Disney Plus had it's latest Marvel Cinematic Universe show with Hawkeye... but for some reason it ended up feeling messy, slow, and at times confused. After discovering the show had deleted scenes, it all became very clear. What the show was meant to be was not what it ended up being.

That small deleted scene revealing they knew each other as kids should definitely have been in and I really don't get why they cut it. Building up hype is not worth taking out much - needed character development like that. Clint Barton's backstory completely getting scrapped is also mind - boggling to me. Not having enough time in a guy's OWN SHOW to use some of the airtime to his backstory is completely ridiculous!

@@strigijoe8685 1) What does it mean that the show was built around hype? Do you mean it was built around a kingpin reveal at the end of the show? Every mcu Disney+ show has had a surprise villian but I haven't heard of falcon and winter soldier or Loki being built around hype for Kang or Sharon as the power broker. Or does that mean it was built around the murder mystery of who killed Armand?
      2. Given the show and at best the deleted scenes so what was filmed, where do you out his back story? In ep 1 we see Kate witness Clint during the battle of New York and become inspired by him then her origin and being suspended. Then we see Clint and his family and what sours the plot of the show the auction and Kate dawning the suit. Every ep follows that. Ep 2 follows directly off of that. Ep 3 we see how echo is related to Clint and her origin. Ep 4 carries off of ep 3. Ep 5 I supposed could've fit in Clint's origin but where do you out it that it makes sense of pacing? Beginning before intro and then pick up with him at grills? It fits in the intro but doesn't really match the pacing for that ep I guess with him being ronin fighting Maya maybe but would still feel kinda outta place. Ep 4 as a nightmare sequence or b fore the intro of ep 5 would be the only places to out it imi

As someone who wanted mcu Clint dead in Ultron I now want to see more of him training young avengers. But that's just my 2 cents. And this is all before seeing the deleted scenes which I'm prefer to have reminded deleted. The scene with clint and his mom could've been a dream sequence and chopped up a little bit in ep 4 when he sleeps and is reminded of Nat but it doesn't bother me if it's not in the show I don't think it exactly fits considering he'd become a shield assissian and then mass murderer in endgame anyway

Daredevil S1 had this fantastic moment in episode 8, Shadows in the Glass. Matt has been working towards finding out about and then revealing Fisk to the public. He was a menace, hiding behind coverups and in the shadows, but bringing his name into the public mindset would force Fisk to confront the world, and maybe some people would start to look critically at this man. But Fisk reveals himself. He undos everything Matt has been working towards. It is an absolutely glorious reveal, turnabout for the series with Matt being the one in hiding now.

Every third act in a marvel production always resorts to punch, punch, and more punch. The best scene in Hawkeye was the conversation between Clint and Yelena because even though they fought beforehand, the conflict is resolved with words. But then it cuts back to Kingpin throwing Kate around and it is not nearly as compelling. It’s something I actually really liked about Eternals. Makkari punching Ikaris to hell wasn’t what solved the problem, it was his love for Sersi and his inability to let her go that resolved that conflict.

    1) for phase 1-3 the MCU was structured as a coherent saga so it was all one thing really. You knew where you had to go if you wanted to understand something.

This “hype culture” also sadly extends to the Book of Boba Fett, where we could finally get to see a fan favorite character be fleshed out and given more time, but sadly by the middle part of his OWN show, he gets sidelined by newer characters and more “interesting” subplots.

This show really made me realize how much I dislike this format of extremely short series. 6 episodes was not enough to fully explore these characters and plot lines they introduced. The biggest benefit that shows have over movies is that you get the extra time, so why not use it. I really dislike the idea of a "6-hour movie." A 6 hour movie is a bad idea! The writers should be taking full advantages of the strengths of TV.

This was SUCH a good vid, and super interesting. I almost had the opposite experience haha. Hawkeye was my least anticipated last year, but I ended up liking it -- and came away pleasantly surprised. Was actually working on a script about all the stuff I loved.
...But then the deleted scenes cropped up and man, I lost all steam. The show could've been GREAT. So much backstory cut and wasted, and it made me like it *less* in hindsight. Some of the most baffling deletions I've ever seen, and you're spot on; it was all for hype.
Part of me wonders if the reasoning for delaying Kingpin was even worse. Did they want to time it with NWH for that one-two Charlie-Vincent punch? IIRC it was within days of each other, and I wouldn't put it past them to sacrifice Hawkeye's story for it.

When I finished the show I felt off but couldn't put it in words, now I can say I wasn't left with the usual Marvel feeling, the feeling Wandavision left me and to a lesser extent Falcon & Winter Soldier. Marvel does big superhero stuff but their best work is always the most character-focused and the final product of the Hawkeye show just, wasn't. It felt more like the Loki show, just hitting story beats for an eventual other story down the line, just moving characters into the places they need to be for the next project.

Like bro it's the PERFECT setup for the introduction of Kingpin, the dark & gritty world he deals in, making it the perfect place for a character like the Ronin to be involved. I love the scene in Endgame where we see him taking down members of the yakuza. BUT ITS ONLY 2 MINUTES & 30 SECONDS! Let us see Clint struggle to cope, let us see him rage in the wake of massive loss. Then in season 2 (after Endgame) we introduce Kate Bishop & Yelena to drive the story from there. And use Clint's time as the Ronin to appeal to Yelena. Because just like her, he knows what it's like to be angry & seek revenge for those that were taken from him

My speculation is that I think the studio wanted something a lot more light hearted and fun for the holiday season. While the crew was making something a little bit more serious like Falcon and Winter Soldier.
It would explain how we go from things like the deleted scene of Elanor and Fisk to the actual scene we got where he's surrounded by sparkly lights and a hiwian shirt. And from Hawkeyes backstory to somehow knowing more about Jack.

