A first follow-up to the story of buying a Lobster from the grocery store seafood section and rehabbing it and keeping it as a pet. Leon has touched the hearts of many who see what an interesting creature he is. - Jak na to + styl
I mean, look at him, he cleans himself, he cleans his tank, he does the dishes, he keeps everything in it's place, such a good boy.
Had you not taken him, healed him he would've ended in a Pot as someones meal. I think it's interesting that all living creatures can heal if a person really gives time and care. I think it's educational and really kind. Thx

Except he’s prob really lonely that tank is basically prison and he can’t interact or mate
@@HigherKaiju well he is better than at the grocery shop for sure.
And who knows, maybe having his more basic needs dealt with without effort is good enough and peaceful for him, maybe not.

@@ellap6828 to add on to the other comment, most animals that have been in captivity for a while aren’t released into the wild for the same reason. it’s just not safe for them and it would be cruel to release them at that point since you’re basically signing their death warrant. that’s also the case for animals born into captivity and socialised around humans.

I’m from Newfoundland, Canada and growing up my dad would always let me keep pet lobsters too, lol. He bought and sold lobster for a living and had a GIANT aquarium to house them in. I had my own section for the lucky ones I was allowed to save! Leon is definitely 100% a male. We had to know the sex by sight because the females have that delicious orange roe or “cheese” inside people go nuts for. The minute you opened the grocery store box and I saw that narrow tail I said you poor little guy!!! The females have much wider tails to hold all the eggs when they spawn. You never need to flip him over! :) That time when he planted the grass in front of his cave I think he was trying to woo in a female. They are incredible creatures and I enjoyed it as much as you are. I am so in love with Leon!!!! You are letting me relive my childhood and you are so kind to him! Thank you!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Leon is definitely a male Lobster, Im a lobster fisherman from Prince Edward Island. The females look quite different when they reach the size of Leon, very wide tale, and body. with smaller claws and basically 2 pincer claws instead of a large crusher and smaller pincer. they also are usually lighter in colour, with light green and yellow hues.
To really tell, under the tale at the very base are 2 small fins, on a male they are larger and stiff, on a female they are very small and wispy.
You just keep your peepers off our Leon lol

I'm an expert at something too, and I can tell with confidence, that this is indeed a lobster. Just in case anyone needed a confirmation.

Rewatching the Leon series and something that stood out to me was when you mentioned that releasing Leon wasn't practical. You're absolutely right, I just wanted to expand on the why a little more :). In South Carolina, you're actually a little south of the American Lobster's natural range. American Lobsters like cold, rocky water, just like what you'd find in New England down through around Virginia. Being dropped in the sandier sea of the Southeast would be pretty jarring for a species from further away. I grew up in Maine and spent a lot of time out on lobster boats as a kid, so lobsters have a special place in my heart :)
Never realized how malnourished/starved and sick lobsters were at the grocery store tank. Leon gave me a new appreciation for how cleanly and beautiful the lobster really is. Can’t wait to see his new BIG home and maybe some friends.
It's completely off point, but wouldn't it taste better if it had a good diet?

It's incredible how popular this guy has become over the simple act of rescuing and caring for a lobster. A tale both quite relatively mundane yet wildly lovely.
You're cutting Leon short though, it's his personality that makes the show
It seems a lot of people had the same desire to take a supermarket lobster home as a kid.
It's crazy to see how quickly Leon recuperated. In his first video he looks near death, so starved he immediately starts polishing the substrate.
And now look at him, the curious little fighter :D
While this is heartwarming, it saddens me to think what happened to all the other lobsters Leon shared the tank with, and all the other lobsters and other animals worldwide who weren't as fortunate as Leon. After all, Leon was picked at random, and could've just as well not been picked to be saved.
Right exactly

Leon is just so much fun to watch, especially with the voiceover telling us the little technicalities of Leon’s life that turn out to be so interesting. Also, the music is lovely.
I love how you’ve saved this lobster. Look how the colour of his shell has changed! Please, please, with the bigger tank give him an environment! Live plants, a coral box he can hide in, and LIVE fish, clams, etc. Don’t feed him dead stuff. Continue to play with him, maybe some balls or something.
Ooh. Very good suggestions!
Even if you could take Leon to a remote coral area where other lobsters of his variety live, it would be a waste. The other lobsters would soon tire of hearing him tell over and over about his brush with death and how he ended up in a luxury resort where he was fed daily with great food. None of the other lobsters would believe him, and soon no others would come around, and when he came upon a group of lobsters, they would quickly spread as if they had some other important things to attend to. Leon would still be a loner. He would wish he could return to watch the cats and the pretty fishes on the other side of the room. At least where he is, he knows he has a friend.
Awesome!
Why am I crying over a lobster 🦞
😂😂😂 Yup!
I was apprehensive at first but then your comment got funnier and funnier and it made me laugh
This is a Disney movie script
Only a suggestion: lobsters can relax or calm down much more easily by hiding under things. Maybe you could build him a shelter with rocks or dry wood. Also he could climb them like a parcour or move them to keep himself busy when he feels bored :)
He is planning on doing that!
he mentioned he planned to do something exactly like this when he is going to get the bigger aquarium
I used to have a crayfish and I can totally confirm this :)
Yeah was just thinking it's a very barren aquarium
Agreed, he would need a bigger tank to do that
you can see how excited he gets when the owner came to feed him😆 so glad to see he looks way healthier now
I don't think I've ever seen what I would confidently say is a fat and happy lobster until now. Way to go Leon! ❤️
Leon is almost certainly male, considering the narrowness of the tail. The swimmerets (pleopods) in general are not a good indicator of gender. Only the front two are appreciably different between males and females.
I think he'd also be a lot happier with a cave or other shelter. He's gotta feel pretty insecure out in the open all the time. This will be especially important when it is molting time.
Finally, Leon will also probably be happier if you can chill the water a bit, since 65 deg F is quite close to the stress threshold temperature (68-70 deg F) where his systems will start shutting down. I think he'll also live longer at a cooler temperature. BTW, if you turn him loose in the Carolinas, he will almost certainly die when the ocean water heats up in the summer.
Great info here! Thanks Doc!
I hope he can read this

