- Presenting another edition of 80s Hidden Gems, this is Volume 8. Top 5 seemingly passed over songs from the 80s that should be in more regular rotation in our lives. To clarify, these are songs that while hits in their time they haven’t been as prevalent on radio, in playlists on streaming apps and in pop culture. It seems like we hear the same 50 songs from the 80s in these situations I like to spotlight songs that don’t get their due presently. These are songs that deserve rediscovery. These include songs from new wave band Berlin, New Jack Swing man Bobby Brown, Glam rockers White Lion, new york rocker Eddie Money, and bar band John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.

#5 Like Flames from new wave band Berlin. Best knows for their number one soundtrack hit from Top Gun, Take My Breath Away, Berlin came onto the scene with their underground hit the Metro, in which we’ve covered with lead singer Terri Nunn on one of our very first episodes on this channel.
#4 Wait by White Lion Mainstream hard rock and glam metal started to peak from 1987 to the end of the decade. These bands flooded the charts, Europe with The Final Coundown, Bon Jovi with the big singles from Slippery when Wet, Whitesnake with Here I Go again, Motley Crue with Girls Girls Girls, then Def Leppard released Hysteria Guns N Roses Appeteite for Destruction and on and on. In the middle of all of this a band that was formed in 1983 called White Lion released their sophomore album called Pride.
#3 Roni by Bobby Brown. Take note. From the end of summer 1988 through 1989 nobody few if any artists were bigger than Bobby Brown. He was the king of the new jack swing at that moment. With the release of his multi-platinum album, Don’t Be Cruel in June of 1988, he quickly became a household name with 5 top 10 hits from the album, making him one of only a couple of dozen artists in the history of the rock era to do so.
#2 Endless Nights by the late Eddie Money. The Money Man is finally getting the recognition that he’s so richly deserved. He sadly passed away from Cancer in 2019 after decades of his gritty one of a kind New York voice and countless hits. He busted out on to the music scene in the late 70s with Two Tickets to Parade an all time fixture of Classic Rock Radio.
#1 On the Darkside by John Caffety and the Beaver Brown Band from the movie Eddie and the Cruisers.
This song is just magical. It’s perfectly arranged. Masterfully sung and hauntingly beautiful. From a band that most thought was Bruce Springsteen and the E street band at first listen. the band was formed in Rhode Island in the 70s. They were once called just Beaver Brown, a name they got from a paint can. - Zábava
Drop your 80s Hidden Gem 5er below!

"On The Dark Side" is one of the greatest songs of the last 50 years that did not become a surviving radio standard. In fact, the entire album from Eddie and the Cruisers was and is still, fantastic.
IKR?! Instant anthem
I was stationed in Germany in the 80's the first time I watched Eddie and the Cruisers.
So glad that you got to interview Eddie Money. 💞 R.I.P. Eddie you will be missed.
My parents made me take my 5 year old brother to the Stryper White Lion concert in Bristol, TN. I made the bright decision to take us into the pit. We pushed through the crowd to the stage. I put my little brother on my shoulders. Michael Tramp grabbed my little brother off my shoulders and allowed him to sit on the side of the stage. My brother passed 9 years ago. Every time Wait plays it tears me up inside. Love that song. Thanks for taking me back to 1989.
❤️🙏🏼 Thank you for sharing that with us. An amazing memory to always take with you.
I love the soundtrack for Eddie and the Cruisers. Tender Years still makes me misty eyed when I listen to it. Great picks Adam.
Peter Schilling - "Major Tom" deserves some love as an 80s gem. I play in a bar band doing covers and we play John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band - "On The Dark Side" lol. Great song
I bet you don't remember the club hit by Peter Schilling called ' A Different Story '. It wasn't very popular on the radio but it was a huge club song in 1988.
@@charleskosyjana1295 that song kicks so much ass!
@@mantibarlow6272 Thanks for the reply. Most people in the US have never heard the song. Everyone thinks Peter Schilling only had 1 hit with Major Tom. I was a club DJ in the late 1980's to early 2000's and Different Story was HUGE but when people asked me who did it, they didn't believe it was Schilling. I had to show them the record cover to prove my point.
