Amber, it makes me so happy that you get Tom Petty. There are all kinds of songs. Tom’s have depth. They fill your emotions and your soul. He sings a lot of truth. And his songs are the kind that can stick with you for life. ❤
She gets all of them
He was special❤
She needs to hear American Girl! ❤
I identify with Amber in a lot of ways, and Tom Petty was my first musical love, so it delights me that she gets him on such a deep level 🥰🎶
Growing up in the 70's and 80's, Tom Petty provided the soundtrack to my childhood. I just love all his stuff, including the Wilburys! The latter day Petty stuff (like Wildflowers) has such a Zen quality to it, and I just love it!
“You got lucky” and “Refugee” are iconic Tom Petty songs.
And Tom was Lucky.
"Face in the Crowd" is pretty killer too
Video for You Got Lucky is so cool!
Two of my ATFs!
"Dont Do Me Like That" is my jam!
How can anyone not like Tom Petty. An American treasure.
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That" "American Girl" and "Refugee"!!!
All great song suggestions ✌️
Refugee! The first song I remember ever hearing by him. Man that was ages ago, but what a great time to be alive. I really miss those days, but would I go back? No. I was young, deeply involved in drugs and alcohol and I never want to go back down into that psychological hell hole
You can go on and on
Running Down a Dream, You Got Lucky,Yer So Bad,
Wildflowers is one of my favorites
He had such a great sound! So talented! RIP Mr. Petty! 🤘🔥
Their live shows were amazing!!!
Petty is deeply missed....
Such a storyteller, such swagger on stage....
Was soooo lucky to see him in Pittsburgh in 2000ish ❤
And always so gracious. Thanking the crowd for being there the whole time.
Absolutely agree!
The 2006 live version of this song at Bonnaroo is instant tears for me, every time. One of the greatest live bands ever.
I’m only 19, but man oh man. Wish I was a teen in the 80s, everything was cooler 😂
I’m sorry to tell you…
Yes, it absolutely was!
I was in grade school during the 80's and yes. Life was infinitely better back then.
The 80s rocked!
Don't let anybody tell you any different.🤟😂
@@Guildofarcanelore Oh, my, it certainly was!
The songs were good, but honestly, it was still really hard
“One of the Heartbreakers” is Mike Campbell, a top notch guitarist and songwriter in his own right.
Jeff Lynne from ELO & The Traveling Wilburys Co wrote this song with Tom Petty, & for me it definitely has a Traveling Wilburys feel, what a great song
“Mary Jane’s last dance” is my favorite song from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but i still love this one also
He's truly left a gap in the music industry - nobody else comes close to his style and swagger! This one gives me goosebumps every time!
Have you guys listened to Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs? He co-wrote, sang and played with Tom Petty for 40 years. I saw him open for the Who orchestral tour last year. Well worth the listen and it brings the heart and soul of the Heartbreakers back.
I honestly caught myself openly weeping the day Tom Petty died. Seeing him live was a bucketlist item for me that sadly will remain unfulfilled. Love you Tom, and love you J and Amber. Thank you for making this Old Mans Heart full everyday.
I feel you. I wish I'd seen also.
Same here
Yup, same here. Hearing of his death totally floored me. Only three deaths have reduced me to tears, John Lennon, David Bowie and Tom Petty.
There was no "normal " Tom Petty. Our boy could do it all ❤
I saw Tom Petty in concert in about 2004 or so. It was a perfect concert. The sound was perfect. And he was so cool. One of the est concerts ever.
This song was co-written and produced by Jeff Lynne of ELO, as his recognizable guitar strumming style and background vocals are heard.
Absolutely “You Got Lucky”!!! One of his greatest.
Still can't believe he's gone !!! Thanks for the music Tom. 😇😇😇😇
The fact that you guys didn't pause until the song was almost over told me how into the song you were. I love this song and miss Mr Petty every day. Great reaction👍
Welllll... that may be the case for Amber, but J was just completely uninterested.
