Props for Aaron Eckhert for actually burning off half his face for the role. Aaron was just supposed to be a lawyer until he did that and Nolan went with it
This joke is starting to get old now
@@SilverGeFer I still find it funny
@@SilverGeFer it’s been old for a long time now
nolan demanded it.
He also went to law school and practiced it
Hey, Corridor! A big fan... He wasn't talking about the 2010 Gulliver's Travels movie starring Jack Black, but rather the 1996 miniseries starring Ted Danson. Considering Goblet of Fire was filmed in 2004, it would be pretty hard to learn from his experience from a movie half a decade in the future. :)
Right, Webber won an Emmy for his SFX work on Gulliver (1996). The show as a whole won something like 11 Emmys because it was all-around brilliant (covering all 4 of Gulliver's Travels with their increasingly philosophical content - first half is watchable for free on youtube!) whereas Jack Black's film is basic, childish crap (with a good cast).
Oh, I love 1996 Gulliver's Travels! Especially since Mary from Secret Garden turns up in Bromdignag and the way the horses talked. I wonder if the boys would do a react to that.
Goblet of Fire came out at in November 2005.
@@RyanConnell5150 But filmed in 2004...
Tim seemed very friendly and eager to explain but happy to hear y'all's thoughts on these works. Very enjoyable guest, hope to see him again.
Hey, cool to see. I actually lit the hospital bed shots of Harvey Dent, plus a few more of this effect. Of course there was a larger team, think it was about 3/5 of us just doing the lighting? It was actually Ben White who was the (CG? Supe) on this sequence of shots. I remember the REALLY hard work the tracking team did, to get the 3D model to match the real head, and to animate it to match. They even had to take into account the lenses used, as they can visually distort footage, so the footage is de-lensed, the VFX added and then the lense re-applied (as I recall) . All hidden work, but absolutely crucial for this to work, or the model would slip and slide around, which just could not have been allowed in these real close-ups.
An interesting point I remember as well. We had mirror-ball environment for reflections, and the lighting used blurred versions of these, to do the more ambient lighting. These took about 25 minutes to render, before they could be used for actual lighting, and this was a big drag. Harry Bardak, one of the lighting team, suggested we use a video game .exe which did the same thing. And we did, and it took just 1 minute or so. A cool innovation there, brining in some game tech to speed things up.
Oddly, I actually was not enthusiastic about working on this film for some reason, one I really cant recall now. But once I was on it, I realised the work was epic, and it's one of the things I'm really proud of looking back. I really think the whole team nailed these shots, and it should have won an award. But nothing as I recall. A couple of years later I worked on The Golden Compass at Framestore, and that DID win the VFX oscar. That's awards for you, quite fickle and often political.
The Harvey Dent hospital scene is one of the most tense moments in a movie theater I've ever experienced. The whole audience stopped breathing just waiting for the reveal!
The Dark Knight is a masterpiece. I don't think the 3rd movie is bad, it just had a giant to stand up to and it would have been nearly impossible. The Dark Knight was just too perfect
@@d-emprahexpects849 Definitely not a poor choice of words.
That's not what it is about though, it's about what's fair!
@@jakobvanklinken _licks his lips weirdly_
…yeeeaaahhhhh….
@@jakobvanklinken I'm an agent of chaos. And you know the thing about chaos? It's fair.
I never would have clocked that the entire baby was CGI. That's SO good. The light being not very bright and behind the baby also probably made it easier - a lot like the first time the T-Rex was shown in Jurassic Park. Harder to find imperfections in darkness.
Agreed. The hard lighting means that 1. we have a clear indication of how the baby should be lit to make it fit in the scene, and 2. the baby's face is in dark shadow for much of its screen time, removing one of the bigger challenges from the uncanny valley problem.
Absolutely stunning work all around though, even with that consideration that is some phenomenal CG work. Well planned, and well executed. Kudos!
Don't forget wet. Newborns are also not dry and have that wet look to them that CG can often (unintentionally) add at that time. They were definitely working with planned limits to make it look as real as possible.
