- Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of all time! So you can imagine how hyped I was to play Helldivers 2 for the first time and see all the inspiration it took from this film. Anyways, here is why I love it! Also this video was meant to come out a month ago but it was delayed because of copyright issues.

@@axeenj Sure. For one, the asteroid defense system. The movie's intro is chronologically later in the movie, post Buenos Aires meteor ; The news reel says "The bugs send another meteor our way, but this time we're ready". This shows that they are now able to defend against the meteors after refitting the planetary defense system.
ActMan uses the existence of the newly upgraded defense system as a reason why the bug meteor would have never reached earth and it was a false flag operation made to make mankind mobilize against the bugs in force; which then reinforces his argument that the Terran economy is based on war, when in reality of the movie that's not the case at all.
Having Clancy Brown aka The Kurgan and Mr.Krabs as the Drill Sergeant is a definite plus of this film. "Now, who has what it takes to knock me down?"
I loved how in The Shawshank redemption, it had Sgt Zim from Starship Troopers as one of the guards, and had Drake from Aliens as the rapist. It was funny seeing a Colonial Marine getting beaten nearly to death by a Mobile Infantryman, I didn't expect a prison movie to answer the question of which movie's space marines were tougher.
Put your hand on the wall next to you.....
@@Secret_Takodachi Or you're fired
That "The mobile infantry made me the man I am today" scene is something I think about often.
I love that scene, because in the book, Rico actually see's the man off duty pull his prosthetic legs out from under the desk, and asks why he wasn't wearing them.
The recruiter's response was "I don't want anyone to be under the illusion that this is a safe or easy job."
This make more sense when you realise the book Federation is in fact very open about the fact that you're basically becoming a state slave for the duration of your service, and you can leave at any time if you want.
But as Napoelean said, "A soldier will fight long and hard for a piece of colored ribbon."
Which all makes a lot more sense, considering that Starship Troopers was written based off of and so soon after World War 2, when all those crippled war vets came home if lucky, and many others didn't at all.
I like to think they only replaced his arm because that’s all he needs for a desk job
@@timedraven117Yeah tbh people really miss the point of the original book by calling it fascist. The Federation is anything but

@@quintus920phew. It's a good thing you pointed this out.
Pretty simplistic view (makes sense coming from a goof ball like zapp), it's more like, "I'll do what it takes to make sure my people survive and thrive, while working with friendly communities and neutralizing/weakening foreign threats."
I love how the "Its afraid!" Always gets misinterpreted like theyre barbarians, in reality theyre in the brink of defeat and just knowing that theyre enemy is also afraid gives them hope for victory.
Also, read the book my man, like it or not, its so worth it.
Definitely, the book is pretty good, I absolutely enjoyed it.
I actually loved how it protrayed the military with patriotism and comradely that it almost made me want to join the military till I remembered I have health problems and that the military sucks
The movie does a really good job of tricking you into thinking that the humans have turned the the tide of the war with this capture, when in reality they just barely got a "win" here. It's a false flag to keep pushing for more people to join the war effort.
I think the second movie does a real good job of not sugarcoating what the Federation wants; it doesn't want to destroy the bugs, but to control them and turn them into weapons.
@@andrewowens4421mmmm. U lost me HARD even u brought up a sequel lol. Now I don’t trust anything you say
You definitely are supposed to think of the humans as brainwashed barbarians. The director has explicitly said so. He was motivated to satirize fascism due to his experiences growing up in the Netherlands under Nazi occupation. The whole point of the movie is that blind militarism and fascist dogma turns people into barbaric morons who will die for literally nothing.

