Chris Stuckmann reviews Total Recall, starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho and Bill Nighy. Directed by Len Wiseman.
I'm not the person acting like a 12 year old here. I'm giving my honest thoughts on a film that was purely mindless action, and well directed action at that. From the standpoint of anyone who's ever picked a camera and tried to make a film, I understand that. I'm not going to fall in line with the body of "critics" on Rotten Tomatoes just because it feels politically correct. That being said, Ebert did like it... I guess he's a mindless 12 year old as well! Yay! I'm in good company! Love ya pal!
I agree with u Chris it’s Good Movie And doesn’t deserve to be trashed, but I Disagree with ur opinion on Kurt Wimmer he’s one of the Best Writers He’s Written a lot of Great Films Equilibrium, Salt, Recruit, Street Kings, Law Abiding Citizen, Thomas Crown Affair Remake, Total Recall Remake, Point Break, Spell, and The Point Break a Remake, big deal he only has 2 Bad films Sphere and Ultraviolet which wasn’t really Wimmer’s fault cuz Sony re-edited The film against his wishes
Minority report is written by Phillip K Dick as well as Total Recall and Blade Runner. His thing was 'what was reality' so thats why the films are very similar
@@schwartzy65 How? The story for Total Recall's inspiration (We Can Remember If For You Wholesale) is extremely short and pretty much ends where they find the incompatible memories, which is like the the first 10 minutes of each of these movies?
hollywood can make a 70 year old look like a 20 year old if they want. people are attracted to all this artificial crap without even realizing it, practically mannequins.
+Nelson Villegas Yeeeaaahhh...but, being in 2017, I think we have seen a better futuristic city in another companion movie to the original Phillip K. Dick adaptation...directed by Villeneuve, btw...
I think both movies had a different kind of design. Blade Runner had a post apocalyptic too cyberpunk-ish dark world design while this movie had a balanced between future and present and it wasn't that of based on a dark world (the fact that in this movie people actually wear clothes like present time normal people, on the other hand in Blade Runner clothing fashion is too over the top. like you see stuff in animes) I think it's all depends on what do "you" prefer
Boyd Bissell Jr. yeah sadly it seems like all remakes get shit on by critics. alot of them are bad granted but there are a few gems. i dont think any of them are as good as the original but you have Karate Kid, Robocop, Total Recall and if you wanna count Dredd as a remake then i would most definitely say its better than the original. Dredd was awesome. sadly most remakes arent that great.
***** Totally agree. I even liked The Texas Chainsaw and the Halloween remake. I even liked Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm St. for what they were. I could thrash them, but I was entertained, so what's the point?
Boyd Bissell Jr. yeah... i cant agree with you on all of thoses but we all have opinions and ive always said as long as the movie is enjoyable thats all that matters.
I just watched the extended cut and it's a shame that it was not that version that was presented in theaters because it's quite different and better than the theatrical release. It's more raw(dialogues and violence), there's more better dialogues, a bit more depth to the story, a lot of scenes are filmed different...basically the extended cut makes more sense overall. Maybe people and critics would've liked it more it was that version that was presented in the first place.
Just watched this for the first time 11 years later and I gotta say I actually really loved it. Don’t get me wrong. I prefer the original but this movie had so much style and really made it it’s own story. I actually have mad respect for this remake it’s better than 99% of remakes I’ve ever seen. It deserves more respect for sure. The design on the world is absolutely breathtaking the effects are incredible.
I think the best thing I can say about this movie is that I really liked the tech and art style. Especially the Fall because it looked so heavy and industrial. Probably one of the cooler sci-fi set pieces I've seen.
I remember being 10yrs old watching the original total recall, this is when I found what EPIC meant. I really enjoy your reviews mate. You and JeremyJahn are very different but enjoy you guys both the same. Keep up the good work.
