What is it like to buy koi in Japan?
20 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Build a Koi Pond
Steve Walker and his son Jeff established Sacramento Koi in May of 2000 based on their love for koi and set out to build the perfect koi pond. Every they make the long journey to Niigata Prefecture, Japan to visit breeders and hand pick the best koi fish to bring back and sell to local customers!
I love that he is not a snob about it, no discrimination between expensive koi and cheaper koi. He loves the hobby so much he is happy if anyone has a koi.
I definitely agree. You could tell when he was talking about American koi that he was happy for the people who enjoy having them, he just has his own preferences ^^
The way he takes care of the lady's fish. 🥺 Also, the picture of the Carp cracked me up!
Brought a tear to my eye when he promised to take care of that lady's fish for life.
Koi is love, koi is life

indeed.... couldn't agree more....
I had the opportunity to visit Dr. Walker's house 20+ years ago and check out his pond and fishes. He is a very nice man and knows how to build ponds correctly. I'm glad he is still in business and doing well. His video on what is it like to buy koi in Japan made me feel like I was right there on the trip.
There’s something about watching fish swim that is calming.
I love how he loves a koi just bc it’s first owner loved it. It’s nice to see someone who isn’t a snob.
This was a great video. I already like Koi, but his explanations were so good, it gave me a greater understanding and appreciation for the different types of Koi. Also, his passion and emotion really came through. It was beautiful to see.
I love this man he explains what he’s selling, but he has passion for what he does. I seen him on a CZcams video I believe with his son and was impressed by his knowledge respect for the Japanese people and all the incredible accomplishments Japanese people have done for the koi in general. I live in Michigan I am a senior been married 54 years and three years ago. We had a pond and establish farm pond with no fish as winter kill have taken everything out 10 years ago so after watching this gentleman’s beautiful video and his Japanese fish.We bought garden-variety koi we are nothing special to us us we love the yellow and I had splashing of orange and black and white . they are mutts my golden retriever has a huge Pedegree, which I ignore and just love them as my best bud . thank you sir, for bringing koi in to my life. they have tripled their size into years some reaching 14 inches considering this is a Michigan in that beautiful weather like California. We have been very lucky our border collie loves to be outside, and when a herring comes in, she comes and tells us so we can shoot it away. if I was a rich person with money ha ha I would definitely buy some of your koi. what I love them anymore I doubt it.. sincerely yours one of your fans from Michigan Margie
What a fantastic gentleman.
If I ever make my way to the other side of the pond, I'll visit the store
I absolutely love your videos!! They're clean, sharp, and very knowledgeable! Keep up the great work!!! ❤❤❤
Wow so lovely to have a place like that with a pond full of super beautiful kois! Love it😍💗
The owner's pond itself. This has got to be the best pond. Thanks for sharing.
Incredible back yard housing spectacular Koi, and the filtration system is well thought out for sure. 👍
I could listen to Steve all day. That man has wealth of knowledge and a great story teller.
He has some great videos on their web page at Sacramento Koi. They are super friendly and helpful people.
Loved the video! Sacramento koi is a great place to do business with!
This video was genuinely fantastic.
Very nice video, very educational. Thank you so much for posting it.

What a nice surprise, Steve is so knowledgeable, and I love his beautiful Koi, and his backyard design. Always learning new things, Thanks George for the take along.
we need a home tour of ur aquariums as soon as possible😃
They had the Absolute Best Videos of Sacramento Koi going to Japan buying the koi from breeders for their store to sell. Sometimes a customer would go with them to pick some out for themselves. Sometimes Steve here would pick some out per customers wish lists. They were the most fun honest koi videos to watch. But I haven't seen them put one up in a while and I miss them. Just a really nice honest guy who went to Japan & bought Koi for his store!
Loving the koi videos.
I like when i spend a lot of time with koi .It was so magical❤️
Beautiful Fish!
I have to agree with everyone else, this guy is amazing. I've seen probably 100s of koi videos and while always cool its not like this video, these fish and this old awesome guy has made me really interested in getting some koi.
It was great learning about conformation in koi, something I had wanted to learn a bit about.
And, good handling of the fish, George!
loving the koi
I love the black and orange fish!😍
I recall seeing his video years ago. Amazing guy
Amazing looking fish
Japanese koi have always looked, to me, like they’ve been carefully painted. Like an artist has made it their life’s mission to study and paint the fish. I keep saying ’one day,’ to owning my own koi pond, but I don’t think I’ll ever be in the position to make it reality. So…I live vicariously through these CZcams videos of other peoples beautiful koi pools! ❤
My grandmother's house in Japan has its own koi pond. Well actually it is just a pond in the garden with 20 koi in it. If you want to take care of the house, live in it and pay the taxes, (rent free), it is yours, if not we will have to demolish the house in a few years and we will have to give the koi away to people who want them. The oldest one in the pond is 70 years old.
The house is in Nara and now with the value of property in Japan, it has become too expensive for us to keep this house for no reason since we live in Tokyo and the house is just another Akiya which cost us money in taxes and maintenance but does not generate any income. We don't want to destroy it and sell the lot, because the house is 120 years old and a masterpiece of old architecture and the garden is 250 years old and another masterpiece of traditional design with its pond and rocs and stone lanterns everywhere, but this costs the equivalent of 4000 dollars in tax every year and 3000 dollars to the gardeners to maintain the garden and the koi. That's is unfortunately too much to do for decades to come. So i am serious, if you want to live in it it is yours for 4000 a year or 3000 if you agree to take care of the garden and the koi.
