I actually came up with an idea for a movie awhile back about a guy who travels back in time to kill himself, and one day while I was talking about it my brother said "So basically Looper, right?" I had no idea Looper existed. So I looked it up and apparently I made up an idea for a movie that had already been made. Oh well.
99.5% of movies coming out today are premised on an idea that has been done before due to the saturation of movies/books out there and because only certain ideas can engage a wide ranges of audiences. The key to success is the presentation of the idea, not the idea itself.
If he's going back to commit suicide by killing his younger self and erasing his life after that point, that's not been done so you should give it a shot.
I'm so relieved to hear that someone else loved this movie besides me. this is one of my favorite movies, but part of that is due to the time in my life in which I saw it. watching it now makes me think of that time in my life in a sad, nostalgic kind of way.
My problem with the movie was the whole telekinesis thing. It appeared in the plot once, disappeared , then BAM! It was suddenly the most important thing ever.
CaptainMonocle07 Well maybe it's used as a twist for the plot. It's a device for the movie to be exciting when you find out that it's actually a big thing.
CaptainMonocle07 well with twists you cant keep mentioning things that are relating to the twist without the audience figuring the twist out u gotta keep it on the down low
CaptainMonocle07 actually, the way they built it up was perfect. 1. They mention and show telekinesis at the beginning. But Joe mentions "these people aren't superheroes, they just float quarters, pretty lame actually" 2. They then introduce the Rainmaker as a problem in the future, and can't explain how (s)he possibly could've taken over all by his/herself. 3. Then by the time they introduce the kid and his incredibly powerful abilities, the idea of the Rainmaker actually makes sense. "Wow, the Rainmaker is a person that actually has really powerful telekinetic abilities, unlike every other TK, I should've seen that coming"
They were just planting the seed at the start so when they came back to it, it would be a big kinda "ahhhh, that makes sense" moment for the audience rather than be a completely new plot point. Unfortunately I figured the TK thing out before they even showed the mother having it. It was the most obvious reason this "rainmaker" dude was able to take down those syndicates by himself, some sort of advanced TK. Still a great movie though.
YOU ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE GOT IN! As soon as the online box office opened I got in line but by the time I got onto the online store all the films I wanted to see were sold out. Great review Chris!
OK, I'm man enough to admit when I've made a misstep. I rewatched the movie and loved it. Before, I disliked it because it was so unlike what I had expected. This time, I understood the characters a lot better, and I understood what kind of film Rian Johnson was making. It's not a movie I could watch over and over, but I do think it's a great modern sci-fi film.
Your excitement for Looper is how I feel about Cloud Atlas, after watching the 5 minute trailer, and still not knowing the plot, I am so excited to see how they manage the concept of reincarnation from the past, present, and future. The cast is absolutely wonderful, and I am particularly looking forward to Hugo Weaving's performance. I really hope you give a good review, Chris.
That's so cool! You are so lucky Chris! Looper is in my top 3 for sure for most anticipated movies of the rest of 2012 and you got to attend the premiere in an awesome theater and see JGL and the director. Man I wish I was in your place. I still want to go to a festival like that and a movie premiere. I did get to witness Chris Nolan's hand/footprint ceremony at Grauman's in July though. A lot of the stars were there including JGL and I was able to get 4 of their autographs. Amazing experience
Yes! I knew this was going to be good. The Brick director reunited with JGL, a stellar supporting cast and fantastic sci-fi plot only could mean 3 words: Have To See!
Hey Chris, I'v been hearing good things about another movie at TIFF called Silver Linings Playbook staring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. Did you see it and what were your thoughts. Hope a review is to follow in the coming weeks.
It's good to know the film I'm waiting for so eagerly is so great. I just have to wait for it to be in French theater. I recently discovered your channel and I really like your reviews. From what I can see we have the same vision. Thank you for all your hard work and I can't wait for more (especially Cloud Atlas).
That may be true. I just like hearing his reviews on some films when I have some down time. But he got the part wrong about them being erased. They aren't trying to create a paradox. The mob just wants the person to pay, and because it's impossible to dispose of a body in the future due to "tagging techniques" they have to sent them back in the time machine.
