- Full Draining and restoration of this koi pond which has been left for three years. The pond is full of algae and we want to find out if there are any fish still living in there. The goldfish and koi appeared relatively healthy considering and there were a few large koi in the pond.

be nice to see a follow up in a couple of months, how their colors have changed/brightened and what mixes they have. great job saving them
ask mainly because I rescued 100 or so Cichlids, owner was old and could no longer care for the tanks. I slowly got the them used to the right water conditions, keeping the stress down. was amazing to see them healthy and vibrant colors

With the quality of "color" feed available, colors should come out. Amazing to think how many breeding fish were in there. Sizes of younger show breeding history.
I'm not sure if I'm more impressed by the fishes ability to survive in that environment or by your dedication to replying to hundreds of comments. Either way, fascinating video!
Haha I’m glad you noticed! It’s turning in to a big job but I’ll keep it going for as long as I can! Always happy to chat with my subscribers ❤️
Fish actually love green water, it's only humans that don't 😅😂
Young fish do very well in green water. The nitrates in this pond were at dangerous levels though
This is nothing once my uncle left this kind of fish unattended in a fish bowl of 4 litres unattended for months without food or water change
Guess what they survived don't know what they ate but they weren't dead
where are the fish ??
It's nice to see that the new home owner wanted to save these fish and have a healthy environment for them rather than just leaving them abandoned as they have been.
Yes they love their new fish and are giving them a loving home
Not that nice, he said they had bought the house months ago…
@@Nojustno592they were probably to busy with the new home and maybe couldn't find someone to clean the pond
@@edd3892yes and it seemed like the new owners weren’t even sure if there were any fish because it was so green, yet there were 122! Adding more food to a small, closed, already dirty system would have been more harmful than leaving the pond be as it was. Until now that he’s got the filtration operational again and all the old crud cleaned out. But given the time of year, you aren’t supposed to feed much (or anything, depends on system and climate) during the winter.
Those are strong, healthy fish and now that they don’t have the stress, I hope the owners have a way to sell or donate all the babies they will begin producing! 😅

Holy moly, I was not expecting how deep that pond was!!! It would be amazing to have a huge pond like that!!
Yeah it was massive wasn’t it
Yeah same, I thought it was going to be at most maybe waist height but that was super deep.
amazing indeed, but a heck of a lot of maintenance.
@@bertjesklotepino that’s what they have me for 💪🏻
@@Mountain_Aquatics What a bunch of lucky people they must be, to have someone like you.
Cleaning a small fish tank is something i did regularly when we, the family and me, had one.
BUT, every time it had to be done i must honestly say that i did not enjoy it that much.
In fact, it is why we do not have the fish tank anymore.
I was trying a faster way of cleaning it, you know, with a hammer. Turns out it worked great.
It fitted like a glove into the garbagebin.
For those surprised that the fish were doing just fine, koi and goldfish can eat algae and bugs and worms, and were likely just eating the excess algae growth from the surfaces. The algae also have a beneficial effect of oxygenating the water and dealing with fish waste. Additionally, the pond seems pretty large, and they likely had plenty of space. On top of that the cloudy water provides cover from whatever might try to eat them.
Do you keep koi?
You are right
@@Mountain_Aquatics No but I've had goldfish and observed them 'cleaning' the gravel in the aquarium, and also going after the algae disks we'd feed to the bottom feeders. Also, a quick google search confirmed their general diet.

Check the update videos. It’s doing much better now
Well, all you need is moving water. Algae takes care of the nitrates, and the moving water gives the oxygen. Fishkeeping 101.
I adopted a betta that I named Cherry because she initially had very little color and resembled a cherry salmon. Just a few months later and she's a deep blackish color with bright red fins and shiny stripes of blue. Fish changing color in good conditions is wild.

Yes I agree they look so much happier now
Who would have thought that such large fishes were swimming around in there. 👍
We were shocked 😳
What have they eaten in these three years?
Algae and insects we believe. The previous owners spend a lot of time on a different property in another country. But they may have had somebody feeding the fish. We will never know
That big koi is a Chagoi (tr. brown carp), not the most colourful but generally the most friendly of all koi varieties. Generally they tend to be broader than coloured koi, including the head and fins. A koi's colour will generally come out better in coloured or murky water and fade in clear water, that is why top breeders in Japan use muddy cloudy pools to keep and breed their prize koi.
Nice to see you looked after them and a great clean up of the pool!
Thank you so much for your insight Steve. Yes I think every pond should have a Chagoi, they tend to be the biggest and tamest fish in any pond
Its so sad that they were abandoned, if this pond was maintained, it would of been like a mansion to to them, so big and so deep

