If you were not alive in the 1970s, you will never understand.
1970 I was only 2 do I make it
@@hankmessaros6700 yup. You know bell bottoms, muscle cars, Saturday morning cartoons, rock, disco. You know.
@@seanmahoney2755 yes, we had so many some things in east Európe too, ofcourse nôt All, IT was little complicated, but IT was Nice éra fór us too.
True that
@@seanmahoney2755 I hated disco. Bob Seger all the way! I sat in the Gran Torino getting stoned while my friends played in the discos.
It is too bad that I am old now, but I am glad I was there during the 70's.
no cell phones recording or snapping pictures... no social media or a lot of the crap today.... those were the days for sure... I wish I could go back so bad... Hearing such songs when they were new and turning up the radio when they came on..
Oh yeah 😊👍 some trippy stuff here
I'm 70 now and still remember and love this song.. and listening to it in 5/2024!!!
Who's watching this in 2024?
Me
WHO LISTENS OR WATCHES AN OUNCE OF THE PURE GARBAGE THAT THEY SEEM TO THINK IS MUSIC TODAY!?!
Who cares ?
Been Watching since 1975 Mate......👍🇬🇧🤓
Not me
KILLER performance and once again The Midnight Special Archives proves their importance in capturing and preserving the musical history of the 1970s. 🎶🎹🎸🎬
Yes it was! Love it!🙌✌️
This and the BBC's Whistle Test archive. Recommended
Completely agree.
Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert was great in the ‘70’s also.
Clapping sucks, performance was awesome
Fashion of the 70s didn't hold up but the music...this is timeless.
That audience didn't realize the greatness they were witnessing.
I think they were actually appreciating it, rather than yahooing away like it was the usual 12 bar blues.
I saw thm in Chelmsford, Essex and thought wow! These are too good to be here and I am lucky.
They sort of looked like stuffed dummies 😂
With all the music running into the 80's. It's all happening again. I love it❤ music 🎶 🎵 😍
I’m coming up n 68, and this transported me back to the day with tears rolling down my cheeks.
Sorry for the kids of the last thirty years.
I believe this is what they call Rock n Roll
I've heard this song probably thousands of times on the radio. This live version is the best! Thank you Midnight Special.
What a crankin tune!
I'm 59 and I can't get enough of this. ELO, Sweet, Styx, Rush, etc., etc., etc., etc....................
54 years old here and I love this song!!
I remember staying up to watch the midnight special... I'll never forget those nights.....
JK, I was born in 1988. I missed out. But yes, the 70's had the best music.
Best 7 1/2 minutes I've spent so far this week!! I love e Manfred Mann's version of this. Even though Springsteen wrote it, I never cared for his version. This performance was 💥! Great start to my day!
Thanks for listening
When I first heard Springsteen's version I thought HIS was the copy & this was the original, lol.
@@genwoolfe Same... Manfred Mann made Bruce look like a schoolboy on his own song...
Who did the radio play?? Springsteen or Manfred Man??
@@foofookachoo1136 Both, but Manfred Mann had the bigger hit, so the radio played it more.
Musicians are Hard to find today
Thank you Midnight Special - and thank you CZcams - for giving us the opportunity to see and hear great artists like this. I was there, alive, and enjoying this music at the time, BUT we never got the chance to see them perform live... this, to me, is the greatest gift of digital technology.
Amen 💯
I loved midnight special!!!!!
In my late 60s now. I saw so many Bands from 1971-76. These guys were the Real Deal. Killer musicians, great songs and multi Vocalist Band. This one of the greatest songs from the 70s. Pretty much a Rock Anthem- not your typical 3 minute song
I love actual musicianship!
My goodness the 70s was an absolutely stacked decade. I was absolutely born in the wrong era. Theres just nothing like this around anymore
Yes!
