  • Fake engine noises and fake exhaust tips are on many modern cars. Today I will show you how fake noises are added to a car, what the system ACTUALLY sounds like, and how to disable the Soundaktor on MK7.5 Golf R. This will apply to other VWs as well. Turning the Soundaktor down, or off will give you an idea of what the car actually sounds like. We also output test the Soundaktor because it sounds cool. #humblemechanic #howto #DIY

    I've been thinking about adding my own version of this to my Mk4 12V Wagon. I drove around with the hatch propped open (large boxes in back) and the sound was incredible, but I got noxious fumes in the cabin too. I thought about putting a microphone near the tailpipe under the car, and wiring it into an auxiliary jack for the stereo. So, it wouldn't be "fake" sounds, just more of the real stuff in the cabin on a volume knob.

    I like the fake sound in my '18 R, but occasionally I get severe rattling in race mode from the center dash area. By pressing the rear view mirror cowling, the rattling is suppressed - does this indicate the vibrations from the soundaktor are causing loose wires inside the cowlings to vibrate? Is this something the dealer can & should rectify under the warranty.

  • @alanday5209
    @alanday5209 Před 5 lety +10

    I don't use the soundaktor, personally, but I don't think people really understand what it's for. It's designed to give the driver more feedback, allowing you to hear where you are in the revs (rather than keep looking at a rev counter) , the vibrations also add to the feel. It's not necessarily "fake", just amplified.
    They should've made an option to turn it off fully in the drive modes, instead of just eco.

    • @alanday5209

      @@sqike001ton that would affect everyone though, not everyone wants more noise. The manufacturers have to build the vehicle to suit most end users, not just gear heads. Also, as I stated, it's not only about the noise. The vibrations also give feedback, similar to the way harder bushings and motor mounts do.
      Luckily we have a solid after market.

  • @ryanthomastew
    @ryanthomastew Před 5 lety +5

    I think a better description for this is "Amplified Engine Noise". The reason I say that is because the sound isn't fake - it's the actual engine sound but the system amplifies it via structural vibrations.
    Fake would be pumping in V8 sound or VR6 sound that doesn't originate from the 2.0T.

    Great tip. I never understood why this was added. Designing a quality exhaust system with a great sound should be part of any performance car design. I guess soon none of this will matter when we go electric. We will be adding this to cars to remember the way the classics sounded. Imagine using VAGCOM to add the classic sound of a 2002 R32 to your 2030 e Golf GTI.

    Unplugged that on my Mark6 as soon as I got it. If you have the dsg mark6 you can remove the cover by the pedals where the clutch pedal would’ve been in a manual and get all the turbo noises directly into the cabin. That worked much better than the soundaktor. Maybe the newer gens have a removable cover down there as well check it out
