Top 5 Forgotten 80s Songs You HAVE To Hear Vol. 3 | POP FIX | Professor of Rock

- čas přidán 23. 07. 2024
- Featuring exclusive commentary from Rick Springfield, Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey, and Loverboy frontman, Mike Reno, presenting 5 songs from the 80s that haven't been given their due. This is volume 3 of the Pop fix we covered earlier. Despite a resurgence of 80s music in TV shows and movies of late (think Stranger Things, Ready Player One, and Glow), as well as increased radio play and streaming, our five featured songs don't seem to make the cut, but deserve recognition. Listen to them in the playlist below. Songs included: Affair of the Heart by Rick Springfield, The Captain of her Heart by Double, Feel it Again by Honeymoon Suite, Lay Your Hands on Me by Thompson Twins, and Talk it Over by Grayson Hugh.

#80sHiddenGems #80s #Top5
Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock , always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time; I you love music, You'll want to subscribe below so you don't miss out. We have so much more coming…
I've done a few videos where I've discussed 5 seemingly passed over songs from the 80s that should be in more regular rotation in our lives. As I've said before it seems like whenever pop culture uses music from the 80s to represent the decade or to conjure up an emotion or a nostalgic feeling, the same 30 songs get used over and over again, even on radio stations, we here a lot of the same songs on repeat. We all love these songs but there is so much more to celebrate. So here are 5 more songs.
The past 2 volumes I've done, some people have commented and said, ….these are songs I've heard before, or still hear.
Again my criteria here has always been that the songs I cover for the most part were hits in their day but are a lot of times at the back of the bus, decades later, so that's why I celebrate them.
They haven't been used in pop culture much and haven't received as much radio play. So It's time to change That. I've included them in a playlist below so you can listen and see if you agree. Make sure to click below and leave a comment on your feelings.
So let's get into it:
#5 Affair of the Heart by Rick Springfield. Rick Springfield was a few years beyond his massive number one smash and 80s standard, Jessie's Girl. when he released this song. Featuring the classic 80s guitar and synth dynamic duo that carried it up the charts.
#4 The Captain of her Heart by Double This perfectly graceful slice of dream pop sat right at the midpoint of Haunting and Peaceful, depending on your mood or your nature. I always felt that it was quite eerie yet a completely satisfying and transfixing melody whenever it came on the radio it always hypnotized me into a harmonious trance.
#3 Feel It again Honeymoon Suite There were many great artists that came out of Canada that had great output in the 80s, From Bryan Adams and Rush to Loverboy and Cory Hart and Triumph to Glass Tiger and this band that formed in 1981. Honeymoon Suite would switch members before getting a record deal in 1983, with singer/guitairst Johnnie Dee as the consistent and core member up to that point.
#2 Lay Your Hands on Me Thompson Twins: I'll tell you right now. This is a perfect pop song. It's Synth Pop Majesty. It was the first single released from the Thompsons' album Here's to Future Days written by the three members Tom Bailey, Allannah Currie and Joe Leeway. There are several versions of this song. It was first put out in the UK a little less than a year before the album was dropped.
#1 Talk It Over by Grayson Hugh This song seemed to come out of nowhere in 1988. Grayson Hugh started playing piano at 3, Bought up on classical music until his early teens when rock and soul took over. He played piano in a black gospel choir for a year, studied under several great musicians and dropped out of high school to focus on 100% on music. He released an album in 1980 that didn't take. - Hudba
MTV, take note, this is what's up.
MTV is for todlers and kids , not for adults anymore ...
MTV now stands for MEDIA Television not MUSIC Television
Filmation77 or Mediocre.
MTV is dead. TV is dead. It’s channels like these helping keep music alive.
I really wish they had a classic MTV channel, where they did nothing but do playlists from vids of the 80s. Like just lift the lists from the first day to the last day of 89, and mix them all together. I wish they even had the cool breaks too like they did in the middle of the night the first couple of years. Does anyone remember them? Miss old MTV
My hidden gem fiver in no particular order: "Life In A Northern Town" by Dream Academy, "On The Loose" by Saga, "The Promise" by When In Rome, "Just Between You and Me" by April Wine, "Heat of the Moment" by Asia
And I'll see you one more April Wine song, Sign of the Gypsie Queen.
All of those are some of my 80s favs.
Gary Starnes That entire Asia album was incredible
All amazing songs, including Sign of the Gypsy Queen. Saw April Wine twice and Asia in the 80s. Awesome shows. Saw AW 5 yrs ago. Miles was an octave low until they took a break. Must have did a line or 2 because he came back sounding spot on.
"Life In A Northern Town" by Dream Academy. Love it too.
Rick Springfield is a highly underated lyricist. Who else could work the words acquiesce & moot seamlessy into a song.
So sad Rick wasn’t taken seriously. Because of his good looks and being on a soap made the record companies not take him seriously. So sad because he was an awesome musician
Loved his music.... "Red Hot and Blue Love"
I listen one of his latest songs just a couple of years ago it was really great song
I distinctly remember looking up the word moot in the dictionary in 1981!
@@jojodyan Rick Springfield teaching vocabulary to us all. 😆
My late husband and I fell in love to Captain of her Heart. I kept telling him he was the Captain of my ❤. And he was for over 30 years.
