The first time you feel a rib crack during CPR is a bit nauseating, but I always tell my students during training that we are doing CPR because the patient is effectively dead. You cannot hurt a patient worse than dead, everything else we can fix later.
My instructor also taught us that. I think that thought will really help me if I ever have to perform CPR irl. I've been part of our company's first aid team for almost a decade, never had a CPR case in those years. During our last yearly refresher course the company had hired some actors playing different scenarios. Like a hypoglycemic diabetic or a person who'd fallen of a ladder and was showing signs of shock while having no external wounds. I had the gasping heart attack case. We were (of course) instructed to not do full CPR on the actors, but bend our elbows instead. I placed my hands on her chest and I was taken aback for a second by the fact that her chest felt soft and warm. And I was confused by my response, because of course a real body feels different than a plastic dummy... I also had to overcome a bit of embarrassment for the fact that my hands touched her breasts during CPR (even though I'm a woman myself) and cutting her clothing and bra away when my colleague arrived with the practice AED. The actress told me afterwards that this is exactly why she participates in these trainings: so that we won't hesitate when we ever have to perform CPR on a woman and just do everything we need to do as quickly as we can.
I’m currently recovering from rib fractures. It sucks, but it’s incomparable to death. Go ahead and break our ribs!
@Royce Tira I have. This isn’t my first rib fracture.
Thank you for making this point. I had taken CPR numerous times but was not sure I could actually do it because of the rib breaking until an instructor said, "you don't do CPR until there is no breathing or pulse, so the person is dead - you aren't going to make them any worse." That was a paradigm shift for me.
Yes.
What baffles me is that none of the hospitals were charged for covering up after a serial killer.
That's because, terrifyingly, they didn't do anything illegal.
Ikr it's terrible
@@werm3169 cover up crimes in a hospital isn't ilegal? I dont think so..
It’s a business, not about genuine care for people
What I don't get is why they didn't fire him on a technicality? Like "we've received a lot of complaints (even if it's a lie), so we have to fire you" . Were they afraid of him? Did they care about their reputation more than the lives of others?
Eddie is one of the few people who can curse and still look innocent while doing it.
He's so cute too. 😉🤩😛
i am a fucking nurse
Actual nurse here (NICU Flight Transport). Yeah. Nursing's hard and being decisive in a crisis is even harder. Sooooo...don't stab yourself with the dirty needle is a Life Goal. Other than that...don't serial kill? Yeah. That one.
Good goals 😁
… yep, definitely a crappy care plan. Try doing an I/O in IMC. Now that’s magical! 🧸
I have a question. Is it better to just keep doing the "Stayin Alive" compressions on the chest and blowing air into the lungs every few seconds or just keep doing the compressions without the air?
Given some of the shit nurses have had to deal with these last 2 years, I would not blame them one bit.
@@runnergo1398 You don't have to do mouth to mouth if you don't want to. It's still have a higher chance of success, keeping them alive, than not doing it at all. Make sure you still count the 2 breath between 30 compression even if there's no mouth to mouth.
For me, the film exposed the terrible American healthcare industry where a single mother with cardiomyopathy, in need of a heart transplant, must keep her condition a secret while she awaits the months-long period before her insurance kicks in.
Yeah for me, the film was a scratching assessment of the US healthcare industry which seems far more interested in money and reputation than you know, the actual care and health of its patients.
I also couldn’t believe a nurse had to wait a year to get her health insurance. I kept thinking watching the film, surely those who work in healthcare would be entitled to it straightaway.
@@gina5432112345unfortunately that's not the case

"The banality of evil" psychopaths get away with shit by exploiting human nature. We all think we're difficult to fool, and that any attempt to fool us would be complex. . . So vile people find the simplest way to do vile things and then the survivours are either too embarrassed or too far in denial to speak up.

just saw this last night. REALLY good emotional movie. very tense.
pure ACTING GOLD.
He was unbelievably good in THE DANISH GIRL. Wow!
Fairly accurate what he said about breaking a rib. That was quite an immersion he went through.
He and Jessica Chastain were magnificent, watched it last night an incredible story which tho I know the ending will watch again. Don't miss the understated acting of Redmayne and Chastain.
Anybody who has read anything about the investigation/case knows the "ending." 🙄
As a nurse who has done CPR multiple times…..you do break ribs. And if they are really really old…crack the sternum a bit!
it's very sad, but it must be done. You do what many won't be able to do day - in and day - out. Keep making a difference!
True, my first CPR was on a geriatric patient and i can hear a distinct sound and sensation when a rib broke as i apply the compression
He's right about CPR. I'd had classes, but I was not ready for how hard I had to press, how long I'd have to continue until help arrived, or the weird crunchy sound of doing it right. My suggestion if you're a little older is to keep up the cardio and get a home defibrillator. Someone's life might depend on it.