Yah there is. Listen to music of Slash and Myles Kennedy made in last decade. I promise you'll love it. I'm 64 years old
And that is such a sad thing to be experiencing. 😮💨
born in '66, grew up in the 70's. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
The 70's really was the greatest decade for REAL Rock and Roll, KISS, Boston, Manfred Mann, Eagles, Led Zealand, just to name a few drops in a bucket, the 70's really did have the Greatest music.
One of my favorite songs of all my days. I am 64 years old.... I've listened to a LOT of rock and roll.
You and me both - turning 65 in July.
@@b.wiggins714Turning 67 in July.....I played this to Death in 1975 when it first came out.....👍🇬🇧🤓
Me too!! 🥹I’ll be 65 in October 🙋🏽♀️💕Hey 59ers
I remember listening to this song off of WLS Chicago back in 1977. We received that station in northern Ontario during the night.
For me it was either Capital Radio or Radio Luxemburg as it was too long for the likes of the BBC in the 70s in SE England.
I'm impressed the drummer could sing different lyrics overlap at the end and keep beat
Chris Slade who later drummed for AC/DC
Kids, don't try that at home.
@@brettthebassist and who previously drummed for Tom Jones. What a career!
@@brettthebassistAnd the Firm with Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers.
@@boataxe4605 yes I forgot about that
Probably the best cover ever recorded.
Comes second in my book only to Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower".
@garyhenson117
I can't argue that - Jimi's version of that song is sublime and transcendent.
@@hinjurock70 Dillan himself even conceded that Jimi made Along the Watchtower his own iteration and that it was no longer his own.
Hearts cover of Nilssons WITHOUT YOU
Hmmmm, too many to choose from. The Beatles cover of Twist and Shout, Devo’s cover of Satisfaction, Patti Smith’s cover of Because The Night, The Clash’s cover of I Fought The Law…there are tons. This is damn good fosheezy!!!😊
Thank you so much. I haven't heard this for decades. Great year 1976,i turned 17 and went wild.
I turned 19 that summer. This was the music of my life!❤
Loved this song! I still can remember when this played at the roller rink, it was great fun!
1977 looks like such a cool year!
It was. Trust me. I was there. 😊
It was indeed...in more than a way...👍👍🇸🇻
I was there & it was a spectacular year! Some of the best music of all time was the 1970's peaking in 1977! Who knew it would all be downhill from there with the final push closing out the 80's. We had no cellphones, no cordless phones, no home computers, no internet, no social media, no streaming, no DVDs, blurays, or 4K, no big screen TVs, no HD anything, nearly nobody had "cable TV" most of us having only 3 or 4 channels, & most had no remote controls. Yet...we were 100x happier than anybody today!!
Me to.....The Best Decade....Best music.....Great Motorbikes.....And Good looking Birds......👍🇬🇧🤓
Oh it was
Absolutely legendary so far this song has been my jam for 2024
Bruce wrote the awesome tune. Manfred Mann perfected it. Loved their version.
How great they were!!!! I took couldn't wait for The Midnight Special. Awesome time to live!!!
Great performance and Chris Thompson’s voice is phenomenal ❤
Right..was perfect for this song
The best version of the Earth Band Manfred ever had. Love guitarist Dave Flett's playing. Not to mention the great Chris Slade on drums.
I didn’t know Chris Slade could sing 🤷♂️
Fantastic lead guitar!
@@jeffreyblankley Slade actually co-wrote a few MMEB songs. Never knew or heard why he left in 1979.
@@peterjaworski7048 To say the least! Mind blowing.
Wow - that IS Chris Slade! I wasn’t sure when he had left, and I didn’t recognize him here, so I figured it was someone else. But I just checked the timeline and, sure enough, it’s him. I also had no idea he could sing. And I obviously can’t recognize him with hair. 😅
Man, that was incredible. Better than the recording. I was 18 when that song came out. This takes me right back. That funky keyboard! And I can understand the lyrics here! 😊
Yes - I always thought they were seeing 'like Goliath' when they were singing 'calliope'
He actually seems to be singing "deuce" in this version!
he's not saying "douche" 🤦♀️
V@@benjaminolson7206Reved up like a Duece, Another runner in the night !! 😅
Always had a hard time understanding the lyrics at the start. Wouldn’t believe the versions we came up with😂😂
The 70's. Had a job, no obligations, money in my pocket and not a care in the world, good times !