Eye In the Sky, Every Time You Go Away, One Night In Bangkok, Video Killed The Radio Star and 99 Red Balloons.
Nunya Business 99 Red Balloons intro would make a perfect rap sample
@@jimeiden2360 It has been used as a rap sample, yes!
The hole in the moon, glass tiger i guess
Still love Eye in the sky, one night, and 99.
Johnny Hates Jazz "Shattered Dreams"
Lionheart Roar shattered dreams..... What a beautiful song....
Totally agree!!!! I love that song! And their song turn back the clock
Yes!!!!!
I prefer Turn Back The Clock.
Great song
"King for a Day" is another Thompson Twins song that seems to have been forgotten.
At one time that was my favorite Thompson Twins song.
My favorite of theirs
Absolutely a favorite of mine! Infectious lyrics and melody. One of their best along with "Wish You Were Here"
Awful song
I LIVED to hear that song - it made my day!
You have to get Howard Jones on one of these, he made some great music.
Lance37a saw him live a couple of years ago. He’s still great.
@@sbrown6798 I would love to see him one day, he had a lot of great songs.
I am fan 🥰💕 HoJo 👏👌
Totally
Oh yes. The Singing Haircut. Fab.
More top songs from the '80s: "Stay the Night" by Benjamin Orr (RIP), "Don't Disturb This Groove" by The System, "Don't Lose My Number" by Phil Collins, "Wild, Wild West" by The Escape Club, "If This Is It" from Huey Lewis and the News (that's my top fav song EVER)!!! "If She Would've Been Faithful..." by Chicago, "Along Comes A Woman" by Chicago, "Whirly Girl" by OXO, "Modern Day Delilah" by Van Stephenson (RIP), "When the Going Gets Tough" by Billy Ocean, "Together Forever" by Rick Astley, "Wrapped Around Your Finger" by The Police, Fortess Around Your Heart" by Sting, "On the Loose" by Saga, "Don't Shed A Tear" by Paul Carrack, "Silent Running" (On Dangerous Ground) by Mike + the Mechanics, "I'll See You In My Dreams" by Giant, "Remember My Name" by House of Lords, along with many others from the '80s!!! Also "Jelly Roll" by Blue Murder, "Scared" by Dangerous Toys, and "Couple Days Off" in the '90s by Huey Lewis and the News!!! :)
The Lace has more good songs on it.
Benjamin Orr was a talent taken too soon; his "In Circles" is a real earworm.
Don't shed a tear , stay the night ... amazing
Voices Carry-Til Tuesday, Point Of No Return-Exposè, Luka-Suzanne Vega, Toy Soldiers-Martika
Yes.
I love Toy Solider !😩
Jermaine Stewart - We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off also gets my vote, a very underrated song. I could honestly listen to this on loop for hours
I realize that Rick was huge in the 80s, but was later thought of as a joke to "serious" musicians. His song writing and his lyrics are actually amazing. He deserves more respect.
Amen!!! ‘Shock, Denial, Anger, Acceptance’ is a masterpiece.
I saw him live at a casino near me in the mid 2000s maybe. I think it was just him and a piano. The guy was INCREDIBLE! Just mindblowing!
What about his album “ Tao”.?😀
@@andyshelton4889 that is a great album! "My Father's Chair" still chokes me up. The whole album is good.
Andy Shelton Tao is BRILLIANT!!
The 80s had some amazing songs. Such a great decade.
The 80's was indeed amazing.
"Shattered Dreams" should've been a #1 hit instead of #2 in the U.S.!!! :(
The best
80's = BEST
@@tyger813 Agreed. I bet the band are still thinking that too though the royalties will be consolation.
Friends tease me a lot for liking Rick Springfield, but the guy is massively talented, his songs are catchy as hell and at 70 he's STILL cranking out music. His live performances are fun too. He's a great performer. "Affair of the Heart" is one of my all-time favorite RS songs. Thanks for highlighting this great song!
He also had a great sense of humor. When his first album was released, the first song was "Bruce"...a track that vented Rick's irritation with being confused with Bruce Springsteen. Hilarious!
Rick is also a great lyricist as well! "Affair of the Heart" is one of many superb examples of this. Yeah, not sure why some folks don't give this guy the credit he deserves. "Jessie's Girl" is one of the (if not "the") best pop/rock songs ever put down on vinyl! Four freakin' power chords arranged perfectly! Everybody in the world knows this song...it's right up there with "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. Guilty pleasures? If so, then yes! I'm guilty! ;-)
I love him and the Foo Fighters' clips on CZcams, esp Love Somebody.
My friends always gave me/still give me crap about liking him. I think part of it is he is popular with the ladies because of his looks but hey, more power to him! I love his music and have seen him many times in concert and own all his records/CDs. Critics don't give him any respect because he is good looking, writes great power pop songs filled with hooks and also does acting. What many casual fans don't know is he was always a musician first but turned to acting to make some money. He's not Jack Wagner or Don Johnson. He's a great musician, singer and songwriter.
@@lisagulick4144 For the longest time I thought that song was written for the movie of the same name.
Rick Springfield is so much more than Jessie's Girl. I absolutely love all of his work. I know all of his songs, all albums start to finish. His work got much more mature over the course of the 1980's, especially Rock of Life. That album is well worth the listen, as well as all of his other work.
