I purchased my R September 2019 and after watching this video I purchased the spare tire kit from Dap. Last week I hit nasty pothole on my way to work, and having spare tire saved me. The only thing was living in Boston and being winter l l used 17 inch wheels with snow tires, having an 18 inch spare in the front was a little funky. It was for a day and I drove no more than 8 miles. I can’t thank you enough.Keep up with the videos I’m enjoying my R !
My humble '19 Jetta S 6mt didn't come from the factory with one either. I told the dealer I wouldn't drive it off the lot without one. They added one with the complete tool assembly for "free" :)
After my first pothole that destroyed a Conti tire and bent a Cadiz wheel, followed by a 2-3 hour wait/tow/Uber trip home from a bad part of town, I bought my spare, jack, and wrench from ShopDap a few years back. The trim wasn't readily available and I didn't see the value in the foam block. Thus, I cut my own trim and just wrapped the tools in bubble wrap to minimize bouncing around in the underfloor space. I've had to use the spare twice since then. Once out and about, and once just from my driveway. Either way, definitely worth it! Now that I'm trading/selling the MK7R, I'm planning to pass the kit onto another owner.

As far as I can tell, it's mostly for weight savings. Also, Australia has always been strongly in support of retaining a spare tyre (and a full-sized spare where possible) because of the long distances and harsh road conditions between towns once you're left the city behind and struck out for the outback. Space-savers are virtually useless under those conditions...and the inflation kit is generally even worse than useless. auto.howstuffworks.com/why-many-new-cars-dont-come-with-spare-tire.htm
Charles, thanks for this (and everything else you do for the community). The part about "walking" the seal out from under the rear trim piece is critical, and I could have easily not even noticed that the seal was underneath the trim and left it be. Because of your clear instructions, I did it the right way. Super-happy to be rolling with a spare now as I'm out in the sticks and travel in some lousy cell coverage areas. Rock on!
I have a 2016 Golf R (Canada). I ordered all these parts except the replacement trim piece. It came in handy a year later when I picked up two screws in one tire. I was able to get home from work without trouble. I even stopped at the local Canadian Tire on the way home and they patched my tire and put it back on the car. Bring a tire bag with you so you can toss the bad tire inside to keep your trunk clean. This is one of the best 'mods' I've done to the car. Cost ne 728$ Canadian with tax, duty and shipping for the entire setup. Expensive, but in Canada, everything cost more. Theres no real need to trim the plastic for the tire to fit. You just have to finangle it just right.
Instead of having to make all their cars with 5 wheels and tires they remove the spare and charge the same. Multiply that by millions of cars and BOOM your profit margins are up instantly.

This video is smart as all get out. I just helped a coworker with her factory goo kit and she didn't make it a mile. Had to call AAA. Now she's looking into this very solution.
Late thanks for this. Just when I thought I had this figured out I noticed the subwoofer cable was short. Thanks to your clear instructions I noticed you had pulled the cable fully "before" adding the new trim piece. Saver for me as that cable was really tight before I saw your video.
Incredible, so for the European markets, this car includes a spare tire, but not for the US? Does this same technique also work for a 2024 Golf R? Either way, this was a very clear and professional video. Thank you.
By not offering a spare tire option VW USA is simply trying to spin the Golf R as an "exotic". A Lambo or Ferrari doesn't have one, so the Golf R shouldn't either. Silly marketing. You did a good thing Charles - the $300 cost is simply worth it for the piece of mind it'll bring. Cheers!
Just did this mod earlier today... holy sh!t was the original molded plastic part a bear to get out! Finally did though, and now I've got the peace of mind that I've got a spare tire and tools. Thanks Charles!
One of the things I hated most about my mkvii R was no spare. I used to vet flats every couple of months. Really shitty roads in the snow belt. Finally gave up on crappy roads after 3 years and traded in for a truck. Still have a sports car for summertime fun, but glad to have a truck for the daily.
