I don't come from a musical background, nor can I play instruments or read sheet music or interpret musical patterns, but after listening to years of Zun's soundtracks, I was never able to put it into words why I really love certain things about Zun's music.
Your videos explain it in a manner that I can finally vaguely understand, thank you so much.

I'd think ZUN's running notes are made using the arpeggiator function with his DAW, and then tweaked to his liking.

ZUN is such a fun composer. His music, while technically and theoretically surprisingly sound, has a very very charming outsider aesthetic to it, what with the midi instrumentation and just a very unique feel overall.

I love that double melody thing
Even more when he just presents the themes one by one and then slams them in your face like saying "YOU SEE? THEY WORK TOGHETHER, I TOLD YOU", like in Onigashima on the Fairyland or Lunatic Princess with that piano-trumpet combo, yet the piano is still a bit "simple".

I also love when you try to skip the music to the climax, you'll sometimes wonder how a relaxing or less tense 1 minute length changes quickly into an orgasmic climax. It's like ZUN music makes you listen to the whole piece.

I love when he uses a drum set to lead into a key change by itself. I recently bought some of his albums on iTunes and the album ver. of Necrofantasia and Frozen Capital of Eternity have my favorite instances of this! Also, No More Going Through Doors is probably one of his best compositions ever, it’s sad how under appreciated it is.

The counterpoint is easy to explain:
Just imagine you have loudest, leading , which is the singer.
    The softer is song melody.
Sometime the third one is the second singer following along, but mostly for chorus.
Counterpoint is easy to build if you consider the above characters.

I think the reason that the ARPEGGIO is so fundamental to video game music, is because it originated in 1-track and 4-track sound hardware -- the only way to get a chord (and other things going on) was for the given musical note to be interleaved with other musical notes, which means: ARPEGGIO.

Someone explain to me why pandemonic planet is so popular? Like yes it does all these great things that we love in Zun’s work, but it just sounds so amelodic. There’s nothing to follow along with, it comes off more like an ambiance than a song. Yes it does most of these techniques but it ends up sounding worse as a result. Like there are only a few Touhou songs I’d outright but say I dislike and pandemonic planet isn’t one of them (pure furies ~whereabouts of the heart and faint dream ~inanimate dream), but I’ll never understand how anyone could think of it as like, an outstanding song in the series

no ownder why Zun's music are beautiful. it because he create the game based on the music he create. i mean the first thing he make when creating touhou game is the music. not story/character/gameplay. and then later on that he create all the character/story/game based on the music.