HOW is Terri Nunn still so gorgeous?!!? Love that she's always kept her trademark two-tone hair! As a teen I used to be partial(?) to girls who looked like that, but they were never as cool as she is!
Love the history of 'Tenderoni' in R&B music, things I never knew. Waiting on that Bobby Brown story!!
OMG!!! "On The Dark Side"!!! So much love for this song! Okay, you got this 100% right! LOL!!
I think it was a computer generated hologram of some sort. Trust me, I'm in IT.
One of my picks for forgotten amazing 80's songs is Then We Danced by The Hooters. It is like instant nostalgia, even if you didn't grow up in the 80's. There is just something about it.
If you lived in the Philly area you knew them well. They were everywhere on local radio and were well-known for their live shows.
GREAT song 👍👍
I totally agree. I remember playing that Nervous Night CD tons. No it a bad track on it. I bought the CD because I think the song Nervous Night wasn't on the record. I also played the debut CDs of The Outfield and Crowded House equally as much. The Hooters also put on one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
@Goober Thoreau Arguably their best song! "Fightin' On The Same Side" (1981), "All You Zombies" (1985 version), "Day By Day" (1986), "Where Do The Children Play" (1986) and "Satellite" (1987) are pretty good too.
@Craig 22 I agree. I hear And We Danced everytime the Hooters are played on radio. They hardly ever play All You Zombies. Nervous Night is one of my all-time 80's CDs.
Thank you for including White Lion's Pride single "Wait." That album got me through a very tough time in my life. I was a teen mom when my first child died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. His loss shattered my whole world. I tend to turn to music to heal and the songs "Wait" and "Listen to the Children" took on new meaning for me because of that loss. God Bless you, Professor. I love discovering 80's Hidden Gems and am so thankful to have found our channel.
Okay you asked for it...I lost my husband soulmate 5 years ago but when we were first dating our hidden gem was Suzanne from Raised on Radio by Journey. He used to sing the temptation infatuation lines right at me. So sexy and loving. We stayed together for 30 years until he passed.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful memory. Peace be with you! Oh snd great song too.
An excellent song from an album full of fantastic songs. RoR is pretty underrated but the musicality, hooks, and production represent a peak for mid-80s AOR pop/rock.
He was a lucky guy I can just tell... gonna listen to that one.
Sorry for your loss !
As a kid I used to obsessively listen to the sax outro on Positive Touch followed by Suzanne, until I screwed up and scratched the record at the end of Positive Touch due to my botched handling of the needle. Suzanne deserves more recognition.
“The dark side” is one of those song that if I hear it, I’m singing it for weeks. Never understood how a one verse song can be so amazing.
Talk Talk deserve their own video. No one mentions them, but their music is classic.
Coming soon my friend.
@@ProfessorofRock Good enough for me! Subscribed.
To me, Talk Talk, is my no. 1 80s group, The Colour of Spring superb album.
.....OH, Baby, I'm surrrrrre the 'Prof' will hit it, soon; my BFF loves the 'Talk', ya can't do ANY 80's themed music show, WITHOUT them!!
Talk Talk by Talk Talk turned me on to New Wave. Followed by Romeo Void, Altered Images and many many more.
Vito Bratta is extremely underrated, his solos were just nuts, his influence is totally Eddie Van Halen with his playing style
John caferty was awesome!.sorry if last name not spelled right.
His "Wait" solo has long been in my top 10, so melodic & perfectly executed! Sadly Underrated....
Hell yeah "On the dark side"! What an Amazing Rockn'Roll song, great list, great video as always!
I find it so sad he put down his guitar for a 9-5 job. Soooo! Sad . All the other guys are still active.
Bratta was coolest-blue Monday is amazing instrumental except for triggered snare sound
For me, Berlin's No More Words is their greatest single
Sex, I'm a ....
I love the video and song for The Metro
And que trump mayhem
Is Terri Nunn a vampire or something? She looks like 6 months older than she did in 1986! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
She did nothing for me in the 80's. Now I'd ask her for a date.