Hey Chris, I'm a big fan of your reviews and always enjoy hearing your opinions. I have 1 question that I would love for you to answer: "How do you always get such a great thumbnail image for your videos?" When I edit my videos, youtube only offers me 3 thumbnail options to choose from. Any tips you could give me on making the perfect thumbnail would be much appreciated. (Or if you could link me to a video that explains it,) Thanks!
@Chris_Stuckmann, did you by chance get to watch the directors cut of this movie? I felt that it helped the story and writing immensely and when re-watching the regular cut, I can understand your review of the plot being a bit cloudy at times. It felt to me like watching inception but someone cut 20 minutes out of the movie because it was to complicated for someone to follow. Curious on your take.
saw this movie in theaters when it came out. felt like watching it again but I just had to come to your channel and hear what you had to say about it. you're too cool man. loving that pikachu shirt xD
I tried searching for it but i don't see your Matix reviews... Where are those? What did you think? I'd really like to see what you thought of those three movies.
Yeah, the reviews on your CZcams page are really very professional, have great insight into the movie business and are very accurate! I hope so much to see more of these great reviews! Thanks for the hard work you put each and every time into these reviews on your page! You are the best!
Oh wow, I just watched Total Recall for the first time and came here to look for a review, but I was really confused with the thumbnail. I wasn't even aware there was a remake :P
Nice review, Chris. I agree that it was a much better movie than many of the critics believed. Not a home run, but a film I would see again. Loved the Arnold cut you kept using. Very funny.
Hey Chris, I'm a big fan but I was wondering, could you review "Celeste and Jesse Forever"? If I remember correctly, you said that "500 Days of Summer" was one of your favorite films. "Celeste and Jesse Forever" kinda reminds me of that movie. Love to hear your opinion on the film.
Thanks for being the only review I found that didn't shit on Jessica Biel. I can't be the only one who thinks she's been decent in a couple things and doesn't deserve nearly as much hate as she gets.
Congrats on a fair review. Nice to see at least SOME people didn't buy into the pre-determined hate. Kudos to you, I will be watching more of your reviews in future.
Hey Chris, if it reminded you of 'Minority Report', there's a good reason; Philip K Dick, the guy who wrote the short story 'Total Recall' was based off of, also wrote the short story 'Minority Report.' He also wrote the short story 'Paycheck' was based off of.
New Camera!? I like it, some constructive criticism, i would suggest fixing the mic it sounds a little muffled but awesome video nonetheless man!! i'm gonna go see this tomorrow with my dad. thanks for the review!
ok, it's now almost ten years since this movie was release, but I thought it was so much better than the original with Arnold. It felt truer to philip dicks' dystopia and more ambiguous about the dream/reality issue. Solid B
I don't know why it came up in my mind, but you could do with reviewing the original Total Recall for Feature Presentation. Paul Verhooven films are back in vogue after Helldivers 2 is basically Starship Troopers, the game.
Could you put a link to a movie's IMDB page when you review it? Like several others, the first thing I'm going to do when you mention some actors I'm not familiar with, is go check it's info. Good review. I too am a fan of the original.
First: In the original Total Recall, the bad guy was play by Ronny Cox and his name was Vilos Cohagen, not Copenhagen, that one is the capital of Denmark. Second. Kate Beckinsale is not my wife in this scene. DING.
Just watched the extended version and it's a shame they didn't release that one in theaters. Small bits but they really bring the movie together and make sense. Such a shame and it is a great standalone movie if you've forgotten most of the original like I have. Jessica Biel or Kate Beckinsale, both in their prime, which one would I have. Hmmm
Best review of this movie evar!!! Subbed due to your honesty, ignore the agenda bias critics, watch this for yourself and make up your own mind, it's a good film that hit to close for some,

