Chris Stuckmann reviews Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones. Directed by Steven Spielberg
Little known fact: Daniel Day-Lewis spent months perfecting his accent for this role and insisted on minimal contact with the crew for fear that their accents would throw him off. He also insisted that everyone on set refer to him as Mr. President.
Pat Adams Watch 'In the Name of the Father', he has to have a Belfast accent for this role and many people would just go for the cliched irish accent which everyone thinks we speak in, some crappy Kerry accent that is laughable, but he got a voice coach and perfected it to the point that I thought it was actually someone from Belfast when I saw my parents watching it for the first time. He would only speak in the accent and spent nights in a jail with crew members throwing water and abuse at him
Well actually he didn’t insist, Steven Spielberg chose to call everyone on set by their character names, Steven called Daniel “Mr President” and he would call Sally Field “Molly” or “Mrs.Lincoln”
Daniel took the role as seriously as Abe took his role as President. I say that seriously because Abe was by far the greatest who ever was or ever will be President of this great land.
On and offset Daniel Day Lewis stayed in character as Bill the butcher when they were filming gangs of New York. He’s an incredibly experienced actor and takes his work very seriously.
I love your reviews Chris and this is definitely one of my favorites. You've definitely piqued my interest to see this movie even more so than I had already wanted. I'm a big fan of Spielberg and I love dialogue-driven movies, so I'll be all over this when it comes out next week.
Finally seen this movie. I was putting it off for awhile because I was unsure if it would be worth 2 hours of my time. Man was I dumb. This movie was wonderful! It took me into a place in American history that I believe needed to be told. To show younger people how hard a man with a vision MUST work to make a place for generations to be proud of. It also shows that even if "white people" are considered "racist" then and even now, many still know the right thing must be done. Because of his words, thoughts, and works we can see his vision growing stronger everyday in everyone. People may still be racist but they still believe a man earns the right to be free right from birth and NO man can take that from him. Makes me proud to be an American and proud of what our forefathers fought and sought for. They may have made many mistakes but I feel they have amended some through ink and blood.
When i was in college, i watched this film with my class We had to do a report on it I actually really loved it! And i got an A+ for my analysis and opinion of it!
Great review, Chris! I just saw the movie a few hours ago and LOVED it. I'm really into the historical stuff, and everything about this movie was fantastic to me. Daniel Day Lewis needs to have that Oscar trophy mailed to his house right now, lol. Honestly, I had no issues with it; it's probably my favorite movie of the year.
great review Chris, i was hoping that this film was gonna kick ass and thanks your recommendation i see i had nothing to worry about. i will go out and watch this film on opening weekend!
Glad to hear you like Munich! I just saw it for the first time a week ago and was really invested and engaged. Eric Bana got snubbed by the Academy for even a nomination.
Mr. Stuckmann, Have you noticed how many movies that have received an A+,A, A- and B+ grading from you this year? I think this has been one heck of a year for films so far and there still is a few more potential greats left to come. Just wanted to see if you had noticed that. I greatly enjoy your reviews and look for forward to your future ones.
Spielberg is my favourite director so naturally I'm excited for this movie. I don't think it will top War Horse though which is in my opinion the best movie of the last 6 years. The fact that it was co-written by my favourite screenwriter Richard Curtis elevated my happiness. Still I'm sure that Lincoln will be an excellent movie.
Spielberg is generally fantastic, but he's made some unfortunate films recently particularly War Horse and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Year Skull. Lincoln and The Terminal I consider to be just fine
Yes, and he's also directed Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, Schindler's List, E.T., Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third kind, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I cant wait to see this, Daniel day Lewis, Joseph Gordon Levett, Jackie Earl Haley. Those are three of my favorite actors, and in one movie! I have to see itb
I know it came out a while ago but, you really need to watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog! It has action but the conversations they have are the best parts. It really show cases Neil Patrick Harris and how wonderfully amazing he is :D
I guess a very good or delightful thing about a movie like this - ie a talking movie (as referred to by Chris here) - is that one can watch it several times. Like the Zodiac (starring Mark Ruffalo). I hope this is an accurate / similar / relevant example.