And I feel pretty strongly she
a) couldn’t have cared less then
b) would turn you down now
@@michaelmcdonald8452 Oh I think that's definitely a given for both points. ;-)
Couldn't be! The good prof must have used his suped-up Delorean to travel back in time then interview Terri. He DOES love the 80s...
If Terri were a vampire, she'd be the prettiest since Akasha (R.I.P. Aaliyah)
Did you know that Terri Nunn was in the Disco movie, Thank God It's Friday? She was the friend who was with Frannie (another kid actor, Valerie Landsberg) Just an interesting trivia fact lol
Roni was always my favorite song from Bobby Brown song behind the On Our Own. When my parents purchased their first CD player in the late 80s, Don't Be Cruel, Michael Jackson's Bad, Best of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium were the albums that I remember hearing in rotation until we added more CDs.
I always love the underrated 1980's song by Chris Deburgh
"Don't pay the Ferryman"
It's my favourite song of his, not that I know too many but that one stands out.
High on emotion is my favorite
Lwaves High on emotion is the one I remember the most...As well as lady in red
@@michaelrochester48 Yeah, High On Emotion is another good song of his and there can't be many who don't know Lady In Red, one of the great ballads. I'll also add A Spaceman Came Travelling, seeing as we recently had that Xmas thing....sort of. :-)
That one and his song " Revolution".. Incredible songs
Bobby Brown's music ruled my adolescent years! New Jack Swing is a CRIMINALLY underrated genre!
For sure! Saw New Edition with Bobby Brown and Al B. Sure in West Palm back in the late 80’s. Love New Jack Swing! Wish XM would add a channel for that and Freestyle! Make my own playlists so I can “keep the music alive”!
@@willix1391 YES, Freestyle and New Jack Swing!
"Roni" STILL gets some pretty good play on old school R&B stations during the "Quiet Storm" hours between 7 PM & 12 midnight, when they play the love songs & dedications.
Saw them open for Brian Adams in the Tacoma Dome in 198...5?
Well, that's your PRE-rogative...
This channel easily deserves 1mil + subs
To however is out there reading this message, if you are having a hard time just remember you are not alone and never give up ! i wish you health, success, love, and happiness ...
Back at’cha Dude!
Excellent list! Especially White Lion, very underrated and overlooked band. Still remember the first time I heard "When the children cry", had my alarm set to the local rock station for my morning wake up in Jr. high, woke up one morning to that song and thought I was dreaming it was so haunting. Still takes me back to that sleepy morning every time I hear it.
I loved White Lion! I had that album on cassette and have it on CD and play it regularly.
My fave Berlin songs is No More Words.
I love how Terri Ninn's face lights up when you mention, "Like Flames". I think artists really appreciate when an interviewer shows a greater depth of knowledge on their body of work outside of the "standard" hits.
I got to meet Juice Newton a few years ago. I told her my favorite of her songs was “Can’t Wait All Night”, a song that went to #44 on the Hot 100, I believe. It was written be Bryan Adams, if I remember right. She said “Really? My husband really likes that song”. She acted as though not one of her fans had brought it up in ages.
OMG - Eddie and the Cruisers soundtrack was a fave. I was only thinking about that the other day of forgotten soundtracks or even songs on soundtracks that need to be revived!
My dad would listen to old country music when mom was at work at night while I’d be watching tv, Cash, Jones etc, but his fave was Hank Williams Sr.
While I watched him go into a coma for 3 days until he passed away I remember sitting watching tv listening to these songs and then I bought Hank Sr greatest hits and he and I alone in his hospital room listened over and over again, I saw his hand strumming along occasionally. Music is power. R.I.P. dad and to your father as well !
Beautiful story. Truly. Thank you fir sharing.
@@ProfessorofRock it’s one of my favorites because it’s basically the only musical memory he and I had, he never got to see my band perform. Thank you for your works too!