In Europe (AUT) it is as follows, the spare tire is a optional extra. If you are willing to cough up the extra coin you will get it. The reasons why you dont have it as standard are as follows: Trunkspace (for the magazines it is "very important" to compare them), weight ( fuel efficient), costs, and saftey. Most of the costumers are not able to change a wheel anyway, so instead of the option to change the wheel you get more trunkspace.
If you want to make a place for that little metal rod thingie, you can stick it in the oven for a little bit and plop it down where you want it to sit, it'll melt itself a nice little indent.
Thank You Charles., and thank you for reminding me to check the air in all our Spare tires. Also, I keep forgetting to investigate further those little Valve Stem extendo' Thing'rs. It's like a short hose extension. Some of them (as I see yours is now) the rim and tire are mounted upside down which means dismounting things just to check the pressure. Which means for some, it goes unchecked because "it's a hassle".... :\

In all the time I had my R I don't recall even checking for a spare. Now I have a GTI which of course has the room but a spare tire well would definitely get in the way of the AWD
Hi, As of 2013 all cars sold in Europe are sold without spare tire to safe weight and so to safe fuel cost. When we went back to Europe a couple years ago, we found it out when I rented a Golf, i was told the above as of 2013 no spare tires in new cars, VW, Vovo etc etc.All newer cars are equipped with the tire inflating kit including the slime to repair the tire. Lucky our 2017 USA Tiguans have a spare tire.
Sehr gute Idee. Das was VW ab Werk mit den Taschen anbietet ist ein großer Mist . So ist das viel besser gelöst. Ein großes Dankeschön. Gruß aus Deutschland.
You have a spare as an option, it's about plus 100€ here in Germany. It's not a standard, because it conflicts with some options you may want. Like, the Dynaudio sound system or the variable loading floor. Additionally, many cars come on run-flat tires. Hence, you don`t really need one. At least here in Europe.
MY 2017 CC has a full size extra wheel and tire! i was shocked, in the day where companies are removing them, it still has a full size spare matching rim and tire!
The fix a flat system sucks so bad!!! Ended up spraying it all over myself. I previously bent a rim (brutal winter) and already had a full size spare at home. Got a tow home and the tow truck driver swamp tires for me... sense I don’t have a jack. Long story short full size spare at home! Lol
Got a huge puncture on my mk5 last night, not the best experience swapping wheels at 3 am but at least hit home an hour later with no issues so far, hope you don't need it but it's there, you never know. I'm planning to purchase a little fire extinguisher, just in case!
My 2018 GTI has a spare tire, but the trunk trim piece doesn't have the circular cutout! I didn't even know the trim could be like that. It was such a pain to get the spare in and out because of this. Thanks VW 😤
If I'm not mistaken this car comes with a spare here in Europe. I guess VW figured that most US buyers don't know how to change out a tire so they simply left it out.
Focus RS'es don't come with one either. Very difficult to find a spare that will clear the front brakes, or in a 5x108 bolt pattern (I think the only route is a discontinued Jaguar space saver?)
Hey Charles, thanks for this video, finally got around to adding a spare. I know the community really appreciate what you, shopdap, and everyone else does for this community. After watching this a few years apart, what do you keep in the OEMTOOLS hard case? And, do you have a link for that hard shell zip case? It fits perfectly.
I agree, I’m not part of any community of car enthusiasts, but I bought one of these recently, and really enjoyed this video. Very clear instructions and insight.
As a serial VW audi owner it drives me nuts, I currently have an 2015 RS5 it comes with the stupid fix a flat kit, I got an S5 donut off of ebay to at least have a spare (it will only fit the rear because huge front brakes) but it gives me options if I get a flat...
GCC Spec cars ( Middle East) regardless if its a Golf R or a Golf GTI comes with the spare tire. I believe this has to do with the specifications ordered by each region and not by VW Germany. Most probably that VW USA is requesting these cars to come without the spare tire kit.