Top 10 Favorite Rick Springfield Songs (in no specific order)
-I Get Excited
-Don't Talk To Strangers
-Honeymoon In Beirut
-Woman
-State of the Heart
-Affair of the Heart
-The American Girl
-Carry Me Away
-Don't Walk Away
PLEASE do a video of his work like you did for Phil Collins and Billy Joel
Sam Bennett I agree, he's definitely worthy of an entire feature. Rick Springfield was critical to many a high school soundtracks. Especially with his role as Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital. He, like Hall and Oates, and a couple other artists, seem to put out an album every year back then and everyone looked forward to them.
I agree Rick Springfield is fantastic
HONEYMOON IN BEIRUT is my big fave from rick in the 80s
Felicity Cook yes, such a great song. I wish more people would listen to all of his work instead of just Jessie’s Girl. Rock of Life itself is just such a fantastic record. It’s produced perfectly, and the band makes this ricks best album musically in my opinion. I don’t mean that song wise, just because the performance of the songs themselves from everyone involved on the record is outstanding. This album is so underrated. I guarantee you that the album would’ve been way bigger and the songs would’ve been more notable hits if he was able to tour behind the record. The album was released and shortly after, Rick was in a really bad accident, I believe it was either an atv or a dirt bike, and was severely injured. He had to get a metal plate put in his shoulder and the doctor said touring was out of the question. That sucks too, because this was supposed to be a comeback record since he went silent from the music scene after his album Tao was wrapped along with promotion and touring. He took two years off and then made Rock of life, but couldn’t tour so it kind of just faded away from popularity, which is a real shame.
I'd like to add "Human Touch" and "Celebrate Youth" to that list.
His enthusiasm for EVERY.SINGLE.SONG is unbelievable!!
thank you so much!
Man, I am so glad you gave some love to Honeymoon Suite. They always reminded me of Night Ranger. I love that tune “Feel It Again.” Super underrated.

Great classic songs 😊✌️
@@eightiesmusic1984 Dear God by Midge Ure also!
“I Got a New Girl Now” is Honeymoon Suite’s best song, but “I feel it Again” is a hidden gem.
I would also add lunatic fringe by red Rider, something going on by Frida, Why Me by Planet P and Let’s Go All the Way by Slyy Foxx
Yes....I suggested Frida on his last video. He didn't seem to pay attention though! LOL
I still freaking love “Let’s Go All The Way”!!!
This version is “totally awesome”

Tony Carey was/is a musical stud. Very underrated musician that should've had much more success here in the states. His, "I Won't be Home Tonight" single was a legit rocker! "Why Me" was a brilliant tune as well!
Lunatic fringe is a great song.
I love “Captain of Her Heart” totally underrated classic!
5 underrated classics in my opinion;
“I Got You” - Split Enz
“I’ve Been in Love Before” - Cutting Crew
“Soul City” - Partland Brothers
“Fantasy” - Aldo Nova
“Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You” - Glenn Medeiros
ABC: When Smokey Sings
Danny Wilson: Mary's Prayer
Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder: Together in Electric Dreams
Simple Minds: Alive and Kicking
I was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone had suggested "Mary's Prayer", and you did. PERFECT fit for this topic.
Black - Wonderful life
Mary’s Prayer was covered In episode 2
Mary's Prayer could be rereleased today and get major airplay.
I loved Simple Minds so much I bought their record - love the video of that song - All the things she said....
Gotta check out "On The Loose" by Saga.....a true buried gem!
ABSOLUTELY!!! YOU BEAT ME TO IT!!! Since I first heard this on the now sadly gone Arena Rock channel on Charter, I enjoyed it and eventually fell in love with the song!!! :) I was surprised that when Adam was mentioning Canadian bands, he didn't mention Saga!!! :)
Saga had a great recognizable sound and the coolest album covers
Saw them live at my high school
MTV used to play that video almost every hour when the single was first huge...
Saga has a bunch of good albums.
"On the Loose" is one of the best rock songs I've EVER heard!!! A truly epic song that deserves sooo mouch more attention that it gets!!! :(
1)Why Me by Planet P Project
2)China by the Red Rockers
3)Never Say Never by Romeo Void
4)Lunatic Fringe by Red Rider
5)What About Me by Moving Pictures
6)Twilight Zone by Golden Earring
7)Radioactive by the Firm
8)What Do All The People Know by the Monroes
9)Just Got Lucky by the Jo Boxers
10)Computer One by Dear Enemy
I love the Red Rockers! China and Good as Gold! A great over all, well produced album.
And Radioactive! Yes. Also Satisfaction Guaranteed!
You number two and three are gems for sure...but Twilight Zone, thankfully, is played very often.
Bertie Higgins "Key Largo"
Information Society "What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)"
Eddie Money "I Wanna Go Back"
Red Rider "Lunatic Fringe"
F. R. David "Words"
I wanna go back is that song that is uptempo but quite sad and has brought me to tears before , it's so good! Great choice
"I Wanna Go Back" (1986) is "Feel It Again" (1985) by Honeymoon Suite but slowed down!!! Listen to the main guitar riff and chorus for both songs back to back!!! It is too similar reaching plagiarism territory!!! :(
@@tyger813 You are actually quite right. They do both sound the same. I just noticed it not too long ago. This is going to be interesting to see how Professor is going to talk about this.
