On arrival the speedometer showed that a distance of 1,968 kilometres had been covered - and the fuel gauge still showed that there was enough fuel left over for around a further 160 kilometres. The total range of the hybrid vehicle, which is available as an option with an 80-litre diesel tank, can therefore be calculated at some 2,129 kilometres.

Hediye Bedir Dude, city driving will always return low mpg. I drove many automatics starting from new Mini's, BMW's on super old Kia Pride ending and truth is that short distance, cold engine, lots of red lights ends up in poor range. If You want a significant change in fuel consumption than You would need much difrent car.

Very impressive, knowing already diesels are the better option for longer journeys anyway, but one question. How much more does it cost to buy this hybrid compared to a normal diesel, and how much money are you in fact saving buying the hybrid, and filling up less, than filling up more, but spending less in the long term?

......and I bet that Mercedes was just as standard as the Jaguar that Jeremy Clarkson drove from Switzerland to Blackpool on one tank of fuel. Jaguar put a lot of work into preparing their car, blueprinting the engine, using high mileage but good condition gearbox and rear differential, carefully "lapped" in, changing the rake of the car to more nose down, low rolling resistance tyres, special brake calliper seals that pulled the pads back from the discs, when not in use and so on and so on.

the title is misleading. Tangiers is only 14 km from Europe. that's the closest African city to Europe. Besides, did they have to show the desert to prove that this is really Africa. Tangiers is a coastal city with a lot of forests and contains no dunes. You could've simply said 1200 mile with one tank. That would've been more realistic.
