I Messed Up Bad

- We had a day full of snow recoveries. A van up on the mountain in the morning. Then we grabbed a suburban a friend gave me for parts. Then we had a car that had slid off the road on Long Canyon, so we fueled up and headed out after them. Soon after leaving the gas station, the truck started running rough and smoking. We pulled over and began checking fluids and everything to see what had happened. After checking everything and finding nothing wrong I looked in the fuel tank and realized I had filled up the truck with diesel. We had to call Mike to bring out fresh fuel and buckets to drain the tank. Once we got that problem addressed, we continued on to get the stranded vehicle. Winched them back on the road and to the top of the hill. They went on their way and we headed home. Yes, I made a mistake and I own it completely. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Someone who owns their own mistakes! How refreshing to see personal responsibility. Love this channel.
Well said!
Yeah definitely, nowadays everyone wants to point the finger but those same people forget that admitting to mistakes only makes you a better, more knowledgeable person who will be respected more by the people who surround you.
@@dakotawright6978 Not my mistake (made plenty too in a former life) . Was once the manager of a tiny gas-station. It belonged to a guy who owned two Stations. One day the supply-truck, came to fill up the underground tanks. It was a slow day as always, the road had been diverted and this gas-station only got 20% if at all of the former traffic. So while I was inside, the guy did his job, then he came in, cussing his head off. He dumped about 2000 liters of fuel in the wrong tank. The truck was equipped with a holding-tank for mistakes like that, but the hose to pump out the wrong fuel was not on the truck. So we decided to "pump out" 2000 Liters of fuel through the car-filling hose, of course the money-counter running. 2 weeks later I almost lost my job because according to the records I sold 2000 Liter of fuel, but kept the money. The wife of my boss was also the bookkeeper for the business and she got in touch with the driver of the company who fueled the wrong tank. If he had denied that it happened who knows what grief that could have caused me...
Agreed, standard response these days is to claim anything you don’t like or want to hide as “False News” and carry on regardless.
I have always admitted my screw-ups. It is the easiest way to handle it. I mean, what are they going to do fire me? If they did fire me, I was looking for a job when I found this one. Never did get fired though. LOL One time I screwed up something, and I told the boss what I had done. He asked me if I knew what I did wrong, and I said yes. He then said, "well, don't ever do that again." I don't even remember what I did wrong, I just remembered what he said though.
The person that never messes up, never does anything.
The look on your face when Sean asked you if you put diesel in it... priceless. Thanks for another video guys!
Yea, that was an "aw crap" moment. Sort of like going 45 minutes to the lumber yard to buy one 10' 2x12, taking it 45 minutes home, then cutting the wrong line making the board too short. Yep! Been there, done that.
Cell phones are a true distraction...fueling, driving, etc. I'm sure someone has done the math on how they increase the odds of impact on a task at hand while using one.
I thought the diesel nozzle was larger so that you couldn't do that? Although I totally understand the automatic pilot things where you're in the middle of a thing and you get distracted right at the critical moment and make a mistake that you normally wouldn't make because you don't make those kinds of mistake.
@@RowanHawkins I think that most of Rory's fuel tanks are after market, or cannibalized from other rigs To be honest, I don't remember the size difference. I will look the next time I fill up my Diesel pickup.
@@RowanHawkins 'Unleaded fuel necks' were not incorporated into heavy pickups (3/4Ton & 1Ton) until the late '70s...a number of years after cars. When that tow truck was built it had a fully open fuel neck.
Lol Shawn with the "I'm guessing that's a yes" with a slight giggle 🤣
OMG...The look on Rory's face..."Did you put diesel in?" PRICELESS! And Sean's laugh...LOL We all make mistakes! Love the channel guys!
“Did you put diesel in it?” LOL
that was great
😳😳😳💀
Diesel just helps lube the valve guides. No big deal. Might need some new plugs, but she's well lubed!
My dad used to say "The man who never made a mistake never made anything". Good work Rory!
Great expression
It's great that you guys can razz eachother so much and have a great time. That's a true friendship.