Dave Flett's guitar solo on this song is brilliant - one of the greatest ever. Very Michael Schenker-esque.
Completely agree
Puts shivers down my backbone! And live too. Lucky they actually showed the person playing it and not some random musician as many directors do.
You're absolute right!
I love how you can see in his face how he's so into the solo. And that part at 4:23 blew me away. He and Chris Slade are amazing musicians!
@@paullelys161 You mean you don't want to see the drummer, the bass player, or some guy in the audience picking his nose while the guitarist plays a solo? 🤔
I heard it then & I'm watching it now 2024.
Be safe Rest well & GB4N.
Classic! They just don't write and make music like this anymore. The 70's had the best rock n roll!
Been AGES since I've heard this song! Even Classic Rock stations don't give it any airplay!
Spectacular. Beyond great. Thanks Midnight.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Proves the fact that a band that can play will play any of their songs as good or better than their recordings.
@PAlex-us4ov most every live presentation is always better than the studio version
I used to watch midnight special and don kirschners rock concert when i was a teenager. I fell in love with every single rock star , every single week! ❤❤❤❤❤
Brings back memories of my youth...love this song
I was 15, and couldn't wait for Friday night to watch the newest The Midnight Special. Our generation was indeed fortunate to be able to watch true artists perform live, with no auto tune. As many have commented, I prefer Manfred Mann's version leaps and bounds over the original. They owned it.
Honestly, autotune is the Anit-Christ...
@@unprofoundpreceded by disco punk and rap
Revved up like a deuce!
TMS never disappoints!
Ripped up like a douche!
That drummer!
Chris Slade. Probably more famous for being in AC/DC
No kidding!?
Also drummed on Tom jones song it’s not unusual
@@deanstanley5799- And also the Firm with Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers. Incredible career.
Another good morning to wake and bake.
(:
Me of course yay loved this group since they came out in the 70's yay favorite song of theirs! Cool Beans!!!
The sound quality here is fantastic!
And it was meant to go out over broadcast TV to a set that had one speaker!
Always one of my favorites... for years now i see. Ohhh many years.
What a great band. No auto tune here.
Love this song! Wrapped up like a deuce, another runner in the night.....
17 that year this song got huge rotation on rock stations that year, for good reason
One of the greatest songs of all time! Blessed to have grown up in that era!
In 1977,When I was 14 years old, this song came on the radio in my rural Far Eastern hometown. I had never heard this song before, with its spacy keyboards and repeated phrases. I heard it once and couldn't get it out of my head. However, at the time, I did not know the group singing the song or the lyrics, but only remembered the repeated phrase "Blinded by the light" and the Japanese title, "Blinded by the light.
Five years later, I was surprised to learn that the song was one of Bruce Springsteen's early songs. I was surprised to learn five years later that the song was one of Bruce Springsteen's earliest songs, because Boss had already captured the hearts of teenagers all over the world, including mine. I was already knocked out by Boss' music. Of course, I also remember the impact of Manfred Manz Earth Band's performance when I was 14 years old.
I AM!!!! ONE OF MY FAVE OLD TUNES👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💋💋
This band played arguably the best of what's now known as 70s classic rock, imho. Killer guitar solo here.
And yet another great band that I would listen to on the radio, but was too young to actually attend a live show. Thank God for The Midnight Special for at least letting us watch them on TV.
That was a very big hit when I was young! I remember it well!
This is fantastic! I remember when it came out. I thought it was Manfred Mann's and had never heard Bruce Springsteen's version. Mann owned it and made it theirs. Great song, great live version!
Another freaking classic.. LISTEN to that Guitarist! 🎸 🎶🎶
Thank you.❤
I think that might be a young Waddy Wachtel.
