Our koi would think she'd died and gone to heaven in a pond with that much space and duckweed! She's going to a larger home where she will have a community soon; thanks for help in how to safely transport her.

not sure if anyone mentioned, but get a PVC angle little bigger than your hose. 30 or 60 degree, be amazed what a difference it makes

We lined coolers with bags. With ice packs. It keeps them calm and in a sleep state.

Enjoyed your video. In the future I would suggest you perform a PP dip before adding any new koi directly to your pond. The 2 you kept are very nice.
I typically do a salt treatment but didn't have the ability to do it this time.
As for potassium permanganate I was told it is illegal in Ca , like pretty much everything. But now that I look it seems like I can order it of off amazon with no shipping issues to my location.

the friend's pond was CRAZY. soup! glad later he put in that thing to hold the duckweed and plants off an area. seemed sad to have the top entirely covered where you couldn't see anything. nice how huge it is tho!
Ya its nice to see the fish, but the fish don't care about the color of the water. The brown water and the plant coverage actually helps them be less visible to predators. Just depends on what you want when setting up the pond. He wanted that natural pond look to it. But as you mentioned the spot where they can come up and be feed is a nice addition, so that he can see and enjoy them.

The overgrown floating plants will deprive the fish of oxygen. It's best to take at least half of them out. Hopefully the koi will eat the rest.
I don't think koi eat duckweed. Goldfish do and love it. Plants are best left as the roots (tiny as they may be) suck up "bad stuff" from the water. They also give the fish some shade.

The ones I have not really, they sometimes look for a place to lay their eggs since they are all for females.
I've had some others that have disappeared but have found them again later on.

I’m in Dubbo NSW my family built a great pond and bought very young koi and over the years they have grown huge and come and rest on our hands and eat. They are a beautiful fish totally the opposite to their disgusting river cousins.

Great video - I am starting on my own build. Quick question - I notice you left the bottom of the liner exsposed instead of covering it in rock. Are there benefits of keeping it exposed versus covering the bottom in rock? I have been going back and forth as to weather to cover the bottom of the pond in rock or leaving it as is so you would be able to see the bottom of the liner.
So in my opinion it is better to have no rocks at the bottom of the pond, but only at the top for aesthetics. Having the entire pond covered in rock will make it look nicer since you don't see the liner. However for small ponds like these, the rocks at the bottom accumulate a lot of gunk making it harder to clean. The filter won't remove as much of the gunk since it just gets stuck in the rocks. Its just not worth it in my opinion.
Depending on the design of the pond and the filtration you can have very low maintenance on the pond.

The best for green water (which is caused be the single cell floating algae)
Is to use a UV sterilizer which can be hooked up to the plumbing of the system.
I do have one hooked up on my pond but it is not in use since my pond stays clear with out it. Which can be due to the bog filters that I have or this other device I have in my pond which is called a "grander water revitalization device".
what are the small fully red koi fish called in your pond? Also the pink head with silver back called?
Those small ones are just common goldfish.

Yo, you scored some good looking Kois. Your Brother who was helping you is what I admired. Because some brother(s) are not into helping each other. You are blessed. Yeah the Duckweed are the "Scourge" of ponds. But I liked how your friend inserted that floating device to keep those Duckweeds on one side of the pond. Your Turtles - Get rid of it b/c they are really "Messy" and are also carnivorous. You have a great looking pond and I am envious - Good Job Dude.
Duckweed is and can be a problem even in aquariums. I clean mine off about once a month. BUT if you keep goldfish, ... THEY LOVE IT.
Beautifull kois - so healthy looking and nice colouring. Well done.
EDIT: A circle of hose can be floated in the pond and aquariums to either keep the duckweed together or make a feeding hole. Make sure the hose/pipe is dry on the inside and when "welded" into the circle, make sure no water can get in. (Test it in the bath...ha ha ha ha

So yes and no it more depends on water quality and how much you feed them. You can grow a fish to big for its area if you feed it a lot and ensure that the water is always kept in pristine condition.