To the top with this Leon saving advice!
When you brought him home, he was depressed, half-dead and likely resigned to his fate that he would soon be gone from this world. But you did something not many of these creatures would ever expect and nurtured him back to health giving him a new lease on life. Leon is very lucky indeed you gave him a new home and a second chance! I am happy that it seems you've decided to keep Leon long term. Thank you for sharing this with all of us!
Well, as we all know, we are happier with a good pal or endearing mate. Have you considered that to be a next Humane step for "Leon"'s emotional life? I myself am very ill, but adopted a 16 LB 1 year old sweet cat, & immediately knew he'd need a friend of his own species since I can't "walk" or play with him. So I put the word out of a ten week old kitten -- Molly loves Juble & Juble seems to really care about Molly!! They'll grow up together & as I hit the drain, they'll never be separated! Lobsters have to, humans don’t. Can’t apply the same principles to animals who act on instinct
@@aak1992 Plus the things he's feeding are already dead, and would've been eaten by somebody one way or another.
It's why I don't care for live feeding with predator animals like snakes. There are other alternatives that result in a quicker, less painful death for the feeder animal (E.G. the cerebral/spinal separation procedure they do on frozen/thaw feeders, which is near instantaneous death), and ways to feed where the predator doesn't know the difference.
When you feed live, it's not any more natural, because it's not a wild predator going out in search of a meal in its natural environment, where there's also always an equally fair chance the prey gets away. It's you going out of your way to make sure something suffers an unnecessarily awful death in an impossible circumstance. The appeal to nature argument here falls flat on its face.
Life and death are irrevocably linked. Nothing changes that.

I used to see it happen all the time back when I was a kid. I'd catch a yabby (freshwater crayfish) from the local creek and put it in the fish tank. After a few weeks of clean water and good food, the animal's shell would go from murky brown to a beautiful turquoise blue!
You should definitely give him a shelter! Lobsters love to hide in small shelters, they can get really stressed out when they don’t have this opportunity.
Some bricks and a roof tile or a ceramic tube.
I've been asking this dude to get him one too.
Oh yes.. please give him a shelter
Oh no! I hope he sees this comment and is able to get one for Leon! 😖😖
Ceramic pots were always a hit with the crayfish and crabs I had, the porous surface turns into an endless snack source. I also like that you can break them and get some interesting shapes with less effort than stacking stones. Everything adheres to it really well, so they make a good base for gluing rocks, growing plants, building terrain. Hardest part is finding pots that are aquarium safe, but there's tons of advice on finding them and even sellers who make ceramic hides for aquariums. I hear pipe recommended a lot, but I always noticed that they slip a lot on plastic surfaces. Maybe I just had clumsy invertebrates

Leon: "Oh, absolutely not."
Everybody needs Leon in their life. So cute!
His color has completely changed, looks as healthy as a wild one.
Thanks for pointing that out!
Edit: I checked the before picture (thumbnail) with this video and he is, indeed, more red and brown now, whereas before his color was duller and more black.
I hope it doesn’t turn to orange any soon…

Of note, as he's a Maine Lobster (the kind sold live by grocery stores), Leon's not actually from the ocean environment that you're from. He's from the northern parts of the North Atlantic (Maine, Massachusetts, Conneticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Quebec, and Newfoundland) rather than the more equatorial regions of the southern North Atlantic and the Gulf Coast (Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Carribean, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi). That means that releasing him in the Carolina Coasts would be like setting someone from Europe down in the Phillipines.
I was gonna say, I didn't think they had these kind of lobsters that far south. I've seen some in shallow rocky areas in Maine, if he lived there he could actually release him and give him a good chance
And fun fact, Philippines temperature can go up to 50° C so rip Europeans, even UK people
He should check with a biologist
@@BlazeYT_ As a professional Ireland, I can confirm that we (and Brits) generally can't survive much hotter than Spain or maybe Florida. Humidity in the Nila would kill me :D
@@Noobsaibot21 Florida is crazy humid too you probably wouldn't survive that either lol
I watched your first video last night and this update just now. I almost cry watching these, I am so happy that you saved Leon. In my mind, I named him “Lucky.” I tried to do this years ago, bought two lobsters from the grocery store and was going to save them and bring them to the ocean the following day. I put them in the bathtub overnight. I was too young and ignorant back then to realize that they would die without saltwater. Thank you for saving this lobster, you are an absolute hero to me.
Thank You for loving Leon. He is wonderful.
So glad you got a new home!❤
For leon to go from no longer even moving when you got him out of the box to actively engaging with everything in his environment and constantly shifting is insane to me. He was clearly depressed and ready to die, his body probably shutting down from lack of food and care.
its so sad that he didnt have any hope :-( he knew he couldnt fight back with his claws because they were banded and he was too malnourished to run away