You know what's funny? We have the same bathroom scale. You know what else is funny, I used it to weigh my new wheel/tire combo to compare it to stock.
I was blown away when I popped the trunk in my wife’s ‘19 Jetta and it had no spare. I did remedy that of course, even though I’d be likely the one changing it, no her. But my bet is it’s for weight savings and/or cost savings for why it was left out.
what i find funny is my MY18 GTI came with a spare and all the accessories. i dont have the fender sub in the trunk but that allows me to actually lower the floor of the rear cargo area by about 6 inches. where your foam is towards the front of the car, mine is at the rear behind the bumper. those slots where your foam slide in is where the load floor slide in for the lower position. VW is so odd sometimes with how they do things
I just ordered the Mk8 Golf R DSG in Lapiz Blue with a sunroof (an option in Canada) to replace my Mk7 R. The dealer says they tested transferring this mod to the Mk8 and it fits. They also say my winter alloys and tires will fit too. So, good news for me all around!
@@HumbleMechanic Thank you for another great video. I read that the spare in this kit doesn't fit over the brake caliper in the MK8 R. I'm assuming that's incorrect? Thank you so much!
All you really need is the spare tire, a jack, and some sort of lug wrench. I bought that foam piece but it was on back order for several weeks, however I found I could just open the jack between the spare and the inner wall and it is rock solid, then some velcro or a bag for the lug wrench and you really don't need the foam piece. In fact when it finally showed up I used it and actually wish I hadn't because it really did not buy me anything useful and takes up a lot of space that I had been using for other things. So if I had to do it over I would not buy the foam piece, it is just an unnecessary expense that only takes up useful space.
Maybe. I really like having it all nice, secure and organized. Especially for out cheap that part is. But the beauty is, we can do what works best for us!
My experience with vw with wrong tire sizes with cause the traction control and accelerator issues. On my car it would cause the accelerator to hang up when trying to slow up while driving at highway speeds
1:10 - This is rough to see the kit was $300 just 3 years ago, but is $493 at the time of this comment. That inflation really hitting hard on spare tire bois.
A really common reason why modern cars don't come with a spare is to make room for the subwoofer as part of the upgraded audio system. If I'm not mistaken, you can see it at 3:37.
My 2017 GTI in USA came with a donut but not sure full size spare like my mk5. The factory spare tire hold down will in fact fit a full size 16" spare off a mk5. I just cut that rear plastic panel with a Dremel to fit the larger tire. Much more peace of mind knowing I have a full size spare vs a donut. Bmw hasn't offerend Jacks or tools since 2006 because they all come with run flat tires except the M cars which offer a air compressor and tire slime kit.
One of the reasons why I love my B7 Audi .. ..Nice job Charles .. I still can't believe the US government allows cars to be sold without spare tires .. SMDH.
It was most likely for weight reduction in my opinion. And probably for a better front/rear weight distribution. Thats why Mazda didnt put a spare in the nd miata.
Well to be fair, you can simply check a box and it will come with one. Costs you about 100 Euros in Germany if you wanne get at real spare tire (18 inch). The set comes as standart.
I think another reason that manufacturers stopped adding spare tyres is because people are unable or unwilling to change their tyre themselves. People are lazy and rather call the tow truck instead. I added one to my Audi A3, those spare kits are useless.

I'd definitely go with a new panel. I wouldn't want my brand new car having a hacked up panel.
Focus RS'es don't come with one either. Very difficult to find a spare that will clear the front brakes, or in a 5x108 bolt pattern (I think the only route is a discontinued Jaguar space saver?)
I bought a spare tire for my R last month from DAP and see you got that Ling Long tire as well. Hope we never need to use it!
Thank you so much!!!
Lol bro gives Aaron Kaufman vibes 🤣🤣🤣🤣
GCC Spec cars ( Middle East) regardless if its a Golf R or a Golf GTI comes with the spare tire. I believe this has to do with the specifications ordered by each region and not by VW Germany. Most probably that VW USA is requesting these cars to come without the spare tire kit.
