    You would think they make the most money off of the movie sales and would wanna get the product into as many homes as possible, but that must not be the case because their hardware is seriously marked up for what the product is at its core. I dunno if I was them i would be worried about another company eventually coming along and taking over the market they started.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 6 měsíci +2

      My understanding is they make very little off of the movies. The studios make all the money from those sales.
      I’m all for competition as it pushes companies to be innovative, to make better products and to make them more affordable.
      Kaleidescape has been in business since 2001, and there has yet to be a single company that has been willing to jump into this space.

    • @Antimonkat
      @Antimonkat Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah there should be some markup, just like in retail, but they wouldn't make a huge margin even still, the studios aren't going to give a discount to protect disc sales (makes you wonder how streaming manages to be profitable, sheer scale I guess) but there are also significant costs in mastering the movies from the cine files to a distributable, and the bandwidth needed for distribution. Licensing costs is still most of it though, the studios are getting in their own way ultimately. All that said, I still think for what it is, the equipment cost is their biggest liability and it's all just marked up for their own reasons. Maybe that's what they need to do to be profitable now, but if they could sell more for less and make the same, or more money, it would be better for everyone. But then too, if it costs a lot, it looks nicer for the premier clients installing these in their 100K plus theaters. But you know, a lot of people, myself included give Kaleidescape a lot of grief over their pricing, and yet somehow, MadVR is largely left alone. Why is that? Is the perceived value somehow better? Or do we inherently think their hardware is more expensive baseline? Maybe because it just doesn't have anything to compare against. Some of the fault of their cost lies with Nvidia, and they do have a lot of custom software, which isn't cheap, especially for a small team and small install base, but I think really they shouldn't be as off the hook for their pricing. It also is a premium product marked up beyond what the mass home theature community (as small as that already is) will be willing to pay for what could be a marginally improved experience for most. I get it, it's magic for some if you have screen masking and an anamorphic system etc, but on the average viewing experience with mid tier screens and projectors, does it extract that much more from your image? Probably not? Full disclaimer, I've never seen a side by side so.... Is that something Mwave could/is doing? That would be fun, same source, with, without madvr out.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 6 měsíci +2

      We actually did just that at MWAVE 2022. I was busy handling logistics during the event so I only was able to see. Small part of the projector comparison.
      Kscape and madVR both get plenty of heat regarding price. People claim they can build one themselves for cheaper but the reality is they can’t. These are both relatively small companies. I do not know their cost of overhead, R&D, marketing, salaries etc. But there’s plenty of room for other companies to come along and make a competitive product at a cheaper cost but we haven’t seen that happen so I’m guessing it’s much more difficult to do than one might think.

    • @brianaustin8136
      @brianaustin8136 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@Antimonkat I think mad vr doesn't catch as much grief because the amount of ppl that would benefit from mad vr is very small where K scape could be used by anyone looking for the best image quality on their screen or TV.

I'm pretty done with physical media for a number of reasons, and I'd probably go for the kscape if the hardware was priced "fairly" by my estimation, and that value proposition is different for everyone for sure. Basically its for the convenience of being able to pull up a movie list and hit play, you get movies much earlier than disc release, and sometimes you get a less compressed version of the movie. Does it look or sound better than the disc? Potentially slightly better on giant movies like avatar 2 which have a ~150GB plus file which can't fit all on 1 4k disc. Scripts are fun for showing demos and it has some integration with smart home systems like crestron, lutron, etc. The only people getting kaleidescape are likely spending 75k+ on their theater so if that's not you I would stick to something like a Panasonic 820 and 4k discs for the time being

    Here’s my biggest issue with kaleidoscape, even though the hardware is very well-made and things like that. The company itself is still at the behest of the studio that owns that content, whether it’s a movie or TV show.
    This can be problematic (specifically with movies) if studios won’t offer certain cuts of certain films(Star Wars, original trilogy, Blade Runner, 1981, alien four film collection) things like this.
    This is always been my biggest bugbear aside from the obvious being cost.

