Solo Beyond the Northern Hinterlands: The Nahanni Range Road

  • To celebrate a milestone birthday I took a solo motorcycle journey to the north.
    Although I have been to Alaska, the Yukon and the North West Territories before, there remained a few roads that I have not traveled. Among them are some of the most remote in all of North America.
    This is my story as of how I traveled alone without support. Hoping to avoid fires, flood, injury and breakdowns. To keep it safe, I carried extra fuel and a personal locator beacon. My goal was to see and experience the last of the true wilderness left on the planet by motorcycle.
    Enjoy this episode as I travel to north on the very remote Nahanni Range Road. Starting in the Yukon, I end up in the NorthWest Territories. I witness the northern terminus of the Rocky Mountains and experience splendid beauty. I see wolves and have a startling experience in my tent as loneliness and unmitigated fears set in. All ends well, but it is an adventure to remember.
    Thanks for riding along,
    ~GrizzLee

    I've read a dozen or so books on the Nahanni Valley, some date back to the early 1900's. I've also did alot of research on this area during school. There are definitely cases of unexplained deaths, disappearances and many, many cases of bodies being found without heads, after everything I've looked into, I could find cases of 43 individuals being found without heads, some found by friends, family, some found by miners and prospectors, some found by native people, some found by different authorities. How can you say "False Fears"?? I don't understand how someone can "visit" an area and then say "no, there's nothing to be afraid of here or nothing going on"? Obviously, nothing happened to you, but some people met different fates in and around that area.

      Books are well just books. You really cant tell if the stories are 100% true. The published lochness monster photo before the admitted hoax had many articles and witness as well.
      Unless there are NEW bodies without head found in this era the stories you read on books should be taken with a grain of salt.
      Meanwhile, you should appreciate the man who shared his positive experience on the Nahanni area.

    Very well done. Deserves more views. From the comments it seems many do not realize how dangerous, scary what you do is and how brave you are. My hats off to you.
    I recommend to those wanting to adventure to first go weekend camping at a local park before heading out to where the roads end. I have many times thru my wanderings. Sitting at a campfire late at night and get spooked and realize no cell phones, no ones coming, no one can hear my cries for help or when I scream and if I'm ever found it could be just a pile of desert bleached bones picked clean.
    I'm retired now and live up in the hills between the Smokies and the Blue Ridge mountains in Tenn. Just driving up these back mountain roads I could easily find myself in a world of hurt and be lost for good..The wilderness ain't a Bambi Cartoon.
    I would also recommend you search " 411 missing National Parks " on CZcams.

      I just returned this July from solo riding the North Canol Road up there (my 3rd time ... It also goes to the NWT Border and beyond). The mountains at the Yukon/NWT borders are absolutely stunning. I want to go back with a hard shell camper/van and stay several days to explore. My recent trip, up the North Canol rd on my bike was a bit nerve racking. I saw 80 bears in 4 days. I got bothered in camp one night by a young black bear. The curious bear wouldn't leave my tent alone, I believe it had never seen a human or a tent before. It was a persistent little bugger, at 2:30 am in the morning, I had to break camp and leave. Thank goodness for 24 hours of daylight. Thanks for riding. along with me. I hope you can get up there and experience this beautiful wilderness... Stay safe. ~GrizzLee

Many folks are a bit nervous about traveling to some of these remote places. On the other hand. Solo travel gives me more freedom. I stop where and when I want. I am able to travel at my pace. etc... Pros and cons to both, but I mainly travel solo because my friends and even family cannot make that commitment or get coordinated time off. With that state, thanks fo riding along with me. ~GrizzLee

      +Mosko Moto Photos and video just don't do justice. I have yet to see a production that captures the essence of the north. Film doesn't seem to portray the vastness. It is something that must be experienced first hand to appreciate. Thanks, ~Grizz

    Hey Grizz, fantastic video yet again. Do you mind me asking which area you enjoyed exploring the most, here or the Chilcotin? Hard to choose I know. Also, when was this filmed? Thanks for the ride 👍

    • @RubiKonAdventures
      @RubiKonAdventures  Před 4 lety

      I love them both for different reasons. The chilcotin in the fall is a special place. The salmon, bears and fall colors are memorizing. The north Yukon has solitude beyond compare. The north canol and nahanni range roads are some of the most beautiful in all of the yukon. Must come prepared though. 400 miles of fuel range needed. I can't wait to return to either places. If you have to choose, you can't go wrong with either. Stay safe out there. ~Grizz

    Can you confirm if the only Gas Stations are in Ross River and Watson Lake. Love you videos, always one of the first place I look when planning a trip up north. Saw you bike in 2015 in Fairbanks. We stopped for the night, stayed at the university dormitory.

      No gas at tungsten. 400 mile range is what you need.I cared extra... see the rotopax on my bike? Saw me in Fairbanks.?? .. that's awesome. Did we meet? Thanks for watching. ~GrizzLee

      @TheDailyRider Před 6 lety +1

      No we didn't see each other. Pretty sure it was your bike, not a lot of GSA with RubiKon on the tank. I should be good for gas, 2017 F800GSA with 2 gallon rotopax.

      +Jack Walsh You don't need a GSA. Just a good dual sport and the curiosity to explore your world. You can see alot up there on paved roads as well. Most of the Yukon Highways are doable on a road bike. Thanks for riding along. ~Grizz

      +RubiKon Adventures Griz, I'm open to do a road trip with you. I can modify my bike to be able to do a dual sport mode. My concern would be the chassis ground clearance. Cheers, Mate.

      +gimo d. Cool. I have to make it across the pond someday. To answer your question about firearms. The answer is no. It is tough to bring firearms into Canada. I carry bear spray and practice bear camping techniques out on the tundra. Thanks for riding with me. ~Grizz

    I have mixed feelings about videos like this. The scenery is nice, but everything is so hurried. You could pick any spot from anywhere in this video and spend literally years getting to know it. And, obviously, while this area is remote, it is hardly "wilderness" where not only are there roads, but motor vehicles, campgrounds, signs and picnic areas. Of course these are the very things that make videos like this possible. So while I did enjoy this video, and others like it, sometimes I feel like I'm on some sort of Disneyland tour.

    • @RubiKonAdventures
