  • Telegraph Creek - "Our Life Behind Bars: Father & Son Doing Time in The Northern Frontier"
In the summer of 2013, a unique opportunity for both a father and his 17 year old son to ride BMW GS Adventure motorcycles north to British Columbia, the Yukon Territory and the state of Alaska to the farthest roads on the North American Continent presented itself. Our route was non-linear and we rode some of the most amazing and lonely roads of the north with the furthest point north being Alaska's Prudhoe Bay. Along the way we interacted with indigenous people, met old friends, made new friends and encountered wildlife from a vantage point few get to experience.
We documented the trip extensively with pictures and video footage of that magical trip. In order to tell the story, we have put together a video series titled, "Our Life Behind Bars: Father & Son Doing Time in the Northern Frontier".
Enjoy this Episode of our trip as we ride the awesome Stikine Canyon to telegraph Creek. The place is sometimes referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the North".
Tucked in the northwestern corner of British Columbia, following the Stikine river is BC HWY 57, a 75 mile dirt road with 36 miles of 'steep mountain roads'. To call it a highway is a joke. Trailers and RVs would have a tough time on this road and during times of rain, it can be quite dangerous. This road, also known as the road to Telegraph Creek, is a rough gravel road, steep gradients (up to 20%) with narrow passages along canyon walls, no guardrails, and sharp-angled switchbacks. The road should be ridden with caution and awareness. On a sunny day, one will wonder what all the fuss is about. But ride it in the rain and your disposition will quickly change.
The Telegraph Creek town site and area has a colorful history dating back to the Yukon gold rush era. Gold was discovered in the Stikine River in the late 1860's and was also the route of the failed Collins Overland Telegraph Cable. There is a rumor that the Telegraph Trail has big 265 km stretch that hikers have completed.
Riders travelling the north should not miss this gem. The ride to Telegraph Creek may very well be the highlight of their northern trip. We happened to arrive during a fundraiser event and we were invited by the Tahltan natives to join them for a salmon bake. We met the Chief and he invited us to stay the night on his land next to the Stikine River. It was a memorable experience and a highlight of our motorcycle expedition north.
I hope you enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed making it. Truly, an adventure not to be missed.

We personally invite you to ride along and join us in our adventure.
    As always, "Adventure B4 Dementia"
Thanks for Riding along. ~ GrizzLee & Yukon Johann

Awesome video - my grandfather owned a trucking company during WWII and would truck freight from TC on the wild road!

In 1974, I was 20, and I worked in a construction camp that was building the BCR line to Dease Lake. We fly in a DC-3 to a bush strip and then bounced to the camp. It was totally isolated but I loved it. I have always to myself that I will get back to Conglomerate Creek and check out the area again.

Cool. So you got to see it all when it was much less developed than even today. Sounds like that was an incredible experience. I'm glad you enjoyed a trip down memory lane. I for one, love that country up there. Hope to go back this year. Hope you can return as well. Thanks for riding along ~GrizzLee

Awesome video, brings back memories of 2019. I only took photographs no video. The early part of the road was like Deals Gap in the dirt, then some straight sections, then the good stuff. I would go back in a minute if I could arrange it again.🐻🏍

Hi RA. This is the best vid I have seen that shows how grand the Tahltan territory is. Thank you for sharing. Now I want to move home.. where my roots are. I tell friends about my trips to TC and Dease Lake but your vid will finally show what I have been talking about. The beauty, the crazy canyon roads and the rivers. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure very happy you loved my home and maybe we will see you up there again.

Like the Intro and the exit on the bridge of you and your son, as well. Nicely done.
Thank you , East Coast Ray
P.S My '82 Suzuki 850 GL see's a lot of Dirt roads. Will be needing tires soon and I am waffling on a good compromise of tire selection . What Make/Model could you suggest ? Running Continental /Milestones right now. E. C. Ray

Not yet. The first nations people have done an amazing job in fighting big industry. Awareness and exposure of what is happening up there helps. Unfortunately it brings more attention to a part of the world that would be better being left as is. Remote and unknown. Thanks for riding along. ~ GrizzLee
