ABOUT PAPADAKIS RACING:
The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2015 title with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as backto back championship titles with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008. The Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla Hatchback is the latest competition build from the Hawthorne, California, based team.
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel drive, tube-chassis drag car in the U.S. The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front-drive drag cars. Papadakis' successes in front-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear-wheel drive when he campaigned a Honda Civic that became just the fifth car to join the NHRA's Sport Compact 200 MPH club - Auta a dopravní prostředky
That was the longest 3 week wait since the last episode.
Seriously! I'm too anxious!
@@Lamonte2219 ..LOL..me too.
Worth it though
I kept checking my notifications over the weeks to see if he posted a new video. Its 4 am and sleep can wait I'm watching this 👍
1000HP 6 cylinder takes time, they're making good progress.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that he cut an engine just to better explain to us what he is doing?
I know right? Awesome!
I paused at that point to make sure that's getting appreciated in the comments :)
It will be in the cost of the kit
Haha half the cylinders the easier it is to explain because there isn’t as many moving parts to move😂
Aaandd he just cut it right away
Imagine being at the level where you can walk into these big aftermarket MFG's with OEM parts and having first of it's kind aftermarket
parts made. That's epic as is showing the modern R&D Process, the ability to 3D scan into CAD and 3D rapid prototype has changed
the word of R&D so much and it's so amazing to see it happen before your eyes.
This was an outstanding video, thank you! :)
Seriously You are one of the most intresting/teaching channel about cars on YT. Keep it up!
Yes just found this channel myself... Now I'm on a binge. It's mostly going over my head but I'll just watch it again and hopefully it will sink in.
if this channel when i was in college. it would been a breeze but still got 3.5 gpa :P
I’m sure that’s the horsepower talking it has ways of making people all too interested 😂
@@kobepower My college actually has a B58 engine in the heat power lab.
It's incredible how well packaged Steph's videos are. 7 and a half minutes of really informative easy to understand content that would take 20 minutes on any other CZcams channel
JDM LIFE you mean 20 videos of 20min each on every other channel
Yeah 20 minutes is a stretch. More like multiple videos for 35 minutes, and they barely know what they're talking about.
This dude is a legend
Team of legends.
1 guy can't make quality like this.
Yeah, though legends also make mistakes. He said, that the the combustion produces power and heat. The heat is actually what produces the power.
The heat expands the gases in the cylinder, therefor creating pressure, wich in turn moves the piston and creates torque over a revolution (power).
@@australianoutback spot on. IMO it's the support companies doing the design and work are the true legends.
Mandernach Luca Combustion is heat numb nuts. It’s exactly what he said in layman’s terms. This guy is a seasoned engineer, I’m pretty sure he knows his shit.
“We’ll save that for stage 2”
As if 1000HP is stage 1😂😂
Why not? 6 cylinder engine. 1,500 hp with better torque would be stage 2 but I don't believe in all this staged stuff. Most of you as stated by one of the better Aussie tuners of VW's said that most of you are interested in driving dynamics, so you prefer manual transmissions and only want a little increase in power. I am more like Papa, I like to be competitive so in my world that means 500+ hp min and only change how I drive the car slightly. Yeah I have more lag but it doesn't matter when the light turns green.
@@dj4monie stfu lol
Shnek IKR I read like 2 sentences of his crap then moved on
Alright, so you could interpret it that way that 1000hp is stage1, or this way: the goal is to make 1000hp, that's just a goal and no guarantee, if he fails and gets stuck at 900hp, then he can swap the crank and still make that 1000.
@@dj4monie Why not? Well, the power that an engine can make depends on a LOT of factors, and cylinder count is at the bottom of that list. Displacement, R/S-ratio, B/S-ratio, shape of combustion chamber and ports, boost pressure, type of fuel etc is what matters, and then you have limiting factors like strength of components, disbalances, boundary layer separation in the intake flow, resonance, cooling capacity. And this BMW engine does have limiting factors, way more than the 2JZ or the old M50 series of engines.
Btw, stage 1, 2, 3 are 100% marketing terms, there is NO universal definition for what these stages mean. For some stage1 is a new downpipe and chiptune, stage2 is a new manifold and turbo and stage 3 means porting the head. It really depends on who you're asking what these stages stand for.
---
One last thing: for drag racing you mostly look at horsepower, but for drifting driving dynamics is actually priority number 1. If you don't have control then you can't make those turns during a slide.
Stage 1 is 1000 up compared to the Toyota built Supras.
Pretty amazing. No one else is doing it like this on youtube!
this = correctly
@@ster9765 Not even that, just literally explaining their reasoning and process. Most Yters are just like BRUH I BOUGHT A STAGE 2 AND HAD IT INSTALLED FOR ME. They built 'built' something, but the viewer doesn't learn anything.
All of your videos are super well shot and straight to the point. I really enjoy the informative style of the content. Keep it up!
Don't you mean. Supra well shot and straight to the point. 😏😏
Yeah dude I thought the same , he talks fast and gets the point across .