I think Bertie Higgins' "Just Another Day In Paradise" and "When You Fall In Love" are both just as good as "Key Largo." I had to play "Key Largo" on the radio many times, but the program director said no to those other two great songs. I never understood the popularity of that Information Society song; it sounded like a Thompson Twins reject to me. The Red Rider song is good, I even heard it on college radio.
Love INSOC.
I was named after Rick Springfield.
Call this partiality, I don't care...but, according to me, Rick Springfield's the coolest rockstar you'll ever see. So laid back, so chilled out yet a mastermind behind such groovy hits, from the 80's!
Rick Springfield's Love Somebody's such an underrated track!
Man, the Thompson Twins are so underrated and had so many great hits.
They were shit! I'm so glad they have been forgotten and no longer played.
I NEVER about hear them anymore! If you look at their Greatest Hits...you'll be surprised how many songs you know.
"Life In A Northern Town" by the Dream Academy, "Walk On Water" by Eddie Money, "The Walls Came Down" by The Call, and "When it's Over" by Loverboy. This Loverboy track never gets played anymore. It has maybe the only 4 verse intro ever, made up of 22 lines before you hear the 1st chorus. I love "I Feel It Again" thanks for the shout out. I knew every word to every song of Honeymoon Suite's first 4 albums. A tragically overlooked 80s rock band.
Rick has always been one of my favorites from the 80s and a very entertaining and genuine individual.
“My Ever Changing Moods” The Style Council and “Tempted” by Squeeze. “My Ever Changing Moods” has a brilliant, infectious melody. Paul Weller went all out when he arranged that song. Paul Carrack wrote and sang “Tempted” for Squeeze during his brief stint with the band. I am pretty sure “Tempted” gets more air play now compared to back when it was released.
Todd Humphrey Two fantastic choices
Paul Carrack sang Tempted for Squeeze. That dude was all over the place in the '80s. Vastly underappreciated.
Big country. In the big country.
Naked eyes- promises, promises.
That’s my song 🤪
How funny I have been listening to Naked Eyes and Outfeild for the last two weeks.
YEEESSSSSSS!!! IN A BIG COUNTRY! ❤️
Also, Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order.
Naked Eyes- when the lights go out.
@@TheJIMIJAM27 where then is your flag of convinience???
I hope Professor reads these... but man, I'm going through the top songs of May 10th, 1980.. and #2 is "ride like the wind' by Christopher cross, AMAZING intro, love the backup vocals with Michael McDonald, this song deserved to reach #1, however, Blondie and 'Call Me' kept it out . . . This is one of my forgotten 80s tunes that you just gotta go back, even if just for the intro....
I've had The Captain Of Her Heart on 45 since it was a minor hit back in '86...it's been a bonafide classic for years...."Feel It Again" from Honeymoon Suite was definitely a good song, should have been bigger but there were just too many awesome songs on the radio in early '86...
What you're doing is so important and great...thanks for your hard work professor.
HEY! What about "Life In A Northern Town-The Dream Academy"????? A very lost gem, indeed!!!
The Gap Band- Burn rubber
Exactly. I have the original 45.
Definitely!
"Captain of Her Heart" was a staple of smooth jazz radio. I heard in played all the time on The Wave in L.A., up until smooth jazz ceased being a viable format roughly a decade ago. Incredible, unique record. Never heard anything that sounds quite like it.
People forget how huge the Thompson Twins were for a while. I remember trying to get home in L.A. one day after work in 1985 and being stuck in traffic around the Hollywood Bowl. The reason? The Thompson Twins were performing that night, and they basically brought Hollywood to a standstill.
Some more forgotten 80's gems:
1. Ray Parker, Jr. - "The Other Woman" - Your mention of Rick Springfield, a guy who had a TON of hits in the 80's, but whose legacy in the minds of a lot of the general public is reduced to only one song ("Jessie's Girl"), got me thinking about another guy in the same boat: Ray Parker, Jr. Despite his impressive string of hits, "Ghostbusters" is the only thing you ever hear by him anymore. The guy was a major, major star in the early 80's, and a hugely talented guitarist, writer and producer. "The Other Woman" is one of the best things he ever did: the perfect blend of pop, R&B and rock.
2. Natalie Cole - "Jump Start" - This was the song that brought her back from oblivion, the first hit single off her "Everlasting" album. The second single, "I Live For Your Love" remains a love-song staple, and most people remember the third single, her cover of "Pink Cadillac", but "Jump Start" seems to have fallen down the memory hole. It's Natalie-freaking-Cole, so of course the vocal performance is incredible, and the song itself is pretty great.
3. Bourgeois Tagg - "I Don't Mind at All". I don't know anything about Bourgeois Tagg, I don't even know how to pronounce "Bourgeois", but I've always loved this song, even though it wasn't a huge hit (barely made the Top 40). It's so short and simple, and it contains one of my all-time favorite lines: "Several years ago, I said goodbye to my own sanity."
4. Barry Manilow - "When October Goes". I hate Barry Manilow as much as the next guy (kidding, but kinda not kidding), but when he ditched the tired formula and stopped trying to desperately top the charts, he came up with a winner. He's not my favorite vocalist, but he's never sounded better, and the song itself is a thing of timeless beauty.