Truth be told, music purists wish you would let the song play all the way thru, then comment. Uncle LeeB. will NEVER steer you wrong!
@@leeb.9905 Unfortunately, due to copywrite rules or whatever, they have to pause it at least once or it'll be taken down.
I effin love this song, and I effing love Tom Petty. One of my all-time favorites since I was just a very little kid. I'm 39 now. What an amazing songwriter! There will never be another Tom Petty. Just hit after hit for decades
Don't Do Me Like That by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, that's the one you need to hear next!
Also, Jay - this is one of those albums, that is meant to be played from start to finish. “Learning To Fly” may have seemed a little soft to you, on the first listen - but once you start to hear it as the opening song, of a string of masterpieces; you’ll look at it differently. Once upon a time, in a land far away; we would listen to entire albums. Once you do that, you can’t imagine it any other way! 😎❤️🎸
Yes, definitely a different experience I don't think many people have today. Wouldn't exactly be good for reactions, though. Maybe once in a while. For special albums like this one.
I still catch myself starting what would be the next song on the album in my head from time to time on certain songs…
For rocking Tom Petty, listen to Even The Losers and Don't Do Me Like That.
Still hoping they do my favorite Tom Petty song "Don't Do Me Like That"
Great song... Co-writer and producer Jeff Lynne's influence is all over it, too.
I saw him live. He's was such a great talent and performer. One of my faves
Heck yeah, it does! A great thing!
Tom is one of those artists you can put on in the car and just drive. Your stress level will drop and you’ll find yourself singing along. ❤
Great coming of age song from Tom and the boys! That whole LP (Into The Great Wide Open) is my favorite! Did you notice the bird whistle at the end. The bird had left the nest, learning to fly!🐦😎
“Jammin’ Me” and “The Waiting” are some other Tom Petty songs to check out. Also, there’s another song titled “Learning to Fly” that’s by Pink Floyd. You should give it a listen too!
Yes!!! Pink Floyd’s Learning to Fly is one of my all time faves!!
@@jomorales8446I love that song-it resonates deeply with me!
Good news!
czcams.com/video/eq14JAxOfK8/video.html&ab_channel=RobSquadReactions
(It's one of my favorites, too)
🙂 "Here Comes My Girl" - the most quintessential Tom Petty song. I can't imagine anyone else singing this song, and doing it justice.
Just keep bringing smiles to our faces y’all 😊 this song is amazing.
This and Wildflowers are my two favorite Petty songs, just classics with deeper meanings and messages.
Wildflowers is a great album!
You might notice the subtle rhythm influence of Jeff Lynne (ELO) on this song - they were long-time friends and collaborators, obviously on the Traveling Wilburys as well! I think Jeff may have produced this album, but think it's cool how much friends carry their signature sounds to each other when they are open to it. Thanks for reacting, as always!!
It has to be my favorite Tom Petty song. It resonates with me.❤
Same!
Tom Petty truly is one of those songwriters who could've just as easily been a poet. His songs are never overly complex or fancy, they are just simple and emotional. They always make me think and feel things.
I highly recommend checking out the live version of this song from Petty's final tour he did with Stevie Nicks. There is a live concert version of this where he's just vibing and ad libbing with the crowd for awhile, its truly beautiful.
I love Tom Petty! I miss him. RIP! ❤❤Amber you are so special at picking out the stories and sayings! Love your hippie spirit!❤❤
TPATH is my swing. Seen him 6 times in Canada. He is without question true rock n roll. The world lost a giant when he passed. Your music will live forever. ❤
To bring Jay back into the Tom Petty fold, the next reaction should be "Woman In Love." Haunting Petty songwriting and musicianship that both Jay and Amber will love.
All time fave
Tom Petty had a big hit with Woman In Love (It's Not Me) back in 1981. It's a great song that's different from his others (and it's my favorite.) I hope you'll give it a listen.