I thought Looper was an awesome science-fiction movie with an interesting story written by Ryan Johnson, strong and intense acting performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe Simmons, Bruce Willis as old Joe, Emily Blunt as Sara Rollins and Pierce Gagnon as Sid Harrington, good directing by Ryan Johnson and a nice message about a hitman learning to put his selfishness aside in order to help people in danger. I give Looper 4 out of 5 stars and I hope you enjoy Looper.
Great review! I don't feel like I'm quite as excited for this movie as most, but I still am looking forward to it and it's cool to see that it's good. I'm purposely staying away from the 2nd trailers.
I didn't physically walked out of the theater. Sorry I'm french. I wanted to mean it disturbed me a lot and I kept thinking about it while watching the movie
I agree the diner scenes were the best. The banter between Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis was definitely phenomenal. Definitely an original film that made you pause and think.
I finally caught this film at the local discount cinema, University Mall Theaters in Fairfax, Virginia, with two friends tonight, and we all truly liked it. It was a smart movie with a well-constructed script. The two leads, Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt, were great, and Emily Blunt was a good leading lady. Jeff Daniels turned in a terrific performance, and he just oozed a sleazy menace as the main villain. All in all, this was a very good flick.
I've been looking forward to Looper for nearly a year. I Iove Brick. Fantastic dialogue and beautifully shot. Rian Johnson is such a great writer/director, not to mention he directed two great Breaking Bad episodes, Fly and Fifty-One. Rian Johnson + Joseph Gordon Levitt. How can you possibly go wrong? The last time I saw Bruce Willis in a time travel movie was 12 Monkeys and I absolutely love that movie.
I liked Looper a lot. first time i watched it I had some disagreements with the paradox and felt they could have done a better with the plot. But, just because of this review I am going to watch it again. Thanks, Stuckmanizer 1000.
well, theoretically when it comes to time travel there are two possibilities: -when you go back in time you create a new universe, with different set of events that you're going to affect -everything has already happened before, so basically, JGL will become Bruce Willis and be sent back to the past again and again, like a loop (Looper?) I was thinking that the second possibility is the one that we're dealing with
I finally saw Looper today. I loved it. And thanks to the misleading trailers and reviews that failed to spoil the important stuff I enjoyed every second of it. Every scene surprised me and I could never predict what's going to happen next. The movie had a lot going on, the focus was not on the things that you might expect, and all of that just made the movie so fun. I should say that now that I've seen it, I can tell that not a single review told me about the movie that Looper actually is...
Can I please request a review on "5 centimeters per second" an anime film please? cause I seriously believe people should watch that film for the music, animation and emotion
i can't wait to see this movie, i was worried it might be like In Time (which turned out to be just..OKAY but not as great as i expected) Only thing i don't get though, is how does the fact that they (people in the future) send criminals from the future to the present to be killed mean that the criminals are never even alive and never become criminals. I mean wouldn't it make more sense if they send a note to the present to tell the present person to kill the criminal who's still a baby or...?
We can make a lot of different types of stories based upon a simple educative concept, take looper for example, the main idea of the film is the importance of the proper breeding of our children and with that idea the film is being constructed through a series of sci fi elements or events that will not be as bad if that principle (the importance of the proper breeding ) will be present, and they make it cool with a time travel story that is actually relevant and important for the story.
WAIT, maybe I'm missing something, but there is something I don't understand. If the older version is being sent back in time, he would have already committed the crime, so why would they be erased from existence?
Well... he did adore Inception, which was overloaded by exposition?? Rian did cut exposition out of the movie. The movie is not about timetravel/explaining-stuff... but characters.
Okay,Dragonball Evolution with Emmy Rossum,Jamie Chung.I haven't seen it, but I heard it got bad reviews.Who knows, maybe the third director, who did Run Lola Run,which I liked, will help make Cloud Atlas better than I think it is.
Looper is also very smart because it does the time travel thing right. Things like terminator just don't make sense because if you were to kill the younger version of your target, you wouldn't of ever had the motivation to go back and kill that person in the first place
I really like this film. Young and old version of the same person both have valid points of why they should kill the other. Bruce Willis shines in films like these. 😃😃
lol so much drama... Annnnyways, thanks for another solid review Chris. I am coming to consider your reviews indispensable when deciding what to go out and see :) Thanks for your time and effort.

