The entire Pearl Eclipse drama is problematic.

When I was watching it, I thought Tilan was trying to do anything (including making him drunk & think she’s her sister) to secure her position which means she needs to sleep with him. Like in most Chinese palaces, her rank and her tribe’s benefits should improve after each night together. She was also in a reckless state of mind getting sarcastic with him through actions. Idk that was my understanding🤷‍♀️

Yes, it's very confusing. They could've explained that a little, why she has to be so desperate and all, since not all dramas follow the same harem rules.

Def problematic. The same way Luke and Laura Spencer are problematic. But it was one of (if not THE) greatest romances in American soap opera history.

In the novel part 2 is Tilan's story, which is far more interesting than the way she was written in the drama. The general was actually the love of her life and I found it to be a much better story than Haishi's story. I wish they had adapted that instead of making her the emperor's punching bag and giving her Stockholm syndrome..

That definitely sounds like a better story. The general character has such potential in the beginning of the drama, they could've developed that; but he doesn't show up until the very end to be a rushed plot device.

I don’t like rape and abuse for drama’s sake. And a lot of others feel the same. Not to mention trying to believe that h truly loved her later. He never atoned enough in my book.

Their relationship was without a trace of doubt hella problematic. He's got serious issues that he vented out on her on all worst ways possible - even going so far as making her drink infertility medicine each time they slept together, and I thought Tilan was always submissive that annoyingly grated on my nerves.
However, I really, really like the actress playing Tilan. She was so pretty - even prettier than the female lead in my opinion, lols. So I was happy when her character, Tilan, was finally loved by the emperor.
Also, one of my biggest issues as well was the Emperor's bff, the male lead. Like, did he know how his bestie the Emperor was treating Tilan? No? Yes? If yes, why didn't he advise against it, considering the Emperor treated him like his brother and literal lifeline. He would surely listen to him. That was lame of him, to be fvcking honest.

True, Jianming could have said something that abuse Tilan receives. It's neither good behavior or good politics from the emperor. If he doesn't know, it's one of those things Haishi could've told him since she gets hints about it here and there.
And yes, Tilan can be such a frustrating martyr sometimes with her submissiveness.

It feels very shitty but actually Tilan is supposed to be from Kushan Dynasty of India.
Yes, that whole cheap ass maangteeka (an Indian jewellery) over her forehead and the north Indian mediaeval dress of envoy of her kingdom are actually failed attempt of making it seem that they are from India.
But their outfits are completely historically inaccurate because women and men in ancient India especially in Kushana Period . Here's bit of historical background from where Novoland fiction writers took inspiration -
The first ever confrontation between Kushans and Chinese Han Empire took place in 86 CE. The Kushans, having collaborated militarily with the Chinese against other nomadic tribes during 84-85 CE, requested for the hands of a Han princess in recognition for their support. But the Han Dynasty general, Ban Chao turned down their request. Consequently, a force of 70,000 was dispatched against the General. However, they were forced to retreat after a while as Ban Chao resorted to scorched-earth policy which made their sustenance extremely difficult.

I keep thinking how interesting the story would have been if Emperor Xu wanted to make Haishi his woman instead. She would be the one thing fakeMoYuan! wouldn't want to give up.(on account of him taking punishment for Haishi safely delivering Tilan in the first place, I'd assume under these circumstances thing would be different.)

Definitely hate the couple xD I ship him with Haishi. Everything between these two however...just wrong. Another thing to mention, Tilan did actually have two other options. Haishi would have been able to help her escape from the palace and the Emperor didn't give a damn about her either way so he could/would have most likely declared her either dead or a traitor. The second chance at escape would be with her brother and that friend, general of hers. Basically the same outcome. But whatever was between them was most definitely not love :l