Love, love Tom Petty!! RIP 😢
Bob Dylan covered this wonderful song shortly after Petty died in tribute to him (having never played it live before). He did a great job, too.
Love me some Tom Petty. Great songwriting and distinct vocals. Try "Breakdown", "You Don't Know How It Feels", "You Got Lucky", "Crawling Back To You", "A Face In The Crowd", and "Melinda". No two songs sound alike. RIP TP💔
Tom understands is one of my favorite things I've ever heard. He did. And thank you for making me smile today ❤
Another great Tom Petty song is "A Women In Love (It's Not Me)! The official video is awesome too! Especially for 1981.
"Learning To Fly" was Tom Petty's 20th single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking @ #28 in 1991. Between 1977 to 2006, Petty charted a total of 26 singles on the Hot 100 but confoundingly only made the Top 10 TWICE: "Free Fallin'' (#7) & "Don't Do Me Like That" (#10). 15 singles total reached the Top 40.
Look at the rock listing. That’s where he shined.
Will always be my favorite Tom Petty song ever. And that little whistle he does at the end.
Thank you for saying that! I have loved the bird whistle since the first time I heard the song. I think it is a subtle touch that sometimes hides offstage from the greatness of the song.
Running down a Dream is another great song
Thank you Jay and Amber for bringing a little very needed love and sharing to me on a very sad day. My 91 year old mom is going to be going in the hospice and I can’t imagine my life without her 😢. Big hugs and love robsquad family. If your parents or one of them is still alive call them just to tell them you love them.
Amen, prayers to your mom
@@markcornish2519 thank you your prayers are very much appreciated
Bless you and your mother. I hope she’s not in any pain as she prepares for her journey.
Tom (and The Heartbreakers) nailed that Teen Angst emotion in song. Even as I advance in age, his music has always hearkened back to those awkward, anxious and somewhat rebellious times. Interestingly, Pink Floyd did a song with the same title and made a good Music Video for it in 1987. Maybe compare that one next.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne (E.L.O., Traveling Wilburys), Steve Windwood (Traffic, Blind Faith), Dhani Harrison (George's son) and the Purple One himself PRINCE. They cover George Harrison's (The Beatles) "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Prince's guitar solo is a masterpiece! Jay and Amber, you must listen to one. You got to give the people what they want!
Mike Campbell's slide solo is one of those I wish was so much longer. Great song, and produced by Jeff Lynne.
And co-written by Lynne!
In the late 70's I signed up on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fan site and they sent me a Tom Petty Heartbreaker necklace. I still have it and cherish it. I saw them live in the early 90's and it was one of the best concerts I had ever seen. I love their music so much. When "Even the Losers" came out, I ran out and bought a "freak jacket" and wanted to be Mrs. Petty. LOL! Their songs have been part of my world from the beginning. Thanks for the great reaction!! ❤👍
Such a beautiful song. It's definitely one of my favourites of Tom's. Top 5 no doubt about it.
This song was amazing at his live shows!! Every single person singing the chorus!! That's like thousands of people all at once! It just made you feel like you were a part of something so strong! I've seen Mr Petty about 7 times in concert!! Especially with this song, he was in such awe of the love that he was receiving from his fans. One of the shows he stopped singing and just listened to the crowd. I was close enough to the stage that I saw his reaction and it was true love and appreciation! He was the absolute best!
Love your reaction. What I love about Tom Petty’s lyrics is that his words are always vague enough for you to insert your own story and meaning.
Jay, you are vindicated! My wife of 39 years was a huge Tom Petty fan back in the day. I got her this album for her as a gift and it was her least favorite of his works. Oddly enough, I liked it. I think we all find different things in different artists. My wife was more the TP & HB's "Damn the Torpedoes" days and I liked the newer (relatively) stuff. You don't always have to listen to the same stuff, but it's nice if you listen together... but far more important that you listen to each other. Keep on listening!
