Golden Retriever and a Sidecar: A Late Winter Adventure
Golden Retriever and a Sidecar: A Late Winter Adventure
Had a warm weather window, so the pooch and I took a 3 day trip to the scablands of eastern Washington at the end of March. This was my first real trip out since my shoulder surgery this winter. Cabin fever and the hack all serviced for the summer. We arrived back home before bad weather came in.
Sakari is such great travel companion. We camped at and hiked Steamboat Rock State Park. We then toured Grand Coulee Dam and Chief Joseph's Gravsite. Along the way we explored many of the curiosity's found on the route.
Thanks for riding along,
~GrizzLee

    • @RubiKonAdventures
      @RubiKonAdventures Před měsícem

      I personally don’t think it matters much. We live a bit north of Seattle and wanted to get on route ASAP. We felt that if we started after a long ride down, that would take some of the pent up energy reserves. It is harder in sections 1-3. So you would get those out of the way first and gradually get into the Forrests… rather than the other way around, like we did. You’ll have fun either way. I’d say, do what works best for you logistically, run with that. Good luck. ~Grizz

A small tree had fallen across the road, but fortunately I still had my chainsaw in the back from clearing out some ice storm-damaged trees on my property, and was able to cut my way through. Those lava rock chunks made for hard going on four wheels. Glad I wasn't on two! And, that "powder" wreaked havoc on my air filter.

    Why do you say you wouldn't be out there on your GS?

    • @RubiKonAdventures
      @RubiKonAdventures Před 3 měsíci

      It was pretty sandy and rocky. I’ve ridden other BDRs on my GS and this one was the roughest so far. The BDR site ranks this as one of the harder BDRs. This particular day we rode a section about 40 miles over ancient lava flows that were then covered by glacial floods. So it has deep silt and large basalt rocks. The smaller the bike the better. I know that I would’ve gone down on my GS as both of us had many pucker moments on our T7s. The lighter T7 with the 21” front and 18” rear wheel is much more suited for this type of riding. Will be riding my GS to the Trans Tiaga this June though. It’s pure bliss for long distance touring. Thanks for riding along .~Grizz

      Riding solo is very rewarding. Make sure you have a spot or inreach device in case you need help. June may be too early for the Magruder Corridor and the Lolo Motorway. With that stated, we seem to be having a low snow pack this year so it may be passable earlier than normal. I went in the fall. If you go early in the season, be prepared for downed trees, ruts and mud in the mountains. Bring a saw. Good luck and be safe out there. Cheers ~GrizzLee

      @@RubiKonAdventures thanks, after some more research, sept seem to be a better timeframe for me, June is way too early like you mentioned.

    Fantastic series Griz...still trying to get used to your beardless face! Not sure a man can be called Griz with no beard! 🙂 I did parts of the route last year myself, then got hurt,🤕 yada yada yada. I'll be back. I think much like the CABDR-South, Sections 1 and 2 are just not my cup of tea, but the boxes have been checked. Moved up my retirement to this June 🤩. I can't take it anymore (same company you were at.) Our paths will cross someday. Love your work. Carry on good sir.

      Congrats on your upcoming retirement. Yes, my fuzzy face comes and goes. One day I wake up and look in the mirror and off it comes. Then 3 weeks later it’s back 😂. At least the missus lines the beard. Send me a msg on Advrider (GrizzLee) . Maybe connect for a ride. Cheers. ~GrizzLee

      I tired this route again last may and ran into snow. I suspect that it can be run anytime from June -November. Hope this helps. ~GrizzLee

    I'm doing the ORBDR south to north this summer and your series was very informative and well done. Thank you!

      Glad to help . Hope you have as much as we did. Do yourself a favor and make sure you stop in for a night at Newberry Volcanic monument. Be safe out there and be careful for riders coming north. Not everyone follows the ride right rule. Good Luck ~GrizzLee