Gutie'sCorner happens a lot, can't see every movie out there so sometime you just don't know.
You can always expand upon it to make it VERY different, even if the barebones is exactly the same.
99.5% of movies coming out today are premised on an idea that has been done before due to the saturation of movies/books out there and because only certain ideas can engage a wide ranges of audiences. The key to success is the presentation of the idea, not the idea itself.
This happened to my 2 movies ideas
If he's going back to commit suicide by killing his younger self and erasing his life after that point, that's not been done so you should give it a shot.

Same. Even now 5 yrs later after this comment. I would love to go back to 2009-2013 era
My problem with the movie was the whole telekinesis thing. It appeared in the plot once, disappeared , then BAM! It was suddenly the most important thing ever.

Still a great movie though.
I couldnt agree more
Smart, slick and original
This is my favourite film of 2012....btw great review Chris
SPOILER *but not really*
So whats up with emily blunt pretending to hold a cigarette and like, "fake smoking"??
Dylan the theme of longing for another life or things that aren’t there to happen
It is hinting she is a TK, or so i believe its mentioned in the commentary.
2 steak and eggs coming up.
And coffee... Please
Rare and scrambled
Sunny side up for me please!
You should review Predestination
Yes that is an amazing time travel movie, very good twists
And DARK
Fantastic review Chris, really looking foward to seeing this! Also looking foward to seeing your other reviews!
awesome that you got to see the premiere. where did you film this? the jack rabbit slims poster is awesome.
Great John Mcclane impression Chris!
YOU ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE GOT IN! As soon as the online box office opened I got in line but by the time I got onto the online store all the films I wanted to see were sold out. Great review Chris!
Ending was really emotional, one of my favorite movies of the year
Chris i can you review silent running and solaris two of my favourite sci fi movies. would love to hear your thoughts
OK, I'm man enough to admit when I've made a misstep. I rewatched the movie and loved it. Before, I disliked it because it was so unlike what I had expected. Great review, I had my thumb hovering over the pause button on my iPhone just in case you spoil anything lol

So glad you liked it :) But why is this video unlisted?
Yes! I knew this was going to be good. The Brick director reunited with JGL, a stellar supporting cast and fantastic sci-fi plot only could mean 3 words: Have To See!
I'm so excited for your Place Beyond the Pines review!
Looks like I'm going to have to see this one.
Looking forward to your Dredd review when it gets its US release.
Dredd 3D.
When will you get to see and review it. I'd like to know what you think.
Can someone just explain me what's with the coffee thing in the movie, where Beatrix keeps saying its "watery" or something like it?
Hey Chris, I'v been hearing good things about another movie at TIFF called Silver Linings Playbook staring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. Did you see it and what were your thoughts. Hope a review is to follow in the coming weeks.
Do you edit with iMovie?
I will be seeing this for sure. Interested to see what you think of cloud atlas
Are you going to review The Place Beyond the Pines? Great review by the way.
It's good to know the film I'm waiting for so eagerly is so great. I just have to wait for it to be in French theater. I recently discovered your channel and I really like your reviews. Omg I can't believe this was EIGHT friggin' YEARS ago lol where does the time GO?!? 🤪
hey chris. was just wondering. was it just little things with the film about narration that made it an A instead of an A+?
That may be true. I just like hearing his reviews on some films when I have some down time.
But he got the part wrong about them being erased. They aren't trying to create a paradox. The mob just wants the person to pay, and because it's impossible to dispose of a body in the future due to "tagging techniques" they have to sent them back in the time machine.

I give Looper 4 out of 5 stars and I hope you enjoy Looper.
Is there an embargo for CLOUD ATLAS reviews? When can you speak about it?
Loved this movie!!! So glad you came to Toronto here in Canada to see it. Sounded fun
Looks like one of the most intriguing movies i've seen in a whole time. Great review as always Chris!
Great news. I remember seeing the first trailer for it at IMDB and thinking... "This could be really good.". Sounds like it is. Looking forward to it.
Been looking forward to seeing this for awhile. Thanks for the review. Can't wait to check it out.
please reviee primer and upstream color by shane carruth
Chris would you consider this movie to be the "Inception" of this year?
been waiting to for your review for daysss!!!
I'm a huge JGL! fan i'm soooo looking forward to it. and why not an A+?
Great review! I don't feel like I'm quite as excited for this movie as most, but I still am looking forward to it and it's cool to see that it's good. I'm purposely staying away from the 2nd trailers.
I got out of the movie when Bruce Willis' wife was shot in the future... I thought it was impossible...
Definitely an original film that made you pause and think.
hey Chris, did you see The Place Beyond the Pines? I would like to hear your opinion, I'm looking forward to that movie :)
When is your Dredd review coming up???
Loved it. Can't believe it took me this long to see. Superb