"Violence is the supreme authority, from which all other authority is derived." This statement is undeniably true. It isn't saying that "Violence is the only answer to any problem," it's saying that behind every law, edict, or position of authority is the barrel of a gun to enforce it. Without violence to back up, any form of "authority" is hollow.
OMG!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU LITERALLY USED BASIC LOGIC TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS STATED!!!!!!! SIDE NOTE - AUTHORITY, LITERALLY DOES NOT EXIST WITHOUT VIOLENCE!!!!!!! IF YOU CANNOT ENFORCE YOUR WILL, (BY VIOLENCE, IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM), THEN YOU LITERALLY HAVE ZERO AUTHORITY!!!!!!!!!!
EXAMPLE - WHO THE HELL WOULD PAY TAXES IF NO ONE WAS GOING TO ARREST THEM?????????? WHAT IS THAT YOU SAY????????? POLICE ARREST TAX EVADERS?????? GUESS WHAT..... POLICE ARRESTING SOMEONE IS USING FORCE/VIOLENCE TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVE!!!!!!!!! POLICE / MILITARY / GOVERNMENT MONOPOLIZE VIOLENCE, AND THEREBY """"SELF-DECLARE"""", THEMSELVES TO BE THE ONLY LEGITIMATE USERS OF FORCE / VIOLENCE, WITH WHICH THEY USE TO ENACT THEIR WILL / AUTHORITY!!!!!!!! :D :D
No where is this more demonstrated in the UN. They literally can't do anything to China or North Korea because they have Nukes.
Even West Philippine Sea conflict with China on some Islands that China is claiming even though said Islands are closer to the Philippines than China showed this with China just Brazenly Ignoring the Sea Tribunal Rulings.
Literally force is needed to enforce anything.
I think even Anime teaches this with Battle Shonen. You want to change something in your society you don't like? Well get stronger because it's the only way you can get the power to change anything.
Yeah man most peoples brains can’t see that the only reason society doesn’t rip itself to shreds is because there’s a bigger gun behind the curtain.
Yup, it's why I unironically agree with the starship troopers Federation. It is a dream society I hope we get to.

One interesting aspect from the original book (I own a copy of the novel and have read the entire thing) is that Federation service wasn't strictly a military service like the movie makes it. In the book, a term of service could be spent doing ANYTHING the Federation gives to you, even counting the hairs on caterpillars. Also interesting is that in the book, Johnny Rico's real name is JUAN Rico, a play on the term "Johnny Rich Boy". Also, he is Filipino and he even speaks Tagalog as his native tongue, although this detail is only revealed later in the novel when he reunites with his father. For its time, the Starship Troopers Novel was quite progressive.
Paul Verhoeven is an absolute genius. His films have that certain brutalist depressing quality to them but manages to make every singe scene captivating and enjoyable. Not to mention all the one liners 😂
Not really a genius in this one. He had no respect for the source material sooooo, I'll take the book over the movie with no second thought

They filmed starship troopers in my hometown when I was a little kid. All of the battle scenes were filmed in a dried out lakebed called Hell's Half-Acre, in Wyoming. A lot of the people around town too were cast as extras and theres so many stories about all the drills and training they had to go through to realistically make the movie. Some people still have body armor and guns too. They realistically made 1000 sets of body armor and uniforms, and then I cant remember how many they made but the Morita Assault Rifle was actually designed as a real rifle. Obviously it fired blanks not bullets, but its why a lot of the effects look so good. Its not CGI laser guns they are shooting, it pushes the line as close as possible to a real war movie.
Also different movie, but one of the big actors from Paul Verehoeven's Movies named Michael Champion (Old guy with White Hair and Aviators from Total Recall, he was chasing Arnold as Michael Ironside's partner). Mike spent the rest of his life in my home town. My friends and I signed up for a boxing class like 10 years ago, and we were watching Total Recall before class one night when I realized Mike was the guy from the movie. I ran to class that night like OMG YOU WERE IN TOTAL RECALL! Mike just goes OMG I KNOW. I short circuited, I wasnt prepared to be right about any of this as I grew up in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. XD
Everyone around Paul Verehoeven though has so many stories though, and holy crap are they all so badass.
Those setd of armour would be used in Power rangers in space
That's actually a really cool story.
fascinating, i thought they stopped using blanks for filming movies at some point
@@JNJNRobin1337 i dont know how you would be afraid to shoot a real one, if you only have blanks that should be fine and people could work in half cover for the barrell to shatter any real bullet