5. Culture Club - "Move Away". After the serious misstep of their third album, "Waking Up With the House on Fire", followed by a slew of bad publicity due to Boy George's very public battle with drug addiction, it wasn't looking good for Culture Club. And ultimately, it wasn't good. They managed to eke out one more not-very-well-received album before totally imploding, but it included this gem, which was their last hit in the U.S. It's as catchy and fun as any of their better-remembered classics.
Very nice call on "The Other Woman"! I used to love that one when I was like 14 and well before the days of Ghostbusters, but had totally totally forgotten about it. You nailed it with your desription of the perfect blend. AND it gets topped off with some scintillating sax work. Just dropped it into my 80's playlist on Spotify. Thanks!
Excellent selection. I'd also like to add Don't Talk To Strangers by Rick Springfield. I actually don't recall hearing this back in the day, but only noticed it while listening to an 80's radio channel. It's definitely got an 80's groove, and I can't believe it took me decades to notice it.
Feel It Again is such an underrated song ... another great five. Great channel ... keep up the great job
Couldn't wait to buy the vinyl when it came out in '86. The whole album is still amazing and timeless today.
I so love Feel It Again, massive guitar, soaring solo, great variety and transitions in the song and tught harmonies. Thanks for bringing it up on your show.
Thanks for the love of Honeymoon Suite. The Big Prize is a great album. In fact, I'd love to see you do a video highlighting underrated/overlooked 80's albums. Here are some that I would include if I did such a list:
Honeymoon Suite--Big Prize
AC/DC--Flick of the Switch
Midnight Dynamite--Kix
Agreed, it should have been a massive hit, but the video was horrible!
Great song
Captain of Her heart has GOT to be one of my all time faves! Can listen to it over, and over, and over....muwah!!
Great 'Blue' album too. Smooth Jazz at its' awesome best...

5 Forgotten 80s gems from the UK:
1 Another Lover - Giant Steps
2 Long Hot Summer- The Style Council
3 The Honeythief - Hipsway
4 Cuddly Toy - Roachford
5 Heaven Help Me - Deon Estus
I saw George Michael in concert around 1990 or 1991, and Deon Estus was already back to being his bassist, only a year or two removed from his big hit.
@@ezwriter5589 - My sister won tickets to see George Michael back around 87 or 88 in Vancouver from our local radio station in Bellingham, WA. She took my other sister with her. In the beginning, they both weren't huge fans of him in the beginning. But, they talk about this concert all the time. The rode a bus from Bellingham with a bunch of screaming girls, and had such a good time at the concert. My sister bought so much gear too. She sported it all the time. But, probably my favorite Wham song is actually Edge of Heaven. I love how it grooves with Spandau Ballet's Communication.
@@islandbee '87-'88 would have been George Michael at the very peak of his success. I've always thought there was something special about seeing somebody when they're at their very peak...the excitement of the crowd is palpable and it creates an electric atmosphere. No wonder your sisters had such a great time.
The tour I saw was kind of strange. It was promoted as strictly a "covers" tour: George Michael singing his favorite songs by other artists. Some friends of mine had scored some free tickets and invited me along. It was at the Inglewood Forum in L.A. The show was great, and he actually did throw in quite a few of his own songs in between all the covers...but it was that "Listen Without Prejudice" period, where he was taking pains to be taken more seriously as an artist and wasn't appearing in his own videos, so it didn't have much of that "screaming girls" vibe to it.
@@ezwriter5589 - And it was an awesome album too. The Freedom song with all the super models in the video 😍 The 80s mega music stars were just great. Musically talented with creativity.
I still listen to Cuddly Toy pretty regularly. I think I still have the cassingle.
Nile Rodgers - you should do an entire episode on his influence
Yes, indeed!
I really loved the Motels back in the day. Not really hidden gems, their songs were fairly well known but an underrated band imo
Suddenly Last Summer, Only the Lonely and Shame
@@nicolesaunders2312 good stuff!!
"Footsteps", best Motels song ever but sorryly underestimated
I too get carried back by Suddenly Last Summer
It's criminal that nobody ever lists "Take The L" when they talk about Martha Davis & The Motels.
Back in 1999 I bought an 80s compilation CD solely for "The Captain of Her Heart".
Heaven Help Me by Deon Estus
C"est La Vie by Robbie Nevil
Don't Disturb This Groove by The System
Don't Wanna Fall in Love by Jane Child
Holding Back the Years by Simply Red
Don’t wanna fall in love was 1990
Heaven Help Me -HOT
Please don't stop!!! This channel is a MUST for us music lovers who are 70's and 80's kids!!!!!!!
I really enjoy this series and other commenters sharing their own forgotten 80s gems.
Here's a few I can think of:
Make Me Lose Control- Eric Carmen, I Get Weak- Belinda Carlisle
Bridge Of Spies- T'Pau
Stir It Up- Patti La Belle
I Want That Man- Debbie Harry
Sugar Free- Wa Wa Nee
Tell That Girl To Shut Up- Transvision Vamp
Save Some Love- Keedy
Everything Changes- Kathy Tricolli
Welcome To The Real World- Jane Child
Double!!! And that Grayson Hugh song is amazing! He has such a soulful voice.