Not having to worry about photo real eyes seems to have helped too. In any case, I think it shows that the planning really made for how good the end result was.
I love this movie absolutely also I knew at the time this was mind-blowing CGI and would be forever. I remember distinctly telling somebody and they didn't seem to care lol. Hello like-minded peeps!
To this day that is the one scene that left me completely bewildered as to how they pulled it off.
I took my daughter to see Gravity when she was 10. The whole movie was really intense for her. When we left the theater she said “Well one thing’s for sure. When I grow up I’m never going to be an astronaut 👩🏻🚀.”
Best 3D movie experience i've ever had. Only 3D film I thought was worth it in that format tbh.
That’s hilarious 😂
😂 ten’s a good age for a movie like that .
I hope you told her that Gravity is not a realistic representation of what it's like to be an astronaut! This kind of thing is why Chris Hadfield was so upset about how inaccurate it was. People brush off those complaints because "it's all metaphorical", but I'm not sure that matters when the result is that people are coming to incorrect conclusions about _actual_ space travel.
Aaron Eckhert as two face has always been my favorite bit of CG from that series. The first time he turns his head in the hospital bed, was unexpected. I half thought they weren't going to show it and half thought it would be more toned down. The blood on the pillow really sold it for me at the time too.
really? i thought it was too fake and cartoon looking. maybe if his wound was a little less extreme.
IIRC they do something interesting in that scene; the 1st time Dent turns to Gordon, the shot cuts to Gordon's reaction to Dent's face, which we do not see until the 2nd time he turns, a few moments later.
@@CoolGobyFishbro shut up
Slight complaint but around 12:18, Tim starts talking about a technique he developed on a "show called Gulliver's Travels" which appears to be referencing a 1996 British-American miniseries. Footage for that is probably hard to find, but it's jarring that the footage used in the video is from the 2010 Jack Black Gulliver's Travels. While that movie is impressive, it doesn't appear that Mr. Webber worked on it at all and came out five years after Goblet of Fire.
Whoops that’s quite the mistake
I think it would be cool to ask the guests if they were part of any movie that had visual effects they didn't typically like. Kinda compare their best with their worst. They always highlight the best of their films, but it would be interesting to see scenes that didn't turn out like they hoped. Also could compare their first to their most recent, see how they improved overtime. I can see how most would not agree to highlight their worst, but it would be interesting. As I can remember, Seth Rogan talked a little about certain problems and making do with the outcome. I enjoyed that a lot.
I think the issue with this is that 95% of the "not the best effects" type stuff have less to do with the abilities of artists over time and seem to more often be issues of time/money limiting the ability to deliver the best results, so everything framed from that perspective would be "here is a shot we didn't get enough time to complete".
I think that most of the guests don't want to be too negative about any project they worked on. You don't want to burn bridges and all.
Yeah it's a big thing in the industry, don't bad talk anyone, and if you do make sure you have the clout to back it up. The most recent I think is GoT or Dark Phoenix
I doubt anyone would answer that honestly, reputation matters a lot. Maybe reframe it as a movie they've seen where they felt it could have been done better
That Harvey Dent FX is so good! Even zoomed in on the shot it looks incredible. Jaw-dropping.
Ooh, very poor choice of words. HA HA HA
Damn the actors in Gravity had to have so much confidence in the production team because those behind the scenes look so ridiculous. If I was Sandra Bullock id have a hard time not thinking "wtf are we doing?" But she put a great acting performance and the rest of the team did a great job as well
Shame the movie is now most remembered for some of the silly physics errors (most particularly George Clooney's character's death when a simple tug would have saved him).
Do the black hole 1979. Early CGI, great wire stunts, Matt paintings, and practical effects. It’s worth a look
That Matt and his paintings
MAXIMILIAN is still one of the badassest robots of all movie history.
Classic Matt. Such a brilliant painter.
That movie creeped the heck out of me as a kid and I LOVED IT.