Thanks for sharing your memory of you and your Dad with us. I've got one in particular with my Mom, who passed away from cancer in 2013. You've actually already covered the song in question, Space Age Love Song. We were driving around on some random errand in what must've been 2007/2008, and it came on the radio (shoutout to 93.7 Jack FM). I immediately fell in love with that opening guitar riff, and asked her if she knew the song title. She was beaming, and told me all about A Flock of Seagulls. She was born in 1970, so she got to experience the best of the 80's. To this day, whenever I'm in a rut or just not feeling too hot, I can throw on Space Age Love Song and be transported back to that moment. It's like I'm arm in arm with her, listening along in the crowd at one of their shows, smile on my face and tears welling in my eyes. Thanks for all you do and for sharing your love of music with us!
White Lion! Dude you're awesome, I loved that whole album.
Agreed!.... Loved all their albums!
Yep, still got their first few albums on vinyl.
If you are my age and have grown up in RI, you have the name 'Beaver Brown' indelibly etched in your brain from the thousands of FM radio commercials for bars that they would be playing in back in the day!
When the children cry is one of my favorite songs! So beautiful, the guitars are amazing.
Indeed. Beautiful acoustic and killer emotional solo
Growing up my parents listened to good music. A lot of singer/songwriter stuff; simon and Garfunkel, james taylor, neil diamond and john denver. When we were young my mom would sing Denver's "Sunshine on my shoulders" to us. Even though she is thankfully still with us, it makes me cry every time I hear it.
Sounds like we had the same childhood. My parents liked great music too!! Eagles, Southern Rock, Bee Gees, Dire Straits, Moody Blues etc.
"Wait" by White Lion is an absolute incredible song. I would argue that the airy silky smooth solo by Vito here is one of the best solos in rock music history.
There should be a top 5 list of songs by European artists that were hits in Europe but were never huge in the States. Sometimes I think that the US audience missed out on some interesting stuff.
Good idea. I'm on it.
I agree completely! My dad was the Air Force and we were in Germany for most of the 80s and i consider it a BLESSING for many reasons and a big one is the music ! I would later learn all the songs that i may missed if i was stateside during that time. It was really a time that i learned to appreciate music from all kinds of artists and learned to essentially ignore "genre". It was a fantastic time! And Professor of Rock, THANK YOU for your time and effort with your site! My son and i tune in together and he has developed quite a diverse taste for music in a big part to you!
I’d love that. I started following a new wave site a few weeks ago and everyday there’s a great song from a European artist I’d never heard of.
I’ve also found it interesting discovering over the years how bands like A-ha and Simple Minds were actually as a French friend once put it “as big as U2 over there.”
Like China in your hand. Even the snotty indie listening Brits today rag on it. Plenty more.
@@johnpoulton9446 It's the other way around sometimes. I’m from Germany and there are artists who are big in the States but relatively small in Germany. I was in New York a couple years ago and saw Hall & Oates live in concert. While they had one hit after another in the US, you hardly know anything else other than "Maneater" and "Out Of Touch" in Germany.
Terri Nunn and Aimee Mann are two great female singers that are underrated IMO.
Eddie Money played in a free concert in the park here in Camarillo Ca. He was playing and said it was time to ends the show per the contract, then he said he only lived 20 miles from here so he would just hang out and play more. He did hang out and did play more.
My dad was born and raised in Albania and emigrated to the States in the 60s. He wasn’t a big fan of American music so we didn’t have any songs or artists that we shared a love for - until Rod Stewart released “Forever Young”. For some reason, that song and video struck a chord with my dad. I remember buying Rod’s “Out of Order” cassette tape and giving that to my dad as a gift. Similar to the story of how Eddie Money’s song caught you off guard at the grocery store, I can’t hear “Forever Young” without immediately thinking of my dad and getting a little emotional.
Absolutely love your CZcams channel! Thank you for sharing these great stories and giving music fans a new found respect and appreciation for the artists, albums, and songs that we grew up loving (or discovered later in life).
Glad to see some love for JC and the Beaver Brown. Great band. RI pride, baby!
I’m a huge fan of Eddie and the Cruisers and it’s sequel. I would LOVE to see an interview with Cafferty and Pare and to delve into how a hand writes songs for a script like that and how a crew can make those songs seem so iconic in the movie. It shouldn’t be that easy to write songs that aren’t hits but leave us all thinking they were twenty years ago!! So much fertile ground here!