The fact that the whole video has SC soundtrack made it even better! Amazing job
I always assumed the large distance the meteor travels is a plot hole. This is the first time I hear someone bringing this up and if you connect it with a capable orbital defense system already in place....
Yeah, I think that is what Paul Verhoeven was going for. Good point!
Except that....the Bugs have a BRAIN bug, which can absorb any info from the brain it injests. Theoretically it could have absorbed enough info to know:
1. Where earth is
2. How its orbital defense system works
3. If there is a blindspot anywhere on the planet.
Hell, the Bugs even ambushed a station, used the brain bug to call in for human reinforces, and then hid to ambush them again when they arrived, and the humans fell right into it. Because of the Brain bug, they are as smart as us. It isn't a plothole.
Ok, the movie messes up the timeline in the movie to confuse the viewing and to suggest that it was the humans at fault because Verhoeven thought the Federation were fascists and so wanted to portray them as such when in fact if you carefully watch the movie, you'll realise that it was the bugs that were the aggressors... This is the correct timeline of events in Starships Troopers as told by the movie,
Mormons settled on a bug planet despite being told not to as it was a bug planet and they all got slaughtered for it, but the Federation didn't start the war because of that, no, the bugs saw that settlement as an invasion and so they retaliated with a bug meteor and then that's when the Federation go to war with the bugs and then at the end of the movie they show the new orbital defense ring to protect from these meteor attacks in the future.
To understand the story more, you need to understand the books and Heinlein who wrote the books as he was a WWII US vet and he hated communism... The bugs in the movie are communistic, they think and act as a group and they dont understand individualism, so when the Mormons tried to settle on their planet they believed it was an act from all of humanity and not a splinter group. In this story, the Humans did no wrong.
@@crackajacka87 that's what l just said, but my comment got removed. The Fed has never lied to the ppl. They don't have to. They admit that humans are outnumbered greatly when compared to the Bugs. When they get slaughtered, they admit how many soldiers perished, and show they disfigured bodies on live tv. Heck, they even have wounded vets with missing limbs right there to greet new recruits, so why would the Fed all of a sudden lie about how the war started? Actman was off base here.

Ummmm, but they literally are insects.
And they exhibit none of the signs that they would feel any remorse about killing a human, so I’m not sure why you’d think they would.
They are bugs, and the response to them was proportional and morally justified. The news reels about the bugs are shown out of chronological order from both the original script, and the only logical reason I could think as to why would be to obfuscate that the bugs responded to trespassing with attempted genocide.
Fun Fact on the book the movie is based off of. The only thing that could prevent a person from signing up for Federal Employment ( Which is what the cast did) is TWO psychologists had to sign off that YOU could not understand the "Oath of Service", and if you did NO MATTER YOUR PYHSCIAL CONDITION, the Gov is bound to find you a position to work for them.
Not to mention the military did everything in its power to DISCOURAGE people from enlisting because they only wanted people absolutely committed to the defense of society. The context behind the disabled veterans manning the recruitment centers was deliberate because they wanted to scare away glory hounds and people who just wanted to join the military to fast track their citizenship rather than take up civic duties.
If I remember correctly, it was a right of person to serve and become a veteran one day, so they almost couldn't refuse, but they did do everything possible to discourage you from joining (compared to the movie, where people are encouraged to serve). Also, most of the book is about Rico studying, getting promoted, going back to officer school and such, while the movie... eh.

@@TheRogueCommandit’s very obvious when you take a second to realize that the antagonists are “a bug race that must be exterminated”. Hopefully, the historic parallel isn’t lost on people.
@Xenomnipotent I hadn't considered that before, but you're right, it's VERY obvious in retrospect. An enemy that is somehow too incompetent to defend itself, but also an unimaginable danger to society as we know it.
so many old farts in the 90s completely had shit for brains. how could the kids totally understand the satire but not the parents : p
Got my cup of liber-tea ready for this Act-man review! I'm doing my part!
Your analysis perfectly explains events of the last seven months.
Wow. Such a thoughtful insight on the movie. You understood it very well. Made me want to review it.
It was very deep and well explained.
You got a new sub
You say Dean Norris yet you show Michael Ironside, gonna have to have a treason officer look into this offense.
LOL
“Dean Norris Is In This Movie Too” that guy was Michael Ironside lol Dean Norris was the head of the Military Training Academy
this whole video is a big act man W. thank ya bro
I honestly don't understand how the satire could have possibly gone over anyone's head, but alas, it definitely did. It was in grade 7 when Starship Troopers came out, and even I understood that it was satire when I saw it in the theatre with my father.
Capital punishment is still allowed in the military today, generally only in specific circumstances like murder. Also, while injection is the perferred method, nothing says they cant use hang or firing squad.
Yup. It’s still on the books.

