I find it ironic that Fincher's only movie to win the Best Visual Effects Oscar (Benjamin Button) is the one where the effects are most obviously being used.
probably the only one that the oscar people watch ;)
It's not really. Best visual effects incorporates, design, realisation and implementation, so shots that are being discussed in this video, whilst obviously useful, are not bold enough or interesting enough to warrant an oscar. SO many films use lots of tiny VFX that people wouldn't realise that these aren't particularly special
A true master's best work is so good you don't even notice it.
Wow! Is like Oscar people is not scientific nor systematic in the way they rate these movies, man!
Who would have thought?
'-__-
that's cause for Oscars
Best =Most
Had no idea about the CGI blood; I have always been of the opinion that CGI blood is always terrible and can't ever look right. Fincher proved me wrong without me even knowing it. Nice.
CGI blood is used a lot. Game of thrones uses it. You only notice bad cgi.
92axelmaster true that's the problem of visual effects no one will notice when you do it well but everyone will notice when you did it poorly
yeah, the cgi blood here is really amazing. it still doesn't look like practical blood, but it's probably not trying to either.
You know the CG is good when you don't even notice it
"If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all..."
As a compositor this is 90% of our jobs. fixing things no one will ever notice or would think should happen. I mean sometimes we create dust storms on Mars, but usually we're removing boom mics, adding time appropriate flags and advertisements or blood splatter. Grinds my gears when people complain about CG cause they don't notice 98% of what we do.
Exactly. Grinds my gears as well. Not a VFX artist, but have worked with them and am friends with a couple of them. Have always admired the work they do. So, yeah... I feel you.
Yeah, I sort of have mixed feelings exactly because of that. The types of techniques mentioned in this video, like set extensions and tracking or replacing faces, building entire cities or comping parts of cities to make it time-period accurate, blood splatters and props, etc. are not unique to David Fincher at all.
I'm not saying that it's not impressive but it sort of felt like a waste to focus this on David Fincher when this is prevalent in most movies nowadays. Kaptain tried to tie it in with Fincher specifically, but it's hard for me to grasp it when this is all very common (90% as you said). It certainly shows his commitment to the exact shots that he wants to justify certain VFX shots (i.e. gummy bear), but it's not uncommon and also why directors rely more and more on previs now. Maybe this is just because I also work in CG (feature animation but still)? I did find this as a great video to generally explain the amount of unseen or subtle work roto artists, compers, lighters, etc. do, but not anything specifically David Fincher related. So I'm glad that it seems so many people are learning about this. Just sounds like Fincher's had a great CG supervisor on all his films. I'd have loved to learn more about how his background at ILM helped inform his decisions.
But again, I did think this was a great video explaining the work of these overlooked (and underappreciated) artists. And I love that we've been getting more frequent vids from kaptain!
Animation|Complex I always get a little annoyed when I hear about how undervalued VFX artists are. Hollywood is one of those few places a union is accepted in America, so form one and/or push for greater recognition. If that won't work because a sweaty Indian man can do your job for 4 bucks a pop maybe you should move to another field.
That's a strong reaction to one sentence that's not even part of the main conversation being had. Not to mention that that comment itself is very reductive on a number of levels. But if you aren't unwilling to accept the complexity of the global VFX industry's labor problems there's not much left to this conversation.
This is an uninformed statement. Other areas of the entertainment industry aren't faced with foreign subsidies, fixed bid contracts, and powerful resistance against organizing.
Love how this guy didn't just decide to make a video saying how good Fincher is but actually made the effort to pick a topic hardly ever covered about Fincher...
I would encourage you to check out the Fincher video on the channel "Every Frame a Painting."
I'm not here to compare the two videos; both are great. I just think that if you enjoy this one, I think you'll enjoy that one too.
(Also, that channel is fucking great. Not a lot of videos - and I think it's been at least a year since the newest - but even the categories I don't care about - like one on Buster Keaton - are fascinating.)
And another fantastic channel that has a very good Fincher video is "Lessons from the Screenplay".
True Detective vs Se7en - Creating Light Amongst the Dark
czcams.com/video/uKSDctC2o-s/video.html
Although obviously that one isn't about Fincher generally so much as one of his movies specifically. It's very much about the story and not the creator, but I think it's very well done.
(It's not contrasting the two, like the title may imply, so much as talking about how they both do things in a really interesting way. It's appreciating both, not talking about how one is better, which I like.)
Knowing this, changes my perspective of the use of CGI in films, really.