On the Darkside........LOVE that song. The vocals have always grabbed my attention.
I would say that the entire Brown album was solid. His follow up album was also good. Very complete albums, and very good music.
I sang Blackbird to my daughter when she was just born, and rushed to Children's hospital. It was the only song she would fall asleep to when she would cry in the hospital as I gently rubbed her head....
I completely agree with you on John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band. I was obsessed with that album. Money man has always been a favorite of mine and to share my story of songs taking us back in time to memories we shared with loved ones then here is mine-
I lost my youngest little brother when he was only 6 weeks 21 years old and as a little boy he would brilliantly sing out Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog by 3 Dog Night and as he got older he grew into this really great guitar player and he loved Ozzy Osbourne. Fast Forward to my other younger brother ( he was the middle sibling of 3 kids ) and he was shot and killed while doing his job on a glorious 71 degree morning in April. Unfortunately, we had a misunderstanding and he left this realm before we made amends. That’s so hard! 5 weeks later I went to see Like Bryan by myself and for my birthday. I had forgotten about his song Drink A Beer so when he started to play it I was immediately taken back to both my brothers and our time together as children. I began to silently weep and all of a sudden the woman standing to the left of me put her hand into mine and raised our arms up together and then a few seconds after that the woman on my right side did the same thing. There we were 3 strangers coming together in song and memory and suddenly like a dream it was my brother Bill on my left, and my brother Kenny on my right, and we were kids again! I will never forget it! It was incredibly profound. Thanks for letting me share! ♥️
Anytime I hear Jeremiah was a Bullfrog or Crazy Train I instantly remember my brother Kenny and I get teary eyed, or bawl, and any time I hear Kenny Chesney or Garth Brooks I instantly think of my brother Bill and I get teary eyed, or bawl. I miss them so very much!
Wow. Heartfelt story about the power of music. Thank you for sharing my friend.
I don’t remember ever hearing “Like Flames”. Thank you for that. With regard to ‘80’s songs that stick in my memory, the biggest was probably “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx. I fell for a girl and her baby daughter, but she chose to go back to her abusive ex-husband to try to make things work. They didn’t, but they had. Iced halfway across the country and we didn’t get together until 8 years later. “Right Here Waiting” was our song.
We married, and three months later she started getting sick. She lost her job, never to work again.
I took care of her for 17 years until she passed in 2014.
Every time I hear that song, I think of her and shed a tear or two, as I’m waiting again to join her , but this time forever.
Thank you for your efforts to help us remember when music moved us, Professor.
The entire Reckless album from Bryan Adams takes me back to better times for sure.
Me too. A real no filler album.
Foreigner 4. Was the same
@@jonjones971 coming out of the gate with "Night Life" set the tone for that masterpiece🤘🎸🤘
Eddie Money had an awesome unique voice. Please go back to the first two albums too.
Pride was White Lion's second album.... Their first, Fight to Survive, is a real rocker!!!
I listen to "Wait" every couple of months, and then it takes me down a whole 80's rock/metal/pop rabbit whole for a couple hours. Never fails.
ENDLESS NIGHTS!!!!!! 5 star. ....best song you've ever picked on this show. What a beautiful sleeper! I LOVE this song. Never been better Professor!!!!
Whenever I hear crowded house 🏠 something so strong . My mom loved it. I loved split enz . And Julian lennon valotte.
>gasp< VALOTTE!!! ....THAT'S IT, I'm adding that to my 'hidden gems' list!! (#9 Pop, Dec. 1984)
Tuff Enuff- The Fabulous Thunderbirds as a suggestion for the next hidden gems list.
....yeeeeeahhhh, couldn't ESCAPE that one, Summer of '86!!
As a kid, I really hated that song. But now it transforms me back to that era and I'm singing right along with it. Funny how time changes you.
Definitely
Classic!
Good one!
Special albums that my family and I loved growing up are "Styx - Kilroy Was Here," "Madness' self titled Madness album," "Level 42 - World Machine" and "Rolling Stones Let it Bleed." I love those albums so much and I listened to those with my family all through the 80's and loved them all. We knew every lyric to every song on them! Mostly it was because I played them no stop and my family had no choice but to hear them, I wouldn't trade it for anything!
