty.

    I'm rather surprised that Kaleidescape doesn't have a way to show all your Movies at once. If Free Plex can do it I'm sure K is also capable. I'm nitpicking but is there a way to manually tag a Movie as "Watched" that K hasn't automatically tagged? Would still Love to have it but,as I've said before,that price is Crazy Expensive!!🤑👨🏾‍🦲

      Room for improvement and new features in the UI for sure.
