  • Episode 3: Salmon Glacier and Beyond
    I finally made it out of Smithers after a day layover to re-tool and clean up. I manage to encounter a huge amount of construction on this day and it was taking me forever to make my way to the Cassiar Highway. And even once I got on the Cassiar, the construction seemed to be every few miles all the way up to the Nass River. It seems that development of this part of the word is finally catching up.
    At the Meziadin jct I take a 40 mile spur road out to Stewart, BC and then on into Alaska, going through Hyder and up to some spectacular glaciers. I meet Chip Nelson, a fellow adventure rider, along the way.
    What experienced next is spectacular to say the least. We rode through the small towns of Stewart and Hyder and then up to the Salmon Glacier and beyond. It is a remarkable ride and experience. The video doesn’t do it justice.
    The next day Chip and I parted ways. Me, I had other plans. I wanted to tackle the North Canol Road (see the next episode).
    I hope you enjoy the ride,
    ~GrizzLee

    So I'm watching this, stopping (apparently too many times) to take notes on the route. Then the end and I was crushed - what!?. Going back now to watch it again without the distraction of taking notes.
    Cheers, Grizz1

    It's such a small world. I was watching this and also met a guy named Chip from Colorado, though in 2019, on my trip to Tuk. Turns out same Chip! Though in 2019 he was on his GS :)

      @@RubiKonAdventures You're correct, he's got an 1150. With some of the most impressive collection of stickers from around the world from when he circled the globe on it :)

    Have you ever ridden along the old British Columbia Railway bed that was to have reached Dease Lake? I worked on the line in 1974. Our camp was on the Little Klappan River at Conglomerate Creek. I have always wanted to go back.

    • @RubiKonAdventures
      @RubiKonAdventures  Před 5 lety

      No, but, I know exactly what you are talking about. Gnat lake is a pass is where the the old railroad goes by. I have looked at maps and thought about taking a small bike that way. Not sure if it is all rideable. Too much good stuff up there. Less work and more exploring.. to work there must have been cool back then. I'm envious of what you must have experienced back then. ~ Grizz

      @@RubiKonAdventures I was 20 at the time. We flew out of Fort Nelson on a DC-3 with web slinging for seats, I was a little worried about the plane since it was WW2 vintage and landed at a bush strip about one hour from the camp. The camp was small, about 70 men, we worked 7 days at week in 12 hour shifts. I flew out of another bush strip that was created on muskeg, you could see waves moving through it as the cats prepared it for service. The weather was never great. Some of the men fed the wolves by leaning out of their trucks and the wolves ate from their hands. I wanted to come back but the government shut the project down.

      Wow... sounded like hard, but rewarding work. Now you've whetted my apetite to explore more of the railway corridor. Thanks.