    I saw an in-person demo of this locally last week. I knew these were pricey but had no idea how much. For the ultimate system, money no object, hands down the right option. For the everyday guy, probably not. It would be interesting to see if AVR manufacturers could integrate this into their units or at least an add on for a lower price. I think if you could get a descent system, sub $3k area, you might have a larger audience. For now, maybe I'll stay on the PLEX path and see how it goes.

Also, I can't change the default download from UHD to HDR - I have to cancel or delete the UHD version and re-download the HDR (because no display connected). Also, it’d be really cool if they added Atmos music albums for purchase.
    Put those together and this becomes much more of a one stop shop. As it is, I’d still have to jump in and out of the system too much to currently merit the purchase. It’s a very well thought out system though. 👍🏻🙂

    I don't think I would ever trust a digital store that doesn't let me save and playback on any device that I want. If it's locked to the vendor's system, you don't actually own the movie you "bought". It's only been a couple of months since the playstation debacle.
    Say that Discovery stops their licensing agreement with Kaleidascape like they did with Sony. They'll probably have to remove all the discovery content that you bought, whether you have it stored locally or not. Just like Sony had to do.
    And that's aside from having to pay 4x what I paid for my car for the privilege of accessing their "store".

    • @akhkharu2305
      @akhkharu2305 Před 5 měsíci

      lol exactly... to pay this much of a premium for the opportunity to pay for movies a second time that you already own physical media of is a real head scratcher for me. i get that it's not just for physical media you own and that they also offer movies for "purchase" which download to the device...but to pay this much for what is essentially a few hard drives and some kinda hardware to play the files is pretty crazy. i was expecting the price to be high...but it was pretty shocking, even with my expectations of it being high. i'm all for paying a premium for things if they warrant the price..but this is pretty far beyond the pale. you can legally rip a physical disk you own onto a hard drive for playback on any number of software platforms that are very similar to this devices GUI. so the fact that they charge for the "privilege" to do this is just insane to me. add on that the entire system is locked down as you state...and ultimately under their control...yeah...nope.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 5 měsíci

      The lock down is the only way they can get agreements with the studios. If it can be hacked, copied and distributed by owners, the studios would shut it down immediately.
      As I have stated, Kaleidescape is a luxury item. Plain and simple. I know plenty of owners who absolutely love theirs and cannot see themselves ever going back to Plex. If Plex, physical media or even streaming works for you, that’s all that matters.

    • @donkeychote

    My only reservation, besides not having nearly enough disposable income (and re-buying all my 4K UHD movies again) is hoping Kaleidescape will always be around. That's a lot of money for a service that could someday go away, and along with it, all 'your' movies.

      Kscape is just as good as a 4K disk and sometimes better due to not having a limited amount of available space on a 4K disk. I have not done any side-by-side blind test comparisons to see if you can tell a difference between the two but my guess is you would not.
      Keep in mind, kaleidoscope is not a streaming platform. You were physically downloading the entire file onto your Kaleidescape server and playing across your network.

      @@Youthman I have to believe that the reason is they don’t want to make it easier for you to live with the base storage. With the faster download speeds now you could theoretically build your collection without worrying about space. Keep the new stuff and your favorites downloaded and everything else is 10 minutes away from watching. But since you can’t catalogue non-downloaded purchases it becomes more of an inconvenience. It’s a simple enough option to add but they make their nut on selling hardware so I believe they don’t want people doing it this way. If the hardware wasn’t so expensive I don’t think it would bother me so much.
      Personally, I made the call to use mine differently than most. I only use it for new movies that I want to watch right away in a high bite rate format. Everything else I stream or wait for the blu-ray and rip it to my local storage. I had to buy used to make this plan make sense since it really lowers the value proposition. If I you were able to catalogue everything like I described then I probably would have bought new with an eye towards making K my main source. Overall, I think the system is super cool though. Just be nice to see them update the interface and add new features from time to time.