In the words of Phil Collins "... I've been waiting for this moment... for all my life... oh lord....". Great review Chris, keep it up man.
Please get the cloud atlas review out soon
Hmm a time travel movie where Bruce Willis goes back in time to stop something bad from happening and dies at the end haven't seen that before!
whose awesome basement is that? ;) and great review! looking forward to seeing this
LOL's Your Bruce empression is great "Welcome to Da Party Pal!"--_--
I liked Looper a lot. first time i watched it I had some disagreements with the paradox and felt they could have done a better with the plot. But, just because of this review I am going to watch it again. Thanks, Stuckmanizer 1000.
Chris, next time you're in Toronto come hang out and do a movie review with me!
So would you say it is this years Drive?
well, theoretically when it comes to time travel there are two possibilities:
-when you go back in time you create a new universe, with different set of events that you're going to affect
-everything has already happened before, so basically, JGL will become Bruce Willis and be sent back to the past again and again, like a loop (Looper?)

awesome blossom! catching it on saturday :D
Hey Chris... Please Tell me Why Its Not Comparable With The Terminator...? 🤔🤔
I absolutely love JGL. One film that's really good and has JGL in it is Mysterious Skin. Definitely one to watch.
I finally saw Looper today. I loved it. And thanks to the misleading trailers and reviews that failed to spoil the important stuff I enjoyed every second of it. Every scene surprised me and I could never predict what's going to happen next. I should say that now that I've seen it, I can tell that not a single review told me about the movie that Looper actually is...
Can you do a review for 'Moon' starring Sam Rockwell? Its honestly a movie that more people should know about!
Chris, have you ever seen Unbreakable? It's a really cool performance from Bruce Willis and there's an awesome plot twist! If not, check it out.
I'll see this sometime and your Bruce Willis impression was funny.
Can I please request a review on "5 centimeters per second" an anime film please? cause I seriously believe people should watch that film for the music, animation and emotion

I thought it was ok but thought they could have done a lot more with it. They set it up well but not much happened the second half.
WAIT, maybe I'm missing something, but there is something I don't understand. If the older version is being sent back in time, he would have already committed the crime, so why would they be erased from existence?
I love coming back to these reviews after I rewatch a film a few years down the line. I'd forgotten how great Looper is/was!
How come this video doesn't show up when searching Chris' channel by "looper"? Kinda loses the point if I'd like to find an old movie review, huh?
Bruce Willis' second time travel film since '12 Monkeys' and it was great.
I got it looper movie dvd this year 2016
what a brilliant counter argument! such logic and what a delivery! i salute you, good sir!
I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS!
How is Dredd? It's got like 29 reviews and none are rotten on RT.
nice background. should use it everyday man
Like several other people have said episode 8 is in good hands. Episode 9 on the other hand I'm not so sure about
Ian Levinson Episode 9 will be great, Colin did a great job of bringing back Jurrasic World. If it's half as good as Episode 6, it will be great
Jurassic world was okay, nothing special
Joshua Myers It might rely too heavily on nostalgia.
I can't believe I have to wait until Jan 30 to see this movie here in Italy, arrrggghh
Well... he did adore Inception, which was overloaded by exposition?? Rian did cut exposition out of the movie. The movie is not about timetravel/explaining-stuff... but characters.
I know you don't do much reviews on short films but you should check out the short film TELL and maybe post the review on your website.
Okay,Dragonball Evolution with Emmy Rossum,Jamie Chung.I haven't seen it, but I heard it got bad reviews.Who knows, maybe the third director, who did Run Lola Run,which I liked, will help make Cloud Atlas better than I think it is.
Wow the plot sounds cool!
the bruce willis squint was a total WIN!
The one question I've got is: If he was this TK prodigy how come he never exhibited any TK powers as (Joseph Gordon Levitt) a grown man?
Didnt get to see argo or the master?
Looper is also very smart because it does the time travel thing right. Things like terminator just don't make sense because if you were to kill the younger version of your target, you wouldn't of ever had the motivation to go back and kill that person in the first place
good job on the Bruce Willis imitation :D
Yeah I see what you are saying. Personally I think it makes more sense to make him look like that but I understand why it could bother you.
This is still one of my favs
I really like this film. Young and old version of the same person both have valid points of why they should kill the other. Bruce Willis shines in films like these. 😃😃
yeah funny I just tried to look up Looper on his channel and this didn't come up. I had to search it in the search bar
no argo?
Please review Seven Psychopaths!!!!!! I love Martin Mcdonaugh!
looking forward to this!
lol so much drama... Annnnyways, thanks for another solid review Chris. I am coming to consider your reviews indispensable when deciding what to go out and see :) Thanks for your time and effort.
i can not wait to see this great review once again