Eddie and the Cruisers - an all time fav! Love the music from John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.
Great video! I used to listen to ‘Roni’ and that entire Don’t Be Cruel cassette to death when it was released. I remember doing a 6th grade class project where I had to re-write all the lyrics to a popular song and the song was then played for the class while the new written lyrics were displayed with the screen Projector. Such a fun project! I chose ‘Don’t Be Cruel’. 😊
Sounds like you went to a cool school!
😁❤@@lynnestamey7272
Berlin was VERY underrated in the 80s. My sister went to see them open for the B52s a couple years ago and caught one of the sticks from the drummer. She had a blast.
Production value of your videos is just fantastic! The depth of information is always intriguing, and your delivery is heartfelt and captivating. Bravo!
"I Wanna Go Back" is DEFINITELY in my top 10 80's songs that's UNDER appreciated. One of those songs that takes me back to a teenager when life was easy and makes me smile EVERYTIME I hear it.
Eddie and the cruisers.. my favorite. Just a great album, the "unreleased tapes" with the dialogue fully pull all the emotions together from music to book to movie, words and music🤞.
Words and Music 🤞🏻
Tremendous work you put into your content my guy.. seriously, great way with words without sounding pretentious as well.. glad I subbed
Thank you, thank you, thank you for highlighting "Like Flames." It was so highly underrated as was the album, which remains one of my favorites. I always though that the possible reason it didn't become a hit was because DJs, radio stations, and listeners were looking for a "Take My Breath Away, Pt. 2" and when this blast of angry synth/guitar rock came out, it just wasn't what they wanted. It was such a shame. I saw Berlin twice back then and they were awesome. Terri Nunn's voice was stunning. I'm so glad someone loves this track as much as I do.
The Pride album was one of my favorites in the 1980's. I could never figure out why they weren't more popular than they were.
Vito Bratta, holy smoke. What a virtuoso! Loved White Lion and particularly Little Fighter, I still listen to it to this day. What great music, loved Berlin and all the others, we really had such variety and were so lucky to have that music. Love this channel!
Rockin' at Midnight by the Honeydrippers , No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney, Cool KIds by KIx , Hanging on a heartbeat by the Hooters, Where do the children go by The Hooters and Patty Smyth
Professor. You put so much knowledge, so much energy, so much emotion in your gems, that it is impossible not to enlarge my list of favorites from the 80s. Thank you very much for sharing.
I already wait for the next gems ...
Cheers
Thank you for highlighting Eddie Money. Since 7th grade hearing Baby Hold On Eddie has been my favorite solo singer. His concerts were epic all 17 that I've been to. Again glad to see someone besides Joe Dirt and me love Eddie.
“Roni is actually about my daughter.”
Yeah, I don’t believe that for a second. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I do. When you're a huge star that has so many girls that you can't remember their names, you can't write a heart felt song about them. It's easier to write about someone that really means something to you, like your kid or your dog.
1. NIK KERSHAW - WOULDNT IT BE GOOD
2. TIL TUESDAY - VOICES CARRY
Til Tuesdays "What About Love", that track just blew me away!
Voices Carry is one of the most amazing songs ever. I mentioned it to Aimee Mann once in Twitter and she sent me a heart back as a reply
Absolutely love White Lion.....they imo were totally underrated by ppl 😓. When the children cry and Wait are by far my two favorites by them. Wish they did get more air time. Wait is a bittersweet song for me as I'd just lost my husband in Oct of 87. This song was my cry out to him for a long time 💗🕊️
I had a choir teacher in High School (1983-1987) who had us perform "On The Dark Side". (He was in a bar band and it spilled over into his job).
I've heard it a little more in recent years but for a very long time I rarely if ever heard "Der Kommisar" by ATF (or the original by Falco). I can think of lots of others, but that's about as close to a hit that I can think of.
Hey Professor, you consistently turn in a great show. I appreciate your genuine affection for the music. Your sincerity is a refreshing change from most of the junk on the internet.