It was good to see them happy at the end 😁
Wow! So many fish - it's amazing that many survived!
Nature finds a way
They feed off of algae (the green water) and insect larvae.
The descendants of Carp are generally very strong.
Thank you for helping the fishies. You get yourself a like for that, sir
So nice of you, much appreciated
I'm wondering why you didn't clean the algae off the walls? And I agree it would be nice to see the end product.
Wouldn't want to be liable for the pond leaking, and its part of the nitrogen cycle
Exactly that, the old coating would have been years old and I probably would have damaged it and ended up with an empty pond !
If pond scum is all that's keeping the pond from leaking, maybe the homeowner should have redone the pond.
@@smde1 it’s a very expensive process. And it’s not the algae that is keeping the water in, it will be the G4 clear-seal underneath
@@smde1 If the scum is blocking the leaks, it's only a matter of time before the neighbours start complaining about their yards flooding.
How nice for the fish. They were happy once they were back home. So cute ! I love the two synchronized swimmers towards the end. Awwww. Very cool !!!

Nice video! However as a koi owner for over 30 years, I have to point out that there is a massive difference between a Koi Pond, and a pond with koi fish in it.
This is a pond with koi fish in it. A "real" koi pond is about 2 meters deep, has one or more bottom drains with a beefy filter (both mechanical and biological).
Furthermore a rule of thumb for a koi pond is that it needs to be at least 1000 liter PER KOI. So if you have 25 koi, you need at least a 25.000 liter pond.
Although the size of this pond would be good, it is not deep enough and the filtration system is probably not even good enough for 5 medium size koi.
Yes this pond is definitely overstocked. However we did not put the fish in here, so we can only advise the customer going forward. There is hopefully a plan to upgrade the filtration system in the spring
I work for a pond company and the number of customers that say, "But my water is green my fish are going to die" is amazing, I should send this video lol
Feel free to share, more views for me lol. Do you do maintenance or installs?
Yes, green water is harmless, and if fact good for, the fish. People are so misinformed about pond care. I have had customers insist that their pond is super clean as the water is crystal clear and looks like you could drink it, yet their fish are dying or sick. When I test the water, it's full of ammonia or nitrites. Yet, they can't get their head around the fact the water look clean. Then other ponds have green or muddy water, and that water is actually safe, but the people are pumping it all out and doing full water changes to 'clean it'. I feel like pulling my hair out....they spend all that money on a pond and fish, yet can't do some quick research and reading on the net about basic pond water chemistry or cycling a pond.
I work doing the same thing
Way before filters or electricity the Chinese raised their goldfish in green water to oxygenate it and remove nitrates.
@@bernardtrujillo4517 in the U.K.?
This is beautiful to see! I don't understand how people can just walk away from their pets when they leave.
They are in safe hands now though
In the homeowners defense, however small, this is one pet they could NOT take with them. They should have probably set up sometime to care for them.
I had a client who thought he had a leak in his koi pond, I emptied it and used a large inflatable kids pool as the fish storage, I added a pump to make a fountain to try and oxygenate the water for the fish, similar to what they had in the original pond, I cleaned the pond and looked for leaks, I think it was in the water feature and through evaporation that they were losing water volume, so I added a self fill device if the water level went down. They later hired in someone to clean the pond and they put all their fish into a small little tote and left it in the sun, the fish were dead by the next day, the homeowner was furious and couldn't understand why they had such disregard for the health of the fish while storing them outside the pond. Koi can be very expensive for certain fish, whoever he hired just disappeared and he couldn't ever get them back on the line to even discuss them paying for the lost fish.
They should have got you back again instead of these ones that didn’t know what they were doing. There are plenty of “landscapers” that can dig a hole, but really you want somebody like us who understands fish and water 👍🏻
I can't imagine moving out, and abandoning my pets. People are horrible.
Yes they can be
We don't know the situation. They may have been forced out and didn't have a choice. I try not assume the worst.
@@Witchlordit's still cruelty and abandonment. that's a crime where I live, although they probably wouldn't do much about it unfortunately. I'm sure somebody could have found them a place to go if they spent a few minutes. pet stores would probably even take them to sell.