You know what's funny? We have the same bathroom scale. You know what else is funny, I used it to weigh my new wheel/tire combo to compare it to stock.
Hahah yep
Digging that new time lapse intro!
I was blown away when I popped the trunk in my wife’s ‘19 Jetta and it had no spare. I did remedy that of course, even though I’d be likely the one changing it, no her. But my bet is it’s for weight savings and/or cost savings for why it was left out.
Yep. It’s crazy!
Anybody else remember the televised commercials touting the full-sized spare in the MkIV? Pepperidge Farm remembers...
Hi. Great vid. You mentioned your wheel spacers. Can I ask what thickness (mm or inches) they are? And did they improve handling? Many thanks!
what i find funny is my MY18 GTI came with a spare and all the accessories. i dont have the fender sub in the trunk but that allows me to actually lower the floor of the rear cargo area by about 6 inches. where your foam is towards the front of the car, mine is at the rear behind the bumper. those slots where your foam slide in is where the load floor slide in for the lower position.
That’s awesome. I’ll be testing and working with SHOPDAP on a kit for everyone. If it’s at all different
@@HumbleMechanic Oh i get it, it is kind of an OCD thing, which is very common for VW folks. I am too, just to a somewhat lesser extent.
2019 e-Golf also has no spare tire but the same exact flat tire kit.
I want to order for my 2018 Golf R 7.5….too bad it takes 2 months to get here!
My experience with vw with wrong tire sizes with cause the traction control and accelerator issues.
On my car it would cause the accelerator to hang up when trying to slow up while driving at highway speeds
I’d rather that than being stuck
I really need this kit for my mk8
Everything but the rear trim fits
@@HumbleMechanic good to know thanks
@@thebiggestoneyouveverhad Did you find a solution for the rear trim? Did you just leave it out? Thank you.

Hahah
1:10 - This is rough to see the kit was $300 just 3 years ago, but is $493 at the time of this comment. That inflation really hitting hard on spare tire bois.
A really common reason why modern cars don't come with a spare is to make room for the subwoofer as part of the upgraded audio system. If I'm not mistaken, you can see it at 3:37.
Yeah. But this woofer fits inside the spare. Lol
SMDH.
I've had my car for 21 years, it has a compact spare. I have never used it even once. Lucky
Rob T me too since 2001. Never used it.
Excellent video. It's purely cost cutting from VW.
How cool is that? Now all I gotta do is get a Golf R.
Thanks! Just installed the kit!!!
I got a 2018 1.8t and i got a nice spare tire😉
Hahaha nice
What's the wheel bolt hanger?
Anyone.. please
I've heard you should always fit space saver spare tyres to the rear so it wouldn't affect the brakes
It’s going to impact brakes no mater where you put it.
For me this is an ultra temporary thing, meant only to be on while getting a tire repair.
Hi! Love the stuff you make, it’s very helpful! What’s the part name of that griddy anti scratch you have on the rear bumper? Thanks!
$45,000 and no spare!? Glad my Mk6R came with one!

Great Video! Thank you so much. Question: Where did you get the rear bumper sill protector? Would that fit on a 2017 Golf R model? Thank you!
I sold my 19" Cadiz, bought 5 aftermarket RPF1s on DWS06 and do a 5 wheel rotation every 3-5K. I hate that nasty fix-a-flat stuff.
My MKV R32 came with a small spare tire and the jack. Not sure if you were referring to the MK4.
ShopDAP FTW
I purchased this kit. Have you tried that pump that came with the car? Mine consistently blows the 20amp fuse. Thanks for the great videos!
I haven’t used it. :(
This is the only mod I’ll do with my Golf R
It was most likely for weight reduction in my opinion. And probably for a better front/rear weight distribution. Thats why Mazda didnt put a spare in the nd miata.
I really liked this video.
Mine has the space saver and tools! Wonder if it’s just in America?