On what planet is it required to use Google in order to understand a movie? The story should stand on its own. And for the record, I DID read the Wikipedia summary while I saw this online, but I still couldn't follow it. I'm certainly not the first critic to dislike a movie because I found it confusing.
DDL as Lincoln is EASILY 1 of it not the Greatest Acting performance i have ever witnessed...Taking on a Towering Historical figure Like Abraham Lincoln and bringing him to LIFE on screen like never before is nothing short of Amazing to me...Was so impressed with every nuance of Lincoln by DDL in this Role...And the Movie was GREAT!! from Top to bottom in my opinion
cool, i'll like to see this!:-) and by the way Chris, you'll love Skyfall! in my opinion its better than Casino Royal! and i think the acting of Judi Dench is fantastic, defiantly her best performance Great review anyways!:-)
Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsesse, Alfred Hitchcock and Christopher Nolan are my favorite directors. MOST of them made their most memorable movies before I was born. I`m fifteen, born 97 ;)
When a review by Chris Stuckmann is nothing but dialogue, that dialogue has to be compelling, it has to be interesting and he does a really good job of that :p
Noooo! I missed that. I got a bootleg and it was very dark and hazy, that's probably why. I'll look at it again and adjust the hue. Then maybe the Blacks will pop right out at me along with good dialogue, fully developed characters, et al. "Everybody in it but Black people" was suppose to be tongue-in-cheek.
I hated Lincoln because I didn't understand a word of it. I'm not American, so I know very little of the Civil War other than it exists. I don't even know the warring sides or their goals, so whenever two opposing commanders were talking, I kept asking myself "Who's he? Is he on Lincoln's side? What the hell's going on?" There were so many characters that talked in political jargon that their meaning was completely lost on me. If you asked me so sum up the movie, I wouldn't know where to begin.
Just read a bio of Lincoln for the year 1864. And yeah, sometimes Lincoln could be a condescending jerk, boring and even corrupt (though not for his own benefit -- to keep in power.) So what? He also did a lot of wonderful things, in both person-to-person and in his job, which he conceived to be keeping the Union together while simultaneously eliminating slavery, in just a few years. I wish his critics would do even one-tenth of what he accomplished for humanity.
Those articles are not really accurate. Truth is Lincoln was abbot of a jerk toward the blacks until he first hand experienced how useful, important, and talented they are. This shift had him change his mind and that's what helped abolish slavery.
To say Spielberg studied Lincoln for 12 years before production is a bit misleading. This movie has been in development since 2004 and has been delayed over and over again.
Little known fact: Daniel Day-Lewis spent months perfecting his accent for this role and insisted on minimal contact with the crew for fear that their accents would throw him off. He also insisted that everyone on set refer to him as Mr. President.

He would only speak in the accent and spent nights in a jail with crew members throwing water and abuse at him
Wow. Mr. President actor.

Daniel Day-Lewis isn't one of the best actors of OUR times - he's one of the best actors of ALL TIME...
It's not even debatable.
Death By Internet He's THE best actor of all time.
Death By Internet yeah.. too bad he's retired
Even the Academy knows it, and they dont know shit sometimes...
Aye sir!
Daniel Day Lewis was bad ass in Last Of The Mohicans.
Chris grew up with Abraham Lincoln
I can't imagine Tommy Wiseau being President Lincoln
I can imagine him trying to be
A Troll Thanks a lot, now I just did!
"So anyway Jefferson, how's your sex life?"
Why, the Senate, whyyyy?!))
Oh hi John
"Like a play. Like a staged play". I wouldn't mention a play when talking about Lincoln.
A Troll This is a severely under appreciated comment
You know what's even funnier? When Spielberg said in an interview that it was an interesting experience to "shoot _Lincoln_ in digital".
Can you please review there will be blood?
This is honestly one of Spielberg’s best. I never have been so captivated by an otherwise “boring film” before.
Tommy Lee Jones is fuckin awesome and badass
Steven Spielberg has proven that after Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, you can make great movies.
What sucked in that movie was mainly Lucas' script. And well, the cgi monkeys
+Samuli Hynninen basically everything George lucas
And aliens.
I watched it to day and I absolutely love it. Fantastic film.
An absolute pleasure to watch, very well structured and very well acted. I have to give it an A personally.