They're my two standouts, too; and the video to "Talk It Over" was so memorable it was a hit in it's own right.
Last good decade of music...
Change my mind...
The 90s had some pretty good music but can't compete with the 80s. It has been all downhill after that.
Well the rot in quality of music started in the 1980s ... all that hair-metal/rock, cheesy synth pop, pervasiveness of Stock Aitken Waterman standardised songs, Janet Jackson type pop-r&b, not to mention proliferation of rap, yechhh :(
@@kenlee1416 that happened after 85 but 80 to 85 were so awesomely diverse , production standards that you never hear in todays music
Double's "Captain of Her Heart" got tons of airplay on the Smooth Jazz stations at the time. Love that song!
The Captain of Her Heart is one of my all time favorite songs. I love the piano part in it.
Underrated 80's songs that most likely you won't hear now on radio, forgotten songs that for me are hidden gems, personal favorites. Ian Hunter- Good man in a bad time, The Mission- Serpent Kiss, Dramarama- Anything, Anything (I'll Give You), The Jesus and Mary Chain- April Skies, Modern English- Someone's Calling, Prince- I Could never take the place of your man, Tina Turner- Back where you started :( wasn't even a hit in the USA or even around the world, #85 in Canada, Insane! One of the Living by her another favorite. She did better with her pop songs, not many of her rock songs were huge hits.
My top five of unknowns:
David + David : Welcome to the Boomtown (Whole album is a masterpiece)
Marrs : Pump Up the Volume (Varios 12" exist - all great)
Kid Creole & The Coconuts : Annie Im Not Your Daddy (Long version - irresistible early latin dance hit)
The Art of Noise : Paraniomia (Maxi) Way ahead of its time
ABBA : The Day Before You Came (Last Song they ever made together, hauntingly beautiful synthpop)
David + David : Welcome to the Boomtown (Whole album is a masterpiece) - quoted for truth!
So glad some else sares my opinion of David+David. That someone else knows who they are. . .
I totally agree about David & David. I count that album as among my favorite all time albums. David Baerwald had a couple of solo albums after this, with great songwriting, but nothing as great as this album.
There will never be another music decade like the 1980's, as it was pure magic! The ones who were lucky enough to be present, got to see the birth of all these new genre's of wonderful music, never to be duplicated again!!!! Thanks Professor!!!! We love you!!!!
My five comparable songs - 'Don't talk to strangers',Rick Springfield, 'should've known better',Jim diamond, 'invisible',Allison moyet, 'someday',Glass Tiger. 'I wanna go back',Eddie Money..
Hell yeah brother. I love this series. I hope to some day the Australian band Real Life on this list. Their song "Catch Me I'm Falling" is incredible but the only song people seem to remember is "Send Me An Angel", but even that one hardly ever gets played on 80's radio stations these days.
Good call
The Captain of Her Heart (US version) was an awesome video. All the ladies in that video 😍 I commented on Kurt Maloo's channel and he answered back. I was asking where the other version was filmed. I told him how much I loved the US version video.
Hearing The Thompson Twins in this video took me right back to when I was a kid (born in the 70's, raised in the 80's and 90's) and driving around on weekends in my mom's car, she and I finding cool activities to do to wile away the days. Windows open and the radio blasting all those awesome tunes. Good times!
Does anyone remember a Dutch band called Diesel? They only had one hit, but it was a doozy - "Sausalito Summer Night."
Here are five more underused classics. Little By Little' Robert Plant, Right On Track-The Breakfast Club, No Easy Way Out- Robert Tepper, No One Is To Blame- Howard Jones, Wouldn't It Be Good- Nik Kershaw. Whoops...that's 6.
Right On Track is totally awesome. Unfairly left behind by today's music scene.
No One is to Blame is a great song.
Love what you do. I'm a lil biased being from Philadelphia and would love you to do something on the Hooters. Eric and Rob wrote big hits in different decades and they were a staple for me growing up in the eighties. Your playlist are always great thanks!
Hooters. Good band. Surprised you didn't mention Cinderella?
Frank O'Donnell All You Zombies
And We Danced definitely stamps the passport of my life.
The whole Nervous Night album is amazing.
But I freakin’ love Satellite!!!
Opened Live Aid since it was in Philly.
I've always liked "Lay Your Hands On Me," "Doctor, Doctor," and "If You Were Here" more than "Hold Me Now." "Lay Your Hands On Me" is used as background music in the movie "Perfect." Thompson Twins also did the title song for the Tom Hanks/Jackie Gleason film "Nothing in Common," which I've always liked.
Greetings from Greece Professor !!! Great chanel , great video !!!
I'm throwing 5 forgotten songs from that era :
1.Wax - Right between the eyes
2.Century - Lover why
3.Falco - Rock me Amadeus
4.Opus - Life is life
5.Elephant-I don't wanna loose you now.
Pretty much forgotten but definetely 80"s culture ...
i feel the same way about captain of your heart. it's trance like. i've never stopped following rick springfield, state of the heart is my favorite from '85.
I forgot Honeymoon Suite. That is still a great song. Could you give some love to Missing Persons?
