  • A smaller yet still pretty filled subject for you to ponder, why did some characters who used to wear purple get their colours changed?
    Hopefully you'll enjoy the potential answer! #touhou
    There might be some audio oddities, and I'm sorry in advance if they bother your experience.
    Thank you for watching, hope to see you next time!

    I remember when I was studying art, shades of Purple and Blues were used in a majority of religious art to show divinity or just a way to portray a higher power. So I suppose characters like Yukari and Kanako having different purples in their designs was a *big brain* choice from ZUN
    ...or he did it unintentionally, the drunk madman.

    • @Surnist
      @Surnist  Před 4 lety +60

      Either he did it unintentionally, which wouldn't be surprising since character design also asks for a bit of knowledge regarding art, etc. Or he knew about it, which wouldn't be surprising either, seeing the play on words that he did with Chen, Ran and Yukari.

      I think you are confusing hate with proper criticism, is a fact that he is a little bad at drawing, people just are sincere about it instead of sugarcoating. Heck, ZUN himself said the entire reason why 2hu has only girls is because he sucks at drawing male characters. But in the end, ZUN still pretty good when comes to haracter design, in other words. Why the characters wear certain colors, accessories, the whole simbolism behind their design. Plus, he is visibly improving and WBaWC is actually a significant sign of progress. We still like his drawings, we just are sincere :)

    Think this can definitely be extrapolated further, ZUN absolutely loves to play with the rainbow. For the majority of the time he simply just uses purple and the rainbow as a sign of power.
    Chen is orange, Ran is yellow/blue, Yukari is purple. In ascending order to their power and relationship to each other.
    Alice has 7 colors in her dress, and even references it in her dialogue in PCB (Silly shrine maiden, your two-colored powers are a mere 28.5714% as powerful as mine!)
    Tenshi has her "belt", which is rainbow colored. Her rival in her game being Yukari, her color scheme being blue reflects how great her power is but cut short in comparison to Yukari.
    Patchouli is the seven day magician, and her crystals all have the color of the rainbow with them.
    There's more examples of this, but these are the most prominent examples of it. ZUN simply likes his rainbows.

    The thing about Reisens redesign. I think she changes out of her shirts depending on the season, as shown in Inaba of the moon and Inaba of the earth. Sure, those comics are shaky canon-wise, but it makes sense, considering one is long-sleeved and the other is short-sleeved.

    Medicine is the absolute easiest to explain, as purple is the colour of poison in Japan. In fact, I'm surprised she's not *more* purple, as her shirt is basically black.
    You'd expect her design to either be very purple, or very white to resemble a lily of the valley.

    • @Surnist
      @Surnist  Před 4 lety +6

      Well the thing with lily of the valley is that the plant is entirely green with white buds.

    One thing I noticed about Reisen’s design changes in particular, is how we *see* that Reisen has changed herself.
    When we first encounter her, she’s wearing a black blazer with a moon pin, signalizing that she’s a Lunarian soldier, and being a big blob of dark color on a rather light palette, it takes most of the attention from her light purple hair (and as mentioned in the video, light purple symbolizes uniqueness).
    It’s as if, her identity is overshadowed by her being a Lunar Rabbit, uniformed and trained to be exactly the same as the rest.
    However, when she takes off that blazer and swaps the moon pin with a carrot one, not only does she rebel against the moon’s order as the self-proclaimed Earth Rabbit, it also makes her hair pop more on the new design, highlighting her individuality.
    As a side note, all the red in her old design became more pinkish as well. I see that as her going from aggressive to just passionate.

    You most likely covered this in some way in the video, but purple for the Japanese is a color of evil. As you mentioned for Marisa, she changed from purple to black when changing from antagonist to protagonist. Same thing can be said for Yukari and Reisen, with them becoming either playable or supporting characters.

    • @Surnist
      @Surnist  Před 4 lety

      It can be considered as a colour for evil, but the reason it is considered as such, is because this colour was used by people who had power, that were from royalty, and most of all, those who were ready to do whatever they could to fulfill their ambitions. Hence why I preferred to explain the meaning of the colour rather than saying: that it's the colour of evil.

    What about Byakuren, does her top purple tinted hair show that she is enlightened, or does it show her fear and negative feelings towards death. I personally thought that it showed how she is really evil if we are to follow Buddhist believes.

    I dont understand the "98" part anyone care to explain? We normally just call it PC dont we? Its just confusing to call it PC98 wich is not even a computer but a collective name (9800 series) that includes so many computers over a few decades that cant even run the game and might fool people to believe its about a specific year. If Touhou came out -96 I guess it was made for lowend DX2 486 PC 50-66Mhz in mind, same as Warcraft or highend Pentium/MMX.

    • @Surnist
      @Surnist  Před 4 lety

      The reason it's called PC-98 is because it's a shortened version of the name "PC-9800 Series" as you said, or in Japanese "Pī Shī Kyūsen Happyaku Shirīzu" to "Pī Shī Kyū-hachi".
      It's just significantly faster to pronounce.

      @@fifthgenerationanti-shadow9423 I know for sure that some disks ran on both Amiga500 and in MS-Dos. I dont know much more than that, it could have been some special cases and not the norm but the format should be compatible then; unless there are more than one format. Im pretty sure DOS/Windows took "xcopy" from Amiga so they problably had their eyes on it.