@@Hannari-xt6nr Wow! If I was younger and without children I would have jumped at your offer! I would have been honoured to do the work, to just have the opportunity to experience Japan. I hope you can find a good and kind soul who will love the home and the koi as much as you do, as much as I would. It’s an amazing offer. Truly amazing!
@@twinkleandsparkle9658 Than you for the answer. I give myself another few years to find someone, but after that i will try to salvage as much as i can. What i will make sure of is that the trees and koi and the lantern as well as all the wood work in the house is not destroyed, just displaced. sadly the pond will be destroyed and the house as well. This is really what globalism does to the past, and we have to choose between our jobs or our houses.
But i really appreciate your answer. I will not let the pond suffer, that is the one thing that is certain.
learn a lot about domestic n japanesse koi... thanks for education. keep posting about koi dude.
Those koi look awesome
love your content ❤❤❤
lets get onto 4k man!!!
❤Love this video on ur Koi, Beautifully Done
Love his pond ❤ how does he keep his pond water so clear, it’s incredible
He has and sells his own filtration systems.
He literally explained it @8:22
maybe you should take into fact he commented this earlier on in the video before going to that part where he talks about it@@J.Sanchez210BxB
U need uv lamp
It's so amazing to have a home the American koi is blessed but she's soooo pretty❤
I Used to have a extremely old koi from Japan and it’s a doitsu Showa too, and my father said it’s around 83 years old!!
That looks like a swimming pool that was converted into a pond. Nothing wrong with that. Stunning fish 🤩
It's a scratch built koi pond. Not a former
pool
He/They specialize in building Koi ponds. Sacramento Koi.
@@annh8885 lol
This made me feel better, I have a koi which right now is disoriented and dying. I can't do anything to save it. Thanks for another great video!
Love Sacramento koi! You need to stop by koi enterprise! Anthony is so humble and knowledgeable you won't regret going! Also you should stop by aquarium and reptile depot in citrus heights. California needs an aquashella!
Incredible
I love the koi vids
That’s amazing..
Tancho ochiba is ace ! On the dream list
Fish made me do it! 😍🎣
This is the best channel
Beauty!
just subscribed wish my pond was big enough 🎉🎉🎉
I love kio fish ❤
As a non koi expert, that grey domestic koi is the most beautiful.
That is a gorgeous Showa, my goodness!!!
Maaaan you were 10 minutes away from me 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😭😭 Sacramento in the house ‼️
what i've noticed about the older gentlemen and this hobby is that they're all well educated about how the filtration system works
Aw! They’re like underwater doggies! So cute!
Wonderful🎉
Such beautiful colors and patterns
Loved this!
nice
i love koi♡
this is amezing
Incredible pond. I'm curious as to weather he adds any chlorine to the hot tub, I would be worried if it goes into the pond with any splash.
I actually like the one with the unusual color the most.
I love my koi. I don't know the Japanese names, and I have them mixed in with goldfish that were saved from others ponds but big orangey eats from our hands. I spend hours in our little oasis in the desert.
U have beautiful KOI they glowing like painting ❤😍
I caught one fishing in a lake 50 years ago and it weighed about 15 pounds . That was when I learned never lift one up by the gills for they will crush your fingers.
Tha doitsu showa koi is so beautiful
Doitsu are the best the lines so clean
It's weird seeing a young lad like yourself enjoying and respecting the company of older people. Lovely visit.
Hello, I would love to see Japanese Rice fish - Medaka, also known as "minikoi"😍
All those koi are beautiful fish and deserve to live out their fabulously color lives in peace and contentment. And of course, have babies!
Wow
Beautiful fish ❤
I've definitely seen much bigger koi in asia fish farm, but nevertheless beautiful fish though and educational videos
Beautiful and Big Chagoi... What size is it?
Charlotte ain’t no Koi Fish, she’s a super amazing Shiny Magikarp 💅
where are your kois give us some updates about them please
Bravo from Romania Dracula land ❤🎉
Thats a big ass carp, for sure.
George I love you
He could be right about most US breeders only keeping 60% of their koi and the Japanese 3%, I don't know, so I can't argue. However, some US breeders are far more selective than just 3%. Hanover Koi Farms in Pennsylvania, for example, I know for a fact will spawn 4,000,000 fry every year and they cull 90% of that spawn three times. So, out of about 90 spawns they end up with about 4,000,000 fry. After the first 90% cull, they end up with 400,000 fry that they keep for about two months. After the second cull, they only keep 40,000 of that 400,000 and after the third cull, they only keep 4,000 fish, which is what they end up selling to the public. That's a 90%/90%/90% cull rate out of 4 million fish down to just 4 thousand. Do the math: 4,000/4,000,000 = .001 x 100 = a .1% keep rate. Not 60%, not 3%, Hanover Koi Farms only keeps .1%. Not all breeders are the same despite what they say the average breeder is doing.
If you would like to learn more about koi and see more koi, this is the go to channel
This really made me appreciate koi more, I mean I’ve always thought they were beautiful but didn’t give them much consideration
That’s how you should actually make a pond. Sac koi is so good for educating people about koi as well
“She knows it. She knows she’s pretty.”
Man all of those fish are pretty.
I had to move abruptly and din't have time to dig a pond so I bought an above-ground pool and converted a rain barrel into a filter! Video on my channel
Well, looks like I may have a new hobby!
Charlotte what a nice name for koi fish
I love that he kept his word to the woman who sold the domestic koi. USA baby! That’s a man of honor now. Such a rare fish could have easily sold for top dollar.
How does prevent herons. I don't see any nets