Giuffria - Call To the Heart
Kim Mitchell - Go For Soda
Archangel - Tragedy
Van Zant - I'm A Fighter
Little America - Walk on Fire
GTR - When the Heart Rules The Mind
Emerson Lake and Powell -Touch and Go
Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth
Kings of the Sun - Serpentine
Marty Balin - Hearts
Glass Moon - On a Carousel
Diesel - Sauselito Summernights
Orion The Hunter - So You Ran
Tommy Shaw - Girls With Guns
Paul Davis - 65 Love Affair
Aldo Nova - Monkey on Your Back
Honeymoon Suite are from near me here in Canada. They're from Niagara Falls, Ontario, hence the origin of their name Honeymoon Suite, being from colloquially, the honeymoon capital
A Rick Springfield song that I've always liked is "Love Somebody" from Hard To Hold. I don't hear that one on radio at all anymore. I don't think I've heard it on the radio in over thirty years.
Another great Thompson Twins song that's gotten lost is "You Take Me Up."
Love Somebody has one of my favorite guitar solos, and thru looking it up I discovered Tim Pierce and his great guitar channel. He played with Rick a lot in thise days, check him out!
Here's some other GREAT, but under-rated 80s gems, IMO:
Motortown - The Kane Gang
The One You Love - Glenn Frey
The Night Owls - Little River Band
Sausalito Summer Nights - Diesel
I Love You - Climax Blues Band
Don't Walk Past - Blue Peter
Stay the Night - Chicago

So in Love - OMD
Rumours - Timex Social Club

More Than Just the Two of Us - Sneaker
You Win Again - Bee Gees
Deep and Wide and Tall - Aztec Camera
You Owe Me Some Kind of Love - Chris Isaak
Life's What You Make It - Talk Talk
I Don't Mind At All - Bourgeois Tagg
Walk Away - Information Society
The Mayor of Simpleton - XTC
I'm in Love with a German Film Star - The Passions
When I'm with You - Sparks
No Such Thing - Annette Ducharme
Motortown by The Kane Gang is great as is What Time Is It?, Closest Thing to Heaven. Miracle is their excellent 1987 album.
Fellow Kitchenware record label mates Hurrah released a great song called 'Sweet Sanity' in 1987. They were tipped for great success in the UK but it never happened. I think the song was a minor hit.
Love and Pride by KING?
Heck yes, Rick Springfield!!! That whole album is amazing!!!
I’m really enjoying these hidden gems videos. Keep them coming!
Terrance Trent D'arby should make one of these lists. I never hear his songs played on any 80's throwback channels.
i´m agree with you..there are lots of artits from eighties , more than we know. I remember a lot: Talk Talk, Visage, Ultravox, OMD, Alphaville. ABC, But others like: Nicole McCloud, Kano, Sandra, Berlin, Level 42 or Blow Monkeys...etc
I've always believed that music has the ability to evoke every emotion we mere mortals are capable of experience.
And I LOVE hearing such great songs again and being reminded of what the music meant to me so long ago.
THANK YOU PROFESSOR!!!
The captain of her heart, one of the greatest songs ever made! I listen to it all the time even to this day, so relaxing! Takes me back to the mid-eighties right before it all went down the dumper...
This is a great assortment.
Gotta agree with other comments that Rick Springfield is so underrated.
Nice to see the Canadian bands. Honeymoon Suite are great band my favourite is Burning in Love
Checkout Platinum Blonde.
The Thompson Twins had the perfect early 80s look and sound.
Always cool seeing your albums in the background. I'm seeing The River - amazing fantastic album
5) I know there's something going on-Frida. 4) Electric Blue-Ice House. 3)Love changes everything-Climie Fisher 2)The promise-When In Rome. 1)Back To Life-Soul II Soul
Dave Netherton I did know that friend lol 👍🏻
These songs were not just of their time - they were beyond their time. A fine selection - passionately conveyed.
Hey Adam great list.....but how about Crazy by Icehouse and The Promise by When in Rome
Can’t forget the Icehouse song “Electric Blue”, co-written by John Oates.
@@davidrosato864 I did forget about it but I loved it so much!!
You know, Professor--you and I are on the same music wavelength. Especially when it comes to rock. You have featured the AOR gems (Survivor, Honeymoon Suite) on this channel that have been my favorites and you get why they're so good. They hit the ear just right and they should have been more celebrated at the time. I'll bet you're gonna feature Kansas' "Play the Game Tonight" as a song that should have been bigger than it was too--so underrated.
Oh, yeah, Rick Springfield. I will listen to anything he sings. Love him.
GREAT picks. I love all of the artists you have mentioned in this segment. I still listen to them regularly on my custom Spotify playlist. "Captain of Her Heart" has always been a favorite. It holds a special place with me. Rick Springfield concerts are among some of the funnest concerts I have attended. Just a great performer and all around artist. Such a great body of work! Hard to choose a favorite. Also, I agree that, " Feel it Again" is definitely overlooked and Honeymoon Suite is underrated. And Thompson Twins... oh, my heart... such awesome teenage memories. ;) Thanks for creating videos with fantastic content! Keep up the good work!