I think another problem with the Kingpin reveal is that it rides only on one aspect of what made Netflix Kingpin so great.
What made Kingpin so compelling in Daredevil was that he shared almost as much screentime as Matt did, and so we got to see his struggles and more of his character grow and develop alongside Matt’s. In Hawkeye Kingpin isn’t handled this way, and so he had to be *completely* carried by Vincent D'onofrio's performance. And sure, it’s great, but it’s not the sole reason Kingpin was so interesting and cool to watch in Daredevil.

its so weird how they cut it out. marvel made infinity war/endgame, which had 5hrs total and honestly feels like one movie, but will cut out character development, im assuming partially for run time, rather than just... making an episode a bit longer? also fisks reveal would have rec3ived so much hype no matter where in the series it was put. daredevil has a die-hard fanbase (as it should, i would say its thebest marvel series we've ever gotten, maybe even the best superhero series ever), and if fisk was in hawkeye more, i imagine a lot more people would be hooked on it (most people i know didnt bother watching it)

whoever made that call to delete all these scenes is just dumb af. probably wanted to keep it a 6 episodes instead of yknow… putting in effort.

So I watched the show for the first time and interspliced the deleted scenes where they would fit best and it made the show probably my second favorite MCU show behind Loki

100% agreed. There was a lot of good, but they didn’t do Clint, his past or the fights justice tbh…
I was also the same as you where Hawkeye was my most anticipated among the other Marvel ones. I’m sad that they completely overshadowed Clint with Kate Bishop…

It’s a similar issue with the Eternals, all of deleted scenes added so much more depth to some of the characters.

We still don't know Clint's backstory. I feel cheated.
It felt like they rushed it and just threw in all these characters.
I love Hawkeye he's my fave Avenger.
We did not get much of him in the Marvel Movies.
It would have been nice if we had a lot more of him.

Agree about the hype problem and deleted scenes - however I still loved the show and some of the elements that it did get right from the fraction run. But I'm ultra disappointed that they stole the art without any permission or any payment or credit anything!

I really enjoyed this show, but it could have been so much more. I didn't watch the Daredevil show, so I only know Kingpin from the Spiderman 90s tv cartoon. I think introducing him earlier in the show would really make me more invested in his character. And the deleted scenes are amazing!

This show really demonstrated that six episodes is not enough, idk how they ruined an ending with the kingpin but they managed to.

WHAT. THE. HELL??? There was a scene with Clint's background growing up, with his mom, with perhaps a brief look at the circus where he honed his archery skills, and they CUT IT???? WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE THEY THINKING???

I really feel like the 6-episode format of these shows has the potential to REALLY hurt some of the ideas that these shows want to put forth.
This show is a PERFECT example of that.
Dear god, Spider-Man: Freshman Year and X-Men '97 better be thirteen episodes at least...

    • @dingkong5034
      @dingkong5034 Před 2 lety

Freshman Year is the exception. It's an origin series. Hell, make it 4 episodes and have the runtime be 45 minutes each.

Dude, bad examples. Freshman Year and X-Men are cartoons, which means it’s likely that their episodes are gonna be a lot more. It’s why What If has more episodes compared to the live action ones.

Honestly, I loved the show. I felt it finally gave Clint more room to shine, and I loved Kate. However, I do see your point. Still love the show, but I agree with you. They should have kept those scenes. But another thing - I was actually surprised and excited about that Kingpin reveal (although it would have been just as cool in ep 2, and more surprising, as I was hoping that hand was his). Why? See, Spider-Man: No Way Home was delayed for over a month in Norway (they announced the delay the day before, can you believe it smh)! So, I had to stay of social media and the internet as much as I possibly could to avoid falling into the Spoiler-Verse. And I did it! I got to see NWH in theaters on Jan 22nd, not having anything spoiled. Impossible, but true. Meaning, I had no idea about the Matt Murdock cameo. So, after Hawkeye, I was like, "Hmm, I wonder where and when they'll use Cox's Daredevil. I doubt it's NWH, but it's got to be soon."

Another issue with this show in particular is the 'Black Widow' effect, AKA 'yet another mistreatment of this character's legacy'. This show came way too late and still forgot to give us backstory on the title character, so instead they just went 'oh screw this, let's just focus on the new kid since we're only going to work with them anyway'.
You know who else has suffered with this? Thor. His entire trilogy is like Marvel had no idea what to do with his character that they had to put another character on the spotlight to sell the movies. This is a decade old issue where, whenever Marvel has no idea what to do with the character because they're 'tOo bOrInG', they'll just push them aside and turn them into the background comic relief in their OWN story.
I'd say I'm glad they didn't do that to Black Panther, but, may Chadwick rest in peace, we don't have him anymore, so it really gives me the impression the next generation of the MCU is either going to be this Disney travesty or the lame excuse for characters like Eternals, which is sad because there's much more to these characters than the MCU gives them credit.

Hawkeye is mh favorite avenger (no really) and I was so hyped when this show was announced. In fact, this us the only Disney+ MCU show Ive watched. But I was si disatisfied with it because there were so many subplots in it for a 6 episode show that it was barely about Hawkeye anymore
And then I watch this and find out about the deleted scene of his childhood? That would have been some really good backstory to a character I've loved for years

    • @androgynousbutter1373

I kinda feel like Marvel, when pressed to cut out scenes, opted to cut out Clint's because it was more important to build up Kate and Echo (who are nice and I also like) because they have higher potential to be part of future projects. This I feel especially about Echo because they were intending to debut a show about her without having prior build up or appearances in a show or movie before