      Kscape would need to answer the question regarding their servers.
      If a hard drive fails, you would need to contact Kscape support for a replacement. You can’t just replace the drive with any hard drive.
      The reason, for this is due to the license agreements with the studios. If they did not have that in place, someone could remove the hard drive, duplicate it, and either give it to their friends, or even worse, sell it for profit.

As for the Apple TV ....Apple does have a feature that will play local content on your Apple TV. It's called Home Sharing and it absolutely sucks. Funny that DRM stands for Digital "Rights" Management. We have spent over two decades closing the analog hole and putting HDCP in every connection and customer still don't have enough viable choices between streaming and local content playback. CDN (Content Distribution Networks) contribute to Carbon Emissions. While this is debated the reality is Datacenters primarily run on dirty power which is Ironic because companies will profess to care about the environment while firing up that coal to run their CDN at the same time. Kscape is the present and future. The future being movies that run on local Solid State storage with specialized ASICS that decode 8K video in just a few watts per hour.

    😂 this is dumb... I watch 15 movies a day for free a year ( websites) or pay $600 a year in 4k dolby vision streaming services..😂😂😂 if someone bought this they would be spending $100k a year in just trying to watch the same movies as me 💯 im walking away with a WIN 😎

      Yes, I’m still trying to get over the cold I got when we went on our trip to Utah snowboarding. Voice is much better, but still struggling.
      I’m prepared for the comments.
      I’ll just send them to the recent videos of the HSU sub, the SUPER budget friendly Home Theater Tour I posted a month or two ago, Edifier headphones, Hisense TV, Definitive Technologies speakers and many others 🤣
      Oh and Outlaw Audio just reached out to me yesterday. I have a call with them next week.
      My personal Home Theater has definitely upgraded over the past 17 years. By me myself, I’m still the same guy that celebrates all home theaters, regardless of shape, size, brand or budget. 😉

    Man I just KNEW these comments would be so degenerate.
    Not sure why Kaleidescape's biggest feature is making adults so insecure about their incomes they turn into internet goblins lol.

      Honestly, the vast majority of the comments are very positive, which surprised me. But you’re correct, often times people are negative towards things that are above their budget

      @@Youthman In my experience, it truly seems to be unique to Kaleidscape. The entry level Kscape option is not too far off of you had to spend to get the rest of your speakers on JTR. Or close to the 5.2 Arendal setup you looked at. Yet those videos don't have as much negativity. Just very interesting to me.
      Love the video! Kscape is also well out of my budget but I have learned to stop saying I could never afford it. Because I felt the same way about the system I have right now before I ever had it, and yet I made it work...

      Any product I review typically has an affiliate link through Amazon, Audio Advice or sometimes the company has their own affiliate program. I always disclose when a link is an affiliate (required by law and it’s a matter of integrity).
      You likely get a weekly paycheck. My paycheck comes in the form of Adsense (the ads that play during a video), affiliate sales or sponsored videos (which are also disclosed).
      I’ve reviewed products that are great and several that are super buggy and I share the good and the bad and let the consumer decide if it’s a good fit for their needs and budget.

      Point is your reviewing items you selling can't never trust that
      I also have a Kaladascape 22tb system and it's a money pit non stop buying movies and new servers every , 2 years or so ,had that been said I would believe the reviews more
      And it's definitely not worth the cost it was a gift to me that I would trade for a Plex

      Keleidescape is definitely a luxury product. But there are many of my subscribers that own Kaleidescape that are not rich. We all spend money, some just choose to allocate theirs to allow them to purchase Kaleidescape.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 5 měsíci

      Expensive, yes. Overpriced, that’s subjective. If you or someone else can build a similar platform for less, I’m all for it. The reality is Kaleidescape has been in business since 2001 and there hasn’t been one single company to do what they have done.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Complete opposite. This is the definition of a Youthman Deal. 🤣
      In all seriousness, I still encourage my audience to look for Youthman Deals. This can be in the form of open box, discontinued products, but the best place to find Youthman Deals is the used market. Let someone else take the “hit”. That goes for anything in life (cars, homes, boats, electronics, speakers etc).
