Ttyd is going to be 60 dollars so that's more of a kick in the nuts than a positive. Also, I wouldn't count prime 4 yet either. The longer they wait the more likely it'll only be for the next console. That's going to be a huge handicap that the metroid series can't afford. None of them are in the game's big music pieces. Fundamentally nothing would be lost if entirely new tracks were written or the offending parts were replaced with sound-alikes.
At any rate, the Magypsies weren't the only thing I was referring to. There's also animal abuse, drug and alcohol use, the "oxygen machines", that questionable scene where Lucas's psychic powers are unlocked, and explicit references to death. Nintendo of America might be okay with releasing a game with all of that in it, but it ain't squeaking by with an E no matter how accepting people are of drag queens these days. Their testing to see if these will all sell well enough, so if you want new games for a franchise or in the case of paper mario a return to traditional rpg mechanics for that series you need to support these remakes to let Nintendo know very clearly this is what we want. Of course sometimes they've just jumped straight into it recently with a brand new game for a series too and have gotten good results that way too.

Pikmin 4 was in development mere months after Pikmin 3 released (judging by the claims Nintendo made), Samus returns was released as the 3DS started its decline, we just had a Paper Mario game with Origami King, and Dread was merely a shelved concept because the creators were waiting for good enough hardware to make it a reality. They are entries into lesser used IPs, but none of them really indicate that we'd get full fledge proper games for Star Fox, Golden Sun, and Kid Icarus. Arlo’s point about Disney and franchise investment is honestly the best I’ve seen online. There’s always more opportunities to tell new stories with preexisting characters, unique opportunities that can only stem from sequels or franchise films to make something surprisingly new. What matters is the passion behind that story, that’s what keeps big studios like Disney from benefiting from them.

I feel the biggest issue is that Disney usually isn't comfortable to take some risks and wants to keep everything in an interconnected universe.
The stories seem so scared to end up bad that they can't ever end up that good either. Similarly being so obsessive about keeping a cohesive universe means these IP's will just end up creating a ton of limitations for the kind of stories you can tell instead of it being a source of inspiration.
There's only so much you can do with a story about a well-established character and cramming it in between two stories already told.
There's only so much you can do with a story when it has to work as a part of a greater whole that needs to lead somewhere specific.
You'll never get to a good story trying to please everyone in a split fanbase and trying to account from the complaints of people who don't know how stories work.

I love Arlo, but I still think his opinions around this topic are completely irrational and unreasonable.
First: Nintendo absolutely is at pretty much their maximum output. After merging their home console and handheld divisions, plus working with more third parties, they are releasing far more games than they ever did.
They can't release more than a game per month, when they do, it only hurts the smaller game, it gets send out to die, like WarioWare or Advanced Wars.
Like Nintendo said, it's unreasonable to expect Nintendo to work on all of their IPs all the time, that doesn't make any sense, even if they did, like I said, half of those games would only be forgotten around all those other big games.
It's wise to wait for the right time to release it, and that smaller series only get new games every 10-20, is completely expected when you look at the amount of IPs Nintendo has, and making new entries just for the sake of doing them is a stupid business decision, that's exactly what hurt many series like Sonic, Crash, Assassins Creed and so many others. Nintendo only works on a title when they have a good idea for it, and that's the right decision, if that means you only get your Starfoxes, F-Zeros, Punch-Outs every ten years, so be it.

      @@lucashen9686 I completely disagree.
20 years ago it didn't take that much to create a masterpiece.
The primary difference is mostly just fidelity.
Making a game for the N64 took far less development time then than a game pushing the hardware does now. Aiming to make a game that's not that high performance will take less development time now because of better tools as well as less need to optimise.
I am completely fine to be playing games that don't have more graphical fidelity than a GameCube game, and I'd much rather see more games that take less time to develop and take more risks.

The Isle Delfino inhabitants have dropped from the face of the Earth after 1000 Year Door. The bosses from 3D World haven't appeared since. I don't think Nintendo wants more characters in their Mario games. It's surprising that Nabbit still appears today.
But Wario and Waluigi are something else. They weren't created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka or one of their teams. Wario came from Mario Land 2, and Waluigi came from Mario Tennis. Nintendo doesn't like them despite their enormous fanbases. Waluigi isn't even a fighter in Smash, and Wario always gets shown with his Wario Ware outfit. I would like to think that, but a lot of the IP are, alas, tech demos. Star Fox and F-zero being the biggest ones. They only EVER make new version of those games if they are showcasing tech or in Adventures case, feeling an IP can't stand witout some backing of a brand name.
F-Zero likely got it the worst. Fro showcase of mode 7 to high speed poly rendering and course creation to some GBA fluff to the pressure triggers on the Gamecube and cross arcade compatibility. If those two IPs can't show off something, they are ignored or we are told, "We already made that game go play that one." When they WON'T release them either.

I approve of Arlo explaining how businesses work because it seems random if you don’t know a few things about business and economics and gamers should arm themselves with this knowledge to influence the companies they buy from. He makes a couple of errors, Nintendo doesn’t refrain from making entries in less popular franchises because the developers don’t get around to it. The suits are what get in the way, they want games with the highest return of investment. Why spend resources on F-Zero when you can have your racing game developers make another ultra profitable Mario Kart and subsequent DLC? When a studio gets too large and rich too often making fat margins takes precedence over the artistic desires of developers.
Passion projects become nonexistent in billion dollar game companies or they are forced to adhere to a mass market template. Nintendo is special because the art of video games still sort of matters to them. A typical megacorp would’ve given up on Pikmin after the first or second game, they had such low sales for a AAA developer.