Well you know, I for one don't mind even if CGI is obvious, as long as it looks good. Same with older types of effects (mate paintings, models, etc): I don't mind the fact that they are obvious if their aesthetics works and the movie as a whole stay coherent in it's look. It's why I can enjoy fully green screened films like speed racer and to a certain degree sky captain and the world of tomorrow (despite some shots that doesn't look as good as the others), or older films with obvious fake sets like batman returns (for example): they all clearly look like effects, but their visual style still works.
Agreed. I love my popcorn summer films to blow me away with CGI, but not the films I get emotionally invested in. Or so I thought. I saw a video recently showing the CGI in Mindhunter, a show I’m obsessed with. I could not believe how much CGI was necessary to pull off the late 70’s and early 80’s. It truly blew me away. It wasn’t noticeable, but it allowed me to stay emotionally invested in the story. Makes perfect sense now. I’ve heard actors, most recently Jonathan Groff, talk about Fincher’s genius. I understand now even more why.
Your videos are such an inspiration. Can't think of anyone who edits as flawlessly as you do.
Weird that I could say the same to you now.

Ayyy Karsten, follow you on Letterboxd and love your videos
Well maybe Fincher
Man, seeing Gone Girl really gave me hope of seeing a Fincher directed Batman film after Ben chose to step down.. I'd watch a 2-3 hour mystery/crime thriller with the World's Greatest Detective directed by Fincher any fucking day of the week.
That said, Matt Reeves is a phenomenal choice as well.
Alex Love Imagine a movie directed by Fincher, starring Affleck with Victor Zsasz as the primary antagonist.
Michael Andrews With Victor Zsasz being played by the guy who played Rorschach in Watchmen.
Matt Reeves is pretty mediocre tbh
Flowey, I've always thought Jackie Earl Haley would be a fantastic Scarecrow
I KNOW!! Ever since i've heard that Ben was not going to direct The Batman, my whole thought were: "I mean, David Fincher already worked with Affleck in Gone Girl... he can direct The Batman!". Can you just imagine how fucking awesome would be a Batman movie with a crime/neo noir style ala Se7en or Zodiac combined with the gritty violence of... let say, Fight Club? Yeah, sounds too good to be truth, but one can dream.
I'm really hoping that WB Don't mess up with Reeves work, he is a far more competent director that any of those who already worked in the DCEU
My favourite video of yours so far. You're killing it dude!
This one was next level incredible.
Goal Guys agreed. this was top notch.
The X-Men one was uncanny.
Tho video essays about Fincher have been done to death up until this point, it was pretty nice to see that you took it in a completely different way
The fact that he cares more about immersion than he does showing off shows why he’s better than most art house filmmakers
I absolutetly cannot wait for Fincher's Netflix series Mindhunter. I just know it's gonna be so good
It is
@@hunterwhaley5221 Season 2s out. Beautiful.
It was SO. GOOD.
Yes. Its wonderful. Hope your enjoying it.
My favorite director of all time. We haven't had a director as consistent and utterly devoted to craft since Kubrick, honestly.
Excellent work as always! I was so stoked when I saw this in my sub feed!
Couldn’t agree more. David Fincher is not only a filmmaker! He’s a visionary and he gets feelings and goosebumps in there too!
Fincher a master craftier of 3D models on a computer
KaptainKristian a master video editor with a the chocolate velvety voice that always have something interesting to say
omahasamman Well, he's a director not a CG artist.
Kristian you're the reason CZcams exists. You'r a regular guy who has a things he's passionate about with an amazing talent in visual essays. You're editing, thumbnails, narration, and presentation are so incredibly well put together. Behind all of that, you're just a normal guy who, as you put it, "creates visual love letters."
I always knew Fincher used CG for certain camera moves, but I never realized it was to this level. New even greater respect for him after this video, and more to you as well for the excellent editing!
David Fincher - The GOD of Cinema....I'm from India & He is my inspiration Alwz...
"Everything seems really simple on paper until you take a camera out of the box" said by David Fincher
Hatsoff to my Demi God...No one can replace Him...
I just watched Zodiac last night for the umpteenth time. What the hell?! The timing is too uncanny, Kaptain's material too perfect. Covering one of my favorite directors? This is a dream!
Man fuck that movie everytime I see it I fall into deep research mode. Even thinking about that movie can get me into that mindset. It's the best movie to obsess over
Champion Bescos I think it's funny how only a few climax points make Zodiac such a great movie
I think the movie has such a great use of Exposition-Payoff
Champion Bescos the best movie made by arguably the best director righr now.
Amazing video. Fincher is a mastermind.
This actually made me curious on how he'll use CGI in World War Z 2.
Eric Gatubu (haven't seen first so I'm speculating) and he's worked with Brad pitt multiple times.