DUDE! Love the new intro! Kick ass! Great review as always Chris!
Daniel Day-Lewis + Steven Spielberg = AWESOME!
That`s all I`m going to say...
I love your reviews Chris and this is definitely one of my favorites. You've definitely piqued my interest to see this movie even more so than I had already wanted. I'm a big fan of Spielberg and I love dialogue-driven movies, so I'll be all over this when it comes out next week.

When i was in college, i watched this film with my class
We had to do a report on it
I actually really loved it!
And i got an A+ for my analysis and opinion of it!
I love the new intro/logo thing. Really would like to see this.
I can't even study for a test for 2 minutes
SPOILER ALERT LINCOLN GETS ASSASSINATED!
Spoiler Alert: it doesn't actually happen on-screen.
Great film, but I hated how Spielberg dragged out the ending. Should've ended with the butler watching Lincoln take his final walk.
Had the same thought.
Yes
Great review, Chris! I just saw the movie a few hours ago and LOVED it. I'm really into the historical stuff, and everything about this movie was fantastic to me. Daniel Day Lewis needs to have that Oscar trophy mailed to his house right now, lol. Honestly, I had no issues with it; it's probably my favorite movie of the year.
Great channel Chris, saw almost all videos this week. Greetings from Brazil.
great review Chris, i was hoping that this film was gonna kick ass and thanks your recommendation i see i had nothing to worry about. i will go out and watch this film on opening weekend!
Glad to hear you like Munich! I just saw it for the first time a week ago and was really invested and engaged. Eric Bana got snubbed by the Academy for even a nomination.
There will be blood is my favorite Daniel day Lewis.
My favorite Daniel day Lewis is Gangs of New York
They used the sound of Lincoln's actual pocket watch.
Now THAT is dedication to being accurate.
Your new intro or title card rocks! I guess I will see this sometime.
Love your reviews Chris, cant wait to hear youre opinion on skyfall.
Love the new Intro.
And Great review once again.
Keep it up!!!
And I'll recommend you to my friends
So that they. . .
Will get STUCKMANNIZED!!!
I love Spielberg but his movies recently havent been the best that I know he can make. Im interested in seeing lincoln though.
Mr. Stuckmann, Have you noticed how many movies that have received an A+,A, A- and B+ grading from you this year? I think this has been one heck of a year for films so far and there still is a few more potential greats left to come. Just wanted to see if you had noticed that. I loved this movie. Great review from the past, Chris!
I think Tommy Lee Jones' performance in this movie is very underrated. He was absolutely fantastic
diggin the new intro graphics :)
Awesome Intro Chris. Liking the New Intro.
The War Horse and Adventures of Tintin was good as well after he finished Munich.
Loved the new intro dude
Can you please review Schindler's List and E.T. The Extraterrestrial. Thanks. I really like to hear your thoughts about these cinematic gems.
@ChrisStuckmann are you going to review the dark knight returns part1?
Still haven’t gotten a round to seeing this one yet. Thanks for the review Chris. 👍🏽😃✌🏽
How good was There Will be Blood?
Hall Of The Vardy Good film. Very well acted. Depressing but very good.
@@thecontinuingadventuresoflenny damn A+? I'm cool with depressing films as long as they're done well, which is what it sounds like.
Hall Of The Vardy It’s a solid A. The acting is outstanding all the way around.
@@thecontinuingadventuresoflenny ah shit I didnt even know you did reviews. I'll check you out
Great to hear this. Can't wait to watch it.
have you seen any of James Spader's other movies? and would you ever review them?
Spielberg is generally fantastic, but he's made some unfortunate films recently particularly War Horse and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Year Skull. Lincoln and The Terminal I consider to be just fine
I feel like I'm the only person in the world who genuinely loves "The Terminal". There's just something about that movie, man
+Tyler Timothy Reurink Me too in regards to War Horse. I enjoyed it beginning to end.
Can hardly wait. I'll be there it's first weekend.
One of the most beautiful movies I've seen in a while.
How come you did not review indiana jones and the Kingdom of the CS? I would like to see that
how could people dislike chris` reviews? they are awesome
Just watched this review. Very good points. I was infuriated that Tommy Lee Jones didn’t win the Oscar.