Nintendo relies HEAVILY on quality control to maintain their brand. That's how they get away with charging 60 bucks for almost decade-old games. If it's an important IP, they make sure the game is polished until it shines before release. We also know from Metroid Prime 4 that they're willing to take an IP away from a studio if they think it's being handled poorly.
The exception to all this is Pokemon. The Pokemon IP is SO lucrative, they'd rather turn a blind eye than risk upsetting Pokemon Company with demands of quality control. Thus rushed Pokemon games continue to drag down Nintendo's image.

Pokemon aren't dragging on what is already flawed, it is part of what is flawed.
Nintendo has this issue of being really good with spinoffs, till they then try to force a mainline series to be that. Regardless of if it goes good or bad it turns the community into a toxic cesspool because one side must lose.
Paper Mario saw the result of this, and Zelda is facing this more and more now.
Regardless of what side you like, you win at the expense of another and lose at your own expense.
Had these been simply spin offs we could have our 2D, 3D, and Mario Karts.
This current way Nintendo is handling it is you get 2D or 3D Mario and the other dies.

The standard practice for major announcements like the pricing of a console is to give journalists a heads up a couple of days prior, embargoed, so they can write their articles to go online the moment the announcement is made. It helps you get your messaging out, it helps them get the news out in a timely manner. Win/win. The Wii followed that for it's price announcement in the UK. With one exception. In the 3 days between getting the info out to journalists and Nintendo upped the price by £10. When this journalist asked the representative he was in official contact with what happened "plans change" was the response.

my biggest concern about your complaints is that NN is not doing bad, and seems to be driving their strategy very well. so, why should they pivot?
why more games, why more? it might only canibalize the sales of other games that have higher priority. I would argue that those decent selling games would keep the same numbers if more of those smaller titles would be released yearly. people want to spend limited amount of money on games. so, part of those already engaged customers would just buy another title, which increases the cost per game unit for multiple games in the end.
OK, yes, new golden sun, but far away in time from mario rpg reissue or some zelda reboot.
or, yes, new punch out, but don't be having mario&sonic olympics in the same year to be released.

You know, I’m not sure I agree too much with the “just make more and more” request.
Sure, it’s effin’ awesome to think of more Nintendo stuff to play (especially Metroid in my case).
But I like to think that scarcity is also part of what makes each entry special. Take Metroid Dread for example: It’s really damn special to just have it. But would it be if it was just the 15th entry in the series?
Now I know you speak more about stuff that could use a bit more attention from Nintendo’s part. But that’s where it starts.
And then in 10 years those might be the new CODs or ACs. Because output frequency becomes the focus rather than whatever else Nintendo prioritizes now.
In short, I feel like the fact that they don’t make THAT many games is part of why most games turn out to be something special, something great.

The long intro was worth waiting through. This is very good news if true and if it produces more IP’s coming to life or more cool new crossovers like Mario + Rabbids.
Your Wario Land example is how I’ve felt about the studio behind Fast RMX for F-Zero for a long time.
With the Switch surpassing the Wii in sales I’m really surprised we didn’t get a new Punchout, Excitebike, or Mario baseball (we got the other 3 big sports ones). All 3 of them had Wii entrees but I have no idea on their sales. Also punchout woulda been cool with the joycon HD motion capabilities. Or even having little Mac’s trainer or WiiFit trainer in the Boxing Rythm games as guest coaches (if this already exists then disregard).
Abrupt ending, but great video overall! Love your content.

The Switch era really has been excellent for bringing back underutilized IPs. Advance Wars, Another Code, Famicom Detective Club...kinda sorta Pikmin and Metroid, though not sure if they really count since those series got games last generation. Its crazy that, even with these comebacks, there's still a good number of great series waiting for their chance to see the light of day again. Personally I'm always hoping they take this golden opportunity with the Switch to make a new Punch-Out, its the Nintendo IP I've been begging to see return the most. I have some hope since they have been referencing it somewhat often in recent stuff (like Luigi's Mansion 3 and the Mario movie) and the 40th anniversary is this year. Hell even just a remaster of the Wii game would be super exciting for me. Was glad to see you use plenty of footage of Punch-Out Wii in this video lol

When there's empty space for Wario Land, Star Fox, and F-Zero (to name a few) I've seen indie games come out that definitely show inspiration from those games to fill those space, almost like a spiritual successor. They should revive those IPs since there's definitely a demand and passion for these games

I think the problem with having Nintendo's Iron Man is that Iron Man is a character with decades of stories. They had Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon (blegh), who created emotionally resonant works with those stories. They have narratives and themes and character arcs.
And Nintendo seems completely allergic to that. I think having an emotional core for the Mario movie, even if it was a very basic one built on nostalgia bait, was important.

One problem I see with this idea of Nintendo just giving old IPs to smaller companies is that I could see Nintendo wanting to keep IPs in "cold storage" for a big blockbuster release later. If they eventually want to do a big blockbuster full game later there won't be as much hype due to audience exhaustion. The new pikmin wouldn't have been as exciting to as many people if there were a bunch of smaller versions along the way.