Well obviously the first had zombies and you know that requires a ton of CGI, so I bet that'll keep him creatively busy.
I don't know about you but i'll take a Fincher sequal of a not so impressive first installment than no movie at all.
Ered1995j I recently read a profile on Brad Pitt, I think it was by GQ and Brad said Fincher and him are really good friends after separating from Angelina he didn't want to be alone so he stayed over at David's house for a couple weeks. It's one of the best actor-director partnerships I know I'm super excited for World War Z 2
this rumor is more than a year ago
This was excellent! I say this every time, but you have out done yourself! Congratulations!
Fincher is just giving all his friends work, and I appreciate that.
I'm a simple man. When I see things on CZcams with professional production and extensive research, I subscribe!
The biggest star here is the author of this video. It takes masterful storytelling to break-down and make evident Fincher's mastery of storytelling. Double-thumbs up to kaptainkristian
He's been one of my favorite directors for some time now but this video made me develop a whole new level of appreciation for his movies. Fantastic stuff.
Just noticed how many popular blogs are sharing this video, with credit too. so proud of you for how far you've come man, love what you do, keep it up.
The social network deserves its own video.
These are getting better and better. I hope Fincher sees this and appreciates that someone like yourself is paying attention to his work so closely. I have a new respect for Fincher, whom I never even cared much about, and it's your passion for his techniques that makes me excited about his work.
A nice youtube channel.
His editing skills are simply stellar!
@@electricsunrise2948 They are! I hope you have been enjoying life.
Gone Girl is such an underrated movie! Truly, a stylistic masterpiece.
I love Fincher's work. He's been my favorite director for awhile. I knew he had used a lot of effects on TGWDT because they show the work being done in the special features of the blu-ray. I didn't know he did that with his other movies too. Great stuff!
Dude you managed to grip my attention for the whole video without looking at any comment and without me even realizing it. That's an impressive feat for sure
My God, do I love this channel. I remember when there was only like five videos on here and I'd just watch them on loop.
This is so good, I never knew he used CG for those films. Damn you really do learn something new everyday
kk's videos are the only ones I watch even through the advertisement, because I don't want it to end.
Rocket jump did a great video on the use of vfx in movies that I highly recommend.
MF Whom ?, What's it called?
I respect the profile pic
+japzone Why CG Sucks (Except It Doesn't)
The sad takeaway is that you know a VFX artist did an *absolutely exceptional* job when you don't notice it at all.
Fincher's Invisible Details, indeed.
Fincher is a prodigy
Jack Bell Is whomst?
He certainly is.
He's a UK music band?
@Alexander Supertramp NO
Best director ever.
I can't think of anyone as dope as this dude. Damn. I think I've watched all of them at least 5 times
What a unique way of looking at the director David Fincher. Especially on the CZcams film essay space where you can find dozens of videos about David Fincher.
I look forward to every video you put out. Well done
*Nice little end to the second week of this shite exam season.*
this is so painfully true
Same bru
ᏔίᏃ_ you can do it, don't give up
Just One more week left.

DUDE I NEED ANOTHER KAPTAIN KRISTIAN VIDEO!! I'M FEENING
I don't know any director that pays as close attention to detail and perfection for every scene like Fincher does. Amazing, his movies are truly works of art.
I've seen all your videos this morning starting with this one ... please continue, you are a master!
Damn I knew David Fincher was great but wow, this just lets me see that he’s actually on a whole other level 😱
David fincher is my favorite director and I didn't even know he used that much cgi wow thanks for a gud vid fam
Fincher is my favorite director of all time...glad you put this together kristian.
Nerdwriter puts out a video to collect a paycheck. You put one out to make a statement in the most beautifully edited/animated way possible.
We need you back, my guy!
new exurb1a and KaptainKristian videos on the same day? Is it my birthday?
I see a youre a man of culture as well.
How are these opinion pieces again?
Well said.
Yes, that's how teaching and learning works.
I learn new thing every time you post a video. Much Love and Respect
I'd like to thank YOU for putting so much effort and detail in each video. This is an outstanding channel.
If David Fincher and David Lynch did the fussion dance would he be called David Lyncher?
No
@@shanegreen4076 it was a good joke
It was an Hilarious Joke
You're the best.
Jack! Happy to see you here
Your content is phenomenal! Your editing impeccable, and I learned so much! Thank you.
I love this channel and it's videos. There is so much knowledge on the subject and so much work done to show things that we all missed. Every time I watch one of these I get lost in the subject matter, and am left wanting more. These videos seem like they will be long, but it seems like in an instant they are over and done. Truly great content.