I know it came out a while ago but, you really need to watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog! It has action but the conversations they have are the best parts. It really show cases Neil Patrick Harris and how wonderfully amazing he is :D
Thanks for the early review Chris!
I know, I actually go to school also and I am a film fan like Chris Stuckmann (except instead of The Signs, Pulp Fiction got me into loving movies)
I guess a very good or delightful thing about a movie like this - ie a talking movie (as referred to by Chris here) - is that one can watch it several times.
Like the Zodiac (starring Mark Ruffalo). I hope this is an accurate / similar / relevant example.
Nice new title screen!
how long was this movie ???
On what planet is it required to use Google in order to understand a movie? The story should stand on its own. And for the record, I DID read the Wikipedia summary while I saw this online, but I still couldn't follow it. I'm certainly not the first critic to dislike a movie because I found it confusing.
Can't wait to see Lincoln. Daniel Day Lewis is going to knock it out of the park again.
DDL as Lincoln is EASILY 1 of it not the Greatest Acting performance i have ever witnessed...Taking on a Towering Historical figure Like Abraham Lincoln and bringing him to LIFE on screen like never before is nothing short of Amazing to me...Was so impressed with every nuance of Lincoln by DDL in this Role...And the Movie was GREAT!! from Top to bottom in my opinion

in my opinion its better than Casino Royal!

Great review anyways!:-)
Indeed!
I watched tbhis back in High School, I had no Idea it was directed by Steven Speilberg. Daniel Day Louise was amazing.
Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsesse, Alfred Hitchcock and Christopher Nolan are my favorite directors. MOST of them made their most memorable movies before I was born. I`m fifteen, born 97 ;)
Congrats on being 25 now lol
excelent review chris!!
abe lincoln has an eagle in this, right?
I`ve probably seen half of Spielbergs films. And if I didn`t know who Spielberg was I would never have guessed he directed all those films!
nice intro, and great review
Great review!
so how were the vampires in the movie
Tommy Lee Jones has to get a grammy! He was witty and a dead on impression of Sevens. Great movie
I think it's interesting that Daniel Day-Lewis played played a character in Gangs of New York who hated Lincoln.
Oh, Ok, thanks for your answer.
I was wondering why I hadn't seen a lot of Chris Stuckmann in my subscriptions for a while , CZcams had unsubscribed ugh ! Anyways re-subscribed :)
Just saw this movie. Very good.
If I remember correctly you gave War Horse the same rating....does that mean it is just as good as War Horse or do you think Lincoln is better?
When a review by Chris Stuckmann is nothing but dialogue, that dialogue has to be compelling, it has to be interesting and he does a really good job of that :p
loved tommy lee jones character.. really strong performance
What could have the film done better to have gotten a better rating?
new intro, sweet
Talking about Licoln, in a Super Mario Shirt.. #likeaboss
I miss these kinds of reviews.
nice t-shirt! my first name is Mario and my middle name is Luigi!!
Verily, I say unto you, well put.
Like the new intro
Loving the new intro!
hey chris when you gonna review all Quentin Tarantino's movies.
Noooo! I missed that. I got a bootleg and it was very dark and hazy, that's probably why. I'll look at it again and adjust the hue. Then maybe the Blacks will pop right out at me along with good dialogue, fully developed characters, et al.

Glitcher2000
why watch it if not American? I'm just curious
So you only hate it because you can't understand it?
Just read a bio of Lincoln for the year 1864. And yeah, sometimes Lincoln could be a condescending jerk, boring and even corrupt (though not for his own benefit -- to keep in power.) So what? I love talking movies. :)
He does tend to do tricks for treats A.K.A. making a movie with awards in mind. Still a great director.
I'm mainly seeing this because of Day-Lewis and Jackie Earle Haley XD
To say Spielberg studied Lincoln for 12 years before production is a bit misleading. This movie has been in development since 2004 and has been delayed over and over again.
love the new intro Chris!
the spielberg films you listed were great blockbusters, but not near as influential as psycho or vertigo
i cannot wait see this freaking movie daniel day lewis will win best actor for sure
If only Daniel Day Lewis would do more movie roles.
I loved this movie
I wonder how much of the Spielberg Schmaltz we get in this movie.