I love Tom Petty, been listening to him since the late 70s
Tom was a local legend around his hometown Gainesville Fl in the 70s. He played all the local bars around the University of Florida with his original band Mudcrutch.
Oh Tom. So glad we got to listen to your music. People will be listening for decades to come. Hard to pick my favorite Tom Petty song, but this ranks high
Can never go wrong with Tom Petty.
When I listen to this song. I hear and feel the influence of his good friend and fellow band mate from the Traveling Wilburys Bob Dylan
Ironically Pink Floyd and the FooFighters also had hits named Learning to Fly. That would have been a great trio one day.
Definitely my favorite Tom Petty song. Used to play it on repeat . In fact I'm gonna listen to it again now. ❤
There will never be another Tom Petty. This is my favorite!!!!
I've long been a fan of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I was already in my 30s when this song first aired and the video so typified the days of my youth that I instantly fell in love with it.🥰 I still have the original CD. I also have their Damn The Torpedoes and Full Moon Fever albums. I'm a proud child of "The Greatest Generation". To me, this song exemplifies the transition from youthful exuberance (the learning to fly part) TO responsible adulthood and aging (the coming down part). Peace🕊
Thanks for another lovely reaction guys, RIP Tom Petty. There's a lovely live version of this song with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac on backing vocals. 🙋♂
Man, you can hear Jeff Lynne's involvement any time he shows up. Rhythm track sounds like ELO.
Jeff Lynne - Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, Oberheim DMX drum machine, sampler, backing vocals
Tom wrote this song with Jeff Lynne who produced the album it came from. The CD was called Into The Great Wide Open. Jeff is credited with playing guitars, keyboards and bass as well as singing background vocals.
great song from the early 90s written by Tom and Jeff Lynne (from ELO)
Tom Petty is one of my absolute favorite singer/songwriter’s of all time. I miss him so bad! If you haven’t already, you have to hear Breakdown. My favorite song of all time, from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers debut album. The Bangles are actually singing background on this song!
I grew up listening to Tom Petty because of my Dad and Uncle, so his songs resonate with me because of that in addition to him being a wonderful artist. Some of my favorites from him are: Even the Losers, Crawling Back to You, You Don't Know How It Feels, and Room at the Top.
There's a slowed down live version of this with Stevie Nicks singing backup. It took on a new meaning after he passed away.
Another great song the live version with Stevie Nick's is Insider, someday you'll need to listen it marvelous 😊
Tom Petty is one of the greatest artists ever. You would like the song and video for "Into The Great Wide Open"... Awesome song with great storytelling, and Johnny Depp is in the video playing the main character! Thanks for this one today, I love this song! 😘✌️💐
I refer to Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Bob Seger, and Bruce Springsteen as the "Blue Collar Rockers." They all wrote such meaningful songs. Many of them you'd think could have been written by any of those four guys.
Amber, you nailed Tom Petty. The wisdom he put into his songs was hard-earned, so you know he's speaking the truth. The both of you would love what may be his greatest story song, "Into the Great Wide Open", about an up & coming rock & roller who gets swallowed up by the recording industry.
So Jeff Lynne stops by Petty's house. They are sitting in Petty's backyard just playing around "noodling". Lynne asks Petty if he is working on anything and Petty plays a few chords and says that's all I got. Lynne asks if he has any lyrics for it yet and Petty says no not really, and plays the chords again and sings "She's a good girl", "Loves her Mama", plays it again and sings "She loves Jesus", "And America too". Just off the top of his head. Jeff Lynne is plain blown away.
Amber..you have impeccable taste!
You have SO so many more gems to discover! The man left us with a deep well of classic tunes to enjoy ❤️
Tom got his wings & will fly amongst us always & forever.
🎩💘
✌️❤️
Ta, for passing along what your dad taught you Amber. Love this reaction you two! ❤
I legit shed tears when he passed. Such an amazing story teller! Deep dive into their other music that wasn’t main stream. It’s so so good! Wildflowers is amazing… I could
Name so many! Thank you for
Keeping his legacy alive! 😢❤❤
I saw them in concert several times and they were consistently amazing. Thanks for showing the boys some love.