I just watched this tonight and liked it. It has beautiful world design, awesome world-building, good score and great lead actor. The story is interesting in that it constantly throws curve-balls... It was good to experience once, but I don't see much re-watch value with storytelling which so heavily relies on the element of surprise. I prefer more mellow movies like Bladerunner 2049
As a whole, I agree with your positive views on Total Recall, Mr. Stuckmann, and in general. Bryan Cranston, I feel, is a versatile actor, remembering him from Malcom in the Middle to playing a role like in Total Recall, is completely different. Thanks for your honesty and tact.
Hey Chris, I just watched a couple of your reviews and I really like your style. I find that the majority of critics are very cynical and jaded, so when I run into someone like yourself who has a more "positive" view of things it is very welcome to us "glass is half full" types ;-)
actually when arnold said "consider that a divorce" it sounded pretty good.. Total Recall and True Lies were the movies where his english sounded the best
Have watched the original as a kid with my father. Then rewatched it in my teenage years a few times and watched this film too.... i dunno it looked too greenscreenish or cgi ish at that time for me.... buuuuuut gonna check it out again after your review..... 😊
My favorite Kate Beckinsale Films Underworld 1,2, And 3, Jolt, Farming, Cate Mcall, Contraband, Total Recall 2012, Whiteout, Everyone’s Fine, Nothing But The Truth, Vacancy, Snow Angels, Click, Van Helsing, Laurel Canyon, And Pearl Harbor
I like both of the original and the remake, however the remake is better, mainly because of the settings and the faithfulness to the Phillip K Dick's short story. Even Minority Report is the sequel to Total Recall.
I really like this remake. No it isn't as good as the first, but that may be down to pure nostalgia, and around the beginning of the 3rd act it has pacing issues but over all this was a really entertaining movie. I bought it on blu ray when it came out and its definitely a movie i like to watch from time to time
Since you just review a sci fi movie, can you review District? Its my all time favorite sci fi movie and has the coolest alien weapons in a movie ever. Also it has a great story and acting with emotional moments.
Why The Earth if we can have Mars? Why a Matthias if we can have a psychic Kuato? Why Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale if we can have Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin? Why a tunnel from Australia to Great Britain if we can have tunnels through the Outerspace? Why simple rebels if we can have mutants? Why a copy of Blade Runner-kinda cyberpunk atmosphere if we have already a Blade Runner? Why a jumper Colin Farrell with a mobile phone on his hand if we can have a tough Schwarzenegger breaking hands? And most important...why Kaitlyn Leeb if we can have Lycia Naff?
I wanted to like the original, but the fact that they show scenes that do not contain Arnold Schwarzenegger with zero indication that these scenes might not be real, like perhaps it was Arnold's perceived assumptions of character interactions or something, it sort of makes the whole "was it real or fake" thing vanish because these scenes make it obvious that it was all real. That took the punch out of it for me at least.
Hey Chris, did you know that "Minority Report" was actually written as a sequel to "Total Recall"? It was supposed to have Arnold and the original cast, but was then rewritten and given to Spielberg.
I'm glad you can appreciate this film in a way. I for one thought it was thoroughly solid, and the extended cut is more coherent btw and better. I find this film to be more a sibling to Minority Report and Blade Runner than the Arnold action vehicle. It has the look of both which I don't find as a flaw at all. It's more fitting of Phillip K. Dick. Yes... I think this is a better Total Recall, the other is more a classic "Ahnold" movie than an adaptation.
I thought it was easier to follow than the first movie but not better. Maybe because I’ve spent a lot of time boggling my mind trying to figure out the first one. The effects were better obviously.
Back in the early youtube days, I use to get my reviews from MrBlack and FuryofTheFilmfan. When they retired, two new hero's emerged, ChrisStuckmann and JeremyJahns.
Hollywood should stop remaking great movies. They should remake terrible movies and make theme good like Dredd.
Hell yeah
Yes. But we all know that won't happen
They did it once - they remade the old, crappy Pink Panther and made to so good that I can't stop laughing each time I think about it.
Not logical. It’s for profit. Why would anyone remake a bad movie and hope to make bank on it.
Well they remade Dredd!!
I'm not the person acting like a 12 year old here. I'm giving my honest thoughts on a film that was purely mindless action, and well directed action at that. Gee , say whats on your mind and be honest😂
Minority report is written by Phillip K Dick as well as Total Recall and Blade Runner. His thing was 'what was reality' so thats why the films are very similar
Finally. This movie wasn't bad. Damn, yeah the two will have their differences. Hell yeah! No shakey cam! Thank you Chris.
The stories that Minority report and total recall were based on were written by the same author
Yes, they are.
gksk8monk and minority report was supposed to be sequel to total recall...
George Also Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly, and The Man In The High Castle
Blade Runner is also based on his novel. I guess the author was famous for these kind of cyberpunk futuristic stories

Never liked Jessica Biel. But Kate Beckinsale is absolutely stunning!! I've NEVER seen a woman wear 40 years old as good as Kate!!
KATE is the best
Jessica Biel sucked really bad in this movie. She stood out like a sore thumb

Why do people always talk about 40 like it’s old. When I think old, I think 65+

Great that you have your own opinions on this Chris. I do not get the critics' hate either. It was not a bad film at all.

One thing that really gets me down is not being able to do a good Arnie impression, FML.
Yeah, I really liked this movie very much, and still remember it