Brings back memories ❤
The 70s. Ahhhhh….😄
That drummer is badass and his drum set is super cool.
Say hello to Mr. Chris Slade who went on to record and tour with Uriah Heep, Jimmy Page's The Firm and AC/DC.
I remember watching this episode on a tiny portable TV with its crappy speaker. I was 17 and a month away from active duty in the army. I was excited to be getting out of the neighborhood and a little scared because everything was about to change in my life. I thought it was amazing then, but seeing it again now is like stepping into a time machine that makes everything in the past so much clearer and high fidelity. Thank you, Midnight Special!
Thank you for your service. It must be wonderful rediscovering these Midnight Special performances after all these years -- and as you say, in much higher quality than you were able to experience back then. In my case, I never got to see The Midnight Special the first time around (I was about 5 years old when this one aired), and I've been blown away by the amazing pieces of rock history that are posted almost daily on this channel.
I wasn't surprised that Bruce Springsteen wrote this song,it's fanstastic.Thank you for this timeless Classic, T.M.S.!🔥❤️🔥🔥
He may have wrote it but Manfred turned it into a hit by tweeking it other wise it would have been just another album track
Manfred Mann fixed it.

Wow! So cool to see this.I can hear "deuce" and "runner" pronounced correctly.Amazing performance!
I'm just sorry I didn't get to hear this until this evening. Wonderful performance. "But Mama, that's where the fun is!!!" I am still smiling. Love it.
Thanks to the Midnight Special channel for sharing these great performances. There isn't a lot of video of Mannfred Mann's Earth Band.
Once a classic always a classic!
This is always a great show! Manfred Mann's always been an amazing band and they shined live, thanks for the upload TMS!
Words cannot begin to describe how much better those times were compared to today. Thank God for the midnight special and video technology. Let it wash over you and enjoy just a small inkling of what it was like.
👍🇬🇧🤓
Look at that drummer absolutely belt supporting lyrics!
That was just freaking unreal. The best version of this song ever...
I've always loved the recorded version, but this live performance is just on another level. Great rock and roll vocals. Inspired
Wow that was awesome. Especially after a 'smoke'.
The Midnight Special keeps bringing on fantastic music with legends and icons. Ty for the years of the best music ever ❤️ 💓 💗 💕
Bringing me back to when I was a teenager😊
Wonderful Band. First time I ever seen it live. Thank you.
Performance outshines recording...
Oh my god, how far we have fallen musically in the present day.
I wouldnt trade this era of music for anything
One of my all time favs! I love it. Incredibly talented band.
Fantastic !
The perfect antidote to Boulder on the shoulder 😂❤
This was one of my favorite songs when I was less than ten. I was alive for three months in the 60’s and I have so many great memories of songs from the 70’s!
I miss '77. I was 11. Star Wars and Smokey and the Bandit! Disco, bell bottom jeans, and best of all, a sting ray bike!
I remember riding around in my 67 rs camaro with my girlfriend good times good band 💘
The band name in Neon lights is so cool. That's a lot of letters! And the band perfoming live with no background just them nailing all the tunes and lyrics...they don't do this any longer. Thanks Midnight Special!
One of the most brilliant songs ever written and arranged. Everytime I hear it I gotta let it play thru…
"Runner" is another baller tune by these guys.
I keep coming back to this video
One of my favorite classic rock songs!
Just outstanding! Never got to see them live, looks like I sure missed out on a great show!
Living my best La Vida Loca here in southeastern Arizona
I remember calling the radio station to request this song and having a busy signal and then redialing until someone answered and we could make a song request!! Great memories and fantastic song ❤❤❤❤
It's nice to visit a music channel where the music was actually written to please the human ear and not some computer algorithm. Another nice thing about this site is that a lot of the music here still sounds as fresh and relevant now as it did back in the 1970's.
Awesome. Yeah, this was what I grew up on.
This song reminds me of my highschool days riding around listening to KC Kasem!
Flying V FTW! Love seeing this archival footage
Love this
So awesome to see this performance. Thank you!