I remember going to a Rick Springfield show with opening band The Motels. 🎶 We were laughed at by some classmate dudes, even as trumpet band fags. However, that show in 1986 had more teenage cute girls than I ever knew existed! Me and my buddy got more dates and phone numbers from that show than we could afford. 🤪 I still have women that are friends from that show today. A superman game changer! The best money ever spent on a concert! I owe Rick a BIG Thank You! 🤜🤛
“Lights Out” by Peter Wolf. He also had hits with “I Need You Tonight” and “Come As You Are” about the same time in the 80s, but I think “Lights Out” is great! The soul that surfaces around the 3:20 mark in the song is awesome and always moves me!
Will Chavez yes!
Lights out! Blast blast blast! Lights out! Lol awesome
you're spot on about the end of the song. it moves me too. i love that song
Lights Out...great choice.
Great stuff. Love your passion and really enjoy your channel
Matt Bianco. 'More than I can bear.'
Pop perfection.
Bridge to Your Heart by Wax
Yes!
I’ve recently discovered your channel here on CZcams, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed what I’ve seen and heard. I would like to pick your brain and ask you what are your best break-up songs of the 80’s? (My favorite one of all time is Paul Carrick’s Don’t Shed a Tear)
The Salt In My Tears by Martin Briley is a pretty firm send-off.
Paul Carrack When You Walk In The Room.
Omg, I had that Rick Springsteen album, 12” of Captain of her heart, The Thompson Twins we’re very underrated, their 1st album is a classic.
Be Near Me is my dad's cell phone ring tone. Lol when he gets a call, when we're hanging out, I start dancing...until he answers it and I get disappointed. 😅
Out of the 5, I find Rick Springfield's Affair of the Heart the best but feel indifferent about him taking and reconstructing someone else's creation as his own, guess I don't know the full story from the short interview snippet included in this video but will leave it with that. The most surprising to me is Honeymoon Suite as I had never heard of them before but ultimately that their new song (thanks for dropping a mention so we could check it out) feels eerily fresh with 80s remnants being played by a now much older band, though I wouldn't have guessed that had I not seen the video, it sounds young and fresh. I like the new Tell Me What You Want more than Feel It Again, it feels refined .Feel it Again while decent and packing some nice licks feels to be missing the essential catchy hook for me to ever want to hear it again, my only take away is his voice.
I'm sure Talk it Over by Grayson Hugh made it onto a lot of cassette tapes given to girls in the 80s with hopes to resolve their relationship woes. Long Live the 80s and flippy clocks with FM alarms to wake you in the morning! Those were the days....
Anything single by the Style Council, Marshall Crenshaw, early Simple Minds, the Long Ryders, Siouxisie Sue, the Three O' Clock...
Once again, you brought back songs that I love but hadn't heard or thought about in years. So first off, thank you.
There are 3 you touched on here that instantly took me back.
1. Captain of Her Heart. A gorgeous song that features heavy use of my 2 favorite instruments. Piano and saxophone. Captain is the perfect marriage of the two.
2. Talk It Over. I had that CD and if I remember correctly, it was loaded with some great songs! I think I have to dig that one up and revisit it.
3. Feel It Again. I could not tell you when I last heard that one. At first, I thought the title sounded familiar, but I was not placing it in my head. But after hearing the snippet you played, I was like "Oh man, I remember that one!!" I'm pretty sure I either bought the single or the album (the album cover seemed very familiar). I think that may be the one I revisit first.
Again. Thanks for what you do! Now its time to listen to these hidden gems . . . 😁
Awesome! More earworms. After discovering the others, I had "I Can Dream About You" stuck in my head for literally days.
Rick Springfield - "Affair of The Heart". Excellent song from an excellent album; Living In Oz. Rick is massively under appreciated as a songwriter. It is a shame most only think of Jessie's Girl or General Hospital when his name is mentioned. He has so much more to offer in his catalog of albums.
Thompson Twins - "Lay Your Hands" - good choice. I was hoping you didn't mean the shit Bon Jovi song.
Double - "Captain of Her Heart" - nah, pass. I really don't miss hearing that one. It is one of those that received TOO MUCH airplay.
Honeymoon Suite - "Feel It Again" is a great track. The Big Prize was an ok album, but I preferred their debut with New Girl Now, Burning In Love, and Wave Babies.
Never heard the Grayson Hugh track. Probably because I couldn't handle any more of the generic, assembly line, clichè crap on the radio towards the end of the '80s. That aside, his vocal is very 'Sam Cooke'.
I actually heard someone on the radio not too long ago refer to rick Springfield as a one hit wonder and I thought are you freaking high? I must have had at least four or five tapes of his and although hard to hold movie was not all that good the soundtrack was killer.
Volume 4 needs to include Saga's On the Loose... Rarely heard song but a great one!
Honeymoon Suite! What a band! So many great songs including Wounded, Tears On The Page, Once The Feeling, Words In The Wind, All Along You Knew, Lethal Weapon, Bad Attitude, Love Changes Everything, New Girl Now, Stay In The Light and of course the great hits Feel It Again & What Does It Take!
These guys have been incredibly overlooked! Such talent with great, powerful songs that touched my soul & gave my heart a place to go!
It's great to see Grayson Hugh getting some love here. I watched him perform Talk it Over and a ton of other songs at a small venue here not too long ago... just him, a piano, and his wife singing harmonies. He still sounds amazing.