Feels like a loaded ActMan week! Thanks for the content 👍
Damn, dude. This is one of your best videos to date. Keep it up! 🤟
What I had gotten from the beginning lesson scene wasn't that "violence solves everything" but rather "everything eventually leads to violence." And to be real, I agree. Force equals violence. You cannot force someone to do anything without the threat of physical harm or detainment. It would be nice if we lived in a world where we could all just discuss and debate all our problems away, but we still live under the basic understanding of violence being a natural consequence even now. Try not paying your taxes and see how peaceful the IRS is.
And then someone tries to combat the IRS with guns, and then it escalates.
In their society they also believe that pretty much everything including arguing is a type of violence. The teacher says that voting is exercising political force through your vote. Probably aceing a test or getting better grades than others is viewed as dominating your classmates. From a point of view they're not wrong
Through this comment I FORCE my thoughts and views on YOUR MIND, this is an unapologetic act of aggression and you will like it, soldier
@@raulpetrascu2696you missed the point. The point of Mr Raczak was that voting is exercising political authority onto your opponents via electing people who will make certain laws that your opponents are opposed to
@@juan_hates_cucarachas1364 ik but how did I miss the point?
@@raulpetrascu2696 I exaggerated a bit but you generalized a little too much
If i recall correctly, in the books you absolutely can get serve in non-military was. Book's point here wasnt VIOLENCE but rather one's ability to serve society
Citizenship was attained through civil service, but military service was the fastest way
@@trevorreichard6735that isn’t supported by the text, that’s a retcon by Heinlein
It’s still a good point and it’s the reality of even modern human society, especially democracy
which is fascism not in the woke understanding of the term but the original use that we should all work to benefit the collective as we are stronger together. its shocking how similar it is to communism its really the methods employed that differ and both fail for the same reason corruption at the top
The hell is that first sentence
That shower scene has lived rent free in my head since the move came out. 😂
I appreciate all the helldivers music you used throughout the video.
"Dean Norris is in this movie too" Shows Sam Fisher. Made me do a spit take haha
So close to greatness, but my brain glitched
Sam Fisher or Michael Ironside?

The music when they went to the blue bug planet was so epic. You could feel the emotion
One of the best tracks ever! Sometimes, you just need to acknowledge and feed your inner megalomaniac :D
Those scenes with Christmas music... Mwuah, chefs kiss, just perfect
Starship Troopers is going to continue growing in fame for generations to come.
Watched this with a friend at a sleepover and now "mobile infantry made me the man I am today
So glad we got The Act Man reviewing a relevant movie 26 years later. But honestly the movie was great satire and not at the same time and oh the amount of memes this movie has spawned over the decades, just *chefs kiss*
What is the satire about?
@juan_hates_cucarachas1364 the creator of the movie said it was satire of fascism. Which he failed miserably at considering there is voting and strong emphasis on the individual.
The Federation isnt fascist, if anything its a libertarian paradise. @makkdaddy5310

Paul Verhoeven is a leaving legend.DONT forget the music score which is so epic , and so good.
I was 11 when it first came out and it blew my mind. Watched it again as an adult and it still holds up!
Fun Fact: Did you for the troopers outfits they were Also used for the tv series Firefly Power Rangers Time force planet of the apes 2001 imposter 2001 and power rangers lost galaxy
Casper van dien even commented in a interview about the uniforms in firefly, but in practice they reused it because it was cheaper, but deep down in the world of head cannon they are all connected
No way, that's a lotta mileage on those suits!
And G-Saviour.
I think you got the pr fact wrong. It was lost galaxy i believe.
Commander Shepard believes. When he gets pissed off he shoots things. Find him more bugs.
It's awesome because its Paul Voerhoven. He was a master of making something look stupid but its actually genius. So he could make sales right off the bat, like Robocop. But the deepness keeps the movies enjoyable rewatch after rewatch.
Always loved Starship troopers. Its truly a 90s classic
I have read Liu Cixin's Dark Forest... I completely, with no joking or anything, justify the invasion of the bug world.
In fact, that world should probably have been completely destroyed already by this point of the story.
Just nuke it from orbit
7:00 - just noticing the starcaraft music. PERFECT editing
"Dean Norris is in this!" (shows Michael Ironside) I lol'd. Oddly fitting for this movie tho because now we can be told that Michael Ironside was always Dean Norris.
Loved the Halo music throughout btw!
Topless Dizzy kickstarted my puberty. I was obsessed with her for months.
Funny thing is that as a kid when I saw the movie for the first time, I didn't feel aroused at all by Dizzy. I'm not sure if it was because I was too young to feel that way, or because I was more embarrassed by the idea of co ed showers than I was turned on by it. Probably both.
When I was in the army in Sweden we would shower together both males and women. Just saying. They did change it later
Plot twist the real reason why we attacked the bug planet was because we found oil
I love how you play it out. It’s like high school musical with killer bugs. Aliens is the best military movie you can make and they make something completely different.
I got to deal blackjack to Michael Ironside for three days. He's one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
that's awesome
Thank you! Love the channel, love the content and love you Act Man!!

Haven't seen this since I was a kid, so the added insight was really cool!
I love how helldivers 2 is so good it has act man changing from a gaming channel to a movie channel just to review the inspiration for it.