How about the Even Horizon? It's got Moprheus and all
A somewhat obscure film I don't think you guys have talked about yet:
1987's Innerspace. Dennis Quaid get's shrunk and pilots a microscopic submarine inside Martin Short. It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for how it realized the sub traveling through blood vessels etc. and some scenes with some LotR-esc shrunken actor camera tricks. Might be a fun one to check out. Love you guys! Keep em coming.
Now that you mention it, I'm surprised they haven't done Innerspace yet!
@@jedironin380 and contrast with Fantastic Voyage (1966), the other great "i am miniaturized and all up in your guts with my submarine" movie.
@@JinKee Good call!
Love that movie! 😂
I watching that so many times growing up. Been years and had all but forgotten about it. Certainly worth a look on this channel :)
Any of the scenes in MOON with Sam Rockwell and Sam Rockwell !! They're so well done and the cutouts and clever tricks they do make it still hold up!
That guest is really cool, love his way of presenting things. Seems humble and kind
A nice, small detail on Two-Face: When Two-Face is in the bar and he drinks the shot, if you look and listen carefully, you can see some of it drip out of his throat's burnt half and hear the drops hit the bar counter.
Wow
I always loved that detail, further showing just how much of a pain it is to have half a face beyond the obvious... half a face.
Also found out that when Two-Face rubs his chin, the skin comes off.
Tim Webber is absolutely insane. The attention to detail is insane...
Even the smallest of details is faithfully recreated, moreover, every detail is so well considered, it's mind blowing. Just look at the light reflecting off the individual teeth for one thing.
It's almost magic what has been done here.
Two-Face seemed incredibly realistic to me when I first saw the effect back in 2008, it's so good
Children of Men still holds up so well. Great acting and an incredible story.
The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning!
And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight
The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome
for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that.
Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there.
The azula agni Kai fight is a masterpiece of art. The art, the score, the choreography, the emotion. All perfect.
These are really good suggestions. I'm surprised that they haven't done Avatar: The Last Airbender (2D trailer)

No matter how many videos I watch from this series I am always left baffled with what these artists can produce. It’s amazing and I really appreciate the work they put in. It’s insane.
Cool that Ryan George and Corridor collaborated for the Ad Read Seaction.

It's amazing how this show can highlight the best in visual effects and cover movies made 15, 25, 50 and even over 100 years ago. Credit to the Corridor Crew for being skilled enough to notice and explain the techniques and humble enough to highlight that artists had to work with greater limitations to pull off a great shot that would be no issue today.
I have an unprecedented amount of respect for the movie 'Gravity'. When I first watched it, I never thought it would be this much CGI as most of if looks real.
Yeah shame about the writing and acting
@@legitbeans9078 I dont have complaints for them either. N
I'd love to see Captain D back. He's awesome and I like your energy together. That episode aas actually how I discovered his channel and I have binged it countless times now, which is easy when videos come out like every 6 months ;)
I actually own the robot arm that was used as the sun in Gravity. At least I was told it was. Still trying to confirm, not that it matters. Or maybe the control software just came from Bot and Dolly. I have two Bot and Dolly's original robots, Rosie and Puck. It's possible this acquisition was a mistake, but I'm excited to get them twitching soon.
If you get it to work you should post some videos on CZcams. (:
@@Shufflingisahabit I will, but also I spent a decade building a platform to stream holographic content that is just about to launch and I got the robots because of that thing. If you want, give me a follow. Stuff should be dropping by the end of the summer.
@@3089io nice I'll be sure to check it out in a bit. (:
Kane Pixels would be a great person to have. He’s the one that has done many of the popular backrooms videos. As a young VFX artist he brings so many cool ideas to the table, and his projects are so cool!
I'd watch that
This show manages to consistently be S tier for both entertainment AND informativeness. Perhaps one of the best CZcams series formulas ever devised- and executed so successfully. Props to everyone involved with this series.
16:56 "Hi..." best line delivery in the Dark Knight trilogy
Another superb guest. I love this series so much.
Just saw the trailer for "I'm a Virgo" (Amazon Original Series), looks like some neat forced perspective/jumbo-sized people special effects that might be worth checking out/analyzing!