@@LeeRoland I highly doubt it. Koi like perfect water parameters, otherwise they get distressed and start flashing, showing signs of distress and sickness etc. In this case, they were forced to adapt to the water conditions. I have no doubt that many, many Koi died before these were rescued. Once they were in fresh, clean water, their color started coming back and they were more active. Falling leaves or nature has saved these fish. The leaves are eaten by the friendly bacteria as the leaves break down. Same goes for nitrates and ammonia. The algae will be behaving like plants to also eat harmful things. Great video
There are a lot of trees around the pond and lots of opportunity for bugs etc to fall in for the koi to eat. They will also eat the algae which will grow because of the nutrients. It’s a beautiful thing

That's a beautiful pond. I would love to have that in my garden.
Do you have a pond already?
Years back at the family farm, I decided to release 6 goldfish into the pond. The pond was approx 20’X40’ by 10’ deep. The goldfish were about 6” when I put them in. (They were outgrowing my huge indoor tank)
Within a month I noticed 2 herons frequenting the pond, so I assumed my goldfish were doomed.
The pond had the typical rushes by also lots of underwater growth so ‘seeing’ the goldfish was rare.
Then I got real busy with work so months went by before I checked the pond. It was an extremely hot dry summer but I was still shocked to see the ponds water lever reduced to only about 1’. So armed with a bucket and a net I went to see if any goldfish remained that needed rescuing.
Sure enough I spotted 1 right away but the vegetation made netting impossible. Figuring I’d pull the growth out then rescue the fish. As soon as I stuck my hands into the ponds water, I pulled my hands back out and let out a very unmanly girl scream. Something had wiggled in my hands!
Turns out all 6 of the original goldfish were still in the pond (now grown to be 12-14”), but they had bred.
The wiggling was millions of 1” gold/brown babies. So armed with a finer net I began scooping babies.
The 6 adults went into a kiddie pool. The babies I quit catching after I had 2 5gallon pails stuffed full with more fish than water. Which I immediately took to my nearest pet shop, he bought them as ‘feeders’. But he also bought each of the parents from me, coming out a couple days later with camp coolers to transport them in.
That’s an amazing story! Thank you. We’re there any left in the pond that managed to survive after that?

So something a lot of people don't know: while it's not recommended to keep them in such conditions, goldfish/koi naturally live in very murky, dirty, unkempt water (well, as unkempt as natural water can be lol). While this pond in its past state was by no means the ideal living situation for them, as you can see, they clearly were able to adapt.
Yes many top breeders in Japan use filthy mud ponds. In this instance though the water quality was terrible. They were surviving, they were just dying slowly. We found a couple of fish that did not make it whilst draining the pond, we just thought it best not to show that on video

I never would have guessed how many fish were in there nor how deep it was! How many gallons does that thing hold? I think the saving grace for the fish was that it was deep enough to prevent wild fluctuations of temp and ammonia ect. Nature made its own bio cycle.
Absolutely. It was around 27,000 litres so the water condition would have been stable at least
Can't believe those lil guys were in there for so long!! You've done a brilliant Job!! 👏

I love seeing this kind of pond rescue.. Credit where it is due chaps. I've had similar issues with cracked crystal on UV filters. I actually lost several Koi as a result, as the cracked crystal allowed the fish to be slowly electrocuted, I only realized they were being electrocuted when I tried to remove the deceased fish. (felt like pins and needles on my skin). Ofc there's also a part of me that understands that the pond being pea soup doesn't bother the fish at all and it's only us humans interfering, that force the fish to live in clear water. I imagine a new born baby screaming at birth because of the overwhelming extra light. Still, I enjoyed watching this.. Thank you.

Cheers Bryan, have a look at the update videos. You will see you are right, the fish seem to be getting some colour back 👍🏻
The pond before was more like their natural habitat! They were perfectly fine
We found 3 dead and many had red sores on their sides. The nitrates in the pond were extremely high
Looks like this video is a big turning point in your youtube journey ( 100k plus views already) . Good luck mate !!!
Yes it seems to be going viral. Thanks for the comment buddy
That was a great video. I would love a pond like that
It’s a stunning pond.
man i would love a job like that! seeing beautiful fish and ponds and cleaning them up! I love nature and fishing and would enjoy the peace they would bring!
I used to think the same, eventually I took the plunge and went for it! Keep watching CZcams videos and learn as much as you can. There’s loads on my channel that will help you 👍🏻
Hats off to you! That was one heck of an undertaking.
It was a massive job. Took two of us around 12 hours so 24 man hours in total. Glad you enjoyed the video ❤️
This is the first time I have watched one of your videos and I am amazed anything was living in that water. Those fish must have felt as if they were choking! Great to see it all clean and them swimming about. I am sure the new owner will get a lot of pleasure from them now he can see them. Great video. I am going to subscribe as I found this really interesting. Xxx
Great to earn a new sub 👍🏻 have you seen the update video?
@@Mountain_Aquatics not yet but I shall look out for it x
It’s already uploaded if you want to see how good the fish are looking now 👍🏻
@@Mountain_Aquatics just watched it. I can't wait to see it once the filters have done their job. The fish seem happy and healthy. Great video x
I’m sure we will be back 👍🏻
Pond is fantastic!

Good job
It’s lovely isn’t it
Job well done, Gents.
I bet the water bill to fill that back up was hefty.
I don’t think they are in a meter luckily 😁