Yes CPR is quite the workout. I had to do it for 6 minutes to pass my exam and I was quite exhausted after that. So Im really happy that wr now have a network of civilians with a valid CPR certificate in my country. When you call an ambulance the dispatcher also activates this civilian network. The 10 people closest to the location get an alarm from the app. 5 get the request to go immediately to the victim. 5 are asked to first get the defibrillator closest to the victim. If you are able to go you respond "Yes" and go. If not enough people respond, they alert 10 more.
I really like this system, because it means that the victim and the person helping him or her gets help quickly. Also there are more people present who know CPR, so you can take turns untill the ambulance arrives. And most of the time a defibrillator arrives before the ambulance which saves minutes and lives. In rural areas it can still take a few minutes before the first helper arrives, but even then its reassuring to know that more help is on the way than just the ambulance.
@@rvdb7363 That sounds like a really neat system.

The thing about CPR being shown on TV and in movies, the actors HAVE to bend their arms so that they avoid breaking the other actor’s ribs.
But yeah - real-life CPR will probably break ribs if done correctly

Watched the movie. Loved it. As RN, labor and delivery, I remember having to register the IV bags in PIXUS as a nurse but this case happened a few decades ago so maybe they didn't do that then? In any case really spooky.
Not every hospital puts their fluids in the Pyxis. We didn’t at my hospital. It also depends on the unit, I believe. I’m not in a big city though, so I think it just depends!
Man I love the British self deprecating humour. How can you not like someone that doesn't themselves too seriously.
The Good Nurse is great too and terrifying that it's true.
The US health care system is terrifying
Interesting, that the CPR stuff seemed quite new to both. Over here (in Germany) you have to go through basic first aid training, including CPR, if you want to make your drivers license. Therefore most adults have done and been told this at some point.
I found that strange too. He was like a little kid describing what you do in primary school. "We colour pictures and play outside!" Seems crazy he didn't know the beegees reference or the rib breaking bit.
Eddie is the most adorable, the best, the cutest creation of the creator
I told a former boss I liked getting a woman to assist in IT helpline. Most of the women would either have a fast solution, or would be quick to put in a ticket if it were going to be more complicated. Ninety percent of the men would dither and waste time. A man with good knowledge would cut to the chase. This gets to the heart of the decisiveness nearly anyone should show in whatever job they are doing.
More than 25 years ago, but I remember cracking the first rib during CPR.
I enjoyed this interview. I rarely see Eddie doing talk shows and I've been an admirer of his since he was in "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" with Gemma Arterton. He's always good and I really wanted to slap him when he played Angel Clare. I get the impression I'll want to slap him again for the character he plays in "The Good Nurse." 🙂
I was 17 when I started as nursing student taking classes in high school and right into nursing school when months of graduation. Became a NICU nurse and pediatrics. I was working a Friday night swing ICU float and the patient went into cardiac arrest. It was not an easy night...we worked on him fir hours it seemed until his doctor would come to pronounce him. French Hospital .
😢
Don’t ever worry about breaking someone’s ribs during CPR. You’re trying to make their heart beat for them from the outside, that’s very hard. And broken ribs are more common than people imagine, and it’s preferable to have broken ribs than not having blood circulate to your brain 😉
I saw Eddie as Emcee in Cabaret in London and he was LIGHTS OUT. Just stunning. Such an incredible actor AND vocalist.

Queen's Another One Bites the Dust works the rhyme too... would you prefer that instead? 😁
Post-op RN here. The new song is Baby Shark. The paramedics taught me that one, and I hum it when I practice CPR. Yeah... that one makes me inappropriately giggle.
@@IrishTactical I imagine some parents might consider just dying instead of hearing baby shark (but luckily someone who needs CPR probably isn't conscious to make any such decision).

Not almost break ribs, CPR can quite often break ribs...

My favorite of his movies is The Yellow Handkerchief with William Hurt.
This is an important movie for the healthcare profession. Right now this is not an isolated incident of systems failing to protect healthcare workers and patients. What is very few and far between is a nurse actively choosing on purpose to harm people. People get hurt because of system failures. Bc the healthcare model is profit over people and yes those people do include the nurses and other healthcare workers. I remind you of the Vanderbilt hospital scapegoat corruption in bed with the Tennessee district attorney who DID criminally convict a nurse. Radonda Vaught did everything right and the hospital did not. This was a sentinel even for most of us in healthcare. #WeAreAllRadonda sparked 4 million and counting healthcare workers of all levels to really push for organizing and protesting for SAFETY of themselves but more importantly for patients lives. Staffing saves lives and when the healthcare workers aren't safe is it really that hard to imagine that the patient (EVERY PATIENT) is unsafe. Yup talking to you, everyone who reads this. Who would want to work in that toxic environment!?! Nobody that's who. If y'all don't get it together and take care of the healthcare workers esp ones who are now disabled by covid, who do you think is gonna take care of you when you need it. #hospiceCNA #phleblife #zebratales.