Watching gravity with a friend was a blast as we tried to imagine how they pulled a lot of it off.
I love guessing at techniques and figuring what’s real and what’s not.
I love Corridor for making these.
The Dark Knight was just such masterpiece in all departments. Amazing cast with some magical acting performances, immaculate VFX, gripping tension, an excellent soundtrack, ...
My all time favourite film. Never get tired of watching it and I see new themes and connections every dang time 😅
I never miss an episode of VFX Artists React. Never.
12:19 I think he means the 1996 Gulliver's Travels, would've been nice to see some clips of that.
You just get drawn in to the enthusiasm of people showing off and being proud of their hard work.
Tim Webber is an absolute joy to listen to. Love his clear and calm way of explaining things. Great episode.
After watching for 4 years, I decided to named my son after wren. You guys are great at what you do, and I love the enthusiasm!
Congrats on a new adventure! 🐣
This is insane to me. Wow, thank you I'm honored!
You guys have inspired me to start learning VFX. Even at a beginner level, it has massively changed the type of short film I can make. I thank you for your informative and inspirational videos over the last few years.
i love that scene from goblet of fire because its the only one i remember watching in the movie theater, and i remember it specifically because i was little and kept looking between the screen and projector booth as i realized how the movie was working.
"The Losers" when the helicopter picks up the armored truck.... Almost halfway through but not quite
I remember downloading that dancing baby and after the week it took to download we watched it a lot lol. Its amazing how far we have come.
Alfonso is a brilliant filmmaker, can't wait for his upcoming TV series
The Flite short film is giving me MAJOR Mirror's Edge vibes mixed with some Sunset Overdrive.
I like it. 👌
Tim's great-and the effects in four of my favorite movies are HIS work? Amazing.
I saw Gravity 4 times in the theaters. I've seen probably less than 5 movies more than once in the theaters. Just an unbelievable experience.
damn only saw it 3 times lol
Same, I saw it 5 times and if it were re-released again today I would go and see it several more times. Yes, its VFX are stunning and had a big impact on filming (it was the genesis of the Volume for example) but I also found Sandra Bullock's emotional journey really compelling. Alfonso Cuaron is one of the best directors around today.
one of the best imax 3D experiences ever. I had to hold onto my seat because it felt so real. magnificent film.
It is very underrated somehow, and I don't think most people realize how hard it is to get something to look like it's actually shot up there. I was blown away by how real it felt.
why?
Thank you for making my saturdays great! I like watching them while coding or playing with my baby :)
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Tim worked on Irradiated. One of my favorite SCP shorts ever.
Wren: "This looks accurately murky, you know the fall of of light feels like what it would actually be like under water"
Scuba Divers: Aaaah..... No.
Murky water means particle filled water. particle field water means less clarity and the fall off starts immediately. Those particles cause a lot of light scatter and diffusing and everything kind of "Averages out" light wise.
Being underwater is like being inside a lens with a lot of impurities.
Its almost like filming someone inside a smoke filled room, but you are only showing smoke behind the characters. But instead of combustion products its dead animals and mud.
I’m surprised Christopher Nolan didn’t scar Aaron Eckart himself, given how much he hates CGI.
I don't think he hates it, he just prefers to do things practically
I think it's more of a preference than it is hate.
I want to suggest Victor Perez to be invited on the couch. He is an amazing visual effect supervisor and a great CG compositor
that meme baby was just amazing also people added differennt music to it back in dial up connection age and share it!
Seeing Gravity in IMAX + 3D was one of my favourite movie experiences ever.
this was a very chill video, loved the guest. absolute master of his craft.
It would be fantastic if you brought Ben Burtt on to talk about sound design not only in Star Wars, but films in general
I'm glad Gravity is getting its due- I loved it and I still think it has the best CGI of any non-Avatar film. It was the genesis of the Voulme as well.
I would love to see a VFX Artists Roundtable hosted by you guys.
We already get such cool insights from these guests and I'd love to get full conversations with them
Already loved Sandra Bullock's performance in Gravity. Having known what it took to film it makes me respect her acting props a ton more.