I was talking to someone recently who said his wife had been burning the midnight oils I heard this and stopped in my tracks to reach back and find the hit song I knew they (Midnight Oil) had in 1987. It took me only a minute to remember the song...Beds Are Burning.. An excellent song from the 80's that never should have been taken out of rotation. So much good stuff there.
Still hear it here on Australian radio at least once a week
On The Dark Side, one of my favorite songs of all time. a 3 minute polished gem of simple, straight-forward feel-good rock.
"Wait" has been included on a number of hair metal-themed compilations, yet gets ignored on radio, and "On the Dark Side" is one of my favorite forgotten gems! Radio is so bland and predictable these days... come on, play songs you just don't hear much of these days! It's not all just "Billie Jean", or "Don't Stop Believin'", or "Every Breath You Take".
Such a great song
...can you BE, any MORE right!?? ...80's Pop was a SMORGASBORD of sounds, Rock, Metal, Dance-Pop, AC ballads, Funk & R&B....we had it GOOOOD....
The problem with the FM dial is most of stations are owned by Clear Channel and they have one program director and they play the same songs day after day and they are so over played that you just can't stand herring them songs over an over again day after day. And you no the artists have so many great songs but they play the same ones over and over.
@@lawrencemagda3357 Very, very sad. I didn't know most FM stations are owned by Clear Channel.
"Wait" is a brilliantly crafted song. One of my fave guitar solos in the 1980s. Vito Bratta was heavily influenced by Van Halen but took guitar in his own direction. The melody and legato of the solo is breath-taking.
The '80s were the golden years for Australian and NZ artists too. Some like INXS and Men at Work made it in the US, but there were so many that made it into the Top10s week after week, knocking European and American performers down the chart ladder. A story in itself to tell.
You're right; there was an Aussie song that made it top 10 [maybe #1] in 1987, title escapes me for the moment...
Eddie Money... god !!!!! One of the Kings of rock music.... I wanna go back is still my jam out of all of his songs
I think Duran Duran’s “Come Undone” is a hidden gem. Mostly you’ll hear the hits from RIO but not much from the later lineup. Warren Cuccrullo (from Missing Persons) did some very cool guitar work after Andy Taylor left.
Sure but that was the 90s dude👍
@@theangrygamer1008 Crap! I forgot that was 93' LOL ! Ah , brain cells...
@@raserx63 all blends into one once you hit 40😁
"Unbeknownst to Speed...Racer X was in reality Speed's older brother, Rex..who ran away from home when Speed was just a baby...."
Love, Love, Love both of the Eddie & The Cruisers movie. Favorite song is Garden of Eden. Buy both disks, it's worth it!
Grew up in Rhode Island and they were played 24/7 on WPRO and glad to see White Lion getting some love. Another gem is Heart and Soul by T'pau.
I love the "Eddie and The Cruisers" soundtrack LP on the shelf!
I personally liked Berlin's "No More Words" that appeared on the "B" side of Madonna's "Crazy For You". I heard they shared the label because neither had enough money to spend on their own two sided single. Not sure if that's true, but I think the Berlin side was better than the "A" side by Madonna. Berlin also had a cool video for the single.
I loved No More Words also. It was on a compilation album in Australia in the 80’s and I played it over and over til the tape wore out. 😂💪🏼
@@MsHazza73 Awesome. It was a great song. Do you remember any other songs on the tape?
@@brooklyncarmelena5755 I’ll look it up, see if I can find it. Hang on a sec...
@@brooklyncarmelena5755 Yes, found it! Hits Huge ‘84. 💪🏼🎉 Loved it.
@@MsHazza73 I looked it up. There's a lot of great songs on it. Many in which I own the original records, and four artists I've been friends with.
"Welcome to the Boomtown" by Davjd & David. That entire album was excellent.
Swallowed By the Cracks another underated song
I've got a pretty decent sized collection of albums from various artists on CD and Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" is one of them. So many great singles from it, as mentioned in the video. One other cut from the album that I love is "I'll Be Good to You." The bass line on that track is FIRE! The song was released as a single, but only in Japan. Had it been released as a single in the United States, I think it could've been just as big of a hit as the other singles. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the video on the "Don't Be Cruel" album and I hope to hear more from that interview with Bobby Brown!