Proof of how solid Rory is. Admits, owns and shows us his goof ups. Rare theses days. But nice to see he's a meer mortal like the rest of us lol.. much respect guys!! Take care stay safe.
I don't know... even gods mess up sometimes lol
Not God.
@@larrybe2900 Yes, it was written correctly. As a lower-case god instead of an upper-case one.
Don’t feel bad Rory. A friend of mine walked out of the store with 2-1/2 gallons of DEF and proceeded to casually dump it in his truck diesel tank. He didn’t make it out of the parking lot. That was a lot more expensive and time consuming than diesel in the gas tank. Thanks to Shawn for the always amusing commentary and Mike for the rescue. Thanks for sharing, we all make mistakes.
Lol that's funny
I heard a similar story from a Love's truck stop attendant. Love's has DEF pumps on their islands. A trucker filled his entire diesel tank with DEF, stalled his rig and tied up multiple pumps for half a day.
@@carlward I believe that he put DEF in and messed his rig up but Loves wouldnt let it sit there very long, they would have towed it out of the pump island pretty quick. They dont let pumps get blocked for half a day from something so simple to tow out of the way.
@@warrenmichael918 Took that long to get a semi-sized tow truck to come out
@@carlward They pull broke down semi trucks out of the islands all the time with one of their little yellow service trucks. Oh well, who knows what the deal was with it i guess.
It takes a great guy to admit when he is wrong. Awesome job Sir.
We all make mistakes. Just water under the bridge! Keep up the good work Rory!
I've done that before in my 70 SS Chevelle. Thought the whole engine was blown up. I obviously wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing. Live and learn they say.
The look on Rory's face...Did you put Diesel in it? LMAO! I laughed so hard.
Everyone makes mistakes……..and we all learn from them 👍🏻👍🏻
Always smiling and laughing even when you make a mistake . Great attitude! 👍
Like my dad always used to say " but did you die?" You live, learn and move on. Keep up the good fight. Cheers.
not a mistake it was a " guide on what not to do and showing us the effect it has " ;) could be worse could of been other way around petrol in a diesel
That face Rory makes when he realizes he puts diesel in a gas truck, Priceless !! Everybody knows now LOL
TM thx for taking us along on you recoveries. At least it wasn't gas/def in a diesel tank whichmis an expansive mistake. Stay Healthy
Man that was a good chuckle ... the look on your face when Shaun said .... did you put diesel in it. Priceless
At least you owned it.
I have a little diesel jetta and its one of my nightmares that somebody decides to fuel it up and fills it with 87 octane lol. Glad you got things running again and no permanent harm was done.
The look on Rory's face when he realized what he had done was so worth it! But you took it well.
Sean is such a cool dude, just the definition of chilled out and a good friend
True everyone makes mistakes..
So cool that you didn't edited that out... Good morning from AZ
The look of shame when he asked you"Did you put diesel in it?" .. Priceless!
At least you didn't put gasoline in a diesel ...
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
What?!? Rory is human like the rest of us? Who knew?!? You recovered well. Keep up the great work!
At least it was on an older truck and fuel system. If it had been late model, Rory would have had to take it out back and shoot it! The electronic catastrophe would never end. A little humble pie makes us human. I enjoy all of the adventures from Rory, Shawn and Mike with little Lilly joining in occasionally.
Actually you could simply trick the fuel pump to run and pump all of the tainted fuel out. Re-prime the system with fresh gas and you're back in action. The worst that could occur is gumming up of the catalytic converter. Modern stuff is different, but it's still just an internal combustion engine.....
Don't worry Rory your successes WAY out weigh your mistakes!!!!! 😎
As always, the 3 Amigos are killin' it. Thanks for the good shit.
that face though? like "I want to say nope but I just can't!". 10 out of 10 for owning it though, done the same years a go and started a trend it seemed for everyone in the garage. They all done the same within weeks of each other. Watch out Sean and Mike, miss-fueling is very contagious!