I really love the artists you bring in that are just a bit more serious about their craft. Of course I love the guests who have me slapping my knee, but I really feel like I learn something with these ones.🎞🖥Thanks Guys!
Should try doing an episode with Neill Blomkamp, getting him on to talk about District 9 and his Halo short films would be great
As always, great episode, but, you might need to add, to the requests, one to the guest itself, «which director/colleague would you like to see here unfolded too... Any secrets that they might have had». And as always, yeah, great episode!
You can't tell what's real inside of a person's memory. That is genius storytelling done through VFX.
My favorite part of the week
This guest was brilliant. I love the way he explains stuff.
It would be really cool to have Dennis Muren come on to the show, to take a look back at some of his older VFX work.
Has Corridor Crew done an episode yet with a miniatures fx artist? New Deal Studios for instance has done extremely strong miniature work (and also involved in the Dark Knight trilogy).
I love that in the Harry Potter lake scene, it all takes place underwater which means the rest of the school has gathered to just watch an empty lake for an hour.
The Last Starfighter - One of the earliest full CGI space battles.
Yo, this guy is a legend... Harry Potter, Children of Men, Avatar, Gravity,...... AND the Dark knight??? Yeah. wow
The Dark Knight will always be the benchmark for the quality of modern superhero movies. What a monumental achievement.
yes, no dc and especially marvel still not close. Like terminator 2
Great video as always. I was wondering if you guys would take a look at the 1990 Warren Beatty movie "Dick Tracy". Some of the exterior shots are amazing.
that scene from harry potter always looks amazing to me, never breaks the illusion until the sharkhead
Gotta love seeing that Ryan George reference with the ad-stronaut bit
It’d be dope to get the director of Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow if you can make it happen! 🤞
Happy to see you are reacting to the baby of Children Of Man, I love this movie!
I remember my mom thought the actress really gave birth, it is so realistic
VFX Artist Guest: Ami Yamato!
I think she'd be a fun guest to have!
Absolutely massive respect to you guys for giving VFX artists such an exclusive platform to properly showcase their artistry🙌
Most of these people are legends who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring us some of the most memorable moments in our lives for decades and yet never been fully acknowledged............and you guys put them center stage, or center-couch in this case.
You can literally see the joy in their eyes explaining their incredible work. They deserve all the praise❤

@@nightspicer I might be off a couple hundreds of days.
i love when guests come on, even with large portfolio's of work, they are just as excited to explain how they did something as corridor crew is to discuss it.
Bro Niko is pro, He has such keen eyes to capture what's there
It would be cool to have a female VFX artist on the show! We need more role models :)
Why does a role model need a specific sex in a job where your sex is irrelevant?
Recommendation- The CGI hair in Little Mermaid is really impressive! I couldn't stop looking at it in her under water scenes.
you sure? some parts along with flounder and sabastian look......creepy....and uncanny
I like how this guest becomes progressively more exited the more they talk; Signs of both a good host and an artist who loves about their work.
I have been in the delivery room 2 times. That newborn is really accurate.
THe more I know about the production of Gravity, the more I think it should had been in the best animated feature category for the Oscars.
The main idea I take from all of these videos is attention to lighting = great VFX
wooow they made the volume for Gravity before there was a volume... truly ahead of its time

aw my god, two face looked so good. i was so gutted they didnt bring him back as the main bad guy for the third movie or a future one.
''but thats cuz he died''
did he though? they held a ceremony for Harvey Dent yes, but maybe they coulda made it symbolic like ''yes harvey as we knew him is dead'' and harvey as two face is locked up in arkham. and he breaks out, as they do, and wreaks havoc, maybe even joining with another of the rogues gallery, it woulda been so cool and was a helluva missed opportunity to have him actually be two face for a whole film.
Great interview. Amazing work, and this shines SUCH a great spotlight on the actors here.
the de-aging of John Goodman in Righteous Gemstones is definitely worth looking at
I look forward to Saturdays. This channel is one of the reasons why. Thank you to the entire team.
