  • Here's a question that came from nowhere but that I wanted to make a video on nonetheless, how would Touhou Music sound in PAL? If you've played old games, you should know the result!
    Had plenty of fun while making this one, though it will probably seem less detailed than usual, I hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless! #touhou #東方

    I'd like to think that I'm used to Touhou music being changed, but when it is just a slowdown it kinda hurts my brain.
    reminds me of an underpowered PC slowing down games.

    • @Surnist
      @Surnist  Před 3 lety +20

      You should see what an underpowered PC-98 can do with the games, then. 😃
      For real though, changing the tempo isn't the problem, it probably has something to do with the composition. Some of those songs weren't meant to be slowed down at all.

      I only felt the difference with pc games

  • @Altiami
    @Altiami Před 3 lety +54

    TH05 and earlier would indeed play in the format presented here, with only the tempo slowed down, since their music drivers read from a sequence on a regular cycle. However, peculiarly, since the games from TH06 onwards use sample-based music formats, they not only would have a slower tempo, but their pitch would be lower as well. That'd be a bit more than three semitones lower (like going from C to A). I tried it for myself, and it's rather interesting!
    And yes, I'm aware that TH02 and 06-08 (and 09's trial) had options for MIDI, and since those were sequenced, they also would play with only tempo slowed. Furthermore, the PC-98's soundcards sometimes supported sample-based sounds, but Touhou never used any.

    • @Surnist
      @Surnist  Před 3 lety +4

      I didn't know that! Though I thought only the tempo would be affected due to how it only did affect the tempo for older cartridges.
      Even then, I suppose it still gives an idea of how it would've sounded.

    Of course that wouldn't have been the case with the Windows game's music, because those have streamed PCM-audio... but still, nice video.

      @Surnist  Před 3 lety +3

      Of course, it wouldn't have been possible with Windows audio, but I still wanted to do it with some other songs out of curiosity.

      It didn't output NTSC, but Japan in general was both equipped with 60 and 50 hertz frequencies, although all appliances were set to use NTSC, though it's true that they refreshed at a rate of 56,4hz. But for the PC-98 music, since they are directly taken from Akyu's Untouched Score, they were probably re-composed to fit 60 hertz.

    the first two tracks sound alright, kind of like prefer them slowed down actually tbh, Lunate Elf and Paradise - Deep Mountain definitely should not be slowed down dear lord...Adventure of the Lovestruck Tomboy....kind of in the middle, not the worst sounding when slowed but definitely not as good as it is originally. Because Princess Inada is Scolding Me's also kind of nice when slowed down, cant say the same for At the End of Spring tho... • @Surnist
      @Surnist  Před 3 lety

      Some games were though, I know it's not the case for all of them since some were optimized. A good example of this are the Banjo-Kazooie games, which were developed by Rare and as such, they knew how to optimise things to not make them slower. Same goes for the SNES, NES and even some CD games of the sixth generation of consoles.
      The music issue was mostly fixed in the SNES era, but the PAL issue was still there. So in the great majority, we did get slower games and most times, slower or weirdly affected music.

    Honestly, the PC-98 musics sound good in PAL version. But from EoSD to the end, it all sounds so... weird. Not bad, but it's just weird

    nah I would prefer the NTSC than the PAL one... The PAL one sounds a bit off to me... As well the NTSC sounds a bit catchy and perfect for me to listen to...

      Oh definitely, but that's just a question I was asking myself, and I wanted to see how it would render. The NTSC is the original and it sounds better without a doubt.