Great call with "On the Dark Side." Totally iconic song. So unique.
"When the Heart Rules the Mind" by GTR. A forgotten, hidden(ish) gem.....
I heard Carly Simon’s song Coming Around Again for the first time in a long time and cried like a baby. It felt like she was singing to me in that song. I went through so much as a small depressed kid and that song gave me major hope. Nothing stays the same but if you’re willing to play the game it’s coming around again. 😢
Truly, one of my favorite songs ever. My mom had the album and I was obsessed with it. Also All I Want Is You, Give Me All Night and It's the Stuff that Dreams are Made of. The whole album was really great. Thanks for sharing!
@@ProfessorofRock you’re welcome and thank you for responding. Keep the content coming.
Every time that "On the Darkside" comes on anywhere I crank it to "11"....Love JC and The BBB...That movie is one of my all time favorites, and the soundtrack as well as the extended montage versions from the film that were released later were just fire!! "Words and Music, Words and music....." That scene in particular strikes a chord with me. Thanks for the great memories Adam.
Eddie was my youth....grew up in the San Francisco Bay area in the 70', 80s and 90s. I was hooked the first time I ever heard Baby hold on and I'm still an "Ed Head" lol I've seen over 138 of his concerts! He was never fully appreciated but he loved his fans till the end!!
Hard to believe you discussed John Cafferty's history without mentioning his second biggest, the great anthem "C.I.T.Y"
Love your work!! The amount of hard work and expert knowledge is awesome to watch!! Thanks again.
"On The Darkside" reminds me of getting ready to for school .. the local rock station seemed to play it every morning at about the same time. So, ya! Lots of memories of rushing around trying not to be late LOL
Wait by White Lion, YES. One of the few hair metal songs I still listen to on a regular basis.
The thing about Eddie and the Cruisers; Michael Pare's speaking voice sounds like the singers voice making it believable.
Probably the best lip syncing I have ever seen too!!
It's a really nice touch when the filmmakers put the effort in to make sure the singer and actor voices sound like they belong together. Too many times they're nothing alike.
Michael Pare; one of our fav cult film actors from the 80s!
Wow! Terri Nunn's table has impeccable taste in music.
That’s actually our table.
@@ProfessorofRock I sit corrected! Your table has impeccable taste in music!
Your table also reminded me of how much I wish you'd cover Matt Johnson and The The. To me he seems like a prophet of the age we're living in now, from back in the 1980s.
@@grakkal I covered The The in my new wave hidden gems about 2 months ago. Thanks for watching!
What table?

@@austintrousdale2397 yeah i know right?!
On the Dark side was a sleeper. One of my favorite songs in the 80’s.
I still have "Wait" on my playlist. Killer song, killer riff and that guitar solo is just sick. "On the Darkside" still gets some good radio play on classic rock radio. Great song.
Talk Talk:
Life's what you make it,
It's my life
Such a shame
Dum Dum Girl,
Living in another world
Give it up
I believe in you
I Believe in you was a emotional song and hits close to home. The professor needs to do a deep dive on it
Absolutely love this channel.. I was born in 1970 into a family of musicians that led me to have such an open mind and love for music. Of course the 80's holds a special place in my heart seeing in was a great decade for music and was also when I was coming of age. Every week blowing far too much of my paycheck at Record Town or Strawberries. I'll throw out a few songs from the 80's that I recently pulled up to go back in time.. Level 42-Something About You, When in Rome-The Promise, Glass Tiger-Someday, Erasure-A little Respect, Breath-All This I should Have Known, Tora Tora-Phantom Rider, Giant-I See You In My Dreams, Slaughter - Fly To The Angels, Beats International - Dub Be Good To Me, SOHO - Hippy Chick, Maxi Priest - Close to You, Jon Secada - Just Another Day, Howard Jones - No One is to Blame, The Tubes - She's a Beauty.. Phil Collins Marylin Martin - Separate Lives.