I hate the ones spread across multiple videos and they talk about pointless stuff 😂
I could not have said it better myself. Just always awesome content 🤩
I prefer the 45 minute long videos of WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE 100000 HORSEPOWER WITH BMW SUPRA?!?!?!?!?!??!
If this was super informative to you then you didn't know much to start with. All I saw was some guy quickly explain how a 4 stroke engine sort of works. The rest was the same old stuff. Better manifold, bigger turbo, intercooler, injectors, etc. It's like they made this video for children who don't know crap about cars.
Yeah I could watch this stuff all day
Joe Nibler
Who couldn’t this shit is legendary
Clearly, damn my heart skipped a beat when he cut the block just to explain how a 4 strokes work XD
Adam LZ: I have the most powerful 2020 Supra
Papadakis: hold my beer
At one point, the first person to tune the Supra, has the “most powerful Supra” but that doesn’t ever last long lol
Walter Yellow papadakis: hold my custom engine mount
lets not compare apples and oranges... but yes Adam fully disclosed this on his channel. Also this supra engine is being completely rebuit with aftermarket bespoke products so Adam still will have cred for what he has done.
* Hold my torque wrench
Du Vollidiot kannst selbst ab gar nichts
Straight to the point, no bullshit angles, voices or music. Just what needs to be said, shown and explained. Thank you!
When you consider stage 1 up to 1000 hp 😂
And stage 2 includes a stroker crank lol
Im pretty sure he means stage 2. As in stage 2 of the build. Rather than a stage 2 tune.
Stage 2 is gonna be crazy
he just said that we will do that crankshaft for stage 2 !!!!!!!STAGE 2 ?!!hahahahahaha
Stage 2 - 2150 whp???
Stage 3 - ~2900+
Whoa
This is the best 2020 supra build happening at the moment. Keep it coming!
This one and Jackie ding's supra are right now my favourite supra projects
Well, probably not for the street.
Lz is pretty koo to
This is the only Supra build going on right now. Everything else going on is just bolt ons
Daigo Saito lmao
Thx for giving us truly concise relevant information without the BS.
Probably one of the best channels in motorsports right now. I love the technical information without going into too much detail and there is 0 b.s. in these videos that is "questionable". I doubt we'll ever here this channel talk about "how much _horsepower_ a clutch can hold." And for that, I'm thankful.
Casually decides to cut his competition engine to show us how it works inside...fucken legend *applause*
since he has 17 more, i dont think anything about it, plus sponsors bought them all.
Cute avatar dude
That one was already broken probably.
he can 3d print a new one lol
I need to hijack this comment to point out something incorrect that Stephan said: He said that running leaner makes the engine hot but that's false. Running an engine at stoichiometric air fuel ratio makes it hot and running it richer or leaner than stoichiometric
keeps it cool. But for racing purposes, running richer than stoichiometric is necessary for maximum horsepower gains
Love how this guy casually drops knowledge that takes some colleges a good half a year to teach in a 7 minute vid.
Absolutely incredible 🔥🔥🔥
What in this video took half a year to teach?
@@mitchellsteindler I'm guessing he's talking about how they design the connecting rods, but they only gave the idea behind it without going into detail about actually doing it.
I still enjoyed it though. I like seeing this type of stuff way more than the "BIG TURBO BIG POWER PLEASE SUBSCRIBE" bologna.
College is the key word. They teach these sissy boys cad/cam. They have no real world experience.
Said @ϟϟ White Wolf ϟϟ, the beta wimp. The discipline of engineering is completely different than the discipline of building things. Real engineering is based on mathematics, which are imperfect and subject to some black magic second-hand experience. Really building things is based on experience, which is imperfect and subject to some black magic second-hand mathematics.
It is rare for someone, who likes to build things, to be excited by the mathematics, and visa-versa.
@ϟϟ White Wolf ϟϟ says the nazi
I like how they challenge themselves and not just 2jz swap it.
As if you don't need to put at least the same amount of job done to make 2jz match this power level...
The 2JZ is a heavy engine. So heavy actually that I don't understand why more drifters put in a V8. Even toyota's UZ engines weigh less and can make the power just as easily. More than this a the JZ is longer, so you will have less optimal weight distribution. And this BMW engine is lighter than the JZ too, so there is something to say for this. I personally think that making 1000hp on this bmw engine is more of a PR stunt to show people what he's capable of.
@@an0nim11 Nope, you don't. You don't need to cut open, 3d scan and reinvent the wheel, you take a JZ apart and bolt on new parts. The JZ was an engine that was build way to strong for its task, that's why people make power with it, this new BMW engine is build to handle the factory load. Apart from that stroker crankshafts, forged pistons for the JZ are readily available, here you need to custom build them.
@@sasjadevries yeah it's because b58 is new engine... Still i guess you can double the power on stock internals on both engines but to get 1000 hp you have to modify them as much in both cases... That's what i ment.
@@an0nim11 You have to modify the internals of the 2jz to get 1000hp as well lmao
@@MoToKiNg378 and thats what i've said so what is your point?
Love the no bs video. No trying to long it out, just straight up quality non click bait content. Can’t wait to see the rest of the build!
