This is tricky. While the gastric bypass does help with losing weight, you still need to make drastic lifestyle changes for it to work. Since you no longer use your stomach for digestion, it limits what you can eat. She structured her whole life around the surgery and now she’s being told all that effort made her sick. While a lot of her decision is vanity, she also has to grapple with the fact that she made those sweeping life changes for nothing. It would feel like wasted effort and time. It would feel like she put herself through all that and would end up with nothing to show for it. The correct decision is to reverse the surgery and return to a high-carb, high-sugar diet, but admitting that would mean having to accept that she wasted all that time and effort. Also, of course she wouldn’t eat that cake. The fork was just in House’s mouth!

Here’s a fact about that cake. At least the hospital my sister works at and mainly go to for drop offs (paramedic) has a slice that’s about 750 calories. Great meal for paramedics when you haven’t had the time to eat anything and are doing a 12hrs shift.

My point though was, if you watch your calorie intake, you can eat whatever you like, just don't eat over maintenance and you'll be fine. Not saying it's healthy, just that you can do it. If you walk 20,000 steps a day, you can eat a lot more.
She already does exercise a lot as a fitbess coach, eats very little and is fin but not skinny. If she eats more she will gain weight. Also, the thing about "calories in, calories out" is that you body has yo let go of the calories that went in which depends off you metabolism. Some people can easily used their stored calories, other not so much. Personally I know that if I want to work off a slice off cake, I have to do it IMMEDIATELY, if I wait even 10 minutes the energy goes into storage and it will be a much more grueling experience to get it out.

I have something similar. High carb diets are the worst. I want a freaking salad. If I dont have tons of carbs like potatoes all the time, I blister in any light, I have uncontrollable weeping, my blood pressure goes through the roof and my heart will race. I hate the discourse around this episode because it's not just about being "healthy". Yes the patient is portrayed as a hypocrit, but the reality is that fat people are treated poorly and people don't care why you're fat, only that you are. If she gained weight again it would help her condition, but it would also mean social consequences the rest of her life. I am a whopping 180lbs at 19. I’ll be honest, most of my weight is at my legs and stomach, and not an ounce near my chest. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I should be 180lbs, and I did eat a bunch of horrible things between 15-19. I don’t exercise that much, but I at least try. And I know when and what I should and shouldn’t be eating. But I slip up anyways. Those cravings can get extremely bad, and it sucks really bad when you look at someone who’s better than you doing whatever and not facing any consequences. It’s so annoying and frustrating. On my college campus I’m seeing girls at 18-21 and more only barely touching 150-190. I seriously don’t know how they do it. There’s also other girls that are definitely really far gone at 290 and above at 18! It’s nuts! What and how is the female body supposed to be rationed to? What says what’s normal? I say to hell with everything! Eat how you please, exercise how you please, but know this: balance is key! I’m seriously eating green grapes right now and drinking home mixed chocolate milk and I know that’s pushing 300+ calories but I don’t care! People can have the best of both worlds, no problem, but you must know when too much is too much. Only eat to the point you’re satisfied. You could have a whole bowl of fruit and be satisfied, or half a box of fries from McDonald’s and still be satisfied. Listen to your body! You will forever be happy when you start listening to your body! No snacks in between, no need for outside things, just listen to your body. Not your brain, your body. Alright, sayonara everyone!

I hate the discourse around this episode because it's not just about being "healthy". Yes the patient is portrayed as a hypocrit, but the reality is that fat people are treated poorly and people don't care why you're fat, only that you are. If she gained weight again it would help her condition, but it would also mean social consequences the rest of her life. Not to mention a lifetime of worse medical care for any other condition she might have as doctors have a well documented habbit of dismissing and undertreating overweight patients. This is also a character who was offered a lifetime of pain/a poorly managed condition versus the consequences of being percieved as unhealthy and immediatley knew what the less painful option was. People take the wrong lesson from this episode.
I am a whopping 180lbs at 19. I’ll be honest, most of my weight is at my legs and stomach, and not an ounce near my chest. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I should be 180lbs, and I did eat a bunch of horrible things between 15-19. I don’t exercise that much, but I at least try. And I know when and what I should and shouldn’t be eating. But I slip up anyways. Those cravings can get extremely bad, and it sucks really bad when you look at someone who’s better than you doing whatever and not facing any consequences. It’s so annoying and frustrating. On my college campus I’m seeing girls at 18-21 and more only barely touching 150-190. I seriously don’t know how they do it. There’s also other girls that are definitely really far gone at 290 and above at 18! It’s nuts! What and how is the female body supposed to be rationed to? What says what’s normal? I say to hell with everything!
Eat how you please, exercise how you please, but know this: balance is key! I’m seriously eating green grapes right now and drinking home mixed chocolate milk and I know that’s pushing 300+ calories but I don’t care! People can have the best of both worlds, no problem, but you must know when too much is too much. Only eat to the point you’re satisfied. You could have a whole bowl of fruit and be satisfied, or half a box of fries from McDonald’s and still be satisfied. Listen to your body! You will forever be happy when you start listening to your body! No snacks in between, no need for outside things, just listen to your body. Not your brain, your body.

Society says it’s better to be unhealthy than overweight. Most men prefer women to be unhealthy than overweight (no matter what they say publicly). It also causes depression and other health problems. You can get turned down for jobs, ignored as a valuable person, thought to be lazy and dirty. And sooooo many other things. So ya, she worked so hard to change all that but she still relives that nightmare every day on the inside, she’s not gonna just celebrate and eat cake.

Reality is this: Your body is 20% diet, 80% exercise. Honestly. Eat a relatively balanced diet and that’s good. But if you over train and overwork yourself, you’re unhealthy. If you sit around all day, you’re unhealthy. Your physical health has much more to do with keeping your body engaged and physical. Do maintain a balanced, healthy diet. But realize that playing video games 14 hours a day or never going for a walk is harming you a lot more than pizza and beer night ever will.
I wish I had the genetic trait of converting body fat to muscle, or needing a high carb high glucose diet. That would be the best.
