How To Correctly Use A Rotary Polisher! - Chemical Guys

  • In today's video, Nick demonstrates the proper technique and process for restoring gloss using a TORQ R rotary polisher. Using a rotary polisher can be frightening at first due to the horror stories we have all heard about burning and damaging paint. Old rotary designs are bulky, noisy and a hassle to work with. Torq Tool Company has refined the rotary polisher to a smooth, quiet and precision instrument.
    We get a lot of questions about selecting the “right” machine, polishing pad, and polishing compound. People always ask what works best for black paint, for red paint; for hard paint, for soft paint; for domestic cars, for import cars, etc. You can make just about any paint finish shine on any vehicle if you select the best combination of polishing machine, buffing pad, and polishing compound for that particular car. Every car and every paint job is different, though: How much paint did the manufacturer spray on? What paint brand and formula did they use? What type of paint is it: petroleum-based or water-based? Was it waxed and cared for, or was it neglected for years and destroyed by the elements? How humid was it the day they painted that run of cars? Was the car in an accident and was it repainted with completely different paint? These are the questions you need to consider as you start polishing a car.

    Hey guys - I've been watching your videos to get an idea of how to properly polish out the paint on the '78 Thunderbird in my garage. It was my grandfathers, and at some point in life, all the vertical facing parts of the car (doors, etc) were repainted and clear coated. The horizontal surfaces (roof, hood, trunk) are all single stage paint still and have some swirls and water spots on them and are also going dull. My question is whether I would have to use a different technique with the rotary polisher for the horizontal surfaces than I would for the vertical surfaces.

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey Jamie! Thanks for your message. The same process would be used for the entire vehicle. Keep the pad flat and moving constantly without applying pressure until the compound/polish used turns clear.

    Just an educational question...What’s the intent of starting a rotary polisher off the surface, vs a DA on the surface? Thanks!

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před 2 lety

      Hey Robert! Great question, since is a rotary is direct drive and only spins on one axis, placing it on the surface and then turning it on will create a swirl whereas the DA has a counterweight that dictates the oscillation but won't create a swirl when placed on the surface. Also, by placing the DA down before starting it will save the bearings and prevent product from being flung.

    • @joshualloyd4275
      @joshualloyd4275 Před 8 měsíci

      You need a rotary with a fine polishing foam pad. Run it at about 1000 rpm with a good finishing polish or specific swirl remover. Getting rid of holograms or swirls is mostly about technique with the polisher, you've got to be deliberate, slow and flat with light pressure. If they are really bad you might need to use a medium foam pad first with slightly more aggressive cleaner wax or one step like malco rejuvinator, then hit it with the swirl remover after.
