I honestly find that people sometimes need to be told what's going on because sometimes I read comments and I go, "are we watching the same thing?"

the "teaching him how to smile" became one of their..couple things (?) that was repeated a few times and it added to the emotional impact of one of the main scenes in the last few episodes. so i personally think that was the real purpose of that scene, not to inform the audience about the obvious
It was one of their things, that was very emotional in the end and helped him understand shes still there
It really doesn't bother me that much, to be honest 😅 it's actually a plus in my eyes that the characters just say everything out loud so we won't have all those unnecessary misunderstandings
Yes, agreed with having no misunderstanding is good. We don't have patience for that trope anymore😅
Though, this isn't about making things clear for the characters. It's about the drama trying too hard to get the audience to agree with their characters by stating and re-stating the obvious, which limits our chance to interpret. And that's kinda the fun part of following a work of fiction: interpretation :DD
@@quippequest Agree. I guess there's no Chinese version of "Show them don't tell them" for cdrama writers :D
@@klaraelisabeth They have to make shows that suit their market. Chinese people are watching these shows with 1.5-5 times speed up while doing household chores/eating. Many don't even look at the screen for 80% of the time. Shows are just treated as a sort of background noise to kill whatever boredom there could be.
Show don't tell isn't 100% correct for every situation. I do hate it when some shows repeatedly tell audience very obvious things as if the characters are idiots, but it isn't a problem for this show.
For one time in the drama history the guy actually is quite open about his issue and is willing to talk about it with the girl, and you have to diss it as "lack of nuances". For what good honestly? Idk about you, but I'm rather tired of those tough looking male leads who can't even acknowledge the fact that they have a problem let alone going so far as learning to fix it.
@klara tovhult There is, I think. We just have to dig deeper than before since too many dramas are being put out in a year :D
@@DL-idk I might be wrong, but I think klara tovhult is talking about the execution, not the question of whether male leads should be open with their thoughts.
Also, I don't think the fact that people like to watch shows with 1.5+ speed should be taken into consideration when creating a drama, which is a form of art more or less. If it's a good drama then people will slow down, and the goal should be getting people to watch it at the right speed and pay attention, not accommodating this watching habit?

You’d be surprise to know that many viewers need to be explained very clearly to understand a story. I think that’s why they suddenly add the 2 special extra episode for this one, which only consist of some previous scenes with a narrator, to explain the ending scene cause i’ve read A LOT of comment questioning what the ending means. I don’t know whether some viewers nowadays just lack of imagination or too lazy to think

I agree with you on this about the first scene where Dongfang was given the ball to kick , that was the scene where Orchid reminding him to kick the ball could be omitted . The second scene you mention , i think I kind of agree about it but i don't think it has to e omitted but like it could be. The smile scene though is and important scene, it's one of the gestures which Orchid does like quite a few more times in the drama and it kind of helps in an important connection in one of the future episodes, so like it does have a point.
Ok but for the ball I didn’t mind Orchid saying what we we’re all shouting at the screen, It was funny for me 😂.

Agree and disagree. If this were only a Romance, with a primarily adult audience, agree. However, this is also a Fairy Tale (as in Disney) and was watched by a ton of children, so I don’t mind the redundancy and occasional lack of subtlety. 😊

The target audience, was definitely not us. It just happened so, that the older demographic love it too! xD One look at the parent animation will tell us as much! :P
This was one of my favorite episodes, and I really didn't mind these details. I thought it was a fit for Orchid's character to do those things and her being seemingly invasive made sense to me because she probably didn't want Devy to live in hatred. And the scene where she was telling Jieli about how adorable Devy is, I think the show is conveying how Orchid is starting to open up her heart to Devy. Though in the kicking the ball part, I wonder how the scene would've played out if as you said, Orchid did not say anything.
I think Orchid could've still maintained in character with less words in these scenes. Her eagerness to "heal" Devy and his past relationships undermines the impact of this arc, imo.
All being said, I agree that this is one of the best episodes :D
This flaw didn't really bother me at all. I feel like it is kinda Orchid's personality to state the obvious.
I love Jieli and Shangque though.
P.S. Anyone else hate Changheng? Ughhh....
I don't hate Changheng yet. He still has a lot of time to change my mind, though.
This didn’t bother me much because it’s just Orchid’s personality to say whatever’s on her mind.
When Devy confessed that he didn’t understand human relationship it’s his way of opening up to Orchid. It shows how they are getting closer and it shows his growth.
I also felt Orchid needed to give a little back story to the brother before she gave him that mirror thingy haha
This is interesting. None of this bothered me as much as how many times they repeatedly had DQ and Orchid trade places in the first 3/4 episodes, so we would understand how it works and the trouble it gets them into. That's where I felt the handholding was excessive. And don't even get me started on the wishy-washiness of the brother. 🙄😆😄
That's true, they didn't have to go that far to show us how DF and Orchid "get to know" each other XD
I get the feeling that you don’t like the actress or the character XLH, so everything that she does and says annoys you. I didn’t like her either in the beginning but this episode was actually a turning point for me. I thought it was significant for their relationship when she stood up for him infront of his brother. Showing maturity and her growing confidence.
No, I actually have no problem with the character. It's rather the writing choice of the drama. They could have easily maintained her personality, shown her maturity without being so obvious with the dialogues :)
I don't want to sound mean but I don't think you should just assume people dislike the actress or the character just because they have some criticism about them.
I agree with everything that you've said. Even though I enjoyed this drama thoroughly (it got me through a huge slump), it got to be a bit draggy during some later episodes which I blame on pacing. I find my biggest complaints are the moments where we have to be told things directly (huge pet peeve of mine) and the moments where we were waiting on the characters to catch up to what we as the audience already know. I'm looking forward to your final review because I think you'll expand more on things I have noticed and spoke about in my final review.
Right, it does take them quite some back and forth. The drama is obvious, but on the other hand, it spends a lot of time explaining the obvious.
And yes, I do plan to do a final review on it :D

I totally agree with how eye-rolling it is that they have to tell the audience everything... but unfortunately... I think this movie is catered to people who do need to be told everything. Trust me, I know people who wouldnt get it otherwise.
It's not as annoying as hearing "Sifeng!!" every 2 seconds *cough* ... ;)

If you find yourself choking at all this sappy saccharine overload, I can highly recommend Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty which I think is the real sleeper hit of 2022.

Quippe quest did it again 🤣🤣🤣 ! Honestly orchide was annoying at some point. She was so invasive about all of that "healing him" stuff. Typical cdrama FL
Usually I find your commentary quite perceptive. However, here, I believe you have missed the point that Orchid's persistent out-loud thinking and impatient obvious commands are indicative of her thought processes growing having been exposed to Devil.
There are plenty of ways to show Orchid's thought development without having her speak out loud in every single occasion.
Being quiet in a few scenes would not ruin her growth. But commenting out-loud on everything does ruin what are supposed to be reflective moments for the audience.
And, as I have mentioned a few times below, this writing choice kills the audience's chance to immerse and interpret.

I'm more of a historical big female lead drama lover which I'm sure a lot of people hate too 😂

Her character changes as the drama goes on, so yes, she will be different (more tolerable than the male lead, that's for sure XD)