Hey Rory you're human we all make mistakes and it's so good that you owned up to it! Between Sean and Rory they found the problem and with Mike's help they corrected it and recovered two vehicle's! Good job Trail Mater team!
The view from your office window is awesome.
Mistakes are not problems - they are opportunities for you to show the true you!
As I have often had to say over my life, “That’s the first time I’ll ever do that again.” I love that my CZcams guys don’t hide…when they’re human.
That's an easy thing to do and not do. Good reminder for everyone! 👍👍
Mistake? What mistake. That was an error. We love you Rory and we are so proud of you. I love the face Rory made when he realized he chose the wrong pump handle. Sean you are truly a special friend. Mike also. The three of you make for a special day for us viewers. Lily is the Princess that makes it extra special. God bless everyone and stay happy. Blessings
❤️🙏🙏👍👍🌟❤️
That look on Rory's face? Yeah... we ALL know what that feels like. It happens.
Some days you are the bug, some days you are the windshield. Good diagnosis and recovery. Thanks for sharing.
New Year greetings from the UK.
Loving Rory's honesty & the great team dynamic. Not sure I'd wanna see 'angry' Rory 😱
Thank you for posting both the good and the bad!! None of us is perfect, and no one is free of mistakes. It's how we handle and recover from our errors (some little, some big) that truly defines the person. You guys seem pretty awesome!
Silent Driver: Oh so very true, and well said. It is also how we build character.
You did not make a fool out of yourself. Mistakes happen , Jeff at Everything Autos channel in TN recently filled his Dodge Diesel tow truck with Gasoline! He was lucky and realized what he had done and was able to tow his tow truck home where he and his family pulled and drained the tank and cleaned it out in the late night to wee hours of the morning , refilled with Diesel and ready to work again.. You're good man , things happen.. I want you to know that I really appreciate you, your crew and your channel! Thanks for taking us along and thumbs UP! 👍
The overwhelming beauty of your "yeah this is just where I live" combined with your humility and skill easily make these the most fun and beautiful videos I've ever seen!
Rory is the real deal and a genuine man, owns his actions!!!
Shawn with the silver lining... "one way to clean your injectors"! 😂 Shawn and those magical slippers (or tender tootsies) he wears to get the truck's drive engaged😂 No problem not seeing the Mad Rory.... the good guy Rory admits to his mistake, fixes it (with help from Mike) and moves on... and silver lining from Rory, you MADE Shawn's day... Team Work 😂🥰😂
It just means Rory has joined a large and distinguished club. Welcome aboard, Mr. Rory! Best photographed and honest channel I know of!
🤣😂🤣 Happens to the best of us, Rory! I did it once while talking on the phone (totally distracted) while putting diesel in my zero turn lawn mower... As previously stated, its refreshing to see someone (especially a "celebrity") taking personal responsibility for a simple mistake. Good on you!!!🤛
Only great men own their mistakes! Little men blame everything but themselves. Proves Lily has a great dad!
Thanks for showing the face of putting diesel into the unleaded tank, haha.
We all make mistakes and I'm happy to see others share theirs.
_FMG_
I'm glad you didn't hurt the engine!! Keep on Trucking!!
Don’t look at it as a mistake, look at it as an experiment to see if Old Blue will run on diesel! Really like your channel. Keep on doing what you do. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
"Messing up bad" is when someone gets hurt. The only thing hurt was your pride. Thanks for sharing. I'm sick of social media and youtube portraying everyone as flawless. If you work in the real world, you know how fake that stuff is.
You are not alone. I too put diesel in our company pickup by mistake. In my defense, this was back in the mid 80s, during a raging blizzard and the local Co-op pumps were old school. I still should have noticed the different hose. It happens...
I've misfueled both ways, petrol in diesel is the worst as it can kill the pump seals, diesel in petrol not so bad.
7:45 - that smile of "found the problem, it was me".
Sean has the best laugh 😂😂
Thanks Rory, that was the best laugh I've had in a while! That look! Priceless!
