How to paint the Cadian Banner for Astra Militarum command squad! Super simple and fast tutorial!

I had planned to just paint the command squad by myself but once I got to the banner, I decided that it might be worth a tutorial! Banners really stand out on the battlefield and people tend to pick up those models for a closer look, so it's good to have some confidence painting them! We don't all have to produce Michelangelo level free hand artworks on them though, just paint them up to a level where you're happy with them!

I found your channel a few days ago with the new ordnance batteries and have been watching all of your cadian videos and plan to watch your others as well. While I've never stopped building, I have been out of the paining game for a long time and want to start getting back into it. Your videos are great because you talk through the steps and show the steps as you're doing them. So many tutorials just say do this, do that but do not actually show how to do it. You've quickly become my favorite channel for painting tutorials!

Painting banners is something I've never gotten used to. I loved the old WHFB army books when they had full colour banners in them that you could just photocopy and stick on. They never lasted well before needing replaced though so this video is great for making them less intimidating, cheers.

Cool Video Andy. As to certain parts of the mini drawing the eye of someone looking at it. When I started painting around 30 years ago someone (Neil Feldwick I think?) told me that "Faces and Bases make your minis look Ace's!"
Faces and bases for sure still holds true.
Any advice on painting in the folds? I always had trouble with the old ones.
That’s the trick. When your layering you don’t paint in the folds. You just leave those parts at the contrast wash stage.

The scary thing about flags, banners, and standards is that you usually only have one of them to paint so there’s more pressure to get it right 😅

As I'm nearing that part of the set myself, a question: Is there a way in modern Warhammer to do unique/empty banners instead of the pre-molded ones like here? I'd love to go with my own iconography, but have no idea how to change the flag to an 'empty' one. Any ideas/pointers? (If there's a 3d printing solution, I'd love to know where to purchase the stl!)
There are indeed options. I would go on places like eBay and type in warhammer flag and see what pops up. Some old world warhammer flags are perfect For it. Also standard historical modles have set plain flags that you mite be able to use.

any recommendations for a better white than corax white?
Yeah I’ve done a few videos on painting white-best advice is go outside of the citadel range for white-you need a good strong pigmented paint, pro acryl bold titanium white is one of my faves!
@@MediocreHobbies cheers just corax is just so much worse but scared to step away from citadel all my paint is from them.
@@cobbnobb it's the only colour that I'd recommend going outside of the range for even if it's all you use, corax white just doesn't work well! honestly just get one good white from somewhere else and keep with citadel for the rest, it's all you need and you'll have a much better time!

A lot of nice effects that you accomplished by using contrast paints got lost when you put layer paints on top, almost making the entire contrast stage redundant. Maybe I am not seeing the shades and gradients on the screen...
I use contrast paints to get a quick base cost on models, I don’t really use them for “contrast”! The layering is where I add simple light and shadow but I don’t do much of it!
I gave my flag bearer a melts gun, I’m too scared for the freehand necessary for the wording

Nope not at all. Normal 25mm for basic infantry and then they jump to 28mm for karsikins and the command squad.
are you still going to paint a Russ tank?
Oh yes. I had planned on doing it very soon. But some companies have reached out for some extra pieces for the russ kit so I’m waiting for that to arrive to get stuck in.