SO many hits! "American Girl" "Refugee" "Here Comes My Girl" "You Got Lucky" "Breakdown"
Holy shit their live performance with Nick's gives me goosebumps. When the crowd joins....my word.
I took my younger brother to Tom Petty at the Gorge Amphitheater. We had seats right up front. Amazing concert, great memories.
From what I read, this song is about the Gulf War. Tom was inspired in writing it when he saw a pilot being interviewed on the news, and the pilot said that flying was easy, but it was coming down that was hard.
One of my favorite songs of his, along with, free fallin, running down a dream, into the great wide open, won't back down.
So many great songs from tom and the heartbreakers. Mary Jane's Last Dance, I Won't Back Down, Free Fallin'...
Petty is the best. Thanks for giving him respect
"Stared out for god knows where, I guess I'll know when i get there" Well he knows because now he's there. RIP Tom!
I love his little birdcall at the end. Amber will like 'Mystery Man', J. would like 'Running Down a Dream. ☮💙🎶
In 1981 or so, he stood up against his album was going to jump up a dollar , and went to court against his own distributor....and won....and changed the way music cost to listen to this day...there is a biography about it. Love your channel....fellow 65 yr. old Okie.
I've been a long time Tom Petty fan, grew up listening to him thanks to my parents. Like I remember exactly where I was at the day he passed away. Over the years I've drifted away from his music cause life and stuff. But hearing his song on the new gta trailer has made me realize just how much I miss him. Hopefully it brings in a whole new generation of Tom Petty fans!
After his passing, in Austin Texas at the ACL (Austin City Limits) Festival weekend they played this along with Freefallin’ and everyone sang along and during Freefallin’ parachutes landed..my daughter was there..she said it was epic and people were crying. His passing was a big loss…luckily, I took my daughter to see him in Austin for his 40th anniversary just 6 months before he passed.
Yes! And he has sometimes a minimalist approach. His lyrics can be real basic yet profound messages are delivered.
"You got Lucky" has to be the next Tom Petty song you guys react to!!!
"Runnin' Down a Dream" & "American Girl" would be great selections to hear/react...will not disappoint!! This tune was a good choice, Thanks👌
They already did "Runnin' Down a Dream".
My all time favorite artist, in my 30 club with 30+ songs I listen to all the time. Next up should be an early hit, Here Comes My Girl!
Ever notice you can string all of Tom Petty's library of songs into one paragraph? I did one night while intoxicated and blew away some friends. This is not exactly how it went but something like this.
I looked for her "All Along the Watchtower" "Walls", just a "A Face in the Crowd", I was "Runnin' Down a Dream, no "I Won't Back Down", looking for the American Girl", because she was "Free Fallin", it was "Mary Jane's Last Dance", they told her "Don't come Around Here No More", It was the "End of the Line", so she became a "Refugee", "The Wild One, Forwever", "Yer So Bad" it was a "Breakdown" I had to be her "Saving Grace", so I was "Learning to Fly", Into the Great Wide Open, To "Handle With Care" that girl because she's an "Angel Dream" and she will "Not Be Alone Anymore".
The cool thing is each time you do it, the story changes. Choose your own adventure by song title. There are so many songs to chose from not listed here too. These are just titles I remember at the moment. I limited it to just songs he did with the Heart Breakers. Thankyou Tom, was this planned, if so that would be even more amazing.
Jeff Lynne (ELO) the man behind the sound. RIP Tom Petty, so many good songs.
Without a doubt you can tell Jeff Lynne from ELO produced Tom Petty's album.
LOVE HIM 1 of my favs Wont back down & Mary Janes last dance & End of the line + his Christmas song Christmas all over again
Face in the Crowd is such a lovely song by Tom