Love how savage Shawn was with Rory, making sure it got on the video. :D
Oh... Just thought of the cost of that diesel.... 😖
Always a great morning waking up to a upload from yall
I know the feeling. I had an incident a couple years ago when I put DEF fluid in my diesel tank just after I had returned home from filling up for a trip the next day. I realized it when I smelled diesel fuel while I was pouring the def fluid in the tank. The good news I’d the truck wasn’t running at the time so no def made it out of the fuel tank. Fortunately I found a shop close by and had the truck towed in, after unplugging the pump. Bad news is $1200 later after having the work done I’m back on the road again. Nothing damaged.
The only person who never makes a mistake never does anything.
Sean called it 😉Wow Rory is human and makes mistakes 😊 keep em coming, it’s good to show your not perfect, most people aren’t and their pride gets in the way and will show their error in a big way, I think it’s more how you deal with the errors and how fast you can correct them, that Teaches the rest of us how to when we make mistakes ☺️
I'm just glad Shawn caught the diesel deal as quick as he did. Kudos to ya both for keepin' on keepin' on through a rough patch.
Right? He figured that out QUICK!
That sinking feeling when realization sinks in😂 I know it well my friend. At least it wasn’t gas into a diesel.
We all get humbled sometimes. The universe reminding us to stay ready. Great channel guys
Hey Rory your human , we all make mistakes , don't be so hard on yourself! It's all part of the job when your a busy person trying to make great content! Even the mess ups are ok when your doing your best! Wish you and the guys all the best!
Sean your so contagious nice to start a day hearing you laugh
Sean: I guessing that’s a yes... 😂🤣😆. Hilarious!!! I couldn’t stop laughing
Join the club brother!
I went to New Hampshire to pick up a bituminous distributor truck.
I filled it up with 75 gallons of diesel. I had to drain it with a 5 gallon bucket sand dump the diesel in the asphalt tank up the ladder, took me a few hours but I got going again. Lessons learned.
The diesel just lubed the top end! LOL
The 3 of you make such a good team. I watch these videos cuz you guys are always laughing and in a good mood
When Shawn laughs he reminds me of the first scene in men in black when K is talking to the big illegal alien guy. Love it!
Even super heroes are imperfect. 😊👍🏼 Thanks for sharing!
When you start checking everything it could be and then someone else guesses the one thing it shouldn't be.
Then you also realize that out of all the advantages of custom building something yourself so it can do stuff that it wouldn't normally be able to do,there's one disadvantage to custom building some of it to do something that normally couldn't be done.
(Like putting a diesel fuel nozzle into a gasoline tank filler neck is normally not possible as they are designed to deliberately be incompatible.)
Just another one of those things ya get yourself into that isn't funny until you get yourself out of if it!!!😄👍
When you go to a gas station and the pump is Diesel and gas the nozzles are the same size if you go to the pumps that are just for big rigs the nozzle is bigger
The diesel hose that's connected to the gas pump is not for filling pickup trucks and diesel cars so it pumps less the pumps are semis fill up are meant to fill up 100 gallon tanks and pump much faster through a much bigger nozzle
@@masterbates7016
UUUHHHHH.......wut?
@@skeetermcswagger0U812 there are two types of diesel pumps. Ones for big rigs and ones for passenger vehicles. The size of the nozzle is bigger on the pump for big rigs and the pump also pumps a lot more gallons per minute. The big rigs diesel nozzle will not fit in a gas vehicle
@@masterbates7016
Yeah, but the one for regular vehicles that are designed for non-big rigs is bigger than the nozzle for gasoline too.
Great video!! Don't worry Rory, we all make mistakes!! Some of them are a lot worse than putting diesel in a gas vehicle! 😁
You better believe it. Putting gasoline into a diesel is waaaaaay worse.
Funny story along those lines - about 20 years ago I went down to Texas for a BBQ for an Internet Goldwing (motorcycle) group that I was a member of. One of our members from a Northern state went and filled his 1800 up with fuel and made it about 200 yards before the bike started running really poor and lost all power. He had just fueled up, so he knew that it was full - only he didn't know what the green hose was since those were still new and not in his area yet. We gave him a small gas can as a remembrance of the event and teased him for years afterwards.