Nice. How much did that pond cost you to build? I would love a pond like that but even through i work full time, my wages won't cover it and the house bills too. Also I like goldfish more than koi, as the koi look too big and have ugly faces lol.
My pond I would say I probably spent give or take $1000. A lot of the stuff I did get on craigslist and some things even for free.
The only things I really spent money on is the liner, skimmer, and plumbing material.
@Karl with a K I would have to disagree a UV light does kill single cell floating algae and keep the pond clear. You do have to get the right size wattage for the pond, as well as not have to high of a flow rate. It won't get rid of algae growing on the sides of the pond, but will definitely kill the single cell floating algae that turns the water green. As a result you will have a clear pond. Yes the UV light will kill some beneficial bacteria in the pond, but it is miniscule to the amount of beneficial bacteria you have attached to all the surfaces in the pond, rocks, media etc. So therefore it has little effect to the overall health of the pond. I have seen it on my own pond where it would turn green, add the UV light and it clears up. As well the ponds at the koi store I worked at, same situation, and from customers doing the same thing. Either adding a UV light or replacing the old bulb and boom the pond starts to clear up. Also they use UV lights in water treatment plants for killing bacteria and etc. you just need the right wattage and a slow flow rate.
For chemicals it does deepened on the pond, some types work for one persons pond and not on other's, so it can be a hit or miss. However you do have to add it weekly in order to keep the algae from growing in the pond. I worked at a Koi store and my data comes from customer feed back on products. They would have a green pond, chemical added and over a period of a month the water would clear up. It does depend on how green the pond is and how much algae is in the pond. But once under control and adding chemicals weekly algae growth is at a minimum. I don't personally use chemicals and find them a waste of money since I don't care if I have algae growing on the sides of the pond, since the UV light will keep the pond clear, and clarity to me is what is important so you can see your fish
As for plants they compete for the same nutrients as the algae so the more plants you have the less nutrients the algae has to grow. However whether or not it is the plants or the bacteria in the bog filters I can't say, it could be a combination of both. That being said there are results of having plants/ a bog filter in helping with algae growth. This is again for the single cell floating algae, not the carpet algae that grows on the sides of the pond.
As mentioned my data comes from having my own ponds and working at a koi store with ponds and customer feed back. Also from browsing the internet you can find all kinds of information on these topics.
Why were the fish left like that?
The person no longer wanted to keep their pond so the first step was re-homing the fish.

He has had to add more duckweed a few times now. It is not only for the fish but when there is a lot he scoops some duckweed out for his chickens and ducks.
they probably ate all of it in a week. have you ever owned koi before?
I don’t see the point of having a pond absolutely covered in duckweed what are you supposed to look at you just as well have a patch of grass
To mitigate evaporation in the summer months and to provide healthy food for the fish. Practicality is sometimes more important than looking appealing year round. Plus did you not see that 1/3 is not even fully covered?
Ponds covered in green also help with breeding

I would have to disagree with that. You may not be able to see the fish all the time but they are definitely going to be happier in this much larger pond with protection and loots off food. A clear open pond allows you to see the fish better but doesn't mean it is any better than a pond that keeps its natural color with plants and etc.
On his pond there is a spot that stays empty of duckweed all the time, so when he feeds them you can see all the fish.
When making a pond you need to take into account that you want to give the fish the best home you can as well as personally be satisfied with how it looks. And his goal was to make it look like a natural pond.

They are doing well. Green water and duckweed on the surface doesn't mean the pond is unhealthy. The green gives it a more natural pond look, and the duckweed acts as food plus a nitrates absorber. Both also help make it harder for predators to see them.
And the koi should be much happier in the new pond, they went from a small pond to a large 12,000 gallon pond. So a lot more space for them to swim.

I say get a trailer double axle let it carry the weight and the truck to carry supplies
I've thought about doing that. But I don't do this to often. Plus my truck isn't the strongest, so pulling a trailer might not work so well with my current truck. Also I'd have to store the trailer, so just using my truck is the best at the moment. If I do this more often then a trailer would be good.
@@vonponics even a small 5x8 trailer would work then your truck you have now would carry on the tongue would be like carrying in the truck 3-400lbs max . Evern one of those fold up trailers would do just cant drive on the hwy with them or you not supposed to .

Well technically speaking if you know what you are doing you can keep them in that smaller tub for a good amount of time. Its not ideal for the fish since it is not that big especially given the size of the fish, but it will work.
Keeping fish in a smaller tub is also done many times when someone has a large pond and needs to treat some fish. This is typically done based on the medication and how many gallons the medication works for. Also just for quarantining new fish in general, before you put them in your pond.
To make it safe for the fish all you really have to do is change some of the water on a daily basis and not feed the fish that much. This way the fish aren't producing as much waste plus you are removing fish waste every time you change the water. In addition having an aerator is a must, so that the fish don't lack in oxygen.
So therefore if you know what you are doing it is perfectly safe for the fish. Not ideal but safe.

If they didnt include info then its safe to assume it doesnt exist, whether theyre liars or lazy either way they are wrong and should fix it. He said its his friends fish and calling it a rescue implies his friend would let them die.