I just found out about Leon less than an hour ago. I currently love him/her now and I hope Leon lives forever.
I found out yesterday and i love him to!
Crabs and lobsters can acheive negligible senesence, so this is possible from a certain point of view.
i found him literally 30 minutes ago and i can confidently say i would die for leon
@@mattr2238 How do they do that,is it because cells renew or more like it doesn't age at all?
Yep....I fell hard for Leon too - They're a lovely little creature.
I’m so attached to Leon… 😍😍 Thanks, Brady, for rescuing him and giving him a good and happy life!
You did Lobster Claw Therapy to strengthen his grip and make it work. What a sweetie.
Leon looked like he was ready to die when he got him you can see the life came back into him. This is great!
Yess this lil fella is a game changer 😇
Is it bad that all I can think about is how much better he probably tastes now
@@mauirandall8176 nah just weird
I never realized that they don’t even get fed in a grocery store. The whole process is so barbaric. The stuff of nightmares.
Agreed, that broke my heart! I never even imagined they'd starve the poor things
Oh yeah it's brutal. I remember reading a story where one lobster got its claws free and was so hungry it ate every other lobster in the tank.
Them not getting fed in the store isn't the barbaric part, it's them being kept active in the tank for so long without food that's the barbaric part. If it were just them being kept in a hibernation state for the majority of time, and then only kept active for a couple days without food, that would be one thing (after all, most people wouldn't want to eat anything that contains poop, even if the poop is from the animal itself). But grocery store lobsters are kept active and hungry from a few days to upwards of a month and a half, and their only source of sustinence during that time is cannibalism.
As a former grocery store seafood clerk, I promise you that the lobsters do get fed in the store, and on a daily basis.
@@InfinityOrNone How, in a logical thinking brain, is that OK for people? Same with the way chickens and cows are treated. Just awful. Truly awful.
It’s very therapeutic for me, thank you kind sir.
One of the coolest pets I had was a crayfish I put in my Potomac River tank. After a few days when his armor cleaned up the color changes were amazing. Watching him hypnotize a goldfish then catching it was neat but eating them like corn on the cob was something I had never seen any do in other tanks.
I had heard of people buying lobsters and releasing them back into the ocean, but realized how pointless that could be, after your first video. Leon had such limited mobility due to the rubber bands and I imagine living in such a cramped tank, it seems unlikely they would have survived. I get why some are suggesting that Leon should be returned to the ocean, but as long as you're taking good care of Leon, I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping them.
And even if he is ready to be released, and there's a safe way and a safe spot for him to be released, being right there in Brady's tank for the rest of his life is a hell of a lot better than tied up in a restaurant tank waiting to be boiled alive!
Agreed. And all it would cost to put a lobster back into the ocean where he could be caught again seems pointless. Especially since he was bought from a store which will continue to sell lobsters anyway. So yes, it would be potentially "saving" (for all we know after the trauma of what he's gone through he might prefer life as a pet) Leon I think it would be better to dedicate those resources (effort, time, money) and put it towards saving the ocean habitat from which he came.
Blah blah. Let him go.
@@VitalityMassage Why?
Buying lobsters and releasing them is actually a very harmful move, as it’s going to support the fishing industry and make the demand seem higher, which will cause them to produce/hunt more animals that will all find themselves in this exact position. But what this guy is doing is of course not harmful. In the contrary, he showed thousands/millions of people how lobsters feel after that traumatic journey and how interesting they actually are.
I don’t know why I’m so personally invested in the wellbeing of a lobster but here I am
Me too. I think it's because we sometimes we feel like a store 🦞 with rubber band on our claws.
Lol me too 😁
I just think its still too small to eat yet...

I m at a low point in life, but these videos about Leon cheered me up a little, what a happy little guy he is 😊
That clank sound when he locked his lobster claws really surprised me!!! Way to go Leon!!!
Not releasing him doesn't seem like a big deal. He seems very happy and I'm sure will like his bigger tank. He's got a much better life with you than being someone's dinner. It's amazing to see how much color has come back to his shell.
Plus Leon might have never lived in the wild to begin with, he could have been from a lobster farm. So he might not survive very long in the wild anyways.
Personally, I think leon is living a Kings life... food falls from the sky, he has clean water & he's safe. This may be safest for him considering all he's been through.
he needs some kind of hide, and i think a bigger tank would do him good. seems like he can barely turn around in that tank