Not only did you show that you messed up you were honest about say, "Hey, I was in a bad mood and didn't want a camera in my face". It's why we trust Rory, he will tell you just how it is!
The most important thing is keeping it real, thats why I love this channel.
Definitely don't be hard on yourself for messing up, even though you have the power to only show the good stuff it is great that you shared the mistake. It makes you human and gives people a good laugh. Thanks for continuing to share your adventures!
Thanks Rory for being a normal Human. Stuff ups happen.
Bahahaha the look on your face is just priceless.
Thanks again, for letting us ride shotgun with you guys. It’s always great to venture out and see the Moab countryside when I can’t be there. Seems like people are getting into trouble in the front country when they take their street vehicles out in slick, muddy, snowy conditions. Be careful out there, people!
Well that was a good learning experience.. Someone who owns their own mistakes! How refreshing to see personal responsibility. Love this channel.
“Pulling people out because that’s what we kinda do.” Dig it. And, I once filled my Silverado Detroit Allison with gasoline. It happens.
Mistakes where no one gets hurt are the funny stories that life is made of. I had an old friend/mechanic back in the '60s who added a gallon of diesel to each fill up and swore it gave him better performance in his truck, next time stop at a gallon😉
Rory, you never fail to make me laugh. However, this time thank you for showing me what happens when diesel is put in instead of gas. I almost made that mistake a few times and wondered how THAT would turn out. NOW I know. 😂 love watching you…always learn something. Blessed day young man.
🙏❤️🦅
OMG, we love you guys! it's nice to see people fess up...not enough of that these days! I did pretty much the same thing working at a golf course in FL 10 years ago. We had 2 John Deere tri-plex greens mowers that looked identical, except one was diesel and one was gas. Glad I didn't get gas in the diesel...much easier visa versa. And I only did that once! Anyway, love your stuff...hugs to you and the crew.
P.S. we LOVE Shawn's laugh, and the little tidbits at the end!!!
We are definitely laughing with you Rory never at you unless you mention dad shoe's 😆
Now that's what you call a SNAFU. Thanks for yey another great video.
That's not a bad mess up! If it had been a diesel and you put in gas..... that's a bad mess! Glad you went ahead and let us all watch this video, you and the crew are good hearted people doing sometimes unbelievable recoveries and trail fixes and that's why I'm always looking forward to the next video.
Episodes like this are why your channel is one of my favorites! You gents are as real as real can get! Life is better with you gents, MORR, Fabrats, and some Robby Layton on here. Thank you for the great and REAL life content!
Ouch that was expensive in time and diesel! Btw it was awesome meeting the crew last week and the old square body and jeep made it home! Thanks for the laughs.
So that's why U-Haul puts those stickers on the filler!! 🤣
If I had trucks with different fuels I would "me proof" them with stickers
You’re still #1 Rory! Great videos! Keep up the great work!
Rory, you are a human and humans make mistakes. You owned up to it and all was good. I almost put diesel in my 4Runner once. Some gas pumps can be confusing with all the different selections. I was tired and pulled the wrong nozzle and thankfully, it didn't fit. It took a minute to realize that I had pulled the wrong nozzle, but I came to and got the correct one. It happens. We are all humans. The look on your face when you realized what you did was truly priceless.
Everybody makes mistakes! Glad you keep your channel "REAL" - Thanks for sharing!
That kinda stuff happens. Good job on the recoveries!
Ha! We've all been at the bad end of the screw up stick! You've got a great crew, Rory... all the best blessings to you and yours!
This just goes to prove that we are all human! At least you fess up to your screw ups to thousands of us who follow you religiously! I always look forward to all of your videos. Thanks for who you are!!
We watch Matt mess up all the time. Nice to see that your human to. Ya and its fun too. Thanks.
I’m glad he was filming when he asked