Are you done for a while with CZcams? Haven't seen a vid from you in 2 months. Miss the best channel on CZcams!
You should do the symmetry of Wes Anderson
Thank you for this video. Please make many more such.
This was brilliant and about my favorite director so naturally, I was a fan. I had written a blog article a long while back but never touched on the hidden visual effects that he does so well - thanks for that new insight into his work!
I was wondering, have you by any chance read any of Junji Ito's work? There's a lot to talk about there and I feel like it would make a great episode!
~p.s. great video
SuperEyePatch Wolf have a video on terror in general, but in that video he talks a lot about Junji Ito. I think the video is called "How Media Scares Us" ^^.
Where you at oh kaptain my Kristian
I come back to your videos every once in a while, and I always learn something new. You're a God amongst men here on CZcams!
another great video, you truly do not disappoint , the production of your videos are amazing.
David Fincher: The Cinema Magician

WOW. What a video, man. You always have a unique perspective, but this was next-level. Great area to focus on, and phenomenal video as always.

I love your videos man don't ever leave me youtube.
the BEST video essays on CZcams! kaptainkristian you're the man
Another masterful video Kaptain! Keep it up.
Where is his new content? Is he done making videos???
Most perfect director to make a batman film
Damn right!
Diego M-A really hope so but just imagine se7en but with batman and Gordon and a lot more action
Jhon Actually Fincher turned down directing Batman before Nolan, He didn’t want to ruined the story and the character of Batman
I love all your videos, even those that tackle a subject I'd never care about normally. the quality is just so incredibly good that it makes me interested in the subject if I'm not already.
Great video man. Knew about a lot of the CG but even some of this I had no idea. Well put over and executed. Thanks.
My favorite director. (Alien 3 never happened)
If Fincher himself could wipe Alien 3 off the face of the earth, he would haha he hates that movie more than anyone.
no that was Alan Smithy not david fincher
David FIncher did direct that movie but there's a bunch of reasons for the moveis quality.
you should check out Chris Stuckmans page on it, he did an indepth talk with someone. it goes for like 40minutes but really you can just skip ahead to when his guest starts talking and listen to him for like less then 10 minutes and you'll understand.
Just me who loves Alien 3, then :p
If Fincher had his way, the film would of probably be good.
Ok dude make a Twin Peaks video already
This is a very well-crafted video that covers a topic a doubt everyone has thought about in an extensive fashion, which is exactly why I enjoy your videos so much. They are always an eye opening experience made interesting, regardless of if I know or even have interest in the subject matter. Keep up the good work!
I love that just because Kaptainkristian and Nerdwriter1 put up a video less than a day apart it invites all these comparisons. I LOVE YOU BOTH!! lol
Dude where are you??? We(me) miss you. If you could do a nickelodeon video or even Cartoon Network would be the shit.
2 months without new videos...
Andre Leite where have you gone sweet prince
The Social Network is one of my favorite movies, not for the subject matter but for the cinematography. And the soundtrack.
This is literally the best youtube channel. Actually, your videos are far above the standards of youtube.
You deserve a team, a show on Netflix/Hulu...
Last time I came so early, she sighed and left.
Last time I saw this fucking joke, I prayed it was the last time I saw it. Repetition, repetition, I wanna give a job to a mortician.
FinDan Yeah, I feel you. Will try to do a better joke next time.
ZTorres hilarious and original
Great job
+ZTorres I'll give credit where credit is due, though. Most people would have screwed up the joke by starting with "Last time I was this early". Seriously, you wouldn't believe how often it gets told wrong.
I'm Very Angry It's Not Butter!! And I'll give credit to such an awesome username.
David Fincher is one of those directors I really have to get into. Does anyone have a Fincher recommendation?
Afonso Lucas Gone girl is also amazing
Afonso Lucas se7en
All
the social network
Start with Fight Club and Se7en
And if you like them climb on to Zodiac (I think his most subjective film besides Alien 3),Gone Girl ,The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Think about The Game ( in my eyes a little bit overrated)
I for myself still haven't seen Benjamin Button and Panic Room
Love this video. I watch it every couple months.
Great piece! And thanks for putting the commercial at the end.
TIS BEEN TOO LONG
"his unconventionally structured narratives and unique characters" that's the screenwriter's accomplishment. not the directors. give credit where credit is due
Most consistent, most impressive, most incredible channel I have ever come by. You are an inspiration, keep it up. Love your shit Kristian.
Of all the videos analyzing Fincher that I've seen, this is one of the best. All the other videos always use the same facts (his camera movements and color palettes) and you did a really good job talking about his use of CGI.