I love this.. everyone fighting over “yeah first to 10’s” “first to 600whp” and he’s all like so yeah we’re just gonna go ahead do 1000hp and get to business.
derek kozelka well to be fair, steph is building an engine. Everyone doing stuff with the new Supra is doing so on stock internals, which is impressive
And post it explaining how 👍
Matt L true true true! It’s just cool how engineering focused he’s being and taking it up to 10 right off the bat.
derek kozelka oh yeah I agree. Steph is a mechanical genius 😂
Real ST hit 10's first. That car is at Hot Rod Drag Week as I post this and did 10.96@128 on Tues. Car has upgraded turbo on it.
Moral of today's presentation, all the awesome manufacturers are close to Papadakis shop. Clearly we all need to relocate to this place.
Orange County CA. It's automotive Disneyland out here. Disneyland is here too. Walking the dogs this AM I saw a running Model A and a few Lambos plus a McClaren. All before 8 AM
@@flyingmerkel6 if i didnt know i would have never guessed California has the strictest law regarding modified cars
ARP is in Ventura, Ca - wonder why he didn't use them for the hardware.
@@MR-zn4rj ventura is not close to orange county. 3+ hr drive during peak hours.
@@MR-zn4rj Carrillo uses ARP hardware, where was the assumption that most rod makers use ARP hardware so they don't have to develop their own?
Geez I learned more from this video alone than when I took automotive class back in high school 😂
This is why modern automotive aftermarket sucks so bad, they are targeting dummies. When I was in high school, I was already making patterns to have cast up at a local foundry, and machining them my self.
Absolutely fantastic video. Clear. Concise. Informative. Love it!
Because of the 2020 supra a lot of bmw builds are gonna be benefited.
What are you talking about? The N54 engine has been notorious. Do your homework...
Other way around...the new Supra owners will benefit from all the high power BMW's
Hahahaha let just say if the block has made of iron it would be awesome but is not, now days car are mix lol
I have N54 stock, I have smoke 5.0 not stock and a new Lexus I could it see which one was it was to far back, idk why it was way newer than my 335i
I am talking about the aftermarket support.B58 was also in Z4 but it did'nt get as much attention as 2020 supra.
Y'all have single-handedly the most interesting CZcams channel on the entire platform.
Thanks for educating all the 15 old kids who have played way to much Forza.👍👍👍👍
Your patient, concise ,efficient explanation of every aspect of the build (as well as basic motor function and mechanism),stands as a testament to your passion for your craft ,and for helping others gain the knowledge and confident understanding of what areas of a build to plan for with your clear, efficient layman narrative. Thank you so very much for taking the time to present us your hard won strategy and your mastered perspective . You are a great man and teacher.
Looks like you spent a lot of time gathering footage for this video, well done sir
“ Maybe we will save that for a stage 2” 😮 is my idea of a stage 10 🤦♂️
Wow! So knowledgeable yet so organized and polite! Thumbs up!
These videos have so much information, you really know your stuff.
“Maybe we’ll save that for a stage two” 😂
Stage 2: 2000hp
For everybody else it’s too hard so they just put a 2jz in a 2020. Not Papadakis!!

Yep actually building something different for once not the same shit
Neil Walton actually it an excuse, real truth is most people hate BMW.

I love how straightforward and how well shot your videos are. but I'm gonna need to rewatch this one to absorb the info better
These videos are very informative! Super interesting to watch
better than the garbage on tv nowadays!

Yes I had been offered valve port air flow machine for less air restriction on my n54 but only now understand and will take them up on their offer.

This video is more education than the whole Discovery channel.
So is Fredric going to be drifting a Supra eventually? That would be sweet!
Him or Castro. Maybe both
He started competing with a supra, and he still has a couple. It would def be cool to see him racing the new one.
It might be for Aasbo in 2020
@@austinpratama5783 Yeah 2020 probably since they need time to build the car
Exxxactly what I was thinking on both these Supra videos so far
There are several observations of this video: interesting, entertaining, educational, straightforward, money is no object, availability of resources, knowledge.
This is the type of quality of videos I seek out on CZcams. Thanks for explaining the fundamentals. Definitely will be hooked on seeing the end result. Subscribed!
Did Papa Papadakis just cut into an ENGINE so he can demonstrate the internals to us?
He was like, "How can I show the Engine cycle???" "Oh I know, let me cut this engine." xD I hope it was an inop one and not a serviceable one.
It was probably at the end of its life.
You can do this. Some engines are plentiful and cheap. But most popular engines have been opened up and the upgrades available reflect this process. All he is showing you is how 3rd party parts are made.
Incredible technology and talent involved, thanks for sharing.
Very cool Stephen! Glad to see an OG still kicking around the import scene!
Your knowledge and patience you’re taking to explain all of this is awesome. Thank you.
really excited to see how this b58 with 1000hp hold his power on MK5 supra , thanks for the update and more power!
The Truth how
@The Truth lol, full block and head is bmw, this is the same shit is 2jz, after forged is no longer a toyota engine. Just shut up and dont talk shit. No sense.
